Editor’s Note
In this issue, we celebrate Caroline Sampson, Ghana’s inest radio personality for being an achiever
in the entertainment industry with her smooth and sultry voice. She soothes us on air, exudes
intelligence and touches our very existence with her personality. We delve into her life and uncover
the secrets of being ‘Caroline’.
Kalybos is the new heartthrob in town. My friends say I am funny because I joke over almost everything
but when I met Kalybos and his Manager I realized I was nothing close to funny. I was
inspired by the ability of these two to use an alternative to get to the top. TV is too expensive, You-
Tube should do. Simple! Today they are big on YouTube and TV too. To me they have no room for
excuses. If it must be done ind a way.
I’ve had this debate before, is it possible to start a business without money? I chased Mr. Prince
Amoabeng out of his busy schedule to tell us all. Money or not!
You are safer and well taken care of with the goodness of natural foods like strawberry, soya, water
and garlic which can ight infections and diseases in your vagina? hey would protect the V-zone.
Eat them, feel neat, healthy and odorless “down there”.
I read on the internet about how a lady thought she had gotten a husband until she saw the man’s
underwear, they were all saggy in the wrong places. hat was the end of the relationship. Men, ladies
pay attention to your underwear a lot. Yes! hey do.
It’s been a long year and we wish you the best of luck in 2015. We wish to see you succeed in the
coming year. Remember there is no time to die so stay safe, healthy and be productive. Always insist
on the right thing. Wish to continue this chat but let’s make a date next time. Enjoy every moment
of your life.Cheers!
Beauty
Endless beauty tips and rules to
Q
keep you looking fabulous
How can I get my lips healthy in the harmattan season?
Jenny
ADue to the hot dry air of the harmattan season, the lip loses its natural
moisture. he irst step to keeping a healthy lip is to avoid licking the
lips. It causes cracks on the surface of the lip. You can use a lip balm from time
to time to keep it moist. Vaseline and Shea butter are also perfect alternatives
Q
Shear Butter
Can I remove make up with moisturizer if I run
out of make up remover. Ama
AYou cannot remove make up with a moisturizer. hat is
simply not its purpose. In case you run out of make up
remover, you can opt for olive oil or baby oil, if you have that. You
have a very beautiful and smooth skin and you wouldn’t want it
to change.
Q
Q
My friend wants to know how many times she can re-touch
her hair? Would over re-touching damage her hair? Help!
Emefa
AYes, over re-touching would seriously damage her hair. Her
hair would be over processed, become thin and end up
breaking. Re-touching is meant for new grown hair and not already
relaxed hair. She can re-touch her hair as it is fully grown.
I am Maame Esi. I want to get motivated to work out and
burn my belly fat. Advice me.
AIt is a good start that you have realized you need to burn that
belly fat. hat’s the irst step motivation. You need to think of
the health risks associated with excess fat in the body. Get motivated
by the fact that it is very possible to attain the body shape you desire.
Forget the strain you feel and start little by little. You’ll surely wish
you started sooner.
Cover story
ilove Caroline. She is versatile, conident and
a strong woman with great intelligence. She
sees opportunity in almost everything and
grabs it without giving excuses. What do you
say to an opportunity that seems too good
to be true or seemingly impossible? What
we make out of life has solely and forever
will be our business. his is the story of the
ever-lively radio personality Caroline Sampson.
he girl who made a whole lot for herself
out of a simple job ofer she accepted.
With back-breaking hard work and determination
over the years, she is widely known
for her bubbly personality, apt on-air skills and beauty.
About ten years ago, a group of girls were teasing each
other as to whether they could make it in a beauty pageant
or not. hey were having fun with a mock pageant when it
struck one of them to actually give it a try. his was how
it begun for Caroline Sampson. She had believed in herself
and given it a try. She successfully made it to the inal
ten of the 2005 Miss Malaika Pageant. I vividly remember
watching her then. She was lively and bubbly with a
great personality. hat year a famous rapper from oversees
was to perform in Ghana and Miss Caroline waited
for the event with a gorgeous Beyoncé-ish hairstyle,
the honey hue curls. She looked dazzling to say the least.
