Design № 782
Super 12
In mid-2015, we began initial discussions with Tom Ehman, who has been rallying support for a new event: The
San Francisco Yacht Racing Challenge.
The event will be held annually, starting in July 2017. It promises a return to friendly competition between nations
in one of the most iconic and reliably windy venues anywhere in the world. To limit costs and provide equal
competition, the racing will occur in one designs. Crews will have to meet strict nationality rules and each boat
will be crewed by 12 with a minimum of two women, two men, two aged 22 and under and one aged 62 or over.
Realization of these objectives requires the design and construction of a new class of boat – the Super 12.
We are thrilled to have been selected to develop this new design. This project will require all of our experience
from grand-prix designs, our understanding of modern production techniques and our history with developing
the most competitive one design fleets in the world. The design of the Super 12 is moving into high gear as we go
to press and the work of finding the right blend of tradition, modern construction and sail handling capabilities
has the entire team energized to produce something very special.
Above the waterline the boats are inspired by the meter boat look – long bow and stern overhangs, low freeboard,
sheer spring, and narrow beam. Below the waterline, a modern appendage package with a deep lead bulb with
wings and a trim tab provide power and exceptional upwind performance. The boats will sail upwind into the
San Francisco tide at relatively high angles of heel and run deep downwind with fractional symmetric spinnakers
providing spectators and television audiences’ incredible visuals in fleet and match racing settings.
The boats will be built by Westerly Marine in Santa Ana, Calif., to the strictest one design controls. They will be
built from a combination of E-glass and carbon pre-preg with foam cores. We have worked closely with Westerly
to develop a robust, cost effective laminate and construction scheme that will allow us to produce a boat a
month at full production pace, within very strict one design tolerances. By virtue of the modern materials and
manufacturing combined with the carbon rig and rigging we can achieve a similar stability level to the 1980’s
vintage twelve meters but at a displacement some 6 plus tons lighter. Unrestricted by the vagaries of the twelve
meter rule we are able to stretch the waterline and develop a significantly less distorted hull form, reducing drag
and further improving performance. Under the water we are maintaining a modest draft of 10’5” to maximize the
range of venues suitable for Super 12 racing. The rig incorporates a 20% topmast and 140% overlapping genoas to
provide a silhouette that has a clear historical lineage.
Stand by for more updates on this exciting project.
Design Update
Farr Magazine — Winter 2016 10

Design № 786
41m Prodigy Ketch Concept
The 41m Prodigy Ketch Concept is Farr Yacht Design’s latest conceptual development work for a 41m, high performance ketch containing traditional styling elements combined with
contemporary underbody and appendage design, capable of extended worldwide cruising.
The styling of the deck evolves traditional and classic styling elements into a fresh and modern solution; from the relatively boxy main cabin with an artful balance of surface
curvature, to the foredeck butterfly skylight that doubles as a tender cradle. The hull is a balance of traditional elements with modern features that promote performance, comfort
and safety. The long, graceful aft overhang is sized to be wide enough at the transom to house an opening platform that creates a large beach with a sunbed area and uninterrupted
access from the owner’s cabin to the sea and access to an enormous toy storage area.
The performance level of this ketch is targeted at the upper end of the typical Elegantes class of a Bucket Regatta. With boat speed comfortably faster than the wind speed in light
winds, and a stability level high enough to easily carry full sail upwind into the lower twenties, this yacht will be very enjoyable to helm. The flexibility and positioning of the ketch
rig promotes a number of potential sail combinations for comfortable, manageable cruising at high overall speed without the requirement to fly sails from a bowsprit. With working
sail area of 745 square meters and a loaded displacement of 150 tons, this ketch will fly across oceans, and especially when 1300 square meters of gennakers are flown.
The conceptual design stage for this project is complete. It can be rapidly advanced into the preliminary design stage and adapted to the requirements of an owner ready to
efficiently cruise the world.
