2016 CFB National Championship –Phoenix Recommendations and Guide
WELCOME TO PHOENIX, AZ!
As a native to Phoenix, I’d like to welcome Tiger Nation the Grand Canyon State and congratulate the
Clemson Tigers on their recent victory in the Orange Bowl!
I’ve personally experienced the polite and welcoming culture Clemson has to offer and I’d like to return
the favor by offering some recommendations and a general guide to Phoenix. On behalf of my home
state, I sincerely hope you enjoy your time in Arizona and would like to pre-emptively apologize for any
rude encounters you might have during your stay. Please do come back anywhere between Late
September and Late April for the best weather.
Use the highlighted Terms in Google to figure out Locations and Directions
1. Map – General reference to Univ of Phoenix Stadium
2. Golfing
3. Beer and Liquor/ Bars and Breweries / Nightlife
4. Restaurants / Hangover Cures
5. Shopping
6. Transportation – Lightrail
Take a Taxi or a DD - The Police will be out in Full Force (I’m talking Police State, 1984 Status, and they
will not be nice); there will most likely be DUI check points in and around the entire Valley for this event.
Please, please, please do yourself a favor and Call a TAXI (Best Rates and Reviews on Google are with
Great Value Taxi Cab: 480-332-3362, Book in advance and there is an Airport Rate you can receive) or
Drive Sober. I would suggest Uber but they will most likely have surge pricing. FYI DUI’s are Minimum
$5000.00 fine + 30 Day Jail Penalty in AZ.
2016 CFB National Championship –Phoenix Recommendations and Guide
Depending on where you are staying, you’re going to want to reserve a fair amount of time for driving
this weekend. Research a route before choosing a destination and gauge the time before committing.
Renting a car will most likely be cheaper than a cab ride to and from Univeristy of Phoenix Stadium to
Downtown (central city) or Tempe (Home to Arizona State University and Mill Ave.) and will allow you
the freedom to explore the vast metro area.
Golf Courses
As you can see, there plenty of Golf Courses to choose from.
1. Karsten Golf Course - (Highlighted) has great rates and you can enjoy a beer at the clubhouse or
at Four Peaks (a local favorite) afterward.
2. Top Golf – Scottsdale; Indoor/outdoor driving range offers views of the desert and mountains
with a bar only a few feet from where you are, think of a bowling alley but with fresh air, golf,
and you get to keep your own shoes on.
3. Don’t like either of those options? Google is your best friend. Ahwatukee has great courses too
but it will be a drive (Get it??) if you’re in the West Valley/Downtown Phoenix.
Phoenix Bars
Beer, Liquor, and Wine – DIY
Any grocery store will have both, please do not bother buying from a random liquor store, you will find
much better deals at any Safeway or Fry’s. If you are looking to stock up as soon as you get there, we
have Discount Liquor Stores such as Total Wine and BevMo throughout the Valley.
Beer- AZ is Home to some fantastic Breweries
Four Peaks – My absolute favorite for a relaxed and fun atmosphere with quality beer. Head on over to
the mainstay on 8 th Street in Tempe, just a block east of ASU
Arizona Wilderness Brewery – Located in Gilbert this Brewery has an awesome IPA and Duck Fat Garlic
Fries
O.H.S.O. Brewery – Gives a widespread variety of AZ brewed beers and you can also Brew your own and
come back in a few months to try it out! Dogs Welcome!
Angel’s Trumpet – Located Downtown, Awesome establishment for beer
Liquor
Hanny’s – Located in Downtown Phoenix; once a department store turned into a Bar/Restaurant; they
make a mean Bourbon Sidecar.
Bitter and Twisted – Located just a block from Hanny’s; this bar will set you up with something
incredible. I recommend ‘The Martinez’.