She calls it a miracle that she found herself in the radio
industry. “I simply think it is a miracle because working in
the radio industry wasn’t something I thought of or chased
ater”. Perhaps due to her lively personality and great oral
skills, a manager of a radio station called her up immediately
ater her participation in Miss Malaika and ofered her
a job. Here was the case where she hadn’t any background
education in broadcast journalism or radio presenting but
she told herself she could do it and delivered accordingly.
“I found it a great privilege and opportunity to be ofered a
job so I did not want to disappoint”. She determined to face
every challenge and mask every mistake with an air of conidence
which helped her through the early stages of her
career. She has never looked back since then. She worked
with her irst radio station, Atlantis FM, before she moved
on to Y FM where she currently hosts the Ater-drive show
known as the Y Lounge. “I used to host a show that was
about relationships. hat was actually how I started out at
YFm. Now it is an ater drive show which is more general
and aims to relax people in traic or anywhere. here’s
also more good music”. She doubles as a TV presenter on
ETV with the entertainment show EonE. “I am on radio
three exciting hours for four days in a week at Y then on
Fridays, I go to ETV for my other show. Like a true professional
that she is, Caroline has also worked and still
works as a voice-over artiste for brands and networks. she
has also featured in commercials for brands as well. Currently,
she is the brand ambassador for Woodin Textiles.
I consider all these jobs
and treat them with equal
professionalism
“
the hardworking young lady also works as an emcee sometimes, hosting events. “I consider all these jobs and treat them with
equal professionalism”. She does not compromise on any job opportunity that comes her way be it a commercial or a voice-over
job. She holds work ethics in high esteem and believes in being professional about one’s career. “I think it’s about sticking to
the rules and regulations of your work regardless. You can bend the rules a bit but it shouldn’t be too much to the detriment of
the work you are doing. You could be working for someone or for yourself, I still believe that going according to work ethics
is key”. It is interesting to ind out about her interests while growing up. It was in no way related to the radio industry. “I was
interested in architecture back in junior high school. hen in senior high school, I developed more love for reading and social
studies. I discovered there was elective mathematics and my, it was so tough. So I thought that I could do PR as a career for a corporate
institution like a bank. Showbiz wasn’t really something I thought about”. Funny how things change completely as we grow up. She had
envisioned a diferent line of career choice while in school but here she is now. Even joining a beauty pageant that ended up changing
her life around wasn’t on her bucket list while she was growing.he history behind the beauty plus brains is a humble beginning of a
small family of her parents and siblings.
She went to Mfantisman Secondary School in the central region of Ghana where she was efortlessly the entertainment prefect. “I guess
showbiz comes naturally to me. I was performing, dancing and emceeing variety shows then”. She continued her tertiary education at
African University College of Communication, AUCC.
“I however didn’t complete my tertiary education because I got pregnant. I suppose this is not much of something new”. She speaks
highly of her son who is the dearest apple of her eye. She also expressed so much gratitude to her mother for standing by her always. It
is refreshing to note that she is living life full of no regrets.
“I am used to social media bullies who attack me because
I am a single mother”. She speaks proudly of her
single motherhood and shows no regrets. She endeavours
to be both mother and father to her little son. With
the help of her mother she is just on the right track.
On people who attack me and perceive me to be a sort
of person I am not, I am not disturbed because they
obviously do not matter. hey do not because they are
hiding behind social media accounts to say whatever
they deem it. his is just one of the few challenges I
encounter as a female radio personality in this country.
