Merry Christmas
And
Happy New Year
From
The Asian Angler And
The Asian Publisher
My fellow anglers and friends,
Greetings to all. Time flies really fast. Another year is coming
to past and I can still remember the day we started The Asian
Angler magazine as if it were only yesterday. Now after three years and looking
back, we have made such a big difference not only in the fishing world but
also in the world of publishing. Who would have known that a small team of
Malaysians would be the ones rendering “traditional” e-magazines obsolete
with the “mobile magazine” concept. We did it.
We have journeyed far in this adventure and we have decided to take on higher
mountains. As of this month (December 2015) we have become a publishing
house. We are no more just a magazine. We are now The Asian Publisher
at www.theasianpublisher.com and we now publish The Asian Angler, Majalah
Pemancing Asia, and Escapy (travel magazine). Do visit us and check out our
magazines of which are still free for your reading pleasure.
That said, I must apologize for this month’s issue being late due to all the
changes and moving and rebuilding, and etc, etc, etc. With this big step we
will have to grow our team as well. We will do so next year. So if you’ve been
wanting to be part of our team, stay tuned.
I wish all of you superb fishing during this monsoon and do ensure that safety
is given paramount priority. There have been some reported incidents of people
being swept by currents in rivers. So take care and stay safe.
Thank you and happy reading.
Cheers,
Phil
Abu Garcia Salty Stage
Part 1
BV8
Some like it hot. Some like it cold. Some want it both
ways. The demands of human beings are a plenty. Take
for example the car. At first we had them in manual
gearbox. Then came the automatic gearbox. Still drivers
were not satisfied. They wanted both and thus we
now have gearboxes than can do both manual and automatic
the likes of Tiptronic gearboxes.
9
Multipurpose
The same goes to fishing. We want our fishing tackle
to be able to do lots of things. We want our lures to
be able to find fish. We want rods that can do both
spinning and casting. We want lines to be thinner
than braid but invisible like fluorocarbon. We want
a lot but let us take a look at a casting reel that is
also made for jigging.
Inshore Fishing
The Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 is a reel designed
for both casting and jigging. More precisely, it is
made for inshore or bay type of fishing where waters
are shallow and the fishing considered to be
saltwater light tackle fishing.
11
Two Handles
To be able to do both casting and jigging, the Abu
Garcia Salty Stage BV8 reel comes with both a double
handle and a single power handle. The double
handle with EVA knobs is like most handles you find
on a baitcasting reel. this handle is 95mm in length
with a 4mm thickness.
Power Handle
The other handle is a single EVA knob power handle
than can be set at a length of either 60mm or 70mm
depending on the user’s preference. Installing this
handle instantly transforms the reel into a jigging
reel.
13
Handle Lengths
Why the difference in handle lengths? Well, at certain
angles a longer length gives you leverage allowing
you to exert more force on the fish without
adding more strength. A longer handle also quickens
the speed of retrieve. 1 turn of a longer handle
equals to more turns of the spool if compared to the
same spool being cranked with a shorter handle.
Remember Robotech?
I am not sure how many of you are fans of Robotech.
The Salty Stage BV8 reminds me of the Mechas
with its sleek somewhat robotic looks. The gunmetal
grey and chrome parts add to the Mecha outlook.
15
Tough Frame
As with the Mechas, toughness is key. To hold everything
steady the Salty Stage BV8 comes with a tough
and robust aluminium alloy frame that supports everything
within it even under heavy pressure. This
allows the reel to continue working smoothly during
the fight with a brute.
Lightweight Spool
To cast lighter lures the Salty Stage BV8 comes with
a highly ported lightweight shallow spool. That said,
it is capable of taking in enough line for most types
of inshore casting or jigging. The spool is capable of
taking 220 metres of 10lb mono lines or 250 metres
of 10lb braided line.
17
Drag Clicker
When a big fish is stripping line out of your spool,
your adrenaline starts running and the excitement
begins. However, most baitcasting reels remain as
quiet as an electric car as lines get stripped away.
This reel screams and thus heightens the excitement
level. Screaming reels add on a lot more fun.
Magnetic Brakes
When it comes to casting, the Salty Stage BV8 uses
the “Magtrax II” magnetic brake system to control
the spool. Some of you may be wondering if the
magnets actually do what they are supposed to do
since magnets have no effect on aluminium; well
do refer to The Asian Angler January 2013 issue to
learn how they work.
