The Trafic vanis one of the<br />
best small commercial vans. This<br />
is because it has a light clutch<br />
pedal,reach and rake steering wheel,<br />
a good driving view, is extremely<br />
comfortable, plus a height adjustable<br />
drivers seat. Ultimately, the Trafic is<br />
a work horse that will become a good<br />
companion to your work life.<br />
In terms of power, this Renault<br />
has a 1.6 litre four cylinder twin-

turbo diesel engine, with a high output<br />
of 103kW power and 340Nm of torque.<br />
These features make your work life much<br />
easier than you think. The engine is<br />
coupled to a six speed manual gear box<br />
with a light clutch pedal. Although it is a<br />
long wheel based commercial vehicle, the<br />
Trafic is extremely easy to drive. It went<br />
through the drive-thru of many fast food<br />
outlets like a piece of cake.<br />
The press car that we drove was<br />
fitted with a $1,990 premium pack which<br />
included: extra airbags, a wide view mirror<br />
(located in the passengers sun visor), in<br />
dash mobile phone cradle and a seveninch<br />
touchscreen. The touchscreen also<br />
had a smart satellite navigation system<br />
plus a superb stereo.<br />
The uniqueness of this car comes<br />
from the styling. Not only does it have<br />
a fantastic bamboo green body, it has<br />
a bold and in your face huge grille.<br />
The chrome Renault emblem slightly<br />
protrudesout of the bonnet rather staying<br />
inside the grille. The backward swayed<br />
huge headlights create a more dynamic<br />
and on road presence for the van. The<br />
bottom half of the bumper uses dark<br />
plastic for easy cleaning and hostsa set<br />
of stylish fog lamps.<br />
Even though it doesnt have an<br />
automatic version, driving the van is very<br />
easy. It uses a crisp, 6 speed manual<br />
gear box. The steering wheel has a nice<br />
grip and is well weighted- you wont feel<br />
tired easily. The speedometer only gives<br />
a digital read out, and it makes sense as<br />
speed limit signs are in digital formatas<br />
opposed to being pointed out by a<br />
needle.<br />
I love the Renaults mobile phone<br />
cradle. It is very considerate. A driver<br />
needs to find a place to put his / her<br />

mobile phone. The phone cradle comes<br />
with a height adjustable clip that grips<br />
that phone tightly.I also like the extra<br />
wide mirror because; it sits behind<br />
the passengers sun visor. At first, I<br />
thought a female passenger might have<br />
demanded for this extra large vanity<br />
mirror, but that is not the case. The<br />
view is panoramically wide, and I used<br />
it to look at areas outside the range of<br />
the side mirror and even towards the<br />
groundjust outside the passengers<br />
door. How clever!<br />
Driving environment? It is super<br />
quiet. The driving cabin is separated from<br />
the cargo area by a fixed metal partition<br />
<br />
panel called the bulkhead. It has a glass<br />
window that you can look through to see<br />
the back of the van even the outside of<br />
the van. As such, the airconditioning<br />
works extremely well in the driving cab.<br />
As the bulkhead also works as noise<br />
insulation for the driving cab, it is very<br />
quiet.<br />
Initially, I thought the central fixed<br />
headrest was in the way for the view<br />
through the bulkhead. Eventually, my<br />
outside the box thinking kicked in. The<br />
central seat back could be folded down<br />
to make way for a work table.<br />
The driving cab sits three people,<br />
but two would be ideal. Shoulder space<br />
is limited and legroom for the central<br />
passenger is hampered by the in-dash<br />
gearstick housing.<br />
The Trafic is a front wheel drive van<br />
which enables the rear floor to be extra<br />
low. It has a huge sliding door on the<br />
passenger side, plus a double barn door<br />
with double windscreen wipers. Should<br />
you need some extra space, the left<br />
bottom corner of the bulkhead has a<br />
magnetic locking trap door that allows<br />
approximately 40cm of room to store<br />
long objects under the passenger seats.<br />
This creates a total of 4.15m which can<br />
be carried inside the cargo area. The<br />
payload of this van is 1,235kg to 1274<br />
kg. The Trafic can take two Australian<br />
standard pallets of cargo, making this is<br />

I have lived in Hong Kong, Australia,<br />
France and Mexico. In the past few<br />
years, I have travelled to Malaysia,<br />
Central Australia, Singapore, Taiwan,<br />
Los Angeles, Myanmar, Tibet, Cuba,<br />
Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama,<br />
Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica<br />
Less than 5 years since graduation,<br />
more than 15 professional exams, I can<br />
almost call myself an associate actuary.<br />
Yet I am very different from a typical<br />
actuary.<br />
I am a risk-lover. I love adventure. I<br />
love travelling.<br />
I believe travel makes one modest.<br />
The more one travels, the more you will<br />
see what a tiny place you occupy in the<br />
world. I continuously dream a little dream<br />
to see more of this big great world out<br />
there.<br />
I decided my next adventure<br />
would be Africa – wildlife safari, Sahara<br />
deserts, sand dunes, tropical rain<br />
forests, big cat stalk, pygmy hippos,<br />
fabulous festivals, irresistible music, the<br />
mysterious world of masks and secret<br />
societies. The mosaic of African people<br />
whose histories are epic and whose daily<br />
struggles are similarly so.<br />
I also became very interested in<br />
a new subject called micro-insurance.<br />
Micro-insurance first emerged in the<br />
late 1990s in the context of international<br />
development and microfinance.<br />
Against a backdrop of the microcredit<br />
movement, micro-insurance was singled<br />
out as much needed financial service to<br />
allow the poor to gain access to credit,<br />
to support the viability of credit providers<br />
and to protect the productive assets of<br />
the loan taker. In the years since, as it<br />
has become a regular part of the drive<br />
for financial inclusion. Africa being the<br />
poorest continent on earth made it one<br />
of the best places for learning about<br />

Togo was but Togo<br />
choose me and I knew I was<br />
To-Go. Almost immediately<br />
after sending through my<br />
resume introducing myself<br />
and my intention of<br />
volunteering in Africa for<br />
a few months, I received<br />
a response from a<br />
senior actuary based in<br />
West Africa. I have since<br />
learnt that this actuary<br />
was an executive director of<br />
Actuaries Without Borders.<br />
She welcomed my skillset and have<br />
since introduced me to a new business<br />
wonderland of micro-insurance in West<br />
Africa.<br />
To travel is to discover that<br />
everyone is wrong about other countries.<br />
Indeed, as I was packing to leave on my<br />
adventure to West Africa, those around<br />
me became concerned about my safety<br />
(editors note: parents excepted) and<br />
my next three months in one of the<br />
poorest regions in the world. Alike to<br />
skydiving, although one may know that<br />
such activity is highly regulated and the<br />
risk of accident is even lower than taking<br />
a hot-air balloon but your heart will still<br />
beat that much faster as you get on the<br />
plane. Yet once you dive out, you will be<br />
in love with flying freely in the sky.<br />
This is the same as taking out a new<br />
step out of ones comfort zone.<br />
To travel is to take a journey into<br />
yourself. Stepping out of the plane<br />
may not be easiest, yet I know I will<br />
never regret my first journey into West<br />
Africa. Allow me to also take you on<br />
my adventure to the home of African<br />
landscapes of our imaginations and<br />
inhabited by an astonishing diversity of<br />
traditional peoples – Togo in West Africa.<br />
