Salmon
Tikka
•
By AWARD-WINNING Chef Abdus Shahid
Prep Time
25 mins
Cooking Time:
10 mins
Serves 4
We have all heard of Chicken
Tikka, but have you ever been
more adventurous? Why not try
my Salmon Tikka Recipe...
Method
1. Add yogurt to a cheese cloth and drain off
excess water or whey. You will be left with
thick yogurt. You can even hang it inside the
refrigerator to make hung curd.
2. Wash and peel of the Salmon skin, if cannot
just proceed. Cut them to equal cube sized
pieces, remove the moisture from them using
disposable or absorbent tissues.
3. Mix all the marination ingredients and marinate
for at least 2 to 12 hrs.
4. Soak the wooden skewers for at least 30 mins in
water to prevent burning.
5. Remove the excess marinade and put them on
to skewers. Preheat the oven to 240 C, bake for 10
mins and then on 180 C for another 5 to 10 mins. I
suggest you to check after 15 mins.In between you
can baste the marinade to the tikkas to prevent
them from drying.
Ingredients
• 400 to 500 grams fish fillets
• 3/4 to 1 cup regular thick yogurt
• 1 ½tsp. red chili powder
• 1/8tsp. pepper powder
• 1½tsp. ginger garlic paste
1/8 tsp. turmeric
• 1/2 tbsp. kasuri methi / dried fenugreek
leaves (crushed) (optional)
• 1 to 2 tbsps. Lemon juice (skip if using
sour curd)
• 1/4 tsp biryani masala powder or ½ tsp
garam masala
• 1/2 tsp coriander powder (I do not use)
• Salt to taste
• 1 tbsp. oil (can skip if you are using
salmon)
• 1 to 1 ½ tbsps. besan/ chickpea flour
(optional)
• 2 uncooked poppadoms
The Beccles Halloween Ball is back in town...
Something rather creepy is going down in
Beccles this Halloween.
Following the success of last year’s first Beccles
Halloween Ball, the Glitterball team are back with
their spectacular Halloween Ball II on Saturday
31 October 7-11.30 at newly refurbished Beccles
Public Hall. This year the theme is circus and
promises to be bigger and better than last year’s
sell out event.
At Glitterball events the guests as well as the
artists are the stars of the show, so expect the
unexpected at this quirky bash which is fast
becoming a ‘must do’ fixture on the Beccles
calendar drawing an audience from far and wide.
The event compliments the longstanding and
ever popular Beccles Ghost walk.
Glitterball’s Alice Denham says: ‘The acts are
a closely guarded secret. We’re working with
local professional cabaret artists to put on some
spine-tingling performances including a major
ITV talent show winner - we’re so excited! All
proceeds go to local charities which this year are
the Beccles Station project, Beccles NSPCC, The
Beccles Public Hall and Beccles Lido.
Tickets are available online now from Beccles Public Hall
BEST
BOOTS
THIS AUTUMN
It’s finally here, and by it I mean the
rain. And the wind. And the cold.
Which means we will all be adding and extra
layer, pulling out the scarves, thick socks and
boots in preparation.
With this in mind I thought I would give a few
recommendations regarding the best footwear to
get you through the rougher weather.
By DANIEL FRANCIS
First things first; you need to consider the
material. Tuck away anything made of suede or
fabric for the next months.
16
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2015 | 2015 ISSUE | ISSUE #36 | #36 FASHION
FASHION
These types of shoes are likely to become
stained and damp thanks to the rain.
Leather is your friend during the coming
months. However, be sure to take care of
any leather items by carefully protecting
them with a water repellent. You need to
ensure you are regularly moisturising and
polishing them too.
Boots are likely to be your go to option for
your day-to-day use. They’re perfect for
casual events but with the right style, can
be dressed up nicely too.
If you want a really smart look go for a
Chelsea or brogue boot. If you favour
comfort above all then you can’t go wrong
with a quality hiking boot.
There are so many different options in each
of these styles for both men and women
meaning you won’t have to go far to find
what you want.
Don’t forget there will be the odd dry day
throughout the coming months and you
might want to wear something a little
smaller or easier.
Even shorter styles, such as penny loafers, come
in a leather option.
This allows you to keep it easy without losing
your style.
Be brave with colours too. I’ve seen some great
burgundy and blue leather shoes which are sure
to help you stand out this season. They’ll also
help jazz up your outfit when attending any
festive gatherings (but more on that another
time)…
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2015 | 2015 ISSUE | ISSUE #36 | #36 FASHION
By Zee Battersby
I’m not old i’m
retro
I’ve just launched my
new fashion blog
imnotoldimretro.wordpress.
com
Welcome to my new Bounce monthly column… Ok so firstly a little bit
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 42, a mother and a grandmother.
I’ve wanted to start a blog for sometime now,
for women like myself who are the other side
of 30/40 and are a bit more on the alternative
side!
My aim is to inspire others to swap ideas and
tips, give each other confidence and more than
anything i’d like my blog to be a place anyone
can visit.
There are so many blogs out there, all fantastic
for women my age, but I can’t relate to any of
them. So this gave me that little push I needed
to start my own which I have
recently launched.
Along with this I have also
been given the opportunity to
share my thoughts with Bounce
readers. Each month in my
Bounce column I will be posting
fashion updates and ideas from
my blog, the classic ‘what I’m
wearing today’ features along
with real life interviews from
other women, like myself, who are considered
“way out there” when it comes to fashion.
I’m not a size 8 and I don’t have a huge budget,
but I believe fashion is solely about your very own
interpretation of something,
along with being comfortable
and secure enough in
yourself to have the
confidence to experiment.
I don’t edit my photos except
for any kind of colour enhancing
filter! Who doesn’t hey? I’m also
yet to inform my husband he’s the
official photographer!
Of course I will be featuring some
of my very own fashion howlers as we go along
just to give you all a laugh! We’ve all had them.
I also want to feature
you ladies, so if you are
individual and would
like to be featured
please get in touch.
Along side my fashion
advice, I have a beauty
background so I will
be covering beauty
and make up tips too.
It’s not just for ladies…
Every so often I will feature men who are also
over 40 and alternative.
My husband is as “out there” as I am, he’s a Mod/
Suedehead and supports all my fashion choices
(this also includes the times I decided to cut my
own hair with kitchen scissors… not always with
the desired results!)
So thank you for joining me on my journey, tell
all your friends and welcome to ‘I’m not old I’m
retro!’ into Bounce Magazine and on the world
wide web.
What is a Mod?
Mod is a British youth subculture from the early
60s to mid. Throughout the decades pasted the
mods have re grown and faded and re-grown
again though. The main draw of Mods was
their unique fashion style including their main
accessory: Lambretta or a Vespa. Mods love for
specific music such as ska, soul, northern soul
music and r & b also played a massive part in this
Real Brides Q&A
By Catherine Starling-GUNFIELD
Catherine from Angelic Weddings gives her advice to
some of her brides to be in the lead up to their big day.
Q: “What is the most commonly overlooked aspect of wedding
planning?”
A: “The most overlooked is budgeting for those small things that
soon mount up for example postage for save the dates, invitations
and thank you cards, bridal dress dry cleaning, dress box and ring
cleaning. Make sure you have a certain amount budgeted
for ‘miscellaneous’ expenses. Also do make sure that all quotes
from suppliers include VAT if applicable, for budgeting.”
Q: “What do brides tend to leave to the last minute and shouldn’t?”
Elizabeth
January - Long Melford
Church & Le Talbooth,
Dedham
A: “I often hear of brides just simply running out of time especially
if they are taking on a lot of DIY, remember to start early and
pace yourself, the weeks approaching your wedding day can
fly by.”
Q: “Are there any other options/ways which make the first dance
less daunting as it looks a little nerve racking?”
A: “If all eyes upon you when dancing fill you with dread think about
ways to make it more fun or involve Guests. Perhaps have your
respective parents or wedding party dance with you!