19
Drag System
These days most reels come fitted with carbon drag
washers. The Salty Stage BV8 is no different. It
comes with Abu Garcia’s long proven “Carbon Matrix”
Drag system that has been powering the Abu
Garcia reels for many years now. The benefit is a
strong drag that remains smooth.
Lab Test
Equipment Used
Line: Berkley Fireline (fused)
Poundage: 20lb
Abu Garcia claims that the Salty Stage BV8 has a
max drag of 7kg. With that in mind we reeled a few
yards of 20lb fused line and secured it directly to the
anchor. We increased the drag to almost full and
pulled. Our meter showed that it exceeded the 7kg
mark while the drag remained smooth. We maxed it
and got it to 18.4lb or 8.3kg with the drag still smooth.
21
Summary
So far we only managed to put it through the lab test
and the results are good. However, we have yet to
see how it performs in the field. Lookout for our next
issue where we take it to the battle grounds and pit
it against some finned gladiators.

Rodford Camo Dry bag
For The Aquaphobic
Dry bags are super important to anglers especially those
who love to fish on boats, kayaks, and other watercrafts.
Even to those who love Fishing along jungle streams and
rivers.
Recently we tested out the Rodford Aquaphobic Camo
Dry Bag. To test the dry bag we drafted a plan. The bag
needs to be tortured and it need to be drowned. That way
we know for sure that it will be able to handle most situations
not taking into consideration hardcore abuses.
25
Fooling About
First we took it to a field, allowed air to fill up, and
we sealed the bag. We then decided to play catch
and threw it about. It flew up high and crashed a
few times. Yes, we were abusing it and I admit to
that. Anyhow, after our fooling about we inspected
the bag and all seemed fine. Of course we do not
recommend that you throw your dry bags about like
we did.
Floating On A Stream
Next we took the dry bag to a stream, threw the
mobile phone of the guy who decided to play ball
with the bag in, and threw it into the stream. Not a
deep one. Just one that is about two feet deep. We
allowed it to float about while we ate a sandwhich.
Out of nowhere someone’s kid sat on it thinking that
it would make a good boat but of course it didn’t. He
just tumbled and ended up in the water while our
friend who’s mobile phone is in the bag panicked a
little and “accidentally” let out an adult rated word.
27
Having A Splash
Next the dry bag with the mobile phone inside was
given a splash. Not just a splash. The amount of water
splashing on it was quite massive. Not as deadly
as the Niagara Falls but it will give anyone standing
beneath it a good massage and a pounding. Needless
to say, our friend who’s mobile phone is being
tortured in the bag felt like he had a bunch of red
ants his pants.
The Relief
After about 15 minutes of being pounded by lots of
water we decided to end the torture, especially that
of our friend. We wiped the bag dry and handed it to
our tortured friend. He opened the bag, put his hand
in, and took out his mobile phone. That followed with
a smile. The phone survived the torture. Our friend
survived the torture too. So did the Rodford Aquaphobic
Camo Dry Bag.
29
Verdict
Personally I like the camo design. It also remained
dry inside despite the massive amounts of water
torture that it went through. Price wise, I find it to be
decent. One thing to note, before you put your expensive
cameras, mobile phones, and other expensive
gadgets, do test out your dry bag first to ensure
that the one you have is not defective. This goes
especially for waterproof pouches. We tested some
(other brands) and some did leak.

Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad
The Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad is one heck of
a bait. They are great baits for fishing snakeheads
especially the powerful and ferocious giant snakehead
(toman). They look like real fish and swim like
a live fish.
33
Life Like
The weighted head of the Swim Shad helps with casting
allowing for greater distances. When it hit the surface
of the water it dives all the way to the bottom wiggling
its paddle tail giving the impression of a swimming fish.
This action has on many occasions generated a reaction
strike from predator fishes.
Scent And Flavour
Another feature that appeals to the olfactory senses of
predator fishes are its scent and flavours of which scientist
at Berkley has spent more than 25 years researching.
How Powerbaits work is that they attract fishes with its
scent and when the fishes bite the bait, it releases flavour
and that flavour is said to make fish hold on longer.

Abu Garcia Salty Stage
Skid Jig
The NEW Salty Stage Skid Jig was inspired by a
squid’s darting and attacking action. This innovative
motion is achieved by the keel shape on the bottom
of the jig.
It is a completely new style of jigging. While the typical
metal jig catches fish after it touches the bottom
or during retrieve. The Skid Jig is designed to catch
fish even when it is falling by its ‘switch back’ action
imitating squid attacking bait fish.
