van Lennep 

After some rest during summer break it was 

time for my second internship at a graphic design 

studio. I wanted to broaden my experience so 

I chose a different studio and a different city. 

Beginning February 2015 until June that year I 

undertook my first internship at DOKS, in Arnhem. 

This was not only a huge learning experience but 

also a fun time. The thing was, I really wanted to 

leave my hometown Veenendaal. Given Arnhem 

is so close to Veenendaal I was motivated to 

pursue my second internship somewheres further 

afield. Amsterdam was an obvious choice to 

search for a studio; in part because much of 

my social life was happening there and in part 

because I find the city so beautiful and inspiring. 

Not only this, but Amsterdam offers so much 

opportunity for cultural experience and is home 

to many important graphic design studios. After 

doing some research on the internet I discovered 

van Lennep. I found their website cool and their 

clients really spoke to me. Toward the end of April 

I had an interview at van Lennep to discuss the 

possibility of an internship. The interview was 

a positive experience and after a couple days I 

received a phone call advising that I could start as 

an intern at the end of August. 

Preparing for an internship is really hard. It’s can 

be intimidating when you’re new and young and 

kind of inexperienced. However the previous 

internship at DOKS was a positive experience so I 

felt excited and confident to start something new. 

I decided to write my report in English, because I 

would like to work internationally in the future so 

I thought it would be clever to do. 

So there we go. 

I’m Alex van Manen. Born in Wageningen, the Netherlands on the 19th 

of August in 1996. I’ve lived in Veenendaal for the first 19 years of my life. 

At the moment I’m living in Amsterdam, which is really advantageous 

because my internship’s located here too. And it’s quite favorable for my 

social life too. 

I got my MAVO diploma since 2012, in that same year I started studying 

graphic design at Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht. 

At this moment I’m in my 4th year of my study. And hopefully, if 

everything goes as planned, I’ll graduate in June 2016. 

After Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht I’d like to learn and explore more. I’m 

not sure what’s in the future for me yet, but I hope to figure out some 

parts. Partly due to this report (hopefully) 

I’m creative, positive, easy going and modest. I also can be really 

concentrated and I’m a hard worker. 

I love music, art, photography, movies, architecture. (graphic) design, 

technology, fashion. I’m also into history, politics + the beauty & 

struggles of society.

van Lennep is a design studio located at the 

Lijnbaansstraat, next to de Jordaan, in the heart 

of Amsterdam. van Lennep’s founders are Jacob 

Mulder, Hugo Zwolsman and Stephan Achterberg. 

Colleagues 

van Lennep has six regular employees. In addition 

to Jacob, Hugo and Stephan the other three 

include Till, Ruben and Maaike. I think they’re all 

quite different yet they’re all very creative. In many 

ways, I think this makes a good team. Despite 

being all different ages the energy in the office is 

definitely very young. At times I’ve thought that 

some of the teachers at my school were not really 

getting the point of a specific design, that perhaps 

some of them are a bit old fashioned. I think these 

guys definitely embrace different designs and 

creative ideas. I also love how their enthusiasm 

always shows. For example, Stephan gets really 

excited when he finds a nicely designed website 

or advertisement on the internet, while Ruben 

can talk about a font as if it’s a family member. All 

of them are really excited and enthusiastic about 

a festival they’re bringing to Amsterdam called 

Northside. 

N festival (Northside) 

From the beginning of my internship I had heard 

a lot about Northside; a festival which will take 

place in Amsterdam North, September 2016. It’s 

a festival hailing from Brooklyn and Toronto and 

it’s all about discovery; discovering music, food, 

technology, entertainment and other exciting 

creative and innovative stuff. It reminded me of 

‘South X South West’ (from Texas) and our own 

Dutch ‘Noordenslag Festival’ a lot. I think the 

concept is great. Just like Brooklyn, Amsterdam 

North is really up and coming, fresh, urban but 

unlike Brooklyn, it’s also quite underappreciated. 

There are mixed opinion about the North and I 

think a festival like this will help to cast the North 

in a more positive light. 

One aspect I found really cool was that the role of 

the company in the Festival transcends just graphic 

design. At school we were designing (fake) stuff 

for festivals like Lowlands. Yet these guys were 

actually heavily involved in the concept, marketing, 

space and timing as well. I think it’s really cool, and 

I think that N Festival will be a great addition to 

the catalogue of festivals we have in Holland. It’s 

inherently different, because it’s about discovery. 

In that way, I think it’s on another level, 

wit’s inspiring! 

van Lennep undertakes work for a lot of 

different companies. 