On a regular day, she hardly encounters any challenges
on air. Even though she still hasn’t any formal
education in broadcast journalism she was sure to
take important tips from professional radio personalities
who were already in the industry to help her
overcome slight technical challenges. She speaks
about some personalities she admires in their line
of work but was emphatic about not emulating their
style in particular because she wanted to be herself
and hone her talents in her own style. She says,
“Personally, I never really look at other people, funny
enough, I just do my own thing. Nobody in particular
I would say but there are some people I admire
in the radio industry. here was a time I paid some
attention to some people. With the ladies, there’s Jessica
of Citi FM, Jeremie now with Live FM and Doreen
Andoh of Joy FM. Bola Ray and Abeiku Santana
also standout for me with the quality of their work”.
With other challenges such as diicult callers, she
handles them just as professionally. “I haven’t been
abused on-air before, perhaps just on social media,
but I do not oten interact with people in phone-in
sessions so I hardly come into contact with diicult
callers”. She joked about being a diicult person herself
and just assumes a position of control in case
of any such situation. She simply cuts the caller of.
Challenges with colleagues at work is very rare but
she believes in ironing out issues with her co-workers
head on so as not to carry grudges with anybody.
he concern of radio personalities also having their
down moments was expressed by the beautiful Caroline.
She opined about the fact that there are times
where she has had to deal with sad times by way of
suppressing her emotions in other to be able to give
her audience the best she can. All in the name of
sheer love and passion for her job, she puts aside her
not-so-cheerful mood at a point in order to listen
to others while she wished others will listen to her.
“I will like to go as far as it gets. his is something I
do for a living and something I love so I will like to
do it till I can’t do it anymore”. Positively, she is more
than willing to do anything to take her career to the
greatest heights possible. She embodies hard work,
determination and conidence and she deinitely can
overcome every single challenge that gets thrown her
way. We can’t but agree with the simple three words
she chose to describe her personality. “Beautiful,
conident and hardworking”. She is indeed a positive
role model for all your people out there. “I’ll say they
should take themselves seriously and be serious about
whatever they want to achieve. Even if they have their
set-up they have to be serious about it. hey should
also be hardworking and I believe with that they
would go higher”. She put her words of advice in these
simple words to her fans and followers out there.
I am very interested in living a positive legacy. I
practically live for that. It is my joy to be acknowledged
for the little things I did to contribute to
the industry someday. I wish my name comes up
someday when radio personalities who made a difference
are being mentioned in a positive light.

Kalybos starred in a short movie “Kalybos in
(Ahuof3 Patri).
Also starring in the movie is Christabel Ekeh,
David Dontoh, Mikki Osei Berko, Nikki Samonas,
The movie was directed by Koi Asamoah and
was shot at locations in China and Ghana.
“I was htherto working behind the
CM: Who is kalybos?
KALYBOS: Kalybos is comedic actor. He stars in a mini television series
titled ‘Boys Kasa’. He is friendly, shy and very ambitious.
CM: How did you come across the name ‘kalybos’?
KALYBOS: he name came along with the television series. We had to
get a name for the character. “kaly” is the initials of the names of my
sisters and mine, that is, Kwaku Asante and that of my sisters which are
Lady and Yaa. We added ‘boss’ to complete the name of the character. We
then omitted an ‘S’ to make it unique. Like I have always joked ‘he only
boss with one S’
CM: How did you start acting and becoming a comedeian?
KALYBOS: It all started in NAFTI where I met a producer/director
known as Koi Asamoah. We shot documentaries and other skits and
sketches and short ilms that even entered into competitions. He came
up with the idea of shooting a comedy skit. We had a guy who would
play the main role in mind but he didn’t show up and that was when he
approached me to do it. I was hitherto working behind the scenes as the
camera technician. he irst skit we shot was titled ‘Camry’. He urged
me to do it and he really took his time to bring out the acting prowess I
didn’t know I had.
CM: Before this, you never thought of acting as a career?
KALYBOS: Never, I was always behind the scenes.
CM: How would you describe the kind of comedy you do?
KALYBOS: I like to term it comic acting. here are many types of comedy
but basically, I do comic acting.