37
Mimics Squids
It also, mimics a squid skidding from side to side
when it is in distress and the skidding motion, creates
lots of flashes in the water.
39
Swtich Back Action
The Skid Jig can be jigged vertically or horizontally
to create that ‘switch back’ action, that has been
tested and proven to out fish other jigs.

Pflueger President Limited Edition
Presidential Goodness
Pflueger has been making some really good looking
and lightweight reels. The Pflueger President
Limited Edition being lighter, better looking, and a
faster reel; brings the President reel series to the
next level.
47
Black Knight
To me, the Pflueger President Limited Edition conjures
up an image of a black knight (not the Dark Knight aka
Batman), the knights that would give King Arthur and
his knights a headache so big he’d wished he had not
pulled out the Excalibur from the rock.
Sinisterly Nice
The President Limited Edition comes in a dark metallic
black body and rotor, with gun metal grey
chromed on its side (rotor) and at the bottom of the
reel. it has red lines to add character to its design.
The spool in gun metal grey with red linings. Put
them all together and you get a black knight.
49
Spool
The spool feels light. It is ported with an unusual design
of squares and rounded rectangles. The spool is
braid ready of which means that you can use braided
lines on it with the need of a monofilament backing.
Thick Bail Wire
The President comes with a thick bail wire, perhaps a
show of strength and power as with most knights; an
intimidating look helps psychologically. Yes, that applies
to fishing too. When an angler uses tough looking
and feeling fishing tackle, his or her confidence is
boosted. This help win battles.
51
Splendid Handle
The handle of the President looks really good. It come
in gun metal black with a carbon fibre handle. The
knob is made of rosewood. Using rosewood not only
adds elegance to the reel. It also adds to its sinister
character since rosewood has red coloured grains.
Smooth Performer
With 9+1 corrosion resistant ball bearings (6+1 on the
size 20), the President Limited Edition is one sleek
and smooth performer. Cranking feels smooth and
connected. The well balanced rotor certainly adds to
the smoothness.
53
Main Shaft & Gears
Pflueger opted to give the President Limited Edition an
aluminium main shaft and aluminium pinion gear. This
is done to bring down the weight of the reel. Pflueger
claims that by doing so they managed to reduce the
weight by 30% on the main shaft and 60% on the pinion
gear.
Sealed Drag
To improve the performance of the drag, the President
Limited Edition comes with an advanced sealed drag
system that keeps water and dirt away thus giving optimum
Z Craft 0 Degree
&
30 Degree
2 X Strong Jig Heads
ZCraft’s 0 Degree and 30 Degree is an extremely
versatile jig head. They feature Owner SW hooks of
which are very popular with serious game anglers.
The uniquely designed head provides very good
swim action for slow and fast retrieves. Together
with the new “X-Flex Locker”, they hold soft plastic
lures firmly in place.
59
0 Degree
The 0 Degree jig heads sits on the bottom flat. This
allows the soft plastic bait to sit flat at the bottom the
way a resting fish would. Giving it a twitch and letting
the soft plastic bait rest again for a few seconds will
attract hits from predators looking for a resting fish to
hit.
30 Degree
The 30 Degree jig heads on the other hand sits at
the bottom with the hook pointed 30 degrees upward.
This allows the soft plastic bait to be at a 30 degree
angle with its head facing the bottom like a feeding
fish or worm. Giving light twitches further enhances
the illusion attracting predators to hit.
Available in X2 and X3 hooks to meet your fishing
needs.

Zen Zagan
Slow Pitch Rod
By Zen X EA
When Zen Zagan started collaborating with Extreme
Anglers, there was a disruption in the force.
Zen Zagan rods took a step onto a whole new level
where occupying good rods can no longer just remain
good. They have got to be better than good.
Here’s why...
63
Custom Rods
The 0 Degree jig heads sits on the bottom flat. This
allows the soft plastic bait to sit flat at the bottom the
way a resting fish would. Giving it a twitch and letting
the soft plastic bait rest again for a few seconds will
attract hits from predators looking for a resting fish to
hit.
Production Rods
Then comes the folks at MGFA, the creators of Zen
Zagan who have been making quality rods and affordable
prices for years. They too are anglers first and
business people second, thus why their rods have a
cult following.
Bridging Custom And Production Rods
The coming together of MGFA and Extreme Anglers
brings custom rods to the production floor which also
means anglers now get to use custom rods at an affordable
price. Oh what fun it is to ride on this train.