There is no rule to say you have to have a first dance at all, perhaps
popping balloons to signal the disco/band is starting and go straight
into a fun upbeat song where everyone joins you on the dance floor.”
LOUISE
September - Hawstead
Church, Suffolk
Q: “Are save the date cards worth sending?”
A: “If you are getting married peak wedding season (May-August),
during the week or at Christmas time then we highly recommend
some form of save the date be sent, be it a traditional card or a
simple email or something fun like a fridge magnet.
Remember only to send to those guests you plan on inviting to the
whole day.”
Q: “When should Save the Dates be sent”?
A: “Really as soon as you have your date set with your venue(s) or
around 12 months before your big day.”
Q: “Do you use a similar design to your main wedding invites?”
A: “Not necessarily, they can be quite different in design to the
invitations and venue stationery as many couples colours, themes
and style trends change over the course of planning. That said there
is something rather lovely having all matching stationery as many
guests keep their save the dates, invitations and place settings as
keep sakes.”
MEGHAN TRAINOR
BOUNCE INTERVIEW
We catch up with Meghan
Trainor about her whirlwind
year...
You signed your record deal just last February
so in just over a year you’ve gone from
being a successful, but relatively unknown
songwriter, to being a Grammy nominated
global star…
M: Grammy nominated…that’s me!
What was it like finding out you were
nominated for two Grammys?
M: Epic. A person who makes music only
dreams… Dreams in life are to get Grammy’s.
And I’ve done that at 20 years old, now I’m
21. But, to win it is a whole other game but,
just to be nominated for the rest of my life,
I’ll be introduced as ‘Grammy nominated
Meghan Trainor’. That’s fricking epic!
It’s an incredible achievement, especially
considering that you are only 21. It’s been
such a whirlwind year for you, as you’ve been
writing for other artists, now you have one of
the biggest selling songs ever (‘All About That
Bass’ has sold over 6 million copies), that’s
your own.
M: Yeah! I lived… all my friends are
songwriters and producers and I’ve lived all
their dreams. They all tell me that, they’re
like, ‘you accomplished what we try to do
every day’! ‘Cause as songwriters like, yes
our goal is for other popular singers to sing
our songs, but the real goal inside is like, we
want to be singing these.
You get to do both though - Sledgehammer
(that Meghan wrote for Fifth Harmony) is
getting massive too.
M: Yes – thank you! I wrote that with Michael
Keaton’s son. Isn’t that mind blowing? Sean
Douglas, he’s a fantastic writer. He also wrote
Glow by Demi Lovato. He’s crazy, he’s great.
I love Demi.
You’ve also had artists like Beyoncé saying
that they’re fans of your music.
M: Yeah, that, that was huge for me!
And Michael Buble did a cover of ‘All About
That Bass’ on Instagram.
M: I’m obsessed with him. One of my goals
in life, like off my bucket list, is make sure
Michael Buble knows I exist and like the
fact that he sang my song I died. I saw it on
Instagram and I was just, I remember I was
laying in bed and I just got up and was like
‘MUM did you see it?’ she was like ‘I SAW IT, I
SAW IT!’. Like I’ve went, I’ve been to like five
concerts maybe, and his was one and I cried.
I was like ‘oh he’s so good on track, he’s
probably terrible live’. And he was better
live. He’s so funny.
‘All About That Bass’ was so big in the States
and has consequently gone global. Quite
often with artists, they’ll launch in their own
countries first and they’ll break there, and
then focus on other countries, but with you, it
all just happened all at once…
M: Yeah, this is my first time being here and
my song has - I already have two songs that
are like, huge. Which is crazy.
‘All About That Bass’ has become a global hit
and was #1 here for 4 weeks. Did you have
a bit of an inkling that it was going be so
successful when you were writing it?
M: As a songwriter, I went to my favourite
songwriters and they said ‘how do you know
you had a hit?’ and I said ‘it’s the ones you
never guess, it’s ones you never know’ and I,
we did ‘All About That Bass’ and we shelved it
and we were, I was like ‘cool song, whatever.
No ones gonna hear this. No pop star can sing
this ‘cause they’re all fricking size zero’s and
no one can rap and sing’. So the fact that this
was probably my biggest song of life, it was
one of those, I had no clue. And what you here
today is what the demo is. No auto tune or
nothing, I walked out of the studio and that’s
what I heard and that’s what’s plays everyday.
The feedback of the song was great,
especially that it’s become rather an anthem
for body confidence. It’s just a fun positive
song.
M: Oh it’s the jam. And the only time, and I
still didn’t like it I didn’t understand it. I didn’t
get why it was bumpin’. But I heard it on an
Instagram video like in the background and I
was like ‘Oh I get it. This s**t bumps like… this
is the jam! I get it now’.
Have you ever like been anywhere and it’s
come on?
M: Yeah, it’s weird. I remember, the only part,
the only time that I got really weirded out
was, I was home on my island and I went to
a sushi place. I walk in and ‘Lips Are Movin’
is playing and five minutes later ‘Bass’ plays,
and then ‘Lips’ plays again. And I was just like
‘damn I’m famous. Like it’s real’.
Do you remember where you were the first
time you heard your song on the radio?
M: Yeah, ‘All About That Bass’. I was with my
producer we were in Nashville. And I was just
balling ‘cause, not because it was the first
time, but ‘cause it sounded good! And I was
like ‘Ah I thought it as gonna sound so bad on
the radio, ‘cause distortion and no like eight ‘o
eights’. But sounded great!
I guess it’s one of those things that when
you’re so involved in a song, you do go into
a bit of a bubble as you hear it so many
times, and then if you hear it in a situation
that’s completely removed from that you
can almost look at it from an outsiders
perspective.
M: Yeah, yeah. I finally just, and when I
perform it is when I’m like ‘oh this is the jam,
everybody sing and dance’ and it happens.
What’s your personal favourite track on your
debut album ‘Title’?
M: It changes everyday, but today it’s ‘Bang
Dem Sticks’.
You’ve got the duet with John Legend on
there.
M: Yeah and I produced that! I was very proud
of my self and I was like ‘I need one song on
here that I’ve produced because I’m been a
producer since 13, give me somethin’! And
yeah, I got a lot of crap for putting like ‘Bang
Dem Sticks’ and ‘3am’ on there because
they’re like, ‘it’s not Doo Wop’ and I was like
I don’t care! I’m a songwriter, and these are
my favourite songs and I’m a fan of this so
I’m gonna put this out. And its been reacting
amazingly… like ridiculous. My management
manages him so I sent them the song with
just my vocals on it and they played it for him
without telling me and he said I would love
to be a part of that. I was like ‘oh who? John?
Sure, fine, let him have it’.
The album was also co-written and produced
by Kevin Kadish, who has some amazing
songs in his back catalogue. ‘Stuck’ by Stacie
Orrico, for one.
M: Ahhh! Listen, I was his biggest fan as a
songwriter and he did Jason Mraz too. He did
‘Geek In The Pink’ and he did ‘It’s all about the
wordplay’, that one, Dude! So I walked in there
37
OCTOBER 2015 OCTOBER | ISSUE 2015 #36 | ISSUE | BOUNCE #36 FEATURE
trying to be cool and was like… ‘I listen I rap’,
he was like ‘okay’, I was like ‘and I like Doo
Wop’ he was like ‘cool’, and I was like ‘and I’m
not a size two’!
And then we wrote about it and we were like
‘do you like it?’ he was like ‘I like it dude’ I like
it. But I was such a fan, like to the end of the
album I kept telling him ‘I’m still star-struck
by you’.
It’s crazy and no one gives him enough credit
and that’s why this is a big moment for him
too like, I’m just so happy he’s on this. It’s just
amazing to see his face at these number one
parties; it’s just like what the hell.