CM: Was it diicult starting the skits?
KALYBOS: It was, actually. It took the constant work of the director to
get that part of me out. he energy and charisma I exude on stage, the
director does a great job in bringing it out. I am naturally a very very shy
person, much to a lot of people’s disbelief.
CM: As a comedian, what makes you laugh?
KALYBOS: I ind humour in everything! I don’t need a really good joke
“
to make me laugh. My mood also determines my humour. When I am
in a very happy mood I laugh at almost everything. I guess I just have a
very great sense of humour.
CM: So, tell us. What is the funniest moment in your life?
KALYBOS: (Laughs) here is one actually. In junior high school, a colleague
of mine, we went into a ight and I really beat him up. I met him
one day during the latter part of my junior high school days when I was
going to church. He said, “do you remember you beat me some time
ago”? Before I could gather my thoughts he slapped me in front of the
whole congregation. I laughed at irst and cried a little later. It wasn’t
funny at all but I laughed. I however, cried because it was very humiliating.
he whole thing was really funny to me.
CM: Before NAFTI or acting what was your dream?
KALYBOS: I think I have always been inclined to the arts. I am professionally
a cinematographer and I have not deviated from that. I have
worked with Sparrow Productions’ Shirley Frimpong-Manso; I assisted
my boss, John Passah too. I also did a lot of work with Koi Asamoah
of Kofas Media. I worked with the likes of Frank Rajah, Duncan Williams
and some others. his has helped put me a step ahead of what I’m
doing now.
CM: Who is your favourite comedian?
KALYBOS: Globally, I love Kevin Hart because of his energy and Tony
Woods. In Africa I love basket mouth and I go die. I also like funny face
because he is a natural. hey are all really interesting, funny characters
and very good at their jobs. DKB and David Oscar are good too. I like
KSM very much; he is the pillar of comedy in Ghana.
CM: Do you see yourself, in the next few years, becoming more than
a household name?
KALYBOS: I am not limiting myself. I learn every day to enrich my act.
I am growing. If Ghanaians think I am good enough to be a household
name I am grateful. I believe the others are doing a good job as well in
their respective ields, be it movies or stand-up comedy.
CM: Before fame and ater fame. How has life been?
KALYBOS: Before fame I bought the same waakye and ater fame I still
buy that same waakye. (Laughs). Simply, it hasn’t really changed much.
People try to dictate how to live your life even to the point of what and
where to eat. I don’t believe in that. I am pretty much the same person
before I became quite known.
CM: How do people treat you in real life? Do they take you serious
enough?
KALYBOS: People relate more to the kalybos character. hey meet me
and want a hug or want me to make them laugh, even in public. hey
see me as the Kalybos character most of the time.
CM: Anybody that has impacted on you in the entertainment industry?
KALYBOS: Koi Asamoah who he is a source of my motivation, the entire
brain behind everything. he ideas and entire concept of ‘Boys Kasa’
is from him. Mr John Passah, a renowned cinematographer in Ghana is
also another great man.I am grateful to them.
CM: Do you have any mentors?
KALYBOS: Johnny Depp. I really love his acting skills, gestures and delivery.
I pick bits and pieces from his style to help in the way I act those
comic roles. Koi Asamoah is also someone I look up to. My father is
also a man who has mentored me over the years. Alluding to an Akan
proverb, I think I inherited the funny bone from my father. We are very
alike in that way.
CM: Where do you see yourself in the next ive years?
KALYBOS: America or Dubai. (Laughs). I see the brand kalybos being
an international brand in the near future. I know it would take
sometime but I see kalybos doing greater things in future. I am working
hard on projects and I believe God would see me through with all
the resources I would need.
CM: Any collaboration with international comedians?
KALYBOS: Kansiime Anne from Uganda. hey are also popular in
their country for short comic skits. She is also very popular on You-
Tube.We hope to work with more international acts. Other things I
am working on are bringing a full movie that shows the misadventures
of Kalybos. Fans should look out for that. We recently did the
“Kalybos in China” Movie and there’s more.
