Carp Management in Spring Lake & Prior Lake – 2015<br />

Sponsor: Prior Lake - Spring Lake <strong>Watershed</strong> District<br />

Funding: Clean Water Partnership (Grant) $67,323<br />

Purpose: Capture and surgically implant 30 adult carp<br />

throughout three lakes with high frequency radio<br />

transmitters. In addition to radio tagging, all remaining<br />

carp will be marked with a fin clip and returned to the<br />

lake to allow us to complete a mark/recapture population<br />

estimate. Radio tagged carp will be tracked to determine<br />

if migration routes exist, and if so, where barriers may<br />

be sited to restrict carp from potential nursery sites<br />

and spawning habitat, as well as to identify potential<br />

aggregation areas. Once a significant aggregation of carp<br />

has been located, a removal will be completed. During<br />

the removal, a count of the recaptured carp will be<br />

completed to generate a population estimate, combining<br />

the information with a weight and length subsample to<br />

obtain a biomass estimate. This value can then be used<br />

to gauge if additional removals are warranted on the<br />

lakes. By quantifying the amount of carp that are present<br />

post-removal, a total phosphorus load reduction can be<br />

estimated and compared to the amount specified in the<br />

2012 TMDL for Spring and Upper Prior Lakes. Spring/<br />

Summer spawning tracking data will inform decisions on<br />

where we may be able to site carp barriers as part of our<br />

integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to inhibit carp<br />

recruitment. Barriers will be placed in identified locations<br />

after sufficient spawning period data has been collected.<br />

Carp will be tracked post barrier installation in 2017 to<br />

determine the effectiveness of the barriers and allow us to<br />

determine if any modifications may be necessary.<br />

Credit River Protection Plan – 2013<br />

Sponsor: Scott <strong>Watershed</strong> Management Organization<br />

Funding: CWP (Grant) $225, 000<br />

Purpose: This project will promote land and water<br />

treatment practices, including wetland restoration,<br />

riparian vegetation management, geomorphic (stream<br />

stabilization and grade control), livestock exclusion,<br />

native grasses, and rain gardens. Also included are three<br />

specific geomorphic (stream/grade) stabilization projects<br />

in the Hidden Hills Park area of Savage, a wetland<br />

restoration in Savage, and finishing the Ponds Park Storm<br />

Water Reuse Project. The project includes a 0.25 full<br />

time equivalent (FTE) to provide the technical assistance<br />

necessary to implement the practices. Metrics or targets<br />

for this objective include: installation of 30 rain gardens,<br />

70 acres of natural practices (i.e., wetland restoration,<br />

native grass or riparian vegetation management),<br />

the completion of 3-4 geomorphic practices (stream<br />

stabilization or grade control), and 1 storm water reuse<br />

project. The bulk of the education/outreach effort, will<br />

develop and implement a program targeting small hobby<br />

farm and other large-lot residential land owners, to<br />

include both broad-based and individual (e.g. door-todoor)<br />

marketing and outreach components. A 0.25 FTE<br />

position is included in the budget for this effort.<br />

High Island Creek – McLeod County SSTS Project – 2013<br />

Sponsor: McLeod County<br />

Funding: CWP (Loan) $120,000<br />

Purpose: This project will work to address non-compliant<br />

SST systems in McLeod County’s portion of the High<br />

Island Creek <strong>Watershed</strong> through the allocation of loan<br />

funds to rural homeowners. Overall, this specific project<br />

strives to implement 3 SSTS upgrades per year for the<br />

next 3 years.<br />

High Island Creek TMDL Project for Fecal Coliform – 2011<br />

Sponsor: Sibley County<br />

Funding: Section 319 (Grant) $300,000<br />

Purpose: Results from the Agricultural Drainage and<br />

Pesticide Transport model by the University of Minnesota<br />

(Dr. David Mulla), shows that the Lower Minnesota River<br />

watershed contributes a large percentage of the sediment<br />

and nutrients that enter into the Mississippi River.<br />

The desired environmental outcome for this project is<br />

to make significant progress on or achieve the TMDL for<br />

fecal coliform bacteria. Project activities will be focused<br />

to on-the-ground implementation practices that reduce<br />

fecal coliform bacteria levels and educational activities.<br />

By applying significant implementation practices, this<br />

project will also increase wildlife habitat and improve<br />

aquatic habitat. The project will continue to strive to<br />

create a sense of watershed stewardship and community<br />

pride in clean water, a social goal from previous grants.<br />

Lake Waconia Stormwater BMP Enhancement – 2014<br />

Sponsor: Carver County Water Management<br />

Organization (CCWMO)<br />

Funding: Clean Water Partnership (Grant) $93,000<br />

Purpose: Mitigate phosphorus and TSS loading to Lake<br />

Waconia by enhancing urban stormwater treatment with<br />

the installation and Inspection (to follow guidelines of the<br />

Minnesota Stormwater Manual) of up to 5 bioretention<br />

areas, a sand iron filtration bench, and approximately 90<br />