Farr Magazine — Winter 2016 12

Design № 779
Infiniti 53
Since Farr Yacht Design introduced the Cookson 50 in 2003, it has proven to be an
incredible combination of value and performance. The Infiniti 53 builds upon the
Cookson 50’s winning ways, taking advantage of 12 years of research, performance
improvements, and advances in structural engineering and composite construction
techniques. Unique among designs of this size, this yacht incorporates a transverse,
retracting DSS foil that provides significant stability at speed and lifts the yacht,
reducing effective displacement.
Farr Yacht Design has entered into a technical and development partnership
agreement with Dynamic Stability Systems and is in a unique position to provide
fully developed DSS-based solutions to its clients. The design has been developed to
maximize the benefits of the canting keel and DSS packages and promises to provide
unrivalled performance across a broad range of conditions. With detailed IRC and
ORCi rating optimization completed as part of the design we believe that the Infiniti
53 will be the weapon of choice for premier offshore racing in 2016 and beyond.
The last few months have seen a flurry of activity as we look to bring the Infiniti
53 from the drawing board to reality. We have worked closely with Infiniti Yacht’s
in exploring a number of build options to be able to offer our clients a turnkey
experience – state-of-the-art DSS technology, canting keel, fully optimized hull,
appendage and structures designed for offshore sailing – all at a similar price to a
TP52.
The design has already been nominated in the Performance Keelboat Category by
Yachts and Yachting magazine and the worldwide interest has been significant. We
anticipate initial orders being signed imminently and expect the first boat to hit the
water in the third quarter of 2016.
Farr Yacht Sales
Announcing FYS Europe & FYS Americas
Farr Yacht Sales has re-organized into a territorial business model and
added two offices – one in Newport, R.I. and another in Cowes, U.K.
The additions increase the company’s presence throughout the world.
The new territorial divisions serve as an outlet for Farr Yacht Design’s
new production yachts and for Farr Yacht Sale’s brokerage listings.
Jesse credits the Morning Light Project, which featured a Farrdesigned
TP52, with launching his sailing career.
“I’m excited to partner with the team at Farr and work with clients on
an individual basis to achieve their goals,” said Fielding.
FYS Europe is headed by Joe Hall. Hall has acted as an exclusive dealer
for the Farr 280 One Design in the U.K. prior to joining FYS. He remains
the exclusive dealer in the area and has had success developing the
class in Europe. The Farr 280 class has achieved a stronghold in the
Solent and is poised for further growth with individual owners spread
across Europe. Hall also owns Activate Switch Limited, a sales and
marketing agency, specializing in the marine sector.
“Primarily, it is the opportunity that the Farr brand brings to the table;
with a phenomenal pedigree and background in both racing and
cruising yachts,” said Hall. “There are few household names in sailing,
and Farr is one of them and I am looking forward to helping Farr Yacht
Sales take advantage of that and develop their European business in
the coming years.”
Joe and his team also bring relevant racing and events experience. He
is currently working for the ACWS Portsmouth, the RORC Rolex Fastnet
Race and prestigious boat yard, Premier Composite Technologies.
With a comprehensive range of support services including marketing,
graphic design and PR, Activate is ideally positioned to help drive Farr
Yacht Sales as well as the Farr 280 program in Europe.
Jesse Fielding will head the FYS Americas office in Newport. He is
actively involved in the sailing community. He brings ten years of grand
prix campaign experience to FYS. He has achieved success in one design
classes and offshore platforms around the world.
Patrick Shaughnessy, president of Farr Yacht Design, said, “We look
forward to having Jesse’s fresh perspective on our team and to launch
FYS Americas with a renewed enthusiasm.”
The addition of FYS Europe and FYS Americas allows for significantly
more product exposure and services. Owners and prospective
owners of Farr-designed sailboats can benefit from a close working
relationship with Farr Yacht Design, the largest racing sailboat design
office in the world. Optimization services, boat histories, sailing
performance data, construction methods and racing prospects can
be made available to assist owners to make informed choices.
“There are few household names in sailing,
and Farr is one of them and I am looking
forward to helping Farr Yacht Sales take
advantage of that and develop their
European business in the coming years.
— Joe Hall, FYS Europe
“
FYS Europe and Americas are actively seeking brokers and agents
within their respective territories to represent specific products. FYS
is continuing to develop its territorial business model and anticipates
the announcement of further added territories in the near future.