CM: You are now the of Face of Airtel, how did that happen?
KALYBOS: Basically, the good work we have been doing shined
through. hey gave us a call saying they had a package for us. hey
had followed our gradual progress and were willing to work with us.
CM: Do you have a crush on any celebrity?
KALYBOS: I do not have a crush on any celebrity but I admire a lot
of them. John Dumelo, Majid Michel, funny face, Yvonne Nelson and
Nadia Buari are some of the celebs I admire. I also admire Ahuofe
Patricia a lot.
CM: Are you dating? Who is the lucky lady? I am sure the ladies
want to know.
KALYBOS: I have someone in mind. I know what you are thinking;
this person is not Ahuofe Patricia. She is a great girl but we are just
friends T
colour. You can help them pick a collection that can go with any shirt colour for a change.
Consider beige, mauve, pale pink and sandy coloured ties and also some abstract patterns
that would go with any outit. Ties made of our own African prints are also an exciting choice.
You need to throw out
your undergarments
whenever they are
greyed, ripped, stained
or worn out to the
thread
Men
For most men, the mention of ‘underwear
etiquette’ would induce a scof.
Most men are more likely to don whatever
they ind comfortable. A few would
take into consideration the fact that they
may be caught in an undesirable situation
where they have to part with their
pants or shorts. Believe it or not guys,
there is more to just wearing any underwear
at any time. And yes, there is such
a thing as “Underwear Etiquette”. Don’t
pay it down.Whether it is boxers, boxer
briefs, trunks, briefs or low-cuts; wearing,
washing and repeating isn’t the only
routine you should care for. I believe a
lot of modern men nowadays are conscious
of how they choose and maintain
their underwear. Primarily, underwear
should always be clean and fresh. A keen
efort should be made to avoid wearing
wet underwear. It is ideal to change your
boxers or briefs as frequently as possible.
You want to try as much as possible to
change to new underwear during midday
if your work induces a lot of sweat. his is
good because you are rid of bacteria and
unpleasant smell. It is adorable to grow
sentimentally attached to underwear given
to you by a loved one but you can only
go too far. You need to throw out that
undergarment that has images of your
favourite cartoon character on it! hat
are still holding on to it for sentimental
reasons. You need to throw out your undergarments
whenever they are greyed,
ripped, stained or worn out to the thread.
Generally, once they are no more presentable
and unsightly, you need to let them
go. Give them graceful retirement. If possible,
it is ideal to get a fresh set ater three
months. Wearing underwear for working
out is also a subject worth broaching. It is
very advisable to avoid the same undergarment
if it has been used working out.
It has to be washed and dried before it is
used again. his would prevent a whole lot
of bacterial infections in the crotch area.
With men, the issue of undergarments is
mostly about choice and occasion. Also,
the issue of comfort is key. Lately, fashion
is also a factor some men consider when
choosing their underwear. Going commando
which is also known as free-balling
is also a choice some men make for various
reasons. Mostly, because of the easy-breezy
feel that is experienced with going commando.
Despite the fact that your crotch
proile would be full on display depending
on your pair of pants, the underwear-free
mode is very comfortable. For instance,
they are perfect when you’re in your pyjamas.
Going free-balling is a no no for a hot
or busy day. For instance, it is not advisable
to go commando when you would be
busting some moves at a party. he sweat
would make it a very unpleasant view to
behold. For comfort, a lot of men go in for
the boxer shorts which are largely made of
cotton. hese are ideal because of the free
air room men get when in boxer shorts. Its
loose itting style help ensure enough room
for air. hey can also be a playful choice as
they now come in diferent colours and
patterns for men who want to explore with
fashion. Boxer shorts can be worn by guys
almost everywhere but are not advisable
for working out. Its loose itting style may
interfere with your comfort. You can opt
for spandex trunks that are lexible and
supportive for working out. Unlike
briefs, the boxer shorts are a good
choice for men who are concerned
about the function of their scrotums,
that is, to produce sperms. he hanging
loose of the scrotal sac is ideal for
sperm production due to its detachment
from the body which is relatively
too warm and not a conducive area
for the production of sperms.Briefs are
probably the most traditional form of
undergarments for men. hey are also
comfortable depending on how snug
or loose they are. hey are also mostly
made of cotton and unlike boxer shorts,
they provide support rather than room
space for air. Most men choose briefs
because of the support it gives them.