Any songs that you listen to and think ‘damn
I wish I could’ve written that’?
M: Got it! ‘Halo’ by Beyoncé. What. A. Song.
I was thinking about this morning like damn,
those lyrics. ‘Remember those walls I built,
baby they’re tumbling down’. Also ‘Mistletoe’
by Justin Bieber. Thought that was one of the
best Christmas songs I’ve ever heard!
That whole Christmas album though, I love it.
M: That’s where my favourite, my Justin Bieber
fan is. I tell, his people keep coming to me like
‘we need songs for him’. I said put him with an
acoustic guitar stop doing this gangsta stuff.
Show his vocals. I said he’s got the fan base
of Elvis, he’ll never go away, but make them
respect him again. Give him those songs.
So how’s it been flying around the world and
visiting loads of different countries?
M: It’s amazing. It’s one of those things that
at 20 years old, I could, I can say I’ve been
Australia, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK.
And a lot of 20 year olds can’t say that. They
can say they’ve studied abroad but in one
place.
Have you got a favourite country that you’ve
visited so far?
M: This ones the prettiest, and I’m not saying
that ‘cause you’re here! This one reminds me
of Germany for some reason, my view was
exactly the same. But the food in Germany
was outstanding.
Have you had any food here yet?
M: No... I mean I’ve had like hotel food, it was
great.
For some reason we always seem to get
quite a bad rep for not having the best food
here.
M: Really?! Nando’s kills it.
You’ve got to love Nando’s
M: All I’ve eaten was chicken from the hotel,
which was bomb, and then Nando’s chicken.
I’ve only eaten chicken since being here.
Do you bring any home comforts with you to
have on the road?
M: I have a stuffed animal named Paddles that
I recently got it’s a Penguin. He’s kinda famous
on Instagram. I bring him everywhere. He’s
great.
Also, my mums jewellery, ‘cause they can
never come with me, but I love looking at
these to remind of them. She designed them
and everything, and [POINTS TO GOLD RING,
WITH THREE JEWELS] its of me and two
brothers so its like symbol. Then my father
made this one [POINTS TO BRACELET].
He was a musician forever, and then he was
just like ‘I want to be a jeweller’.
He must be very proud of you, especially
considering he was a musician.
M: Yeah, he was a band teacher at one point
but he has always said ‘make sure whatever
job you choose, just be the best at it’, so
he’ll always win like ‘the best jeweller on
Nantucket’ and then getting the Grammy’s I’m
kinda like, best song of the year, best. Did it!
Will you do the Sketches for SNL?
M: Oh imagine! My buddy Blake Shelton’s
about the host it and he’s like ‘do you wanna
come do a skit?’ I was like yes call me.
Meghan Trainor’s debut album ‘TITLE’ is out
now.
Relax...
In a busy life muscle tension and tightness strikes
all of us at one time or another and we may not
even be aware of it.
Muscle tension can be caused by staying in the
same position for a long period of time, not
exercising and not stretching, repetitive motions
or anxiety.
When the body is stressed, muscles tense up, it
is almost a reflex action to stress. Many people
clench their teeth and frown while driving or
working.
Constant tension in the upper back and neck
from unconsciously tensing your body can create
serious muscle imbalance, cause a lymphatic
drainage congestion, which in turn can decrease
immunity and the removal of toxins. It has an
effect on virtually every system in the body.
Regular exercise and osteopathic treatments
can help to ease the tension. We can identify the
areas that need to be treated and teach you the
appropriate exercise for your condition.
Questions
for Dr Bella Smith
Group B strep Infection
A close pregnant friend asked me today
about ‘Group B strep’ and what it means.
You may have heard about it recently in
the media or have been told you had this
infection in the past, so I thought I would
try to shed some light on it.
Group B streptococcus is a bacteria that
20-30% of the population (men and
women) have inside their gut or living on
their bodies. This is perfectly
natural and normal.
Around 20% of women have
been found to have the bacteria
in their vagina. This bacteria is
not sexually transmitted and can
be diagnosed from routine vaginal
swabs or from urine samples. Most
women who have this bacteria are
completely without symptoms and
don’t know that they have it.
A Group B Strep infection becomes more
important during pregnancy, labour and
childbirth. There is evidence that the
mother may be at increased risk of urinary
infections, miscarriage and a post-birth
infection of the womb.
There is also a risk for the newborn baby
of blood poisoning, pneumonia and
meningitis. Even if the mum has had a
course of antibiotics during pregnancy
they may still have the infection during
birth. It is important to say that many
women have this bacterial infection and
go on to have normal births and healthy
babies.
Current guidelines advise that all women
who are known to be carriers of Group B
strep, either from previous pregnancies or
from previous Urinary infections, should
be offered intravenous antibiotics during
labour to protect both themselves and the
baby from infection.
This is fine if we know the mum has
the infection but what about all those
pregnant women who have never had
the infection but want to
know? This has recently
caused a great deal of
debate about current
screening for Strep B and
a campaign called ‘Why
Guess?’ that you can find
on this website www.
gbss.org.uk. Current
NICE guidelines do not
recommend screening as
the advantage of screening has not been
demonstrated in the UK.
If you have been told that you have had
a Group B strep infection in the past it is
important that this information is in your
medical notes and passed on to your
midwife. If you have any doubt about a
previous Group B strep infection or want
to find out more information have a chat
with your GP.
THE SELF CENTRE
Slow down, Relax
Listen...
Summer has come to a close and
autumn is upon us. The last of the
harvest will soon be brought in and our
attention will naturally creep forwards
to winter and the colder months ahead.
As the nights draw in so do our thoughts. There
is a sense of quietening, a slowing down of the
earth which will affect those that listen. The world
is winding down in anticipation of its long sleep,
the air turns damp and crisp, the leaves golden
and our breath billows like a dragon’s.
At the end of the month we celebrate Halloween,
the one night of the year when our loved ones
can come back to visit us. The veil between the
worlds thins and we can almost reach across.
Summer’s energy is waning and we turn to
comfort and warmth, putting away our summer
things to prepare for the winter. It is a time to
ponder and make plans for the coming months.
As a species, we are often very good at slowing
down for others, we give our time and listen
but we are not always as good at listening to
ourselves.
44
So why not take some time this month to do a
self check-up. Spend a few minutes each day, as
you wake or just before sleep, to find out how you
are and make some changes. Slow down, relax
and listen.
Your body:
Lie down comfortably and focus on your breath,
is it easy and calm or does your chest feel tight
and laboured? Listen to your muscles, are they
tense or relaxed? How are your joints, do they
ache and feel out of place? Does your body feel
heavy and weighed down or clean and healthy?

Your mind:
Next, clear your head by focusing on
breathing and then listen to the quiet
in your mind. Does it chatter away in
the back ground? Is it complaining
and criticising or does it praise and
encourage? Do you like what you hear?
your
voice
Your heart:
When you have finished, concentrate on your
breath again and then listen to your heart. Are
you at peace or troubled? Is there someone you
need to talk to? Something you need to let go?
Something you need to bring you joy?
Now that these tasks have been completed, what
did you learn? Write the answers down whilst
they are still fresh. What do you need to do? Are
there changes to be made? Can you take small
steps to bring your life back on track? What help
do you need? Make yourself a plan of action, look
at each area of life and set achievable goals with
exciting rewards.
Domestic
violence
It’s no longer just Sticks and Stones...
‘He glared at me, shouting ‘You’re a leper, you
suck people dry. Everyone hates you, your
children hate you. You have no friends and you
will die alone.’ I pleaded with him to stop. I was
sobbing, but he just carried on screaming at me,
louder and louder,’
The old nursery rhyme of ‘sticks and stones may
break my bones but words will never hurt me.’
may have been good advice in the playground
but is certainly not true of domestic violence
where emotional and psychological abuse can be
more scarring and harder to recover from than
physical abuse. One of the reasons is that the
damage is not immediately apparent. Get a black
eye and the hurt is there for all to see, but mental
scarring has always been much more difficult to
define.
