Historic Cemetery Walking Tour
The Monroe County Historical Association will be hosting a historic cemetery
walking tour on Sunday, October 4th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM The tour
will be held at the Stroudsburg Cemetery, Dreher Avenue, Stroudsburg and
will honor Stroudsburg’s Civil War veterans. This year marks the 150th
anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Guides will lead groups throughout
the cemetery visiting ten stations. Volunteers have conducted extensive
research on local soldiers, and the short presentations at each gravesite
include topics such as the life of a soldier, women on the home front, the
United States Colored Troop, headstone preservation techniques, and more.
Adding to the day, costumed members of the Pennsylvania 142nd Company
G Civil War reenactors will be available to answer any additional questions
and assist with graveside presentations. The group will host a stop along
the tour to showcase authentic Civil War artifacts and a hands-on display.
The Northampton Community College Band of Brothers (Monroe Campus)
will also be participating in this fund-raising event. The two groups are
partnering with the Monroe County Historical Association to raise awareness
of the area’s local history and to foster an appreciation for local soldiers,
both past and present. Pre-sale reservations are available and tickets
will be sold the day of the event. Parking is free and is permitted at the
Stroudsburg High School parking lot, 1100 West Main Street, Stroudsburg.
to promoting, protecting and preserving the rich history of Monroe County,
Pennsylvania. For additional information, please visit the website at
solve the mysteries themselves and decide which ghosts they believe.
• Mrs. Margaret Dilliard, the "did she or didn't she" convicted
accomplilce to her husband's 1889 murder in Moore Township will tell
her side of the guresome story. Did detectives frighten her into a false
confession, or did she really plot to do the deed?
• William Bartholomew was her alleged "paramour". Did he lure Mr.
Dilliard to his demise with squawking chickens? Or was he the victim
of vicious gossip? He went to the gallows swearing his innocence and
cursing everybody, especially Mrs. Dilliard.
• The spirit of Ralph Sobelson, the WW I veteran, long-time merchant,
theater operator, and first in the Slate Belt to Challenge the centuries old
Blue Laws, will patrol the aisles of his Strand Movie Theater.
• Expect to see Edward Marshall, the infamous "Walking Purchase"
runner, who made Native Americans so angry that they repeatedly
attacked his Slateford home and picked-off members of his family.
All proceeds will benefit the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit dedicated
to preserving Slate Belt Heritage. Ghosts will appear at the Heritage
Center, 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA on October 8th. Tours start every
What a Bride Wants:
Relaxation and
Sophistication Favored
Choices for Bachelorette
Parties
BPT) - As a rite of passage, the bachelorette party has long gotten a
bum rap. Stereotypes persist of the bride's night-before-the-wedding
gathering as a ladies-only version of the raucous bachelor party. Yet the
truth is, a growing number of brides crave a tasteful, relaxing and deeply
personal send-off for their single days.
In fact, a relaxing getaway ranked high as an ideal bachelorette party for
59 percent of brides-to-be in the Ultimate Bridesmaids Census. Sixtyseven
percent wanted dinner, dancing and time spent with their closest
friends, and 23 percent wanted something non-traditional that really
reflected their personal interests.
"Bachelorette parties are as unique as the women they celebrate,"
says Michael Belot, general manager of Destination Kohler - home to
AAA five-diamond and Forbes five-star hotel that hosts scores of brides,
bridesmaids and weddings each year. "We're seeing an emphasis on
relaxation for the bride and companionship with her friends in today's
bachelorette parties. Brides want to spend their special night - and often
an entire weekend - in a soothing, stress-free atmosphere before the
hectic pace of their wedding day."
So what are the things that brides and bridesmaids tell the Destination
Kohler team they must have for their bachelorette soirees? Belot points to
five in-demand elements:
1. Spa time - Whether it's a group mani-pedi, a yoga class or a lunch
of delicious, healthful spa cuisine, bachelorette groups crave spa time.
