many popular offerings have returned; and you will 

also see that we have added many new camps we 

hope your child will enjoy. The members of our 

exceptional teaching staff look forward to providing 

your child with a safe and exhilarating experience. 

Our goal at SummerPrep is to offer a stimulating 

environment for students entering grades K-12 

where children can explore new interests and 

expand their horizons.

2016 Schedule 

SummerPrep 2016 takes place June 6 - July 15. 

Classes are available during both three-week sessions, unless otherwise noted in 

course description. Classes are not sequential. 

SummerPrep offers students enriching and 

challenging classes – and an opportunity to 

learn new skills or build on existing talents. 

We foster discovery and exploration, and 

encourage students to enjoy themselves in a 

safe, supportive environment. 

Our classes are small, so each child receives 

one-on-one instruction and personalized 

assistance. There are many classes from 

which to choose, so your child can look 

forward to fun and exciting experiences at 

SummerPrep. Make it a summer your child 

will remember for a lifetime!

Students may not have a gap in their schedule – there are no “free” periods allowed 

during the day. SummerPrep students arriving before 1st period may join Before 

Care. Once afternoon camps have ended, youngsters may come to After Care 

where they can enjoy arts and crafts, playing games or just relaxing after an eventful 

day. A daily snack will be served in the late afternoon. 

Please sign up in advance for Extended Care (i.e. Before Care and/or After Care) 

for one or more weeks at a time. Payment is due at the start of the week: $10 per 

week for Before Care and $20 per week for After Care. After Care ends promptly at 

5:45 p.m. and there will be a late pickup fee ($1 per minute).

• Enter payment information. A 50% deposit is 

required to register. If you elect to pay later, we

Payments and Cancellations 

We accept most forms of payment. Should a child not 

be able to attend SummerPrep, full refunds will be 

granted until May 13, 2016, less a $25 cancellation 

fee. After May 13, no refunds will be issued for Session 

One; after June 10, 2016 no refunds will be issued for 

Session Two. 

Lunch 

Lunch through Sandia Prep will be available for 

purchase during SummerPrep. You can open a lunch 

account through Sandia Prep’s business office by 

contacting Maria Fidalgo at mfidalgo@sandiaprep.org 

or (505) 338-3003. Additional snacks will be made 

available for sale during lunch and morning break. 

Withdrawal from SummerPrep 

Students are expected to behave according to 

well-accepted principles of behavior. SummerPrep has 

a zero tolerance policy when it comes to bullying. The 

SummerPrep Director reserves the right to dismiss any 

student at any time. Partial refunds will not be granted 

should a child be dismissed from SummerPrep. 

Special Hours 

The SummerPrep office will be closed from 

March 21 - April 1 for Sandia Prep’s Spring Break. You 

may still register online at this time. 

There will be no SummerPrep classes/camps on July 4. 

Parents are invited to view students’ accomplishments 

on June 24 and July 15.

Extended Care 

The regular day at SummerPrep begins at 8:10 a.m. 

and ends at 3:45 p.m. Before Care and After Care, 

which are available for an additional cost, will extend 

the student’s day from as early as 7:30 a.m. until 

as late as 5:45 p.m. Before Care helps students get 

settled in the morning and ready for their classes, 

which start at 8:10 a.m. If your student needs to 

extend the day after the Afternoon Camp concludes 

at 3:45 p.m., you may sign up for After Care, which 

includes an afternoon snack. The After Care program 

will have separate areas for students according to age 

groups so your child can participate in games and 

activities with others of a similar age. All students 

must be picked up by 5:45 p.m. If parents are late to 

pick up students, an additional late pickup fee will 

apply ($1 per minute after 5:45 p.m.). Prices are for 1 

full week; pro-rating is not available.

Come Play & Learn! 

Tiny Tots (4-5 Years Old) 

Give your child an early start to preschool and 

kindergarten! Students will enhance their math and 

literacy skills as well as participate in fun music, 

dance, and art activities. Students will be able to 

express themselves in an environment geared toward 

growth through hands-on learning.