Under the Serious Crimes Act 2015, the definition
of domestic abuse has been widened to include
the offence of ‘controlling or coercive behaviour
in an intimate or family relationship. When this
law comes into force, the offence will carry a
maximum sentence of 5 years.
What is controlling and coercive behaviour?
The law says that it will be illegal for an intimate
partner or family member to repeatedly or
continuously engage in behaviour towards
another person that has a serious effect. Crucially,
it is behaviour the offender knows or ought to
have known would have a serious effect. The new
offence will have links to harassment, stalking and
revenge porn all of them already illegal, as well as
to sexual coercion.
Not One Single Act
Coercive Control is a ‘course of conduct’ offence
whereby it is not defined by one single criminal
48
wELLBEING
act but rather a number of acts occurring
together, forming a pattern. Not all the acts
are, of their own, coercive in nature, the act of
coercive control is specific to the relationship but
identifying it is not as difficult as it sounds, if you
know where to look.
It’s Not About Anger
The important thing to understand with coercive
control is that it is largely invisible and has
very little to do with anger therefore anger
management will have no effect on an abuser
who uses controlling tactics in a relationship.
Anger, quite often, is used as a tactic to
subjugate, meaning that an abuser will ‘rev
himself up’ to project anger in order to intimidate.
The abuse happens so gradually that victims of
coercive control may not even realise they are
being abused.
Low level violence
It is not necessary for abusers to use violence
although some do, the threat of it can be enough
to frighten someone into submission. Low level
violence that doesn’t mark and therefore leaves
no evidence is another tactic. Being pushed into
a wall, grabbed by the hair or wrist, maybe even
by clothing, doors being slammed in the face,
being elbowed, rough sex when angry all feel
threatening and act to undermine and dominate.
I Want You All To Myself
The early signs of coercive control can even look
like devotion. ‘I just want to be with you’, ‘I really
miss you when you see your friends.’ The coercive
controller targets single mothers, the newly
divorced, widows or those undergoing medical
treatment as they are already vulnerable. After,
for example, a divorce, it can be flattering to be
loved so intensely but it is just one of the ways
of isolating the victim from family and friends.
When the controller becomes more established,
he may even forbid his partner’s close friends and
family from coming to the house or he may be
deliberately rude or flirt inappropriately so that
they become uncomfortable and withdraw.
The abuser may not like his partner working or
having interests outside of the relationship. He
may sabotage any attempts at self-improvement
saying ‘Why are you doing this course? You won’t
get any clients. You should be concentrating on
our relationship.’
He may refuse to have any bills in his name
saying ‘ In case something happens to me it’s
better if the bills are in your name.’ and he may
put the heating on full blast or leave all the
lights on knowing you will stress over the bills.
When he does offer to put the bills in his name,
he will avoid paying them, arranging to have
them deferred so the debt piles up without you
knowing.
continued...
Remember
Domestic Abuse
doesn’t always
come in forms
of violence.
OCTOBER 2015 OCTOBER | ISSUE 2015 #36 | | ISSUE HEALTH #36 & WELLBEING
Quite often, a controller will borrow money then
refuse to pay it back or buy something (maybe a
car) that is meant for the family but then register
it as his so, when the relationship breaks down,
you are still left with the bills. The added stress
only serves further to undermine and subjugate.
Monitoring and Blackmail
The abuser will monitor your texts and emails.
It may not even look like monitoring. ‘Here’s my
phone, I have nothing to hide, why can’t I look at
your phone what are you keeping secret?’
‘He changed my password to ‘I love (his name)’
saying that each time I logged on, I would be
reminded of how much I love him.’
He may blackmail his partner with information she
doesn’t want in the public domain, for example
intimate photos.
‘Revenge porn’ is now illegal but he may threaten
to post the images or show his friends in order to
degrade her and further subjugate.
He may threaten to tell everyone she has a mental
illness when she tries to go to the Doctor for
antidepressants so she doesn’t go and becomes
more vulnerable without support.
Disorientation and Gaslighting
Some abusers deliberately wake up their partners
several times during the night so that they
become so exhausted they find it difficult to cope.
They are then easier to manipulate. He may
try and make his partner doubt her own sanity
as in the film ‘Gaslighting’ where a husband
deliberately tried to make his wife think she was
going crazy by turning the light on and off and
then denying it.
Undermining Parenting
Another tactic used by controllers is in reducing
the amount of time a mother spends with her
children.
This can be done by scheduling ‘couple time’
when the children need their mother.
‘He would deliberately keep me in bed when
the alarm went off to stop me from getting the
children their breakfast. If they tried to come into
the bedroom he would scream at them to wait
downstairs.’
Many will threaten the mother with social services
or the police so she ends up fearing the agencies
that are there to protect her.
Health
Living in constant fear and always on eggshells
can cause IBS, palpitations, headaches, difficulties
in eating and sleeping, anxiety, depression and a
complete loss of self-esteem. The abuser knows
this and knows that his partner will find it difficult
to cope so she will end up reliant on him which is
exactly how he wants it. A coercively controlling
relationship has been described as less about
domestic abuse than being in a hostage situation.
Criminalising this could not come sooner.
More in next months issue.
Undiscovered
Food Intolerance?
Now before you turn the page, just as you would walk past the supermarkets freefrom
isle, ask yourself this- When did you last have a headache, feel bloated, or
suffer a random skin itch?
Whenever this was it is most likely you dismissed it
as one of those day to day inconveniences without
a second thought as to why it occurred. Well you
may have been right to put it down to that stomach
bug your mum said she had last week or the stress
from that looming deadline at work, or any other
satisfactory explanation.
However it could actually be that you are part of
the seemingly growing portion of the population
with a food intolerance. Speaking from personal
experience in the discovery of my own food
intolerance, lets spare two minutes to potentially
re-evaluate that reoccurring headache or
mysterious stomach growl of yours.
People tend to simply believe they do not have a
food allergy as they are never severely affected.
This makes sense as the common attitude, but not
having a severe allergy does not mean, you do not
have a mild intolerance.
The most common food intolerances are gluten and
dairy products, but everyone’s body is different
so it could be any food group upsetting you as an
individual. As mentioned earlier symptoms can
include headaches, an upset stomach, general
fatigue and skin rashes, all of which may not occur
instantly after consuming the offending food
product (in contrast to a severe allergic reaction).
Because of this a food intolerance is much harder
to diagnose!
To date, there is no cure for a food intolerance and
the best way to deal with having one is identifying
the offending food and avoiding it as much as
possible within your daily diet. You’re obviously
wondering the best way to identify exactly what it
might be that is upsetting you. You may have heard
of food intolerance tests available, which you can
find even on the high street from companies such
as Holland & Barrett. My research has told me these
are not 100% scientifically reliable but I will say my
own test was rather accurate, and identified two
food groups I struggle with.
When excluding a food group from your diet it
is very important to substitute the vitamins and
nutrition you are no longer getting from this
food. Supermarkets are very supportive of this by
providing their ‘freefrom’ ranges. For example you
can easily replace cow’s milk with goats, sheep,
coconut or rice milk!
In conclusion if you find yourself suffering from
any of the previously listed symptoms on a regular
basis, you could do yourself a real favour by
looking into it a little more.
Remember to do so responsibly, GPs can recommend dieticians to supervise exclusion diets. For more
Your Gut – Your Second Brain
In recent years scientists have discovered that
our gut contains a vast amount of bacteria which
are called the microbiome. The number of genes
in these bacteria is about 3.3 million whilst the
human body has around 23.000. The total weight
of the microbiome is about three pounds – the
same as our brain, which is why it is also called the
Second Brain.
One millilitre of colonic contents contains more
bacteria than there are humans on this planet.