Parties are looking for spas that offer a comprehensive list of salon
services, familiar and new massages and body treatments, and easy
access to luxury accommodations. For example, at Destination Kohler,
bachelorette groups often book rooms in the Carriage House, which is
located above the Forbes five-star Kohler Waters Spa. Participants can
spend the day in their spa robes if they choose. "Kohler Waters Spa is by
far the most popular request and activity among bachelorette parties, and
is often the center of the trip," says Garrett Mersberger, manager of Kohler
Waters Spas. Playing to this trend, many resorts have created femalecentric
spa packages like the Girls Getaway.
2. Great food - Forget the pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and other
de rigeur finger foods long associated with bridal showers. Modern
bachelorette groups are looking for dining options that are luxurious and
delicious, or that accommodate lifestyle needs such as gluten-free or lowcalorie
diets. Spa fare often fits well with this preference. Resorts with
multiple dining options afford bachelorette guests the opportunity to dine
lightly for lunch and then enjoy a more indulgent dinner.
3. Bonding activities - Hitting the bar and dancing the night away are
no longer the only bonding activities for bachelorette groups. From yoga
classes and golf outings to wine and chocolate pairings, brides-to-be are
looking for more diverse, sophisticated activities they can do with their
girlfriends.
4. A location "away from it all" - Nearly a third of respondents in the
Bridesmaid Census said they didn't want to go crazy for a bachelorette
party, they just wanted to enjoy time with their friends. Perhaps it's
because their lives are about to change dramatically. Maybe it's a need
to reaffirm the girlfriend bond that has seen them through life's ups and
downs to reach this happy point in their lives. Whatever their reasons,
a growing number of brides are looking for a bachelorette experience
that transports them and their closest friends far away from their daily
routines. Some fulfill this wish by choosing a resort location far from
home. Others may choose accommodations that are more intimate. At
Destination Kohler, bachelorette parties can also opt to stay at Sandhill,
the resort's luxury private cabin that sits on 350 natural acres just a
10-minute drive from the resort.
5. Personalization - Twenty-three percent of surveyed brides said they
wanted a bachelorette party that was deeply personal and tailored to
their individual tastes and interests. For some, that's a spa experience.
For others, a golf getaway. Even when they've booked a bachelorette
package, brides and their bridesmaids are looking for ways the resort can
customize their experience. Add-ons are popular, from spa treatments to
wine tastings.
Bachelorette party experiences are becoming as individual as the
brides they celebrate, Belot notes. "Brides are not cookie cutter, so their
bachelorette parties shouldn't be either."

GrowingUp in the Butcher Shop
A Luncheonette Full of Memories
Ciao Amici,
While doing some treasure hunting I came across
an old newspaper, The Express from 1980, which
does not seem to be that long ago, but then again,
that was 35 years ago now that I think about it.
In the neighbors section of the paper I discovered
an article written by Lauri di Felice and I feel
this article really captures this wonderful lady I
Joe DeFranco remember; Mary Bert. When I was in grade school
I recall stopping at the luncheonette after having
lunch at home to meet my classmates and return to school. Mary always
looked at me with a feeling of belonging. As I’d walked in, she’d say, “Ok that’s
Joe, Succia and Marty’s son, no worries.”
This is that article I wish to share with you this week.…
Roseto – There’s only one thing more intriguing than Mary’s Luncheonette –
Mary. The 50-year old luncheonette is a world of red naugahyde booths, limp
school pennants, faded plastic flowers and old Pepsi-Cola advertisements.
Mary Bert, its owner, is 77. Her hot pink sleeveless dress, silvery styled
hair, red lipstick, quick wit and pace seem to make her much younger. ”The
kids think of Happy Days when they come in here, Mary says, “You know,
like the Fonz.” In The middle of the day in the middle of a recent week, the
luncheonette at 90 Garibaldi Ave. was empty. Mary sat at the front booth
peeling carrots. A customer walked in. His eyes followed countless souvenirs
suspended from the ceiling to photographs plastered walls to unplugged
pin ball machines ---to Mary. “Are you open?” The stranger asks. Mary Bert
looked up, smiling broadly, still peeling carrots, “If you want something, I’m
open. If you don’t, that’s ok too. What d’ you want?” The customer looked
amused and baffled and Mary Bert had just made another friend. Everybody
knows me she says. And they invite me to their weddings, I matched up a lot
of people in here, believe me.