Some of their clients are very cultural, like 

Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam (theater), 

Nationaal Toneel The Hague (theater), Tolhuistuin 

(concert venue), De Plantage (restaurant), and 

Oerol Festival Terschelling & Sziget Festival. 

They also design a lot of staff magazines. For all 

kinds of companies, from AMC (hospital) to KLM 

(airline), BDO (taxes) to MN (financial future 

provision). 

van Lennep also works for ABN Amro, a bank, 

NRC, a newspaper, and, my personal favourite, 

Artis (zoo). 

It’s really exciting to work for such well-known 

companies. It can feel crazy when you’re walking 

around in Amsterdam, and see posters from 

Stadsschouwburg everywhere. It reminds me 

that despite the fun van Lennep is doing serious 

business. 

Location & building 

As cited before van Lennep is located in the city 

centre of Amsterdam. It’s near to the 9 straatjes, 

de Jordaan en Leidseplein. The studio is very bright 

with a lot light coming in. There’s a beautiful big 

kitchen, a long dining table, and various places to 

sit for a conversation or to meet with a client. 

van Lennep works with MacBooks and iMacs which 

I also used at my previous internship and at school 

too. Fortunate, as it meant one less thing to get 

used to!

what’s my own style being 

a graphic designer? 

After being in school for two and a half years at Grafisch Lyceum 

Utrecht, a 5 month internship at DOKS and a 5 month internship 

at van Lennep I’vemade lots of different designs and seen and 

worked with lots of styles. I’m not sure I’ve developed my own 

style yet, but I think my personal style is always evolving.

Thanks to both my internship periods I had the chance to 

experience working at a graphic design studio. What am I going 

to do with those experiences? What did I learn and what from 

I’ve learned is really useful for my future? 

‘‘what’s your creative concept of all those fucking lines? It doesn’t make fucking sense does it.’’ 

I looked at the window. 

He stared at me. 

‘‘It’s a creative difference. Some people get blinded by lines easily. I think lines are quite important. 

Without lines you have no idea where to cross them. Life would be easier but definetely more boring 

without lines. What’s the thrill of life without them?’’ 

He stared at me. Knowing I was right. 

“I wanty to cross them with you, but I want to do it alone. I want to be independent.’’ he said. 

I know he should.

I guess that was where it started.

Just like the previous period I have a lot of forms in my map. 

The forms are very evident and it’s basically giving you all the main 

information you need. At least, from school’s perspective. So, of 

course I had help from my supervisor from school too. Marja Pronk 

came for a visit at van Lennep, the beginning of november. It was 

a very polorising conversation. Stephan, my practical trainer from 

van Lennep, gave me a lot of feedback. He told me he was convinced 

that I’ve got the right skills and a real ‘designer feeling’ to become a 

great graphic designer. But he also told me to focus more and work 

more secure.

A comment like that wasn’t completely new to me. I know I’m not 

focussed all the time, I think that’s really hard. It’s also really hard 

to stay creative all the time. Not being focussed enough is not that 

bad, but of course I have to make sure I’m doing everything the 

client wants. I can’t forgot 50% obviously. So- that conversation 

with Marja and Stephan left me with a lot of questions and things 

to think about. But the most important question was; what do I 

want to do next?

That’s one of the reasons I think I had a hard time thinking of 

learning objectives that would fit me and the state I’m in (as in; 

studying). I love graphic design and I do it with such pleasure, but I 

don’t really think I can do this for the rest of my life. When I say this 

to my parents, they’ll be like. ‘‘well you got to decide what you want 

very quick. You have to do another study after this one!’’ And I know 

I have to. I’d really like to actually. But I want to take my time and 

make sure I make good choices. I’m still young. I don’t want to look 

back at my life later and be like; I should’ve done this and that and 

I regret doing this. Ofcourse we’re all going to have that at some 

moment in our life I guess. But right now I want to make choices 

that make me happy, because after all, I’m doing this for myself, not 

to please someone else. 

So that will make my number one learning objective and general 

life question;

This is a complex one. Ofcourse this report is about my time at 

van Lennep. But it’s mainly about myself, what I’ve learned and 

experienced already and what I want to learn and experience in 

the future. About my enthousiasm, indistinctness and question 

marks too. And hopefully about outcomes. This is about my 

future.

As I already wrote in the text about van Lennep; they undertake 

work for a lot different companies. I’m really happy I had the 

oppurtunity to work for some of them. 