Reading Adventures 

Travel beyond the book and go on a reading adventure! 

Create paintings, puppets, crafts, characters, masks and 

more based on favorite books from authors such as Eric 

Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), Dr. Suess (Cat in the 

Hat) and Laura Numeroff (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie).

Dino World 

Ever wonder why a Triceratops had horns, or why a 

T-Rex had such tiny arms? Then enter the world of the 

prehistoric, learn about the beasts of the past, and become a 

paleontologist-in-training.

Come Play & Learn! 

For a safe and fun summer experience, enroll your child 

in Come Play & Learn! Research has shown that young 

children learn most effectively about themselves and each 

other through play. Children will become builders and 

architects with blocks and LEGO®. They will discover the 

world through their senses with water and sand tables; they 

will become authors and illustrators while creating books 

of their own design, and they will develop as artists with 

watercolors, easel paints, and clay. All this plus making 

new friends, reading stories, spending time outside – an 

exciting day of exploration and fun doing what kids do 

best – PLAY! Age-appropriate groupings will help ensure an 

engaging experience. Kids will rotate activities every period. 

Additionally, children enrolled in Come Play and Learn! can 

take advantage of SummerPrep’s classes offered throughout 

the day, such as Clay, Art, and Guitar. Counselors will escort 

children from Come Play & Learn! to and from other classes. 

Come Play & Learn! will be the younger children’s “home 

base” and will provide our youngest campers with a sense of 

community, fun, and friendship. Children must be age 5 as 

of June 6.

Open Studio Art Class 

This class is designed for the passionate young artist. 

In the open studio art setting, participants chart 

their own path as they experiment with and explore 

various painting, drawing, mixed-media, sculpture, 

and printmaking techniques. Students will develop 

art skills, play surrealist-inspired art-games, and leave 

with a portfolio of exciting new images. Join us and 

travel on your own art-making journey.

Drawing 

Learn drawing techniques and tricks. Explore point 

perspective, value, texture, and proportion and apply 

these elements in still life, landscape, figure and 

portrait drawing.

Batik for Beginners 

Batik uses hot wax and colored dyes to create 

beautiful patterns and images on cloth. T- shirts, wall 

hangings, and other wearable art will all be options 

for this class. Learn the intricate art of batik, which 

uses light resists and layered color, to create your 

own clothing or wall- hanging.

Portrait Art 

This class will explore the long tradition of drawing 

and painting the human face. Students will have the 

opportunity to make art about someone important to 

them, someone they know or someone they admire, 

and to make a self- portrait, which explores the face 

we know best - our own!

Collage 

Start with drawings and then add layers of color and 

texture to your ideas to create mosaic- like images. 

Magazines, pieces of fabric, found objects, and 

prepared papers will be available to cut, tear, and 

glue. Have fun watching your drawings come to life!

Jewelry Design and Wearable Art 

Design your own jewelry and wearable art in this 

fascinating class. Students will design and create 

bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and wearable art 

such as shirts and other clothing. Students will 

learn the process of designing and creating jewelry 

and clothing and will be involved in all aspects of 

wearable art.

Comic Relief: Cartooning 

Ready for some comic relief? Draw your way into 

the wonderful, whimsical world of cartooning! We’ll 

learn some cartoon history, check out some famous 

cartoonists, and explore the basics of creating a 

character - from head to toe! We’ll draw heads, 

bodies, animals, props, backgrounds... everything 

you’ll need to make your very own original cartoon 

creations. Finally, we will sculpt our characters out of 

clay and bring them to life in 3-D.

Fun With Numbers 

Learn basic number concepts and have fun at the same 

time. Using manipulatives and games in a structured 

learning environment, your child will feel more 

confident and become a whiz at number facts.

Building Mathematical Minds 

It’s important to be challenged, have fun and feel 

successful in mathematics, especially during the early 

years of developing the mathematical mind. Come and 

explore patterns, geometry, statistics, measurement, 

data and many types of numbers. Your student will 

learn problem-solving strategies and to recognize any 

misconceptions, while having a great time.

