www.reidsdairy.com • Belleville / Kingston The Kingston Frontenacs had one of the best opening first-half’s in team history. The 21 wins, 10 losses, 2 overtime losses, and 1 shootout loss for 45 points sent a clear signal to teams in the Eastern Conference: the Frontenacs are the real deal! While the loss to Ottawa on Tuesday to open the second half of the season wasn’t the way the Frontenacs hoped to start the second chapter of the regular season, it was the same way they opened the first half, with a loss to Barrie in the season opener. We caught up with Head Coach Paul McFarland after practice earlier this week at Rogers K-Rock Centre. GameDay: At the midway point of the season, looking back, how do you rate the first half? PAUL MCFARLAND: It’s been solid. We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish to this point, but it’s still really early in the season and there is still a lot of work to be done, and we still have to get way better than we are today. For us, we’re excited with the start we had in the first half, but we know there is lots of work ahead. GameDay: Is this where you thought you’d be after 34 games? PAUL MCFARLAND: I don’t know. I think you look longterm, to be honest. We try to break everything into small segments and take it 5 or 6 games at a time. For us, that’s all we ever do. Keep looking at those small segments and see how we do in different areas of that segments, stats-wise we look at, and we try to meet our objectives every time and if we are able to (meet those objectives), we have success. GameDay: With first place in the Eastern Conference, what’s your focus for the second half? paul mcfarland: We have to make sure we don’t look too far ahead. It’s easy to watch the standings, and look at the numbers every day, but really, at the end of the day, you just have to worry about taking care of what we can control and that’s playing our best hockey each and every night. We have a few games before we get a full bench with guys out with injuries and World Juniors, so that’s really our focus, those few games. GameDay: What areas can the team improve on, and who do you look to on the ice to lead the way? paul mcfarland: For us, as a group, we have to continue to improve in all areas. I don’t think there’s one area in particular. Offensively, we can always generate more (scoring) chances and defensively we can give up less. Our specialty teams have been pretty good for the most part this first half, but there’s always room to grow. For us, as individuals, you want the players to take step in their game. I think a lot of our guys have had good first halves of the season and surprised us in some ways. But in the second-half, the league picks up–it’s bigger faster–so we have to make sure we can do that as a group. KF 30 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE
