In Memory of Jerry Tucker
As many of you know, Jerry Tucker passed away on December 15. Our thoughts and
prayers are with Nanette and the Tucker family at this time. Jerry & Nanette were the
2015 Presidents of H.S.R.D.C. and were slated to be President for 2016.
Jerry was a generous, fun-loving man who wanted everyone to have a good time. I’ve
heard him referred to as a “gentle giant.” His obituary and more photos are on the web at

Jerry Wayne Tucker, son of Harmon & Maudie Tucker, was born at home on November
26, 1941 and died on December 15, 2015. Jerry grew up on Houston’s East side graduating
from Milby High School and went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University
with a degree in Education. While at SHSU, he met the love of his life, Nanette. They
were married the summer before their senior year. After graduation, Jerry began his
career as a teacher. Not really liking this adventure he tried several jobs in the business
world finally finding his niche as a salesman working for his father-in-law, who owned his
own business. When “Dad” retired, Jerry took over the business and eventually ended his
career when he closed the shop. Retiring did not agree with him so he took a part-time
job with East Fort Bend Ministry, working with Nanette. He went on to work part-time
for Home Depot and then U-Haul. He loved working at U-Haul because of the camaraderie
with those he worked with.
His love of square dancing began through the prodding and teasing of Wes and Barbara
Henderson. On the very first fun night, Jerry signed them up for lessons and the
rest is history. He began as a student and later became President of the Fairbees and on
to President of the HSRDC. He was also President of Camping Squares and Texas State
Camping Squares. While enjoying this activity he loved, he made many, many friends
along the way.
He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey. He is survived by the “love of his life”
Nanette, son Chris (Alicia), daughter-in-law Jennifer, brother Harmon Ray Tucker (Haroldene),
sisters Jean King (Harry), and Wanda Roberts (Marvin), and Betty Singleton (Kelvin),
grandchildren Michael, Sarah, Jacob and Jason, mother-in-law, Dorothy Smith, sisterin-law
Sharon Fischer, many nieces and nephews and the many friends and neighbors he
met along his journey in life.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday January 6, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany
Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer, Houston 77098. In lieu of flowers, please consider
making a donation to East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, PO Box 1611, Stafford, TX
77497.

Dearest friends,
The world is full of wonderful, kind, happy people but there is one
less today. We have had many friends who square dance over the
years but we were to “busy” to learn and Jerry did not think he could
dance. It took a very persistent couple to finally persuade him to just
try.
It took one fun night to change his mind. He signed us up for lessons that night and told
me on the way home. He did not need to ask me-he knew I loved to dance even if it was by
myself or with the grandchildren. He said it was for me but I knew he was excited too. That
was 15 years ago. He has been working very hard to help keep our favorite past time alive
and thriving. He loved all of you. The smiles on his face were real. If he insisted on you getting
up to dance and make another square it was because he knew you could do it or you
could rest later. I have missed getting to dance with all of you the last two years but you were
always kind and welcoming when I was able to come. I am being told that life goes on and I
feel like with all the love and support I am receiving from my family, you and our God at this
difficult time I will. Know that I am grateful for the many cards and calls. I love all of you. I
will see you all as soon as I am able.

Memories of Jerry
When I think of Jerry, I think of a big presence,
teddy bear heart, full of life, passionate about
square dancing and someone who loved his family
and friends. When John & I took square dance lessons
in 2004 with BBB&B, we visited the Fairbees
a lot, because Jerry & Nanette Tucker and Vernon
& Ann Wells took us under their wings and made
sure they helped us progress in our dancing. I will
never forget their kindness :) Jerry will be missed
SO much. Our prayers, thoughts and love are with
Nanette and her family.

Our fondest memory of Jerry is
that he was always a thoughtful,
kind and very giving person. Even if
he had to talk us into being on the
HSRDC board, we thoroughly enjoy
working with Jerry and Nanette.

Jerry and Nanette have been sweet friends for
a long time. Nanette is always there whenever I
need something at a dance event, which is always
comforting. Jerry has always offered help, also,
was constantly complimenting and thanking me for
all that I have done for Council and my Clubs. He
also razzed me about all kinds of things. Jerry was
that way with all his and Nanette’s friends. If he
didn’t do all that teasing, we wouldn’t know what
to think or do. My love and support for Nanette
is ongoing. I will also continue to be supportive of
her!!! When I called to ask her if Jerry would be
able to walk with me in the style show, she didn’t
hesitate to say that he would like to do that, he
was so sweet by calling me back to ask for colors to
wear. I think he had fun doing all that, but he really
was not feeling all that great!!! My non dancing
FB friends have sent sweet comments from
other areas and states. He leaves a huge void in our
Houston Square/Round Dance community. He was
a well loved and loving man .

