The Club itself operates like
many other tennis clubs in the
local area but when hosting
an international event plenty
needed to be done so the players,
the crowd and the members
could enjoy the facilities. When
asked about preparation, Roy
explains: “we started planning
months in advance with various
governing bodies but thanks
to the professionalism of our
partners and dedication of our
army of volunteers who were
mostly members everything went
without a hitch. The attention to
detail meant we had to work with
players, ball crews, spectators,
caterers, local authority, residents
and plenty more all in the space of
a few hours.”
British Fed Cup Captain, Judy
Murray, who knows what it’s like
to be in the Surbiton crowd as she
watched her son Andy, recalls,
“I remember Andy playing here
as a teenager in the run up to
Wimbledon. It was a wonderful
experience to play in front of
a packed crowd on grass and
looking out today you’ll see lots
of the stars of the future here.”

memories of this event”

USA prospect Stefan Kozlov, Denis
Kudla who is now close to the top
50 in the world, eventual finalist
Naomi Osaka who won The WTA
Rising Stars event or winner Vitalia
Diachenko who went on to play
Serena Williams at the US Open.
On the court there were great
matches watched by capacity
crowds but attracting over two
thousand locals was the kids’ zone
which is designed to attract the
next generation of British stars.
Organised by Surbiton Racket and
Fitness Club, it was a huge success
as busloads of school children had
their serve timed, participated in
lessons and watched the tennis
