people A Day with Judy Murray In June this year, Judy Murray invited female coaches from across Surrey to join her for a coach education day. The day offered a 10 & Under camp for girls across the county and the South East and included a school session for secondary aged players. Judy’s aim was to encourage female Level 1, 2 or 3 coaches from clubs in Surrey to get on court with her and hopefully help to inspire the next generation of female players. Tennis in Surrey spoke to Kate Maurici, of Will to Win Sheen Common, about her experience of the day. “Judy has a knack of making you feel very relaxed and like you really deserve to be a tennis coach. I loved Judy’s first metaphor of the day that women are like snowflakes, drifting. If they meet something hard they can often melt and disappear but if they collect together with other snowflakes they become something strong and invincible. The day at Surbiton really felt like that. Judy calmly led a group of top County junior players through their paces in front of a group of female coaches keeping it fun, focussed and competitive. The smiles on the girls’ faces really showed that Judy’s methods work. people ‘don’t overburden the girls with verbal instructions’, ‘intelligent players will self-correct - ask them to come up with the solution’, and in terms of school’s tennis, ‘give the children fun, achievable exercises’. I have since tried out her basic racket warm up with a school group with resounding success. Judy makes you re-think your coaching style. We all know our sessions need to be fun but I think that it’s easy quickly to revert to the standard coaching styles, which sometimes lack that relaxed element. I was reminded Judy calmly led a group of top County junior players through their paces in front of a group of female coaches keeping it fun, focussed and competitive. ” on the day, that even top players can learn and improve their technique while having a lot of fun. I believe that coaches, female and male, need to listen to what she is saying if we want to promote our sport to more girls. It’s not dumbing the coaching down for girls, but recognising that we can appeal to more girls and get more out of them by employing methods that the girls find exciting and enjoyable. I left feeling part of a really strong and successful team.” www.LTA.org.uk/in-your-area/Surrey Follow us on twitter @SurreyLTA tennis in surrey 2015 7
