<strong>Tennis</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong> welcomes a<br />

new President – John Phillips<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the footsteps of the<br />

County’s previous President, Tony<br />

Scarlett, was always go<strong>in</strong>g to be<br />

a challenge after Tony’s years of<br />

great service to <strong>Tennis</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>. So<br />

we are delighted to announce the<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment of our new President,<br />

John Phillips, as someone who<br />

will be well able to do this. John’s<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment started from the<br />

1st October this year and we are<br />

delighted that Tony is go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> on the Council.<br />

John will already be familiar<br />

to many of you as the County’s<br />

Competitions Secretary, a post from<br />

which John resigned last year whilst<br />

still rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on the Council.<br />

His history with the Council goes<br />

back a long way, with John first<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g elected <strong>in</strong> 1977, hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ated by Reigate LTC.<br />

John was at once appo<strong>in</strong>ted to<br />

the Competitions Committee,<br />

on which he has cont<strong>in</strong>ued to<br />

serve ever s<strong>in</strong>ce, becom<strong>in</strong>g Hon.<br />

Competition’s Secretary <strong>in</strong> 1997.<br />

John oversaw the <strong>in</strong>troduction of<br />

many new events, particularly <strong>in</strong><br />

the senior age groups, as well as<br />

oversee<strong>in</strong>g the Wilson Leagues<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g moved on-l<strong>in</strong>e follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

years of manual work. He has been<br />

responsible for runn<strong>in</strong>g numerous<br />

events, both summer and w<strong>in</strong>ter, <strong>in</strong><br />

particular the Men’s Open S<strong>in</strong>gles<br />

which he has managed s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

summer 1978.<br />

John was appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ations Officer <strong>in</strong> 1980 -<br />

where he was responsible for the<br />

Part 1 coach<strong>in</strong>g course and exam –<br />

and <strong>in</strong> 1984 this role was <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

to hav<strong>in</strong>g responsibility for sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up and runn<strong>in</strong>g the entire course..<br />

John held this role until his<br />

resignation <strong>in</strong> 2000. He took over<br />

the role of County Tournament<br />

Organiser <strong>in</strong> the mid-eighties and<br />

held this role for 20 years.<br />

John’s ma<strong>in</strong> contribution<br />

has been to the County postal<br />

competitions. Whilst these events<br />

always attract entries from lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

county and national players, John<br />

has always ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that they<br />

are primarily for the benefit of<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary club players who are<br />

members of <strong>Surrey</strong> registered clubs.<br />

Entry to these events is one of the<br />

benefits for clubs and other organisations<br />

register<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>Surrey</strong>. As<br />

you will see from the above, no one<br />

could have worked harder for the<br />

County over the years. We hope<br />

that <strong>Surrey</strong> Clubs will welcome<br />

John as our new President and that<br />

over the course of his presidency<br />

many of you will get to meet him.<br />