One of the important functions of the microbiome
is to provide immunity (70% of our immune system
is located in the gut), and this starts at birth. The
birth canal is filled with lactobacilli – which prevent
the growth of candida (which causes vaginal
thrush). Lactobacilli are the first thing that enters
the baby’s mouth during birth.
When mothers have C-sections the child does not
get these beneficial lactobacilli. 80% of babies
born via c-section are likely to develop asthma
versus those born naturally, and they are also
55
more likely to develop diarrhoea
in the first year of life, have
a tendency to be allergic to
cow’s milk and have food
intolerances.
Mothers milk also contains lactobacilli. They
help to break down lactose, which is the major
sugar in milk. The first milk also contains a lot of
antibodies for the baby. Later breast milk contains
carbohydrates (sugars) and prebiotics which
provide food for the microbiome. People often
say they have a “gut feeling” and this is true as the
brain is connected to our gut and vice versa.
The gut contains as many nerve cells as the spinal
cord. The microbiome affects not only our nerves
and immune system, but also our endocrine
system. It modulates our emotions, desires and
moods.
The microbiome also produces neurotransmitters.
Imbalances or deficiencies of neurotransmitters
are known to cause, among other things,
behavioural problems in children and psychiatric
problems such as depression.

Timeline
CELEBRATING 3 YEARS
OCTOBER 2012
IN THE BEGINNING...
Bounce Magazine was created to
help local businesses to advertise
affordably in the Bury St Edmunds
area. The publication was designed
and launched by award-winning
businesswoman Rachel Ducker,
after struggling to advertise her
marketing and design agency
‘Apparition’, at a cost that wouldn’t
break the bank. The intention was
to create a friendly and personal
magazine that would focus not
only on the businesses in the area
but also one that impacted the
local community.
FACT
Bounce started off with
32 pages distributing
500 copies, it now
boasts 124 pages (plus)
and has a readership of
over 35,000 offline and
3,000 online.
FEBRUARY 2013 MARCH 2013 JULY 2013
EXPANSION...
As Bounce began to grow so
did its team of local writers. The
distribution increased making the
magazine the only publication
that was available from every
supermarket including Waitrose
home delivery. Branded Bounce
stands where also produced, and
still sit in Glasswells, Debenhams,
Palmers
and the
Halesworth.
ONLINE…
As the magazine continued
to grow so did the audience.
In March 2013 we launched
our online edition, which has
thousands of hits per month.
This also linked through
This month Bounce Magazine were
delighted to be invited along to the
award-winning Valley Connection,
situated in the heart of Bury St
Edmunds on Churchgate Street.
‘Unlike most traditional Indian restaurants, Valley
Connection, also known to the locals as ‘VC’,
pride themselves in offering their customers a
contemporary and relaxed surrounding to dine in.
With a recently refurbished restaurant, full
of atmosphere and character, you can enjoy
award-winning dishes in relaxing and peaceful
surroundings.
The lighting and textures of the dinning room, all
set within a spacious layout, presents a traditional
mood that you can really cosy up in.
Here you can enjoy an up market dining
experience with menus that focus on Indian
continental dishes to Bangladeshi cuisine.
As we arrived at Valley Connection we were
warmly greeted by owner Mr Shahid and his
fabulous team.
After being shown to our elegant table we were
presented with a vast menu of mouth-watering
dishes. Indecisive, we asked for Mr Shahid
to recommend a few dishes to us. Without
hesitation he pointed us in the right direction.
Traditionally starting the meal we ordered an
array of poppadoms with delicious chutneys,
followed by a scrumptious selection of Onion
Bhajis, Prawn Purees and Kebabs.
As for the main event – it was hard to not feel
like royalty. A selection of colourful, spiced food
was placed in front of us, including Salmon Tikka,
Chicken Pordanishi, Haryali Massala to name but
a few!
These speciality dishes are all creations of Valley
Connections owner Mr Abdus Shahid.
After the recent success of his trip to India to take
part in the Taste of Britain Awards, new dishes
have also been added to the extensive menu.
We spoke to a few of the other customers at VC
and here is what they had to say… Andrew states...
“After trying a lot of curry houses
in London we appreciate the fine
quality of the food served here.
Our favourite dishes are the King
Prawn Shalsha and the Sea Bass
Speciality.”
We then spoke to another couple Bob and Shelia,
who come at least once a month and have done
so for the past six years.
“We love the atmosphere and the
very friendly staff. We always have
enjoyable evenings and feel very
welcome every time we come.”
Mr Shahid finally commented “Our main aim when
opening was to create wonderful new signature
dishes. This lead to the success of our awards.”
Culford
BY PADDY BISHOPP
Paddy and Scott’s opened its doors for the first time at Culford
School on Tuesday 8 September, launching a modern and relaxing
café for pupils and parents to visit.
Based in the school’s Sports and Tennis Centre,
the new facility is a partnership between Culford’s
caterers, Edwards and Blake, and the innovative
Suffolk based coffee company that is Paddy and
Scott’s.
Paddy and Scott’s café in Abbeygate Street, Bury
St Edmunds is already a great favourite at Culford
and everyone is delighted to discover that they
can now pick up their favourite coffee at school.
Paddy Bishopp, one of the co-founders of Paddy
and Scott’s said,
“We are so proud of this new
initiative at Culford School. We are
delighted that we can now offer the
Paddy and Scott’s café experience
to all the students, parents and
teachers at Culford”.
Shirley Edwards, Managing Director at Edwards
and Blake, commented,
“This is a great new partnership
between us and we look forward to
serving great coffee and homemade
cakes alongside some healthy treats.
The new café is a lovely place for
people to meet and we are sure
that the members of the Sports and
Tennis Centre will enjoy the new
facility too.”
The modern coffee shop will be used by pupils,
staff and members of the Sports and Tennis Centre
at different times throughout the week. Sixth Form
pupils in particular will be able to use the space
socially as well as to study independently.
Paddy and Scott’s is just one of the new facilities
available to Culford Sixth Formers; Culford’s new
state of the art £2.2m Library also opened this
week providing a stunning, light and airy space
including a mezzanine available for the exclusive
use of Sixth Formers.
And now for
Something
completely
different...
No it’s nothing to do with Monty Python but a
look at some areas that make wine that you may
not be aware of.
It could be surprising to find that there is good
wine being made in countries in the Far East.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
The History of wine tends to be
based on Countries in Europe
and the Middle East. Working its
way from Persia and along the
Mediterranean and then north to
the likes of Germany.
Nowadays we look at good wine coming from
Europe but also further afield to Australia, New
Zealand, USA and South America to name a few.
WHY?
All you need are the right conditions to grow
good quality grapes. This would amount to at
least 1500 hours of sunshine, sufficient water for
the vines to grow, although not too much and
the right soils and microclimate to suit the grape
varieties available. The soils would need to match
the needs of the vine, i.e minerals and trace
elements to produce flavours to match other wine
producing countries.
It is not surprising to find then, that in the
vastness of the Far East there are likely to be
many areas that satisfy these requirements.
For this article we are looking at 4 countries,
India, Thailand, Japan and China.
FOOD & DRINK
INDIA
This Country has a long history of winemaking
going back to the Bronze Age 2500 to 800
BC. It was only in more modern times that it
became more prominent under Portugese and
British colonists. The main wine producing region
is Maharashtra with Mumbai being the main
city. Italian and Californian winemakers are at
work there, producing some really good wines
using classic French and Italian grape varieties.
Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Shiraz,
Cabernets, Chardonnay and Sangiovese are
all used. Previously the grapes were for eating
purposes but since 1997 wine grapes are now
grown and the wines made from these will get
better and better as the vines age.