Geometry for Credit (Prerequisite: Algebra II) 

This class, which will use textbooks as well as 

online content, has been approved by Sandia Prep’s 

Mathematics Chair and can be taken for credit by Sandia 

Prep students. (To earn credit a student may not miss 

more than one class and must take final exam.) Upon 

successful completion a student will be placed into Precal 

the following school year. 

This is a 6-week class for Sandia Prep students only.

Launch your very own model rocket -- in this introduction 

to the exciting world of rocketry! Discover the world 

of rocketry and aeroscience through simple lessons in 

physics and flight. Learn about fluid dynamics, stability

own flight vehicle. Join us as we reach for the stars!

Robotics 

Experience the world of robotics! While the younger 

students will do more building of robots, older students 

will learn to program and build robots from LEGO®, 

Mindstorms® and K’Nex®. In addition, students will learn 

a bit of the history of robots and see how they are being

Webpage Design and Creation 

Create your own webpage using graphics and 

photos. Learn how to use the basics of Dreamweaver, 

an advanced website creation program. Limit 15

Create some amazing graphics for use in print or on 

the web. This class will show you some of the basics 

of creating graphics used in different kinds of media. 

Students will use Photoshop and Illustrator as their 

primary tools to create remarkable graphics and

Digital Photography 1 

Now that you have a digital camera, would you 

like to learn how to use it? Become the great 

photographer you always knew you were by 

photographing subjects and producing some 

remarkable images in class. Come ready with camera

Digital Photography 2 

Ready for the next level of digital photography? 

Learn how to manipulate your images in Photoshop 

and produce high quality images on a variety of 

media. Create a stunning set of images for our art

Digital Filmmaking 

This course requires a person interested in all aspects 

of filmmaking from screenwriting to using a digital 

film camera. Students will develop their own short 

projects and use state-of-the-art equipment available 

only to SummerPrep students!

Study Skills 

Creative Writers: Fun with Words 

Improve reading skills while writing, as you create an 

illustrated journal or alphabet book, or write a play, 

poem or song in this project-based class. Singing, 

movement, and theater games inspire and motivate 

reading and writing.

Prep for Middle School 

This three-week course will focus on improving a 

student’s reading and writing skills. Students will 

grow as writers and be challenged to analyze 

different writings. Students will also strengthen and 

harness their essential math skills, providing them 

with abilities and confidence for the upcoming year.

Exploring the World of Gods, Myths, 

and Monsters 

Experience a multimedia overview of creatures found 

in centuries of literature, art, and film. Students will 

be introduced to ancient world myths, legends, and 

fantastic creatures representing diverse cultures and 

belief systems. (Resource materials will contain some 

scary elements.)

Hogwarts School of 

Witchcraft and Wizardry 

Students will “apparate” into the world of Harry 

Potter. Classes will consist of games resembling Harry 

Potter references, as well as actual Hogwarts classes. 

Students will be “sorted” into the four houses, make 

wands and potions, study Herbology, go on treasure 

and scavenger hunts, tell fortunes by reading tea 

leaves and more!

GPA+ Solutions with Dr. Gerry Lozeau Ph.D. 

This academic workshop for middle and high school 

students will be offered daily for two hours during 

the week of June 13 – 17. Dr. Lozeau has consulted 

with Sandia Prep since 1989; and this will be the 

sixth year SummerPrep has hosted his workshop 

(gpaplussolutions.com). A primary focus will be 

study-reading, moving students from merely reading 

print to reading to find answers to questions. 

Students will learn to make notes versus taking 

notes, the value of pre-reading as a habit, and how 

to create a study system to better handle challenging 

material. In addition, students will learn the value 

of self-testing (which has been presented in recent 

studies as the most effective learning strategy), 

while considering why other often-used and timeconsuming 

strategies provide limited positive results. 

Best practices for students at all levels will be 

clearly outlined. Students will discover why efficient 

daily study strategies and habits are excellent test 

preparation techniques, which eliminate the need 

to cram for exams. Enhanced learning opportunities 

and performance for all students will be discussed. 