65
Brand Conscious?
Of course if you are not brand conscious you would
be jumping for joy when you’ve got a rod that feels
better than one about 8 times the price. For the brand
conscious it would be like racing a Ferrari LaFerarri
on the track and being overtaken by a Nissan GTR
driven by a “Sunday driver.”
The Slow Pitch
That brings us to the Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rod of
which is developed by Extreme Anglers Custom Products
and produced by MGFA. With the slow pitch jigging
game kicking into gear, this rod has been making
waves around the jigging community.
67
Well Designed
The Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rods are well designed
following Japanese rod design cues of which tends
to be the preferred design amongst anglers that purchase
rods of this price point. It comes with a split
rear handle section being separated by an X wrapped
carbon blank section.
Sporty Reel Seat
The reel seat is by Fuji which speaks volumes on its
quality. After all why use anything lesser than the best
when you’ve got a world class rod. A good quality reel
seat is not enough; Extreme Anglers “sportified” by
adding a carbon fibre wrapped nut to it.
69
Rounded Rear EVA
The rear EVA of the rod is rounded with the entire
thing designed somewhat like a light bulb. Why go
with a rounded rear end? Perhaps it could be anglers
these days being more macho, battling brutes without
the need of a fighting belt. A rounded rear end
perhaps reduces the pain although the battle scars
remain. Maybe it is just aesthetics.
Quality Blank
Good quality blanks do not have to cost a kidney. The
Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rod comes with a good quality
blank that has a tip with good rebound power and a
butt section that is stiff and capable to taking a beating
by brutes.
71
Quality Guides
When it comes to building one of the best rods, nothing
is left to chance thus the use of high quality Fuji
Guides. Fuji tangle free K Guides System is used on
the Zen Zagan Slow Pitch. This tough and smooth
guides reduces line wear and can take a beating.
They are also light weight of which brings the weight
of the rod down.
Summary
The Zen Zagan Slow Pitch Rod By Zen X EA is no
ordinary rod. It may not have the brand appeal as the
Japanese names such as one that resembles a big
big bass or another one of which reminds us of something
that will be always green; yet the Zen Zagan
Slow Pitch will hold its own and can stand tall with
ease amongst the big boys.

OR Craft Spearyu
If you are looking for a lure that swims well in flowing
waters or waters with current, or if you are simply
looking for a lure that swims fast, the ORCraft
Spearyu is one to consider.
75
Lure Profile
The Spearyu lure comes in a flat and slim body profile
giving it both good aerodynamics and hydrodynamics
which means that you get better casting distance and
you can make it can swim fast. It darts very well too
imitating fleeing scared or panicking fish.
Weighted
Spearyu lures are weighted with magnetic weights.
This helps with casting where the sudden shift in
weight of the of the magnetic weights thrusts the lure
forward giving it the extra push during the launch of
the lure at the beginning of the cast thus driving the
lure further.
77
Well Balanced In Water
With the weights together, the lure is well balanced
sitting on the surface of the water. This also allows
for better manipulation of the lure during the retrieve
whether it is darting, twitching, or simply being retrieved
at a constant speed.

NEW
Launches
Classic Bluewater
Poppers
The Bluewater P163 Rocket Popper is an extremely
versatile lure that can be fished in a number of different
ways. The P163 features a special tail-bias
weighting system that serves two main purposes.
The heavy tail weight causes the lure to fly straight
and true through the air – meaning the P163 casts
like a rocket.
The tail weighting also causes the lure to sit nose-up
in the water during the retrieve. This nose-up position
causes the lure to literally skip and dart along the surface
during a straight, high-speed retrieve; perfectly
imitating a fleeing surface baitfish.
95
The P163 can also be fished with a slow, jerking motion
which will see it swim with a “walk the dog” action,
much like a stick bait.
The P163 Rocket Popper is ideal for all bluewater
casting, and will appeal to all large pelagic species
including Mackerel, Queenfish, Trevally, and all Tuna
species including Longtail, Yellowfin and Southern
Bluefin.
Lure Fishing Basics
Part 2
Crankbaits
There are so many crank baits available. They come
in so many shapes and sizes and with many names given
by various brands. They are called different things
in different places. In general they are designed to look
like fish such as bass, gar fish, ballyhoo, minnows, and
shads. There are also those resembling bugs and frods.
Minnows and Shads are some of the most widely used.
