Tennis Surrey welcomes a
new President – John Phillips
Following in the footsteps of the
County’s previous President, Tony
Scarlett, was always going to be
a challenge after Tony’s years of
great service to Tennis Surrey. So
we are delighted to announce the
appointment of our new President,
John Phillips, as someone who
will be well able to do this. John’s
appointment started from the
1st October this year and we are
delighted that Tony is going to
remain on the Council.
John will already be familiar
to many of you as the County’s
Competitions Secretary, a post from
which John resigned last year whilst
still remaining on the Council.
His history with the Council goes
back a long way, with John first
being elected in 1977, having been
nominated by Reigate LTC.
John was at once appointed to
the Competitions Committee,
on which he has continued to
serve ever since, becoming Hon.
Competition’s Secretary in 1997.
John oversaw the introduction of
many new events, particularly in
the senior age groups, as well as
overseeing the Wilson Leagues
being moved on-line following
years of manual work. He has been
responsible for running numerous
events, both summer and winter, in
particular the Men’s Open Singles
which he has managed since
summer 1978.
John was appointed
Examinations Officer in 1980 -
where he was responsible for the
Part 1 coaching course and exam –
and in 1984 this role was increased
to having responsibility for setting
up and running the entire course..
John held this role until his
resignation in 2000. He took over
the role of County Tournament
Organiser in the mid-eighties and
held this role for 20 years.
John’s main contribution
has been to the County postal
competitions. Whilst these events
always attract entries from leading
county and national players, John
has always maintained that they
are primarily for the benefit of
ordinary club players who are
members of Surrey registered clubs.
Entry to these events is one of the
benefits for clubs and other organisations
registering with Surrey. As
you will see from the above, no one
could have worked harder for the
County over the years. We hope
that Surrey Clubs will welcome
John as our new President and that
over the course of his presidency
many of you will get to meet him.