To be continued next week ……
BENTONITE CLAY
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
Bentonite Clay is a “healing clay” that cleanses and heals the body.
M m It’s been used for hundreds of years around the world
to promote better health and keep disease from happening.
Bentonite Clay is composed of aged volcanic ash. This clay, also
called Montmorillonite, is the most effective and powerful healing clay. Bentonite can
be used externally as a clay poultice, in the bath and in skin care recipes for detoxing.
Some even use it internally to help rid of toxins even further. I don’t recommend
doing this with any brand of clay as they are not all created equal and it needs to
be pure. A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything that
is “pure white” should not be used. It has a very fine, soft feel and is odorless and
nonstaining. Bentonite clay has negatively charged electrons and most toxins and
heavy metals have positively charged electrons. This allows the two to bind together
and stay united while the toxin removal process happens. Bentonite clay “seeks”
toxins in the body to bind with because naturally any substance that has a missing
ion (which gives it its “charge”) looks for oppositely charged types of substances
that will make it complete. Once bound, the clay is then able to help remove toxins,
chemicals, impurities, and “heavy metals” from the gut, skin, and mouth that it’s
bound to. I give my kids baths in bentonite clay when they are feeling sick or I know
they’ve been exposed to pollution or chemicals. I make face masks and use it in
my deodorant and toothpaste recipes. I have yet to take it internally but it’s on my
detox to do list. Bentonite clay detoxifies and a lot more than just metals, it’s said
that it helps to remove disease, bacteria, fungi, parasites, chemicals, toxins, yeast,
molds, infections, poisons, and viruses as well. An interesting fact is that worms and
parasites are also clay eaters and when the clay is eliminated from the body so are
the worms. The clay recipes I use and recommend can be found at www.livingclayco.
com .
How to prepare a clay bath: To make mixing easy, start by mixing 12 cups (816 oz.)
of clay powder with 5 cups of water in a lidded container or in a blender, then add
to bath. An alternative method is to lightly sprinkle 12 cups (816 oz.) of clay powder
into the water as it is running, mix until fully dissolved. A whisk may be used to assist
in mixing. Take care, if a blender or metal whisk is used, to immediately wash any
clay residue off of the metal blades or wire hoops after mixing the bath. Soak for
1520 minutes. Submerge as much of your body as possible during the bath and stir
the water to circulate the clay. The more clay that is used in the therapy, the more
powerful the response. Drink water during and after the bath to avoid dehydration. If
the clay is dissolved adequately, it is safe for drains and septic tanks. How to make
your own clay mask: Cleansing Clay Mask draws out skin’s impurities and excess
oils, leaving it refreshed and purified. Bentonite clay for topical application may be
purchased premixed or made from Detox Clay Powder.
Combine clay powder to water at a ratio of 1 part clay to 3 parts water in a glass,
ceramic, or food grade plastic container with a nonmetal, airtight lid. For example: ½
cup (4 oz.) of clay powder to 12 ounces of water. Cover and
shake vigorously for about a minute or until all lumps are
gone. Larger batches may also be prepared using an electric
mixer or blender; however, take care to immediately wash
any clay residue off of the beaters. Allow the mixture to stand
for 15 minutes with lid slightly loosened to vent and allow for
expansion. **Never leave the clay in direct contact with
metals for long periods of time. For example don't leave
the clay in a metal bowl.
The clay's electromagnetic charge will act on the metal
severely limiting the clay’s ability to draw when applied
to the skin and may cause the metal to prematurely rust.
**Please consult your physician when starting any detox program.
Improve Your
Home's Energy
Efficiency this Fall
with These Smart
Winterizing Tips
(BPT) - Cooler temperatures and shorter days can only mean one
thing - winter is on its way. January and February are typically
considered the coldest months in the Northwest, Northeast
and Midwest regions of the United States. It can be tough for
homeowners to stay cozy inside without running up monthly
heating costs. Building professionals say fall is the ideal time to
consider winterizing your home for a more energy efficient and
comfortable winter.