his is in light of being modest; that is,
an efort to avert attention from their
crotch area as it is considered immodest
to draw attention to your crotch.
Fashion wise, briefs are recently being
considered as not so fashionable. hey
are tagged as old and unsexy. A variety
of briefs that have hit the market in recent
years is the low-cuts. Low-cuts are
designed in a more appealing way. Men
with a fashion edge and a little adventure
would go in for the low-cut briefs.
hey are super tight and are cut lower
than the normal briefs. A lot of modern
men prefer them to other undergarment
because of the support it gives and
also because of the trend of pants they
wear. Briefs, however, are said to hinder
the adequate production of sperms
because the scrotal sac is pressed close
to the warm body which isn’t optimum
for sperm production. Another
variety of men’s undergarments that
have been popular in the market is the
boxer briefs. hey are the trendiest
and most fashionable choice-perhaps
made famous by David Beckham and
Christiano Ronaldo. hey are similar
to boxers but in a tighter form. Also,
they are fashion-forward as they are
available in various colours and designs
Choose natural oils like coconut, jojoba, olive, or castor for your hair. Aloe Vera also makes your hair shiny and smoother. Excessive
shared their view on this new trend. Majority of the women opined that keeping a short or natural hair was the best to maintain for them. hey
CLOTHING CARE
Why you must read the label
You rush to the salon late ater work but the already tired beautician still couldn’t inish ixing your hair. You had to go to
the salon the following morning to inish it up. hen you rush to the mall to buy that dress. he dress you are convinced
is the one. he one that will surely turn heads and get you blushing. You realized then momentarily that you are a few tens
short. Your friend had called that morning, desperate, for some cash. “Hello sissy, I have to honour a friend’s wedding
invitation. Can I borrow some money?” With that your GH¢250 was reduced to GH¢180. You had to race to the bank or
the ATM. Moments later, you are happy things are going well until you burn the dress. You wallow in dismay as silly tears
streak your cheeks. “What in the world happened?” hen it hit you. he part of the dress that was burnt was made of spandex fabric and
you should have pressed with low or shouldn’t have at all. You see hope as you tear open your entire closet of clothes. Behold! You see a
beautiful white dress you haven’t worn in a long time. To your utter disbelief you ind out the dress doesn’t it you perfectly. “What can I
do?” You ask yourself. You can spruce it up with an African print fabric and there’s a very good tailor across the street. Wait, you are back
within moments? Yes, you forgot the fabric out of excitement. he day isn’t going well. You tease yourself sheepishly. “Maybe I let this event
go and sleep the day away.”
I have experienced this before and I guess you have also. he moment when that sleek dress is what you just can’t let go, the moment when
you haven’t a spare dress and you ruined the initial one. I have noticed it is better to plan days ahead and always have a back up. Most importantly
you need to know the dress and the kind of fabric it’s made of in order to treat it with extra care. Do you pay attention to every detail
on the label of the dress? Mostly, we just check out the size and the designer and we are good go. We also end up washing the clothes anyhow
and running it. We sometimes bleach it, wash it with other clothes and ruin it original color. To avoid all these stressors when next you are
headed for an event, be sure to plan, get a back up and most importantly, pay attention to details of the fabric to avoid ruining your day.