The Square Dance World has lost one of the good
ones. Jerry Tucker will live on in our memories. He
could be seen at many a dance, always sporting a
cowboy hat and looking for the pie. He always had a
smile on his face and he made us laugh. He always lent
a helping hand to the clubs and anyone else in need.
Even when his knees would not let him dance, he
would still come by the clubs to show his support for
them and buy coffee kitty tickets.
Jerry was known throughout the state of Texas for
his folksy manner and for his dedication to square
dancing. Along with Nanette, his wife of 50+ years,
he served the square dance community in many ways.
They spent two terms as President of HSRDC and as
President of Texas State Camping Squares. They also were President of the Fair Bees and
Houston Area Camping Squares in earlier times.
Jerry Tucker’s legacy will forever be part of Square Dancing in Houston and all of Texas.
We will miss you Jerry.

At each quarterly council meeting a blue visitation card will be drawn for
each month succeeding the previous council meeting.
The HSRDC dancer who submitted that card to the Friendship Director will
receive a $ 50.00 gift card with the following provision:
To be eligible to receive the gift card incentive the club designated by the
dancer as his “ CLUB “, must have at least one club designated official
present at the council meeting. The club representative MAY NOT BE
THE DANCER OR ANY HSRDC OFFICER, ELECTED OR APPOINTED
This is designed to elicit visitations to club dances and events and also to
stimulate attendance at council meetings.
Only visitations where the suggested donation was remitted may be listed on
the visitation card to be eligible for the reward.
The twenty different visitations to submit a card is suspended.

What is happening in your clubs?
Strawberry Squares will have two fun nights, January 4 and 11. Classes will begin on January 18.
Round up your friends and have them come out for some fun.
Bluebonnet Squares will be hosting the class’s HALFWAY Dance, Monday, January 18th. The caller
will be the club’s caller, Paul Cote. Paul will also be calling all the Club dances throughout the month. If
you are needing to refresh your skills come and join in the fun. Lessons are held Tuesday evenings at the
Spring Woods Methodist Church, 1711 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77090. Any Square Dancers
are welcome to join the club on Mondays at the same location from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm for Plus and Mainstream

Fairbees club invites all Visitors to square dance FREE at the Fairbees the whole month of January! Happy New
Year! Fairbees will have fun nights in January. Look for their ads and invite your friends to take lessons.
Strawberry Squares and Tomball Promenaders also have fun nights and lessons starting this month. This is
the time of year when people talk about exercise and what could be a more fun way to exercise than square dancing.
Brazos Bottom Belles & Beaus will have their annual “Soup-er Bowl” special on January 19. Come enjoy a
soup dinner and be sure to wear your favorite team jersey.
The Alvin Country Squares enjoyed a special “Waiting for Santa” dance on December 10th. We donned our pajamas,
robes, slippers, and even kerchiefs, and enjoyed milk, cookies, hot cocoa, and other goodies while we danced
and waited for Santa. He finally arrived in all his splendor, and spent the evening visiting and posing for photos
with the dancers. Gary Sanders kept us dancing up a storm to wonderful Christmas music. Two stuffed teddy bears
volunteered to be door prizes, and went to new homes at the end of the dance. We had a drawing for a weekend getaway
at the Marriot in Pearland, which was won by Marjorie Jacobs of the Lake Jackson Promenaders. We even had
a “reindeer”! We’d like to thank everyone who came out and waited for Santa with us. Everyone got into the spirit
of the evening and it was a great success! We thank Bill Lewis for the wonderful photos of the dance that he posted
on his website, and we hope everyone will take a minute to look at them. * * * We hope to see you all at our first
dance of the new year on January 7th. We will start the new year out right with a dinner of blackeyed peas, greens
and cabbage, and cornbread. Then we will dance the night away to OLDIES called by none other than our own Gary
Sanders! Dinner will be served at 6:00 and the dance will begin at 7:00. Happy New Year, everyone! * * *