The specific topics covered in this workshop, 

coupled with the materials that will be provided, 

will hold students in good stead now and through 

their college years. The skills taught and information 

shared will also be of immediate value to students 

and parents, as classes begin this fall. We are able 

to recommend this as a valuable academic resource 

based on the comments of students and parents over 

the past five years.

Medieval Life 

Learn all about this famous king, his wizard, and his 

knights. Through classic stories, art, crafts, and film, 

explore the long-ago world of medieval castles, chivalry, 

heraldry, warfare, and wizardry. (Some films are rated 

PG-13 due to scary elements and depictions of magic.)

Newspaper and Journalism 

Produce a newspaper for each session of SummerPrep. 

Learn the basics of newspaper production, how to 

conduct interviews, write stories and become an official 

news hound.

Digital Journalism 

Learn the basics of producing news stories online, 

including how to find story ideas, conduct interviews, 

take photos, and write stories. Students also will learn 

the basics of publishing their stories using basic web 

technologies and social media.

Blogging Bonanza 

Have a great photo collection you’d like to share? What 

about a group of drawings or writing you want to show 

off? Learn how to set up your own blog on any topic. 

Class includes tips for writing for the web and taking 

awesome photos. By the end of the class, students will 

have a digital space that is all their own and can be used 

to present class projects, personal portfolios and more.

China Tour 

How long is the Great Wall? How do you hold 

chopsticks? What does a baby panda look like? With 

a native speaker as your tour guide, learn Chinese 

Mandarin “Ni Hao” and embark on this three-week 

adventure into amazing Chinese cultural experiences.

Chinese Brush Painting 

Experience the joy of artistic expression through 

Chinese brush painting. Learn to use the Chinese 

bamboo brush, black ink and Chinese watercolor 

pigment. Use your confidence and skill to create your 

own portfolio, painting a variety of subjects from 

mythical dragons and tigers to exotic flowers and 

pandas.

Learn To Speak Mandarin 

Have fun and sharpen your brain skills as you learn 

Mandarin and discover one of the world’s oldest and 

richest continuous civilizations, with its 5,000-yearold 

history. Did you know that Mandarin grammar is 

relatively simple – and that words are artistically 

formed by a combination of meanings? With a 

native speaker and experienced Mandarin teacher as 

your guide, embark on a three-week adventure into 

conversational Mandarin and Chinese culture!

Elementary Spanish 

Habla Español? Enjoy an introduction to the Spanish 

language using chanting and ‌singing, storytelling, 

theater games, and instrumental music.

Piano Class 1 and 2 

Beginners and intermediate students: learn the basics 

of music theory, how to read music, and, of course, 

play the piano. More advanced students: improve 

skills and learn new techniques!

Guitar Class 1 and 2 

Discover the basics of guitar and move onto the next 

level. Students will learn at least five songs and 

perform final songs in a concert on the last day of

additional three songs and more advanced guitar

chord changes.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. 

Based on the original Broadway production that ran 

for over 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony 

Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion 

picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a 

fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and 

tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features 

some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan 

Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with 

new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. 

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a 

provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young 

prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If 

the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse 

will end and he will be transformed to his former self. 

But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his 

lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed 

for all eternity. 

This high energy musical is directed and 

choreographed by professional dancer Louis Giannini 

and is under the musical direction of Kent Wall. 

Giannini and Wall are dedicated to helping children 

build strong character, self esteem, confidence, and 

discipline through learning new skills and through 

the spirit of cooperation. SummerPrep is excited 

to also have two-time Emmy Award winning set 

designer, Dahl Delu, work with the Theater Program 

on this production. Be a part of this fabulous 

production and help bring to life colorful characters 

and that toe-tapping rhythm.

Shrek the Musical JR. 

Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical 

JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks 

Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. 

It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s 

favorite ogre Shrek leads a cast of fairy tale misfits 

on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true 

acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, 

Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful 

message for the whole family. 

Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there 

lived an ogre named Shrek. One day Shrek finds 

his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits 

who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny 

terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with 

a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s 

handed a task - if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his 

swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love 

and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t 

be complete without a few twists and turns along the 

way. 