Look for simple, affordable fixes.
There are some simple, inexpensive measures that homeowners
can do to ensure their homes remain energy efficient, warm and
comfortable. For less than $100, weather-stripping for windows,
a door sweep strip and some caulking can help fill any air leaks
to limit energy loss. Replacing the furnace's air filter every three
months can also help create a more comfortable environment
since a clogged filter can reduce the unit's overall efficiency and
lifespan.
Set the temperature.
Investing in a programmable thermostat allows homeowners to
monitor the indoor temperature of their home remotely via a smart
phone or online. Keeping the temperature low when no one is
home and programming the thermostat to increase the temperature
when everyone arrives home, annual heating costs can be reduced
anywhere between 5-15 percent, according to the U.S Department
of Energy. The same principle can be applied during summer
months to help save on cooling costs.
Prevent ice damming.
If ice damming on the roof is an annual problem, consider taking
measures to completely stop dams from forming. Major damage
can result from ice damming, so it's never too early to start
thinking about a long-term solution. Ice damming occurs when
warm, indoor air escaping through the roof melts snow on the
shingles. The water then refreezes as it runs off the roof, creating
a barrier of ice at the edge. Shovelling snow or chipping ice away
can threaten life, limb and roof, so it's best to consider more
permanent solutions.
Keep warm air inside.
While weather-stripping and caulking can help address air leakage,
the U.S. Department of Energy's Home Energy Saver website
says that proper air sealing insulation and attic venting are the
best methods to stop ice damming from occurring. Spray foam
insulation is a modern solution that both insulates and seals to
help stop ice damming. Installed by licensed professionals, spray
foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, works well in all
climates and fills in gaps and cracks to help stop air leakage as
well as ice dams formation.
As a long-term solution, spray foam insulation helps maintain
a comfortable temperature year round while helping to control

TIME TO SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME AND GARDEN 17
monthly heating and cooling expenses. Thanks to spray foam
insulation's air-sealing qualities, homeowners can reduce the size
of their heating and cooling equipment since less effort is required
to heat or cool the home.
While air leakage can play a role in higher-than-average
2015 NFL Football by T. Vatcher
Games to watch week 4
Thursday 10/1 8:25PM - Ravens vs. Steelers
A divisional rivalry kicks off week 4 of the NFL as the Ravens take on the
Steelers. The Ravens continue to look for an identity on offense while the
Steelers will look to keep Antonio Brown on his hot streak. Expect to see a
heavy dose of Bell and Brown as the Steelers roll easily over the Ravens.
Sunday 10/4 4:25PM - Packers vs. 49ers
The 4 o'clock games feature an intriguing matchup as the Packers travel
to California to face off against the 49ers. The Packers continue to fight off
injury after injury on their way to victory. The 49ers, on the other hand, look
like a different team every week. The way Rodgers is playing this season,
it probably won't matter regardless. Unless Kaepernick runs like he did two
years ago against the pack in the NFC Championship game, Rodgers should
have no problem carrying the Packers to a win.
Sunday 10/4 8:25PM - Saints vs. cowboys
With no Romo and no Dez will the Cowboys stand a chance against Bress and
the Saints? Any chance the Cowboys have will rely on this defense's ability to
contain Brees and the Saints' offense. Despite all odds, expect the underdog
Cowboys to rise to the occasion and come up with a huge victory.
Week 5
Thursday 10/8 8:25PM
A high powered offense lead by Andrew Luck squares off against JJ Watt
and the Texans defense. The Colts have been nothing less than disappointing
so far this season. The most talked about offense this off season has looked
pedestrian at best. The Colts will still be favored but Watt and the Texans
defense will give Luck trouble all night on their way to a close win.
Sunday 10/11 1:00PM - Bears vs. Chiefs
This game should mark the return of Jay Cutler to the Bears offense barring
any set backs. They will need it after getting beat down after Cutler left in
week 2 due to injury. The Chiefs will be looking to get Charles rolling against
a defense that doesn't fair well against a strong running game. The Chiefs
should have an easy road to victory taking down the Bears.