THAILAND
Vines have been grown here
since1685 being given as a gift by
Louis X1V of France. Despite this
commercial production only started
recently in the 1990’s There are
about 3 regions in Thailand where
cool temperatures help the growing
season, permitting balanced and fruity
wines. The THAI WINE ASSOCIATION was
formed in 2004 in order to establish recognition
as a quality producer. The Monsoon Valley winery
is one of the founders and innovators of the
Thai wine industry and most of their vineyards
are in the Hua Hin Hills. The soils here are loamy
sand and slate and the weather is cooled by the
proximity to oceans. Their vineyard acreage is
about 6 times that of the UK. Not surprisingly
classic French varieties are grown, namely
Colombard, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, the latter
also providing a delightful sweet wine similar to
Vouvray.
JAPAN
At the foot of Mount Fuji the Japanese Koshu
grape is grown. It has been grown here for over
1000 years. It is indigenous to Japan and suits
the volcanic and granitic soils there. Most work
in the vineyards is done by hand leading to high
labour costs. Other methods of training the vines
are now being used, moving from bush training
to trellising, the latter catching more sunlight and
less prone to mildew. The wine is bone dry, light
and crisp with citrus flavours. The style admirably
suits Japanese cuisine. Currently a good producer
coming to the UK is Grace Winery. Although small
in acreage it is still 4 times bigger than Thailand.
CHINA
Wine in China can date back 4600 years
as the Archeologists tell us. However it
was only in the Tang Dynasty 618 to
907 AD that wine drinking became
more common. Much later in
modern times French wines were
imported but this was as late as
1980. By 2000 with the economic
boom in China, the home population
began to buy their own wine, thus
boosting the Wine Industry there. They
are now thinking they can challenge the likes of
France in the quality wine market. As the acreage
of vineyards are now more than France, they
have a good chance of succeeding. Considering
the success of Australian wine, China has 3 times
more vineyards. 80 % of the vineyards are red
and 20% white. The grape varieties are mostly
French, Cabernet and Chardonnay figure highly.
However despite the vast acreage production is
much lower, for example, France produces about
47 million hectolitres while China produces only 11
million hectolitres.
Try a bottle of each...
As I have said before, if you can find them try them side by side
with say a French wine with the same grape variety.
Mauro is back with another fabulous
recipe from ‘Upstairs at Baileys’ in
Beccles.
You will need half-sphere silicon
moulds to shape these beautiful
ravioli. But there’s a twist - instead of
pasta, Mauro uses thin slices of apple
to encase a delicious black pudding
filling.
Serves 4
Ingredients:
100g sugar
100ml water
2 apples
400g black pudding, warmed
200ml double cream
100g Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
Salt and black pepper
Method
1. Mix the sugar and water in a saucepan and
warm until the sugar has melted completely.
Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.
2. Slice the apples thinly (about 2mm) and
immediately dip them into the sugar syrup
to stop them from discolouring.
3. Take the ravioli mould and use half of
the apple slices to line 12 of the hollows. Fill
the moulds with warm black pudding, then
cover them with the remaining apple slices.
Place the moulds in the fridge.
4. Warm the cream in a saucepan over
a medium heat until it starts to boil then
remove from the heat and add the grated
Parmesan. Stir in and season with salt and
pepper to taste.
5. Carefully remove the chilled ravioli from
the moulds and warm them through in the
microwave.
6. Put some of the creamy cheese mixture
on each serving plate and place three ravioli
on top. Decorate with some edible petals,
flowers and micro herbs.
Halloween
Horror
The name “Halloween” is a shorter form for
the Gaelic name All-hallows-evening.
Originally called Samhain, it was a
time when they believed the division
between the worlds of the living and
the dead became very thin and
when ghosts and spirits were
free to wander as they wished...
So here is a ghoulish classic,
originally intended to act as a
hangover cure.
However it’s up to you what story behind the
name you want to believe... Happy Halloween!
• 25ml Martini Rosso vermouth
• Orange peel
2. Add all ingredients to a shaker/metal jug (or
these) with ice
3. Stir until all the ice has melted
Delicious TOFFEE APPLES
Toffee covered apples, on sticks! Perfect for when the evenings get a little chilly!
This month the weather is likely to get a little chillier so we thought it would be a
great time to share our recipe for Toffee Apples. A perfect little treat that may
keep you warm but if not at least take your mind off the fact that summer is
leaving us!
It is best to let a big person do the hot
part of this recipe while us little ones
concentrate on the fun stuff!
So ask your big person to heat the water
over a moderate heat and dissolve the
sugar.
When the toffee is ready it is time to dip
the apples, another fun part!
We will need the big people to bring the
hot toffee over and tell them to not let us
touch the pan, as it’s hot! This way they feel
important.
Carefully dip each apple into the toffee and
twizzle it around so that the toffee covers
the whole apple.
Once the sugar has dissolved the
golden syrup, butter and vinegar can
be stirred into it.
When all of this has been stirred a few
times it needs boiling for about 10 minutes
without stirring.
When this is done a drop should
instantly turn into a ball if dropped into
cold water. Quite a fun test!
Then place each apple onto a greased
tray to let the toffee set. They may need
to go into the fridge. Once they are set, they
are ready to enjoy!
While this is being done we need to
skewer the apples. We need to be a bit
careful here but don’t worry if it gets a bit
tricky.
Basically, place the apples onto a chopping
board and carefully push the wooden sticks
into the centre of them so they look like huge
lollipops!
Autumnal Aches & Pains ...
Suffering with joint and muscular tension is
not uncommon in this day and age.
Ranging from arthritic hands in therapists, chefs and
those working on computers; to rheumatism in hardworn
hands and shoulders of mechanics, builders and
those doing strenuous physical work.
Looking after the body is so important, we only have
one chance to do this right, and it really can be simple
and easy to do. At SK, we have products and treatments
specially created and formulated by Pevonia to
relieve worn, tired and seized joints, and have had the
biological and holistic research to reassure clients.
One of the most effective products is the Aromatic
Moor Mud. This particular mud is founded in Canada
and dates around 40,000 years old – the age of the
mud means it has encapsulated enzymes, vitamins and
minerals, and over time, our skin takes in happily to
replenish dull and sallow tones.
The mud also contains black magma which targets
joint and muscle pain, alleviating any joint or muscle
tension. How you ask? Nearly all of Pevonia products
are designed to fit with the skin’s structure, the particles
within the products are small enough to fit through
the skin’s surface and target the point of concern.
Moor mud can be put onto the skin neat as an intense
treatment or put into the bath as a muscle soak to
alleviate sore muscles and joints. The Aromatic Moor
Mud Tension Relief Wrap at SK; is highly recommend.
For those of you who have visited SK and have had a
body treatment or a relaxing massage, your therapist
would have applied a product called Tension Relief
Gel. It creates a lovely cooling and calming effect on
the area it is applied to relieving any heat or pressure.
Its main ingredients being menthol, camphor oil and
rosemary, mean this product is brilliant for cooling hot
stressed areas. Tension Relief Gel is highly-effective
at easing muscles after a hard workout and fantastic
for use on the temples if you have a headache, the
camphor and menthol work in conjunction to cool and
relieve the area.
One other ingredient you will find within the Pevonia
products and treatments at SK, is Hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a fantastic moisture binder – it is
imperative our skin is kept hydrated as this means it
functions better. Our bodies are made up of 70% water
and a key aspect of Hyaluronic acid is that it can hold
1000 times its weight in water, making it incredibly
moisturising.
Due to the ingredient’s consistency and it being highly
compatible with our skin’s surface, another benefit
to hyaluronic acid is that it
is excellent at keeping joints
lubricated and supple
– very important if
anyone suffers from
conditions like arthritis
or rheumatism.
Stephen John Salon in Lawsons Place,
Moreton Hall Estate, Bury St Edmunds are
celebrating their 10th anniversary this year
and thought they would mark the occasion
by releasing their very own calendar for
calendar will help to raise funds for the West
Suffolk Hospitals MacMillan Unit.