For the most assignments I did, there already was a grid. I did a lot 

of (staff) magazines. Most of them come out every 1 or 2 month(s) 

so obviously there’s a grid to make sure they all look alike everytime. 

But, of course there’s also space to design for me. Some of the 

magazines are having a theme everytime. Especially with Christmas 

time etcetera. Also the content varies by edition. It’s always 

different from each item design wise. So eventhough there was a 

grid most of the times, I still had freedom to create and design in 

the magazines.

I rarely did a job all alone. At van Lennep we often work together. 

+ I’m an intern so obviously they’re helping me. While designing 

big magazines (at least; bigger and more serious than I was used 

to) I learned a lot. At my previous intership I did a lot of posters 

(print) and Facebook promo material, like banners and flyers. That 

was nice but totally different from the assignments I got at van 

Lennep. I designed some magazines and attachments at school, 

but never serious like this before. So at first this was really hard for 

me, working in a file with a lot pages and content. 

After some weeks I learned how to work in those files, I learned to 

organize. It was getting easier for me. I learned lots of small things 

about Indesign here. Just things like short cuts and additional 

windows with effects and typographical techniques. Just a lot of 

things to work faster and easier. 

Now let’s take a look at some of my work!

Crossing lines is stricly personal. I was 

taught to make my own decisions. Don’t 

you see the the beautiful blue sky? The

our eyes. Why did you do it? Your intention 

is too abstract. You just crossed a 

line but do you feel different? You look 

like you didn’t want to.’’

Artis 

Artis is a zoo in the middle of Amsterdam. It’s 

also the oldest zoo in Holland. They bring a 

number of printed publications. The biggest one 

is a magazine about Artis, animals and nature. 

Making this magazine was super cool. It has a 

bright and sleek design. Artis’ corporate identity 

is very nice to work with. 

I also made some advertisements, they also appear in the booklet. 


Artis has set up an exploration/ collective route for children which I 

designed too!

KLM Overall 

KLM is probably Holland’s biggest and most 

famous airline. Overall is a magazine for their 

employees. It’s about all the new techniques, 

changes in their company. Overall magazine 

quite very modern and feels flat. It has a lot of 

textual content so it’s important to it keep easy 

to read. There’s a lot of contrast between the 

text and the visuals.

AMC 

AMC (Amsterdam Medisch Centrum) is the 

biggest hospital in Amsterdam and is also 

connected to the university of Amsterdam. 

Discours is a magazine for people who 

work in AMC. Discours is very bright, with 

some traditional and modern features. The 

photography is serene yet colorful.

Theater voor kinderen: we vinden het een noodzaak. Alles wat 

belangrijk is in het leven, zie je in het theater. En dat neem je een 

heel leven mee. Onze voorstellingen zijn natuurlijk ook gewoon 

leuk en spannend. Óók voor volwassenen. We zetten bij iedere 

voorstelling vanaf welke leeftijd deze geschikt is. 

Voor dansers, acteurs en decorbouwers in de dop organiseren 

we workshops onder begeleiding van ervaren theaterdocenten 

en technici. En wie zijn feestje wil vieren in het mooiste theater 

van Amsterdam (vinden wij van WC Eend), kan ook bij ons 

terecht. 

Trek je dansschoenen aan en kom dansen 

in de mooiste balzaal van Amsterdam: 

de Koninklijke Foyer van de Stadsschouwburg. 

Kom dansen is een 

dansworkshop speciaal voor kinderen. 

Ervaring is niet nodig, makkelijk zittende 

kleding wel. De kinderen leren een korte 

choreografie, die een mix is van streetdance, 

moderne dans en hiphop. Deze 

workshop is voor iedereen vanaf 6 jaar 

en duurt een uur.

Als je toneel speelt, kun je zelf verzinnen 

wat er gebeurt, wie je bent en hoe het 

verhaal afloopt. Improviseren: dat is 

ontzettend leuk om te doen. Wij geloven 

dat iedereen het kan. Alle kinderen die 

het leuk vinden om toneel te spelen en te 

leren improviseren, zijn van harte welkom 

bij deze workshop onder leiding van 

onze professionele theaterdocenten. 

De laatste 15 minuten van de workshop 

mogen ouders of andere bekenden 

komen kijken.

Een toneeltekst kun je op heel veel 

verschillende manieren uitspreken. Met 

dezelfde zinnen kun je totaal andere 

toneelscènes maken. In de workshop 

Spelen met tekst leren de kinderen daar 

alles over en gaan ze zelf scènes maken. 