Business
To start a sustainable and successful business, you must have a good social and
moral conduct. It is also important to have a good relationship with the people
around you and you must love the work you do with passion. his will enable you
to face challenges along the way.
CM: What should one consider when thinking of starting a business. Is it money?
P.A: Yes! You need money to start up a business. But it is very important to have passion for whatever business you want to set
up. In my case, it was out of frustration. You could even start a business you don’t have passion for, but with time, you develop
interest for it.
herefore, the most important thing is having the zeal to do it. hen you can go in search for capital.
CM: Is it advisable to go for a loan as a starter?
P.A: No! It is not. However, you have to start at a smaller pace because, you would not know the outcome. here are chances of
not being able to pay back the loan. It is advisable to seek for support from friends and family. You must be a person of principle
before you could attract that kind of support from friends and family. You have to prove yourself very worthy of that favor.
CM: Is it advisable to start with an oice?
P.A: Yes. It’s alright to have an oice but if you don’t, that shouldn’t stop you. I started business in my car. I was selling anything
I could lay my hands on.
CM: Oh! So that was a form of ‘kpakpakpa‘ movement?
P.A: Yes, it was but not the criminal form of ‘kpakpakpa’. As a distributor, you buy goods and ix a margin on it and sell. You
don’t need an oice to start. You only need a reference point to facilitate the low of your business.
CM: What are some of the traits a starter must have to be successful?
P.A: his is a good question. To start a sustainable and successful business, you must have a good social and moral conduct.
It is also important to have a good relationship with the people around you and you must love the work you do with passion.
his will enable you to face challenges along the way. I know someone who started raring snail and then she stopped because
she was not passionate about it.
CM: What are some of the things to consider when employing people to work with?
P.A: Partnership does not sell here in Ghana. It is easy to ind good partners and friends when the going is good. It is advisable
to start with a small team as a starter. I started Unique Trust with 3 people. All you have to consider is the human behavior.
he trust word must always be present.
CM: What are some of the challenges business starters face here in Ghana?
P.A: here are two major problems we face as a developing country: We do not even know the actual size of the consumer
market. We know nothing about our immigration. In fact, we are in complete corrupt system. he necessary
institutions that are needed to make the low of business easy isn’t available. here is rampant fuel shortage
and no electricity. Meanwhile, we need all these to facilitate a smooth business. Also some individuals of this
country especially those who own businesses have very bad attitude as to how they treat their subordinates. It is very
important to be known for your business, for me, Prince Koi…I am known because of UT. UT is doing a lot for people
including myself. If you have a business and you decide to be on top and untouchable, you would kill your business.
CM: What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs?
P.A: hey must irst have the self-discipline and acknowledge the fact that the company is not for an individual. hey must
be creative and create things that are not in existence, necessity is the mother of all invention. And love what you do.
Start at a smaller pace and grow the business
A Billion Dollars On hair!
To say 1.1 billion is a lot of money is an understatement. It is whole lot of
fortune. It is the kind of money a country can thrive on! Imagine this
kind of money being spent on something seemingly trivial. Let’s say
your hair. Yes, all that money being spent on hairdo. My jaw literally
dropped when I read somewhere that a market research conducted by
Euromonitor International revealed that women in some part of Africa
spent over a billion dollars on their hair care products last year. A part of me was
shocked. All that money on hair? Another part of me was impressed. It was refreshing
to know that we women of Africa spend good money to beautify ourselves. he images
of all the glossy locks of hair of celebrities at events came rushing to mind.