103
Minnows
In general minnows come in a slimmer body design with
a longish profile. From the basic design, lure designers
have created a variety of different body designs depending
on the desired swim action of the lures. With
that comes new names and terms such as walkers, jerk
baits, etc.
Shads
In general shads come in a body design that is somewhat
taller in the mid towards the 3rd quarter of the
front end; and with a shorter profile. Again designers
have created a variety of body designs based on the
basic shad design.
105
Frogs
Frog crankbaits are designed to look like a variety of
frogs. They are mainly top water swimmers. From these
designs a few other frog crankbaits varieties are available
with some given a bill or a lip.
Other
Designs
With lure designers having to out-design one and other
we have now got a variety of crankbaits that can
be found such those resembling snakes (head), various
insects such as cicadas and grasshoppers, gator
heads, etc.
107
Jointed
While most crankbaits come in one piece, there are
crankbaits that are jointed; meaning that they come in
two or more parts being joint together to make a lure.
This gives the lure a more lifelike swim action.
Lip Or
Lipless
Crankbaits come with a variety of bills or lips depending
on the desired swim action as well as swim depth.
There are also crankbaits that do not have a bill or lip.
They are called lipless crankbaits. More about these
later.
To
Summarize
There are many crankbaits out there but these are
amongst the common ones used. We could go deeper
but then it would be better done in the “Knowledge
Wise” section. Next issue we will look at an important
part of crankbaits; the bill or lip as well as the lipless.
All About Hooks:
Part 2
HOok
Types
When it comes to hooks the choices are a plenty
and can get quite confusing. Hooks come in various
forms or types for a host of different purposes. With
this issue let us take a look at some of the types of
hooks that are available in the market starting off with
the more common ones.
111
Chinu
hooks
One of the most used hooks these days are Chinu hooks.
They are amongst the favourite hooks used by bottom
bait anglers catching fishes such as mullets, breams,
tilapia, carp, and a host of many other fishes.
The
Eye
Chinu hooks have an eye that faces forward, meaning
that should you place it lying down on a flat surface, the
eye will be looking parallel to the flat surface. Should
you put a fishing line through it will be parallel to the flat
surface. The eye is very slightly bent backwards away
from the hook point. This is also known as “tuned up”
eye.
113
The
Bend
Chinu hooks come with a more rounded and offset bend.
An offset bend means that the hook point and the shank
are not aligned. This means that if you were to put the
hook lying down on a flat surface the hook will not lie
flat. The point is pointed slightly off to the right or the
left of the shank. This is said to allow for better hook up.
Beak
hooks
Another common hook used by bottom bait anglers is
the Beak hook. These hooks are used for fishing an array
of fish both saltwater and freshwater species. Beak
refers more to the hook point and they come in a variety
of names and types.
115
The
Character
Beak hooks generally have a point that is curved upwards
towards the shank. It looks somewhat like the
beak of a bird. Beak hooks come in all variety of hook
eyes from tuned up to spade ends (flat without hole).
Many of us take hooks for granted but as one get more
intimate with them one will understand more and be
able to choose hooks that are best suited for a certain
type of fishing.

Get Your Kids Fishing
An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we
experience nature, we improve
our analytical skills, we absorb
vitamins from the sun, we expend
our minds, we learn about the
environment, etc.
There are so many benefits to
fishing and we should reduce our
kids addiction to video games,
computer games, playing with
mobile devices, etc. We should get
them to interact more with our
environment and teach them a
thing or two about life and living
life.
With this in mind we hope to
encourage you to take your kid(s)
fishing and have dedicated a section
Luring Snakeheads
Here’s my buddy, Azrin with his first snakehead. The
week before he scored a snakehead but it dropped right
before he picked it up. It took him one year of fishing to
finally score this snakehead. His hardwork finally paid off.
A healthy juvenile snakehead caught in light rain. This fish
was aggressive but very smart. It took one hour of casting
into the same area before it finally decided to give a bite.
125
A decent snakehead caught on the Surecatch Tiny
Frog. I added a spinner to help attract snakeheads. I
am still excited to see a fish chase a frog just like the
first time seeing it. A snakehead will usually trail closely
behind the frog before blowing up on it.
A beautiful solid Striped Snakehead on the Abu Garcia
Tournament K. This fish was caught on a popper
in some thick grass which was not much of a challenge
for the Tournament K. I fought and landed it
with ease.
127
After a few minutes of being revived, this fish is ready to
go. All fishes in this article were released to grow bigger
and badder.
Tight lines & happy fishing.