Wine
Postino – With Locations in Phoenix, Arcadia, Tempe, Gilbert (http://postinowinecafe.com/location/),
this Local favorite has the best happy hour from open (see link for location)-5pm; $5 Wine by the Glass
or Pitchers of Beer
The Vig – Half off wine on Sunday
Relax and Have Fun
The W in Scottsdale (Great Margarita’s), Club Maya (Outdoor Club, Think Vegas) or Basically any
backyard or hotel you are staying at (DIY required)
The Yard – Phoenix or Tempe; Massive and Extremely Fun
Nightlife – Let’s Celebrate
Westgate – If you’re staying near the stadium, there are plenty of Bars in this Area
Mill Ave – Next to ASU; Clubs, Irish Bars (Rula Bula), Billiards, Music, The Yard in Tempe is a 10 Min Walk
Downtown Phoenix – Bars, Music, Clubs, Old houses converted into Bars - All within Walking Distances
Downtown Scottsdale- Clubs and Bars, lots of Shopping and has the Old Western Feel in parts of it
Restaurants in West Valley (Unfortunately the game is located in Glendale and I am not familiar with the
area; please chime in if you have recommendations in this area)
Mexican Food – Oh Hell yeah
Los Favoritos – Valley Wide - Delicious Breakfast Burritos, Carne Asada Fries (Steak, Sour Cream, Guac,
Pico, and Cheese on Fries; Can easily be shared between 4 people)
Taco Guild – Located in Midtown Phoenix - Recently redeveloped church – Great Atmosphere; Better
tacos; and you can learn a little something about Tequila while you’re there. Try as many tacos as your
bank account allows
Gadzooks- Enchiladas; Fantastic Enchiladas – so good that I almost want to keep it a secret
Guedo’s – Childhood favorite located in Chandler; it is a bit of a drive but if you’re looking for the best
taco’s you will ever eat, I cannot recommend this place any higher. If you make the trip out to this area
be sure to check out SanTan Brewery just a couple blocks west; try the flagship Devil’s Ale, or the Winter
Warmer which is in season (you get a couple gingerbread cookies with each glass)
Burgers
Chuckbox- CASH ONLY (ATM on site) Located in Tempe, I’m not going to recommend anything else.
Chuckbox is to Arizona State as Smokin’ Pig is to Clemson.
Pizza
CIBO – Cool little place just north of Downtown; Call in for a big Party; Avoid a ticket or tow and valet the
rental just east of the building between CIBO and the Vig. Parking sucks in this area, sorry.
Pizzeria Bianco – Nationally Recognized pizza in downtown – call for reservation prior to going
Other Good Stuff
Cornish Pasty – F*!@#$% incredible food; $3 Car bombs all day every day.
Cheba Hut – 420 Themed Sandwich shop – I recommend the ‘Jamaican Red’ (FYI Marijuana Possession is
a Felony Charge in state of AZ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , no se amigo.)
Cartel Coffee Shop –Located in Downtown and Tempe; Grab a shot of Vodka with your Americano to
ease that hangover.
Four Peaks Again - $5 Bloody Mary’s on Sunday- Great brunch as well (just order whatever they have on
special and it will be worth it, I promise). Also, the water in Four Peaks is set to a certain pH level that is
identical to a natural stream in Germany; it is extremely refreshing.
Snooze – Several different types of eggs benedict, and pineapple upside down pancake – Highly
recommended for breakfast – call in to see the wait time.
Shopping
Malls are everywhere in the Valley. Scottsdale Fashion Square has 3 Floors, Chandler Fashion Center has
3 wings and 2 floors, Tempe Marketplace and the Biltmore Fashion Park are outdoor malls.
Transportation
Considering it is the National College Football Championship, I’m expecting for Uber and other ride
sharing services to have surged rates. Outside of the day of the game, if you are centrally located
(Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa or Scottsdale) you can get around using the Lightrail. It takes about
20 minutes to get from Tempe to Downtown Phoenix which is about the same amount of time it would
take with a car.
Lightrail – Convenient and clean, can get closer to your destination to take a cab if need be. FYI there are
more stops than the ones shown and the line is also an approximation as I could not find a current map.
Also, you can get to the airport on the lightrail.
Take a Taxi or DD - The Police will be out in Full Force (I’m talking Police State, 1984 Status, and they will
not be nice); there will most likely be DUI check points in and around the entire Valley for this event.
Please, please, please do yourself a favor and Call a TAXI (Best Rates and Reviews on Google are with
Great Value Taxi Cab: 480-332-3362, Book in advance and there is an Airport Rate you can receive) or
Drive Sober, there are also other Taxi’s in Phoenix beside this one; choose at your discretion.
I hope this guide has been helpful and given at least a general sense of what there is to do in Phoenix.
Please enjoy your time here, I hope you all have a wonderful experience and stay. Go Tigers!
