From the Manager
A Year of Strategic Change
In 2015, Winnipeg Public Library unveiled a five-year strategic plan designed to guide
us in our decision-making until 2020. This year will see our library system embark on a
series of changes that will reflect what we heard from the community. These changes are
similar to those in public libraries elsewhere in Canada and the world.
ON THE COVER
City Councillor of the Point
Douglas Ward Mike Pagtakhan,
his wife Minas, and their children
show off the new early literacy
themed library cards, available
starting February 6.
Our focus on early literacy will be celebrated on February 6 with Take Your Child to the
Library Day – a day with fun activities emphasizing the value of libraries in the lives of
young children. In addition, we will explore new ways to connect with schools with a
goal of a library card in the hands of as many students as possible.
We will start work on the creation of a makerspace lab at the Millennium Library.
This DIY space will be for people to create, invent, and learn together through digital
technology, crafts and more. Programming will continue to be a high priority, including
new programs for seniors on using our eLibrary.
Construction on a new Windsor Park Library and Transcona Library are slated for
2016. Renovations to St. John’s, Cornish, and St. Vital libraries will also get underway
in 2016, helping to rejuvenate our system and update these important community hubs.
There is much work to be done in 2016, but we are excited by the changes and are
confident about where we are heading.
Take Your Child to
the Library Day
Celebrate reading, literacy and lifelong
learning at your library on February 6
for Take Your Child to the Library Day.
We’ve lined up fun family learning
activities and programs all day long at
all 20 branches.
On February 6, you can swap out your
“old” library card for this new early
literacy themed design – for free – at
all branches. The card features the 5
practices – talk, sing, read, write, play –
that are key to developing early
literacy skills.
Don’t forget to then stop off at our
“photo booths” with your new card,
use our props provided, and share your
photo online. See page 21 for all
the details!
Waste Ace
The Call2Recycle Battle for Batteries
(October 19-25, 2015) resulted in over
2,000 kg of waste being diverted from
the landfill. West Kildonan Library
was crowned the winner, with 250 kg
collected in just that one week. Batteries
(weighing up to 5kg) and used cell
phones can be dropped off year-round at
all 20 branches. Look for the Call2Recycle
box, use the supplied bags, and drop
them in.
Thank you!
Robertson
Our Writer-in-Residence presents
workshops to spark your creativity and
hone your skills. All require registration;
The Seed of the Story
Where do stories come from? How do I
know I even have a story? For those of
you who’ve wondered, this workshop
will enhance your awareness of story
possibilities and the creative process.
Through short readings and writing
exercises, you’ll learn how to generate
story seeds and how a story evolves.
Beginning the Prose Narrative
In the beginning… the writer sets up a
contract with the reader, and the reader
decides whether to go along for the
ride. How do you know where to begin?
What makes a beginning that will grab
the reader and not let go? Whether
you’re writing a short story, a novel, or a
memoir, this workshop is for you. We’ll
look at sample published openings, and
write one or two ourselves.
Check out some great stories about the joy of reading from our new book
list, I Love My Library!, to be released on February 6. Here’s a few to get
you started:
A LIBRARY BOOK FOR BEAR
by Bonny Becker
When Bear reluctantly agrees to go with his friend to the big
library, neither rocket ships nor wooden canoes are enough for
Bear’s picky tastes. How will Mouse ever find the perfect book
for Bear?
LIBRARY MOUSE
by Daniel Kirk
Sam, a shy mouse who lives in the library, writes his own books
and places them on the shelves with all the books. When the
children read his stories, they all want to meet the author!
READING MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD
by Todd Parr
The author highlights some of the advantages of reading, such
as learning to make pizza or finding your favourite animal at
the zoo.
Early experiences with books and language lay the foundation for success in learning
to read. You can help build reading readiness. Talk, sing, read, write and play with
your child - all of these activities help to develop language and literacy skills.
It’s not too late to sign up