De workshop wordt geleid door een 

professionele theaterdocent die ook als 

regisseur werkt.

Een dagje voor uzelf in de zomervakantie? 

Tijdens de Vakantie Dagen zijn de 

kinderen bij ons onder de pannen. Een 

dag lang zijn zij de sterren van de

gaan ze aan de slag als acteur, 

danser, regisseur, decorbouwer, tekstschrijver 

of kostuumontwerper. Tussen 

de middag spelen en picknicken ze in het 

Vondelpark. Elke dag heeft een ander 

thema.

This is one of the biggest and 

most famous theaters of 

Amsterdam, the huge building, 

which is really old and beautiful, 

is located at Leidseplein. So it’s 

just a 5 minute walk from van 

Lennep. van Lennep made the 

corporate identity for them. 

They’ve got a lot of plays and 

events in Stadsschouwburg. I 

made some posters and flyers 

for some of them. 

This is the agenda. It’s a big print, they hang it 

outside, next to the enterance.

Mariken, naar het prijswinnende en 

verfilmde boek van Peter van Gestel. 

Gebaseerd op het middeleeuwse 

Mariken van Nieumeghen, over een 

meisje dat op weg naar de stad de duivel 

tegen het lijf loopt. Kwatta kán de 

klassiekers: hun vorige, Dissus (naar de 

Odyssea), kreeg vier sterren van 

Theaterkrant. Mariken is muziektheater 

van voor kinderen van nu, met een live 

band.

ondergedoken Albanese jongen krijgt op 

een dag bezoek van een meisje. Ze heet 

Anne. “Zinderende regie. De vier olijk 

zingende en dansende acteurs leggen 

een stevige hartenklop onder het 

drama.” (de Volkskrant).

Spannend muziektheater met ridders, 

tovenaars en prinsessen. Het Engelse 

volk zit al jaren zonder koning. Alleen 

degene die het betoverde zwaard uit de 

rots los kan trekken, mag tot koning 

worden gekroond. Tot ieders verbazing 

lukt het de jonge Arthur. Theater Terra 

trok vorig jaar volle zalen met Ali Baba 

en de 40 rovers (“Spannend, liefdevol 

verteld verhaal”, Trouw ****).

Het bestuur en de directie van het Nationale Toneel en de Koninklijke 

Schouwburg hopen u om te kopen met een uitnodiging voor de première 

van De revisor op 16 januari a.s. in de Koninklijke Schouwburg. 

De revisor is een scherpzinnige komedie over hebzucht en ijdelheid. 

Niemand blijft buiten schot. Als ons de kans geboden wordt, zouden wij 

zelf de verleiding kunnen weerstaan om onze zakken te vullen? 

In een provinciestadje, niet ver van de grens, schuiven bestuurders elkaar 

links en rechts baantjes en dure cadeaus toe. Ondanks Randstedelijke 

bemoeienis, drugstoerisme en de mogelijke komst van asielcentra heeft 

men het prima voor elkaar. Dan ontvangt de burgemeester het bericht van 

de komst van een revisor, een incognito inspecteur uit Den Haag. Of erger: 

Brussel! De man is in no-time opgespoord en laat zich zonder gêne in de 

watten leggen. Dat het een arme sloeber betreft die wel een meevaller kon 

gebruiken, blijkt pas als hij al lang en breed weer verdwenen is. Maar niet 

met lege handen natuurlijk.

For most clients, the way they supply content is the same every time. 

Typically when I design a magazine there are separate text documents for 

each article. The visuals often link to the articles by number or name. They 

supply the content by mail or WeTransfer. When we have it, we put it in 

folders on our server. This allows everybody to work on the documents 

and to find all the content. 

When you’re designing something it’s obviously your job to make it look 

good. But it has to be logical too. It’s about getting the message of what 

people are trying to say, using graphic design to highlight it.

I think (self ) reflection is one of the hardest things in a process like this. 

I know what I’ve done in terms of work. And I know if it was good or 

maybe not so good sometimes, because of the feedback that people at 

van Lennep gave me. It’s not that I’m insecure but it can be hard to admit 

where you’ve gone wrong and where you could’ve done better.

I had such a great time at van Lennep. I really like the people, their clients 

and the location of the company. For me, it’s really hard to integrate into 

a company. I’m really social with people my own age most of the time. 

Communicating with older people it’s just harder for me. I really don’t 

know why, maybe it’s stupid. I’ve got the same thing with some of my family 

members and older people in general. I just don’t know what to tell them 

sometimes. It’s a weird thing, although I feel like I’m definitely not the only 

one that feels this way. In fact I’ve heard this from a lot of other students 

when they told me about their internships. I feel like the internship has 

helped me in being social with all people of all ages. Fortunately.