Louis Giannini directs and choreographs this fairy 

tale adventure. SummerPrep is excited to also 

have two-time Emmy Award winning set designer, 

Dahl Delu, work with the Theater Program on 

this production. With abundant opportunities for 

imaginative sets and costumes, and a host of overthe-top 

roles for an expandable cast, there’s a part for 

everyone in this dazzling production. His cast will 

learn to develop their talents to their full potential. 

Join us in bringing Shrek’s story to life.

immerse the student in the life of a detective and

Comparative Anatomy: Get the 

Inside Scoop on the Animal Kingdom! 

What do you have in common with an earthworm 

or a crayfish? How do squid reproduce? How do 

starfish eat? What’s inside a shark’s stomach? Dissect 

and learn about internal and external anatomy and 

adaptations of representatives of the animal kingdom. 

We will study earthworms, grasshoppers, crayfish, 

and clams (week 1); squid, starfish, and sharks (week 

2); frogs and fetal pigs (week 3). Learning, exploration 

and fun go hand-in-hand with funny-but-not-quite-asfunny-as-Bill-Nye 

biologist, Chuck Buxbaum, PhD.

Space Exploration 

Explore elements of space through art, educational 

videos, songs, worksheets, and experiments. A trip to 

the moon will be the first stop in our travels, and then 

we’ll move on to visit the stars and constellations. 

Comets, craters, and asteroids (oh my!) are on the 

horizon along with the galaxies, including our very 

own Milky Way Galaxy. We may even discover a 

new planet inhabited by alien beings (hope they’re 

friendly)! Are you ready to scratch the surface of

Kids Cook 

A multicultural student nutrition, exercise and food 

education program that includes hands-on learning 

about nutrition and preparing culturally diverse 

foods. Students in this class will learn how to cook 

from scratch and have fun while learning detailed 

information about making good food choices.

Star Wars: Jedi Training 

Embark on an epic adventure and learn about Star 

Wars! We will focus on the history of Star Wars 

while learning about the rise of the Empire, the 

Clone Wars and the start of the Jedi Counsel. To be a 

strong Jedi, we must cover the basics of engineering 

behind ships, droids and light sabers. We must also 

understand the different species of aliens throughout 

the series. By the end of the three weeks we will be 

well on our way to being Jedi. May the Force be with 

you.

Ever wish you could master the bow and arrow 

like Katniss or Hawkeye? Now’s your chance! 

This class will teach shooting techniques for target 

archery. While learning about the equipment, also 

learn essential safety precautions to be taken while 

practicing archery. There is no experience necessary 

and, after this class, you too will be able to hit right 

on target.

Tennis 

Give your child the edge in this great lifelong sport. 

In this class, kids are paired according to knowledge 

and ability level. Beginners learn the fundamentals of 

stroke, scorekeeping, rules, and other ways to make 

their tennis game fun. Intermediate players perfect 

strokes, develop skills and use strategy to make their 

game even more satisfying. Watch your child grow 

in this useful and active workshop. Loaner rackets 

available; balls are provided. Class size limited to 16.

What better time than summer to learn to play 

soccer or practice your skills! In this class we will 

do drills and learn and practice the fundamentals of 

the game. We’ll work on strategies for penalty kicks, 

direct kicks, corner kicks, and many more. We will

Flag football is a great game for first time players 

as well as returning players. Our camp will 

provide a safe and exciting atmosphere through

This yoga class is artfully designed to engage children 

of all ages. It is an amazing way to involve young

hooping; creative movement and dance; and more.

Afternoon Sports Camp 

For older students interested in sports and fitness, this camp 

will help improve athletic skills, overall physical 

fitness and endurance – all in a fun and exciting 

atmosphere. This program will incorporate aerobics, 

plyometrics and appropriate strength training for the 

participant. Age-appropriate groupings will help ensure a 

strong, engaging experience. 

In addition to skills training, students will work together in 

a team setting, playing a game utilizing consistent skills and 

good-natured competition. Students are welcome to attend 

weekly or throughout the entire SummerPrep program.