Sunday 10/11 4:25PM - Cowboys vs. Patriots
This show down will be the first real test the Cowboys will face since losing
Romo against the Eagles. Tom Brady and the Patriots will put Brandon
Weeden and the Cowboys' offense to the test as they try to keep up with
one of the highest scoring offenses in the league. Chances are the boys will
have to pass offend to try and out score the patriots and will have no shot at
beating Brady and Gronk at their own game.
27
It may be two weeks since my son and I got back from
our TWD Summer Road Trip, but we’re both still riding
high on the joys of the trip. Hard to believe a 53 year old
single Mom and her 14 year old son could travel 860
miles from PA to GA and not
want to rip each others throats
out like a starving walker. Add
to that, driving over 250 miles
around GA and then the return
trip to PA. Sure we had a few
hiccups, but nothing that took
away from the pleasure of our
adventure. Maybe it’s because
we don’t often get to just hang
out together. It’s usually all about
the day-to-day tasks at hand,
especially during the school
year. Or, it could be because
we were both equally excited
about touring the towns where
our favorite show “The Walking
Dead” has been filmed. More
than likely, it’s a combination of the two. Personally, I
feel that this trip has become another turning point in my
relationship with my son. And a positive one at that, but
the proof is in the pudding.
Most importantly, we did it. After months of talking and
preparing (booking hotels, ordering tickets and collecting
directions) it seemed like a far off fantasy that would
never come to fruition. Add to that the fact that many
thought I was crazy to consider driving that far for just a
couple days, let alone driving with my teenage son. Not
me though. I believed the TWD bond we have was strong
enough to over ride any issues that could arise. Plus, I
figured the thrill of exploring new territory would keep
us both in good spirits. Turns out, I was right about both.
When we got back to PA, we looked at each other with a
huge glint of satisfaction in our eyes and both said “We
did it!” We worked as a team, and accomplished our
goals and then some.
I preach about team work all the time, but, the
importance of the need for it at home just doesn’t seem
to sink in. It was a different story on the trip though,
my son found out very quickly how important it is when
traveling on the
overly crowded
highways and
byways of the good
ol’ USA. Especially
in the areas where
the speed limit is 70
miles per hour. My
unresponsive, not
very helpful at times
walker became my
wingman. And a
good one to boot.
He helped to keep
an eye on traffic
Me and my Wingman
THE OPTIMISTIC REALIST WINGMAN
PUBLISHED: July 30, 2014 - wakingthewalker.wordpress.com
when I was merging or passing, and, was the navigator,
which he thoroughly enjoyed. In addition, despite having
directions, we did need to consult the atlas and maps
on my phone in a few instances, which without his help
would have meant pulling off the
road, which would have added
to the already long trip, which
neither of us wanted.
He also learned a lot about the
responsibilities of driving. Seeing
first hand what it’s like to drive at
high rates of speed on crowded
highways made him realize that
you really have to have your wits
about you behind the wheel. I
do hope this experience pays off
when it comes to him learning
to drive in two years. We were
almost clipped by more than one
tractor-trailer during our travels
and this really shook him up, me
too, but, I already knew the dangers that the overworked
and under rested drivers of these metal menaces
traveling at high rates of speed can cause. In all honesty,
they are the reason I don’t take more road trips. They
take the pleasure out of the trip. The close calls did make
us both more vigilant when passing these beasts though.
My son even put his video game playing aside to be my
extra pair of eyes, which, for any of you who have read
previous posts know, is a huge feat.
It was these actions that made me realize my little boy is
really growing up, not just physically. I saw true glimmers
of maturity in him through out the trip. One of the biggest
being his optimistic realist reaction to missing Norman
Reedus at base camp by just 15 minutes. On the last day
of our adventure in GA, we decided to take some time
and go to the TWD base camp near where they were
filming. We both knew it was a long shot, but we were
optimistic. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, we would get
to meet or at least see one of the stars or producers of
the show. Our hearts sank when we found out Norman
had just left about 15 minutes prior to our arrival, but
all hope was not lost because Melissa McBride and
Denise Huth were still on set, so we decided to hang
out for awhile. After two hours we knew our window of
opportunity was closing. They had started to pull trailers
off the lot which was an obvious sign this base camp
was shutting down. Added to that was the fact that the
hours of the day were dwindling, and we had to start
our long journey home the next day. At this point we
threw in the towel and headed back to the hotel. As we
drove, I asked my son if he was disappointed. He said
yeah, but, he knew it was a long shot, so he kept his
anticipation at bay. I thought wow, how grown up of him.