In 2012 Stephen John launched a new Hair
of personal needs, but also working very
closely with the Macmillan Unit within the
Hospital, helping thier Cancer patients who
have suffered dramatic hair loss due to
their treatment. The new hair collection are
available in all colours & styles, suiting all
tastes, and helps the ladies feel good about
themselves whilst going through this very
traumatic experience, this touched the salon
into doing something good to support the
charity, hence, coming up with the idea
of a charity calendar for customers to
purchase.
100% of the money raised will go to the
charity.
The Calendar will be displaying their new
October
The autumn chill sets in
By Kate Lines
Kates Top Tip : It’s your last chance to trim
deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy
over the winter
Now that autumn has arrived, grass
grows much slower so there’s no
need to cut your lawn.
If however it is mild and you need to mow,
change your mower to a higher cut. The lawn
is particularly susceptible to the damage of the
larvae of the daddy longlegs at this time of the
year, they eat the roots of the grass. Use a leather
jacket killer to prevent extensive damage.
Planting
October is an excellent time to plant trees, shrubs
and perennials, the soil is warm enough to give
them a good start before winter begins. It is also a
good time to divide perennials that have become
too large. Lift the plant without damaging the roots
and pull the young parts away from the old plant.
They can then be replanted. Plant winter flowering
plants in the border such as ornamental cabbage or
pansies. Bulbs can also be planted in borders or pots.
Indoors
You can have flowering plants as early as December
if you plant tulips or hyacinths so that the tops are
level with the soil. Crocus need to be planted a few
centimeters deeper and narcissi should protrude
slightly above the soil. Place the bowls or pots in the
cool (12deg) for about 8 weeks.
Copeland Interiors
By Clare Hindle
I say it every year but it’s true,
I love this time of year in the
interiors industry! Now is the
time when all our suppliers and
designers bring out their new
collections whether it be fabrics,
wallpapers, paint or furniture
there is an air of anticipation and
excitement to see what is going to be
on trend through autumn to spring
next year.
It all starts with the annual Chelsea Harbour
Focus Exhibition and Decorex at Syon Park, we
are always so excited to go and although we
have seen leaflets and photos it always great to
actually see everything in the flesh!
Also GP&J Baker have an amazing
collection called ‘Cosmopolitan,’ which
goes back into their archives and strikes a
great balance between some of their classics and stunning new designs.
Designers Guild once again have wowed us with their exquisite designs that are so beautiful
they really are works of art, colour combinations of cerise, plum , limes and blues are all subtly
put together.
Sanderson have looked to the spirit of Bohemia and their new collection is inspired by a love of
global textiles, it is a very vibrant collection and shows well the trend for mixing pattern.
Following on from their massive success
of their grey paint range Little Green
have followed trend and have launched
a blue paint range there really are some
amazing shades of various blues that would
compliment many different rooms.
So all in all there is a lot to be enthused
about which hopefully will inspire all our
customers!
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2015 | ISS 2015 UE | #36 ISSUE | SPORT #36
SPORT
Birmingham are this season much improved and
much tougher to beat but I was still confident
walking into Portman Road for a rare Friday night
lights experience.
Selection posers for Mick
at both ends of the pitch...
It is footballing common
knowledge that if you win the
majority of home games and at
least draw the majority of away
games, you will have a very
successful season.
I write this after Ipswich
turned this belief on its
head – by picking up a very
pleasing and necessary win
on the road at Leeds but
unable to beat a resolute
Birmingham at Portman
Road three days later.
The victory at Elland Road
was much needed to stop
the rot – or should that be rotten – which Sky
Sports screened against Reading.
I can remember Ipswich being horrendously
outplayed by Crystal Palace and Leicester
when Mick McCarthy first inherited Paul
Jewell’s mess but, on almost the manager’s
third anniversary at the IP1 helm, this came
close.
McCarthy reassured us that it was just a bad
day at the office, that his men were made of
the right stuff and would bounce back.
He was right – as he is about most things –
after a 1-0 victory at Leeds that was more
comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
One point should have been three after a hotlydisputed
penalty by the impressive Brett Pitman
should have been added to by the even more
impressive Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Daryl Murphy.
Last season’s Championship top scorer has yet
to hit top form. At his peak in the last campaign,
everything Murphy touched turned to goals.
Netting for the first time this season could change
everything but Murphy is in danger of going from
the golden man to not even on the podium with
Freddie Sears, Pitman and the fit-again David
McGoldrick all impressing ahead
of him.
It is a nice problem for McCarthy
to have but he mustn’t be tempted
to shoehorn them all in or meddle
with his starting line-up just to
keep everyone happy.
Elsewhere, Town do look rickety at
the back – they always seem smart
money for a ‘both teams to score’
bet if you are of the persuasion.
I’d love to see Jonny Parr given an
extended run at the back, but it should be at rightback
with Jonas Knudsen settling into the rigours of
Championship football so quickly.
That would leave the tough choice of picking two
from Luke Chambers, Christophe Berra and Tommy
Smith. Again, it’s a nice problem to have.
Well Sir Ranulph Riennes has
nothing to fear as my somewhat
diminutive frame is not really
built for mountain climbing
but that didn’t stop me from
taking on my toughest challenge
to date with the national 3
peaks challenge.
This monumental feat entails climbing the largest
mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis) England
(Scaffel Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) back to back.
This is a challenge that I’ve wanted to do for some
time and during my new baby daughter Everly’s
2 week stay on the neo-natal intensive care unit
at Ipswich Hospital I noticed the Ipswich Hospital
Charity posters and their new Sunrise Appeal to
raise £100,000 for the unit and paediatric care,
well there’s no greater incentive than that. This
is a challenge that I’ve wanted to do for some
Having never even set foot on a mountain
previously I did clock quite a few miles of training
but the rather flat Suffolk landscape didn’t really
prepare me for what was to come.
Action Man and his army comprising of Aaron,
Rob, Stephen, George, Dean, Jack, Darren,
Michael, Isla, Matt and Bren began the journey
up to Fort William and our camp site at the base
of Ben Nevis. Half way we picked up our minibus
from www.busybus.co.uk driven by Frank, who
knew the roads like the back of his hand and gave
us some much needed time to rest in between
mountains.
A very early start on a Saturday morning saw us
quickly gather all our equipment, break down the
camp and porridge up to the eyeballs ready for
our first climb.
A little after 6 o’clock we were underway, 1344
metres up was Britain’s highest point, quite steep
to start with the path rose through the valley
then proceed to zig-zag up the mountain, three
hours later we reached the summit, the almost
luna surroundings were far surpassed by the far
reaching views of the Scottish highlands but
there was no time to waste, just long enough to
scoff an protein bar, take a selfie then get out
of the bitter sub-zero winds and back down the
mountain, this took two and a half hours, you’d
think it would be quicker but it’s very hard on the
legs and caught a few by surprise.
Back on the bus for a carb loading lunch and
some rest whilst we drove five hours South to
Scaffel Pike. Straight off the bus and straight up
the mountain just in time to watch the sunset
over the Lake District but that left coming down
rather tricky with just the narrow light of our head
torches piercing the darkness.
After another few hours of broken sleep on the
bus we reached Snowdon in North Wales, taking
the longer but easier minors path on the way
up (however this is still very tricky towards the
top) we reached the peak in two hours, our third
summit within 24hrs was greeted by a wave
of exhaustion, elation, relief and joy only to be
disheartened to discover the summit café (to
which there is actually a train!) wouldn’t open for
another two hours.
So back we went this time down the shorter but
more challenging Pyg trail with just enough in
the legs to finish with a sprint finish. In total we
walked 30 miles, 67,000 steps and the equivalent
of 783 stories high! This amazing challenge was
a monstrous physical and mental challenge but
great fun was had by all along the way and most
importantly we raised almost £7000 for the
Sunrise Appeal.
Fitness advice from
Abbeycroft Leisure...
