with little between the teams
apart from a few nervy unforced
errors and easy put-aways at the
net, but then at 3-2 down in the
first set the boys suddenly started
to spot the angles and movements
of their opponents at the net to
hit some stunning winners down
the line and pick up volleys from
the floor that nobody thought
possible and suddenly they started
to believe…they could actually
win this! After coming back from
15-40 down in two games running
the boys just seemed inspired at
sudden death deuce and took the
first set. With confidence running
high, their play just got better and
after a couple of stunning crowd
The final day…
“Surrey lead the match 3-1 over
Middlesex going into the doubles
on the final day. However, Surrey
had now lost Gemma Heath to
injury, meaning that three players
weren’t eligible for the doubles due
to injury- Jizel, Eloise and Gemma.
Fortunately Freya Hampton-Evans
showed her commitment to Surrey
by traveling up early Saturday
morning and giving Surrey the
opportunity to field a full doubles
team. Freya and Elisa would play
two doubles and Alessandra and
Kung would move up and play one
doubles.
Middlesex took the lead winning
the first set in both doubles and
then winning the number two
doubles match, making the score
Surrey 3-2 Middlesex. Kung and
Alessandra were able to claw
back and win the second set
6-4 and take the match into a
championship tiebreak. Kung and
Alessandra had done fantastically
well to take the match to a
third set against a pairing with
combined ratings that were three
above them. They fought hard and
were able to pull off the tiebreak
of the championship winning
10-5, and with that Surrey won the
County Cup Championship.”