I worked as hard and with as much focus as I could, I really did my best. 

Sometimes it was just hard, because I wasn’t sure that I wanted to 

continue doing graphic design. Actually- at this point I’m not sure I will. I 

experienced struggles with the content and staying focused; at times I felt 

I wasn’t eager to learn more about graphic design. I really want to learn. 

The point is; I’ve been doing graphic design for almost four years now and 

I’m a bit done with it. I’d just like to do something else, hear about other 

things. I just want something to trigger me more. 

That brings me to my study, which I really like, I always did. But for a long 

time I had the feeling this is just not what I want to do for the rest of my 

life. When I told my friends, no one was really surprised. I think that maybe 

says enough. 

I love to design. I love to create. I embrace creativity; answer I’m really 

excited to search what to do with it.

Deciding what to do with your future is almost impossible. Long-term 

goals can never be sure. I guess that’s life. I think I’ve learned to embrace 

that fact and live more by the moment. There’s only one thing I want to for 

the rest of my life, and that’s to be happy. 

It might sound vague and maybe a bit cheesy too. But writing and thinking 

about your own future is hard and very complex. 

When I’m done with Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht I want to challenge myself 

more and I want to expand my creativity in art, work and life. I’m still very 

young at this point. I’ve got a lot to learn. The last five months at this 

internship have made me think about a lot of things. Things I’ve never 

really thought about. I’ve thought about my future a lot actually. I’ve 

thought about living on my own in Amsterdam, and experienced it. I’m 

sure I’m a lot more independent than I was 5 months ago. 

In my near future I know I will search for new challenges. I’m sure I’ll start 

new study; however, first I want to travel for a year. I think it’s necessary 

for me to take a break. Living on my own made me ‘thirsty’ to experience 

more. I’m looking for something new, scary and thrilling. But mostly 

something inspiring. There’s nothing else I’d rather want right now. I think 

traveling, and even living in another country will bring me to new levels of 

independence and creativity.

I’m really thankful I had the opportunity to do this course and that I 

undertook these internships. I love being creative and I enjoyed working 

in the graphic industry. 

Creativity is my favorite thing in the world. I hope to find something where 

I can put all my creativity to work. My goal is to find something I love doing

Writing this report has been really interesting. I find it pretty hard to talk 

about myself and especially about my future. That’s why I wanted to make 

my report really personal; I think I did a good job at that. Hopefully it is 

interesting and hopefully it is understandable. For me it’s nice to write it 

all down. I’m so curious what a 30 or 40 year old me might think of it were 

he to reads this. Handing it out and letting other people read this is kind of 

scary but also exciting.

So, enough about the content, there’s already enough said about that at 

this point. 

The feeling of this report is bold, modern, colorful and full of statements. 

At least, that’s what I wanted to achieve. I’ve been really inspired by 

modern art, poetry and typography making this report. I hope that 

shows. Of course Amsterdam is also a big inspiration. There’s so much 

going on in this city. I visited a lot of museums, bars, clubs and stores while 

I was living here. I think that’s where I picked up a lot of cool design ideas.

Thanks to van Lennep for teaching me about all kinds of graphic activities and 

giving me great jobs. It’s nice companies like van Lennep give students the 

opportunity to learn. They have to invest time in students like me and that’s 

not always easy but I think they’re doing a great job at that. 

Thanks to my parents for always supporting me. Thanks to artists, musicians, 

technicians, architects & other professionals for inspiring me. Thanks to my 

friends for inspiring me. Thanks to Lahn for helping me with my vocabulary & 

grammar. 

Amsterdam North, where I lived, is beautiful. It feels very blue and yellow. 

Like a harbor in dawn, like the beach, like an old warehouse where the sun 

shines through the broken windows. It’s also inspired by electronic pop 

music.

I love how sounds can be very bold and literally roll from left to right 

through your head when you’re listening to music through headphones. 

There’s so much going on in your head sonically and the music can still just 

consist of a pair of tones. They feel kind of separated but still you can still 

hear it as a whole, it’s one product. It’s amazing. I wanted to give this report 

that kind of feeling, but of course with paper and typography instead of 

beats and sounds. That’s why I designed a lot of pages with different small 

‘decorations’; often typographical. Maybe they seem a bit useless at first 

again 

but they stand for progress, future and question marks. Basically what his 

whole report is about.