Bring a friend: Working out with
someone else is a great motivator. Not
only is there an element of friendly
competition, but there’s also now
someone who you don’t want to let
down. Unfortunately, we let ourselves
down all the time and make excuses
for
Set achievable goals: Don’t set
yourself up to fail. By giving yourself
unachievable targets, you
may lose the drive and
will you need to reach
why we can’t do things; but we’re
more committed to our friends.
Pack your bag: A simple one,
but effective. Pack your back for
exercise the night before. That way,
you’re ready to roll out of bed and
get moving, or
grab the bag after
work. Keep the
momentum going
and don’t let having
to get everything
together when bed
is more comfortable
be an option!
Track your progress:
Make a check list and tick
off your progress. If you
have visible evidence of
your exercise, you’ll be
more inclined to keep
moving forward. Any days
you don’t exercise or train,
mark with a big red
X – after seeing a
few of those, you’ll
want to get back
out there!
Can anyone stop
LEWIS HAMILTON?
Can anyone stop Lewis Hamilton’s
charge towards the 2015 Formula
1 World Championship? This is the
question on both media and fellow
driver’s lips.
This season unlike last, has seen Lewis
get stronger throughout the middle
stages.
Even in Hungary when it looked like
he would drop points to Nico Rosbery
(his main challenger) it was Nico who
then suffered late on in the race to drop
behind Lewis and thus he extended his
lead even when no one had thought he
would do.
The Italian Grand Prix was really where
Lewis shone and made his biggest title
move.
Having dominated every single practice
session, Lewis went and put his car on
Pole Position. What made this even
better for him was that Kimi Raikkonen
then went and put his car 2nd on the
grid.
Thus Lewis now had an even larger gap
than usual to his team mate. Kimi’s start
at the Italian Grand Prix was however
awful. His car bogged down on the
line and by the end of the start/finish
straight he was stone cold last.
This meant Lewis would potentially have
to fight even harder to keep his team
mate behind him.
This however was not an issue. Nico also
went backwards at the start of the race
and he struggled to get past the cars in
front of him.
Lewis meanwhile was cruising into the
lead of the race. Everything was looking
great for Lewis...that was until near the
end a radio call came in from his Race
Engineer.
This radio call was very strange as it told
him he really needed to push to the end
of the race – even though Lewis was 21
seconds clear of 2nd place.
Lewis Hamilton’s win in Italy was very
good and usually would have been a
good result having beaten his team mate.
What made it a great result however
was that Nico Rosberg’s engine blew up
in flames whilst he was chasing down
Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari 6 laps from
the end.
This rare failure of the Mercedes engine
now means that Lewis Hamilton has a
53 point lead in the Championship race.
This means he can fail to finish twice and
still be in
the lead.
With 7 races remaining (including the
Singapore Grand Prix this weekend
as of writing this) there are still 200
points available which means the title is
nowhere near won.
It does however mean Lewis Hamilton
is in a great position to do what he did
not manage to do in 2009 when he was
the reigning World Champion...that is to
defend his World Championship.
Keep watching live from the weekend
of 18th September to see what happens
next.
It later turned out that there was a tyre
pressure problem which was flagged by
one of the stewards and after 4 hours
of deliberating with Mercedes and Pirelli
(the tyre supplier) following the race
finish, the race result stood.
Royal
By Nicki Dixon
This autumn at the Theatre Royal is
full of performances to tempt you out
on the darker evenings.
William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is
brought to the stage from 6 to 10 October
courtesy of Northern Broadsides and is a
rich tale of romance, jealousy, love and
redemption.
King Leontes falsely accuses his Queen of infidelity
with his closest friend and condemns the newborn
to death. But the child, Perdita, survives and what
follows is a beautiful and beguiling love story where
the cold hand of winter gives way to the vibrancy
of spring.
In a new production of the iconic film, It’s A
Wonderful Life, this production is told as a radio
play (21 October), complete with sound effects live
on stage. This loving tribute to the golden era of
the wireless is a fresh take on a heart-warming and
timely classic loved by all.
Following this Up In Arms return to Bury with
Eventide (22 to 24 October) which tells the story of
three people whose worlds are disappearing.
Their tales unfold in the heart of the Hampshire
countryside but
is that heart still
beating? And
for younger
theatregoers we
have the colourful
and fun story of Marty Mcdonald’s Farm, a brilliant
way to kick off the half term week on 25 October.
Cbeebies Justin Fletcher is the voice of Pongo
the Pig in this adventure featuring songs, fun and
laughter! (please note Justin does into appear in
person).
And rounding off the month, and just in time for
Halloween, Middle Ground Theatre Company spook
and scare with a double bill featuring Jack Shephard
(Wycliffe) from 27 to 31 October.
Charles Dickens’ The Signalman is an unnerving tale
of a tormented signalman haunted by visions of
impending disaster.
The second play in the double bill is The Waiting
Room and this will be its world stage premiere
– telling the tale of a man who has missed his
connection and is forced to spend the night alone in
an old station waiting room. A perfect way to spend
a dark autumn evening!
Music
Oh, hi. I’m the new kid – let’s
cut straight to the chase and
document some of our region’s
new music.
White Fright are the reincarnation of the
formerly-named garage trio King Blood - the
band, who recently completed a short tour
of the region and London, made a sweaty
hometown return to the Rehearsal Rooms in
Bury St Edmunds.
Aaron Powell, lead vocalist / guitarist,
updated me on their time in Falmouth
recording the new record, which is due out
next year:
“The new sound is a massive movement…
King Blood was a band that allowed us to
explore what we wanted to be, but White
Fright have a very definitive direction that
we’re heading in.”
Further up East, in the depths of Norfolk’s
dense woodland, comes a captivating (yet
White Fright
equally haunting) birdsong from Phoebe
Robinson. The indie-folk songstress has
received previous BBC6 Music airtime with
her debut EP ‘For Now’ - a self-released,
handmade record that had a limited batch.
It’s still available for streaming on Soundcloud,
too, so be sure to indulge.
Combining the fragile narrative style of
Vashti Bunyan with modern tech, she’s been
venturing into electronic territory as of late,
most recently at a headline show in Norwich
with homemade film projections across the
stage.
A true artist in multiple formats, one to keep
an ear out for - She’s currently working on
new material whilst studying at Goldsmiths
University.
See you next month - Jack
Adventures
MY ROAD TRIP…
Been a bloomin’ good month for me,
I went on a UK road trip adventure.
I was super excited as we set off from home… me…
I was on the back seat, nice and safe in my little red
harness. After what felt like a lifetime of driving the
car stopped. Yes! Day one was a night in a Cabin, I
made myself right at home of course, but little did I
know this was just a stop over and we weren’t there
for long.
Day two and in the bloomin’ car again… as we pass a
massive stone circle I wondered where we were off
too? We travelled further and further and the roads
became narrower.
Suddenly a loud bang and a funny feeling takes over
the car. I am lifted up out of the machine and tied to
a gate in the field only to see the tire flat, uff and I
meet flat! I’m amazed that a spare is fixed so quickly
and we’re on the road again. This time when we get
to our destination I see my Aunty Anna and Uncle
Dan… we’re in Devon… Kingsbridge to be exact!
After two days of walkies and sightseeing… yep,
we’re back in that car again!
This time we end up in Cornwall… surrounded by
boats and lots and lots of rain! After another few
days here and more walks and not forgetting chips
from the pubs we visit… yep… car time.
After a brief stop in Glastonbury, a visit to a witches
shop and a trip to the Tor we set up camp in a Bell
tent near Salisbury. Got to say bloomin’ cold in a tent
this time of year so I made sure I was nestled in the
middle of the bed. The next day we visit Avebury
and have a bowl of water in the most haunted pub
in England, scary stuff, I felt my fur stand on end at
one point.
I was tremendously happy to be taken on this
holiday, huff I usually get left at home. It has to be
said sometimes the UK ones are the best ones.