I was thoroughly bummed and mentally blaming myself
for not getting us out of the hotel earlier which would
have gotten us to the base camp sooner. How could my
normally doomsday thinking son be so upbeat about
the outcome? Then it dawned on me, he was being an
optimistic realist. I try hard to be one myself, but, in a
case like this it certainly wasn’t easy. I had to take a cue
from my son and accept the fact that what is to be will
be and in this instance it was not.
Considering the theme of our road trip, I couldn’t help
but let my mind meander into the world of “The Walking
Dead.” I began to think about the characters and who
would fit the optimistic realist best. My thoughts instantly
went to Glenn Rhee (Steven Yuen). He sees the world for
what it is, but continues to fight for survival, believing
all is not lost, especially since finding the love of his
life, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan). He hasn’t once
considered opting out. In addition, Glenn, is the ultimate
wingman. He always has everyones back and he’s
always available to help wherever help is needed. If it
wasn’t for Glenn, Rick would have never navigated his
way through the horde of walkers outside of the tank in
downtown Atlanta. Not that he hasn’t had to take the lead
on occasion, particularly when Rick’s mind went AWOL
after Lori died and Daryl left with Meryl. As he said “With
Daryl gone and Rick wandering around on the crazy train,
I’m next in charge.” He’s content to be the wingman, but
when needed he’s willing to take charge. He is capable
of leading and as the seasons have progressed, has
really come into his own, but, his dependability is what
has made him a
key player for the
survival of the
group.
The amazing
thing is that my
son sees this too.
When I asked
him who he
thought was a
prime example
Glenn and Rick to the rescue
of an optimistic
realist, he immediately said Glenn. He also didn’t flinch
when acknowledging Glenn as an example of the perfect
wingman. So, the key thing is, if my son sees this, and
has shown glimpses of these traits, will they become
habits with maturity? I certainly hope so, for his sake
and mine. The one thing I do know though, is that I will
use our TWD Summer Road Trip as a precedence with
which to build upon. My son proved to me he is capable,
and then some, of being dependable and positive even
in the face of adversity. So, when he starts to fall back
into his old ignore my chores, negative naysayer, I will
gently mention that he has the potential to be Glenn in
our group. Hopefully this will be all I need to say for him
to know I need my optimistic realist wingman present all
the time, not just on a road trip.
Speaking of our trip, I would be remiss if I didn’t
share details of our adventure, but to keep this post
from getting too long, I’ve decided to split it into two.
Tomorrow I will post a detailed itinerary of our TWD
Summer Road Trip. Any true TWD fan won’t want to
miss this.
St Luke's U.C.C Belfast Rally Day
Along with many churches in the Slate Belt area, St. Luke’s United Church
of Christ in Belfast also celebrated Rally Day on Sunday, September
13th. Although the exact date of its origin is unknown, Sunday School
teachers in the New England churches began having a special Sunday
each fall to “rally” the students back to Sunday classes when the flurry
of summer activities ended. The leaders’ intent was to challenge the
students to become extra excited about learning their spiritual lessons.
Presently, Rally Day is more often used by church leaders to challenge
the adults in church to rally around the activities of the church and to
become re-involved in the work and study that occurs in the fall, winter,
and summer months. At St. Luke’s, the celebration of Rally Day this year
A fall Craft beer sampling was held on Saturday,
September 12th, at Three Brothers Beverage.
The event was sponsored by Three Brothers Beverage and The Slate
Belt Chamber of Commerce, Those who attended enjoyed Craft beer
samplings, food, and music and raffles for prize give aways. Donations of
canned goods and school supplies were collected for local families.
