Spirulina Gelpells ®
Spirulina
Spirulina are microscopic blueish-green algae in the shape of a perfect
spiral coil, living both in sea and fresh water. For food and feed
supplements primarily the two species of cyanobacteria are being
used: Arthrospira platensis, and Arthrospira maxima. These and
other Arthrospira species were once classified in the genus
Spirulina.
Spirulina contains a lot of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and
fatty acids. Spirulina specifically contains Phycocyanin (blue) and
Chlorophyllin (green) in high amounts. Both ingredients might be
responsible for the benefits of Spirulina.
Benefits of Spirulina supplementation
- A study in 2005 found that Spirulina protects against hay fever. [1] .
- A double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 2008 with 150 allergic
rhinitis patients found that Spirulina platensis significantly reduced
the secretion of pro-inflammatory interleukin-4 by 32% and the patients
experienced symptomatic relief. [2]
- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with geriatric
patients showed that Spirulina reduces significantly the ratio of low
to high density lipoprotein after four months of supplementation. [.3]
- Furthermore, Spirulina was found to reduce the inflammation involved
in arthritis in geriatric patients by stimulating the secretion of
interleukin-2, which helps in regulating the inflammatory response. [3]
- Spirulina improved the antioxidant potential of geriatric patients after
supplementation for 16 weeks. The plasma of these patients
showed an increased level of total antioxidants. [3]
-A 2007 study found that 36 volunteers taking 4.5 grams of Spirulina
per day over a six week period, lowered total cholesterol and
triglycerides; increased HDL; and lowered systolic and diastolic
blood pressure. [4]
- A double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 2006 found that
Spirulina supplementation decreased the amount of creatine kinase,
an indicator of muscular breakdown after exercise. Furthermore, the
time to exhaustion during all out treadmill exercise increased by 52
seconds. These effects were thought to be due to Spirulina's antioxidant
potential. [5]
Spirulina Gelpells
Phycocyanibilin
causes the blue color of Spirulina.
It is bound to Cystein in the backbone
of Phycocaynin
Chlorophyll
responsible for the green color of
Spirulina
Easy and clean filling
Spirulina as a raw material is a very fine and dusty green powder. It is quite difficult to fill it into capsules
or to press tablets. Finished Spirulina products often are forming dust and have a fishy smell.
Spirulina Gelpells however can be filled clean easily and without dust formation into capsules of the
sizes 2, 1, 0, 00 and 000 as well as into sticks or sachets. The smell is reduced and the pellets still
can be flavoured for direct consumption
