places Surrey Great British Tennis Weekend - 2015 Tennis in Surrey interviewed three of the county’s places to play on how they got involved with the 2015 Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW). We hope even more will be involved next year. Dorking Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, Surrey 9 courts Sunday 14th June How did you prepare for the GBTW? We promoted our event in many ways. Many magazine adverts in months prior to event such as Families, which are free publications telling families what’s going on. Local parish magazines. Every local school had parent mail in two weeks preceding the event. This was combined with a demo mini tennis court being set up in the middle of St Martins Walk, a shopping centre. This attracted much attention. Leaflets were also given out then by members wearing green printed t shirts advertising the day. We spoke much of the Blue Peter Sports badge where if you take a photo of a friend trying a new sport you gain this badge. What did you do for the day? On the day we ran a specific U8 session, for which there was a huge turnout. Up to a hundred children. Ball machine, fastest serve, a group of “hitters”, adults to play against anyone wishing to play. Three courts were dedicated to juniors with mini nets on these. Face painting run by a volunteer. Barbecue and ice creams. Tea, coffee and home-made cakes made by the members available all day. Voluntary donations were asked for to go towards our charity. The Bar was of course open and our Craft table was VERY popular! We also had two coaches and the rest was run by volunteers who were members. How did you encourage new players to the game? On the day offers included a 3 and 9 month membership. One adult would allow all their children to join free. This was followed up with an induction session and tennis coaching groups offered specifically to them. Also events such as Wimbledon Day and an American Tournament for all 4 tennis in surrey 2015 facebook.com/TennisSurrey www.LTA.org.uk/in-your-area/Surrey

places members timed to encourage participation. 65 adults and 65 juniors joined. Well over 200 people attended on the day. Why do you think the day was a success? We had two teams of “meet-er and greeters”. They wore the green t shirts and badges and would welcome anyone in. It was an amazing day which really brought all sections of the club together. Whether it was through lending a racket, baking a cake, dropping leaflets through doors or being prepared to hit against someone wanting to play we couldn’t have done it without such a team effort. Many of the older juniors helped to coach and those that had said they would give an hour of their time ended up staying for the day. It was a success because of the joint effort everyone gave and combined “family feel” the day had. Cranleigh LT&SC, Merton 5 hard floodlit courts 16th and 17th May How did you prepare for the GBTW? We printed 2000 leaflets - four primary schools and leaflet dropped, including posters around the local area, My Merton magazine, Facebook, Twitter, the GBTW website, regularly emailed the internal database and most importantly WORD OF MOUTH! We used the GBTW logo but also did our own flyers to add more details about the day. What did you do for the day? We ran Mini Tennis Red/Orange/ Green, Junior Tennis, Adult Beginners, Tennis Xpress, Cardio Tennis, Match Play, Family Time, Free Play. We also provided Face painting, Table Tennis, Swing Ball, BBQ, Prince were there to support the event, and a popular fastest serve competition. Coaches worked the event and we had them doing the sessions we feel they do best. We had older juniors to assist the coaches, bar staff, as well as volunteers to do face painting and the BBQ. Our volunteers did the meet, greet and played tennis with potential new members. Committee members sold memberships, all round it was a great team effort! How did you encourage new players to the game? We offered seven sessions half price (this was for all the sessions we currently have available). No joining fee on full adult membership. Tennis Xpress £35 for seven sessions and they didn’t have to join, Ten Cardio Tennis Sessions for £50. Saving £20. What do you think made the weekend a success? GBTW website is great, the banner was really popular. Online sign up was good, very few people called, they all booked online. It was a great weekend for adults, children and the whole family. Epsom Lawn Tennis Club, Epsom and Ewell 12 courts Saturday 25 April, 2015 How did you prepare for the GBTW? We had a large banner outside the site, also advertised in the Epsom Guardian, through posters in Sainsburys, in the coffee shops at Epsom train station, and through three local primary schools newsletters. What did you do for the day? We ran free coaching with the Head Coach, playing tennis with the adult ‘social members’, other coaches practiced with other juniors. We had a BBQ going as well as cakes and tea on offer. We had two coaches on site (volunteering), and around ten club volunteers looking after guests and sorting out tennis for them. Why do you think the day was a success? The main banner outside the club worked very well as was highly visible from the road – the LTA website/social media was useful as well. The Epsom Open Day was a fantastic success, with the most ever attendees we have had at an Open Day and most sign ups. It was very refreshing to see a real mix of adults and juniors across a range of tennis experience and ability. www.LTA.org.uk/in-your-area/Surrey Follow us on twitter @SurreyLTA tennis in surrey 2015 5