It was no joke when they said the hair makes a woman beautiful. It’s no secret that the hair care industry has experienced a boom over the
past few years with very expensive but quality hair extensions. he likes of Brazilian, Peruvian and Indian hair come in diferent sizes and
colour and are very highly prices. hey range from a whooping three hundred to a thousand Ghana cedis. I laughed when a friend made a
joke about robbers having an eye for these weaves. It was good business because it could be reused ater many times. Not to talk of the money
spent to get it ixed and maintained. Truly, it makes women adorable, with its jet black, brown or blond hue. he hair care industry must
have been smiling all the way to the bank last year. With trends such as the braids, the short bob cut, the faux locks and even the styling of
the natural kinky African hair that women all over Africa have rocked. he market has also been swarmed with countless hair products to
it every pocket and woman, ranging from hair food to dyes. he billboards, TV and magazine ads, graced with models with resplendent hair
also contribute to the boost in hair trends. Clearly, hair care for women in Africa and all over the world is not a subject to be compromised.T
Wedding
leter
I believe having a grand wedding
should be a matter of choice
Iopened my twitter account out of boredom one
evening. Once again, twitter proved to be one of
the most if not the most interactive social network
yet. he topics that trend for discussion
always surprise me. his time round, it was weddings.
It was amazing to see that both the ladies
and gents were all expressing their views on weddings
today. heir main focus was how preposterously
expensive wedding have become.
Wedding ceremonies have evolved greatly over
the years. he past few years have seen near perfect
weddings, be it from celebrities, the rich or
even the average person. Scanning through the
tweets, I realised it was an established fact that
ladies, most of them, wanted a dream wedding.
A white wedding with lashy cars, lawless make
up, an amazing cake, a grand reception, a diamond
ring and of course the perfect dress. As if
the mind-numbing stress involved in this is not
enough, it all sums up to a colossal amount that
would make you quiver with shock inwardly.
Clichéd as it may sound; it was the men on my
timeline who were opposing this settlement.
hough they also wanted an honourable wedding,
they wanted to do without the little details
that seem to escalate the cost. heir tweets looded
in as much as the ladies’ and it suggested that
the ladies should take a reality check. We can’t
all have celebrity weddings that seem to involve
expensive photography and details as little as china!
he existence of wedding planners was also
mentioned. For those who think you need to be
relaxed on your big day, wedding planners were
their resort regardless of how high they came.
hey sure make a dream wedding a lot easier
to achieve but make it a lot more exorbitant to
bear. I could not tweet my opinion as the back
and forth was all so interesting. I believe having a
grand wedding should be a matter of choice. You
have every right to make your wedding a splash
because it’s a once in a lifetime event, hopefully.
hat can be achieved only if you have the means. I
believe in couples communicating and coming to
an agreement on the type of wedding they want
with regards to their inancial strength. Making
compromises that it your choice is the irst step
towards a successful and beautiful wedding. If
you can’t wait till you can aford, you might as
well take a moment to make what you can aford
a memorable one.
You should be happy on your wedding day and
not glum because of wrong inancial choices that
would come back to bite you in the near future.
Here’s a tip you can focus on and help emphasize
some aspects of the whole event instead of the
whole thing. For instance, a breath-taking décor
at the reception would make up for a not-so-great
cake. Also, a great catering service can make your
wedding memorable instead of unnecessary wedding
souvenirs. Your guests would go on and on
about how delicious the foods were and forget
about the lack lustre of the party favours. What
do you know, they may bag some home! Remember,
we can’t have it all. Choose and make
some compromises and have a wonderful and
stress-free wedding next year. T
Addressing the challenge of youth unemployment
remains a major nightmare to many governments.
According to the International Labour
Organization (ILO) some 73.8 million youth
are unemployed globally. he ILO reckons that the slowdown
in economic activity is likely to push another half-amillion
youth into unemployment this year. In many countries,
the phenomenon of youth unemployment is not just
a socio-economic problem but, also a security threat. In
its 2004 report titled: “A More Secure World: Our Shared
Responsibility”, the United Nations wondered, “How have
we let what should be our greatest asset, youth, become
a threat to our security?” he same report revealed that
youth unemployment levels in the West African sub-region
are amongst the world’s highest, standing at 18.1% in 2005.
Obviously, the youth unemployment problem is a hydra-headed
one that requires a concerted efort to address
it. It is estimated that, there are about 230,000 new entrants
into Ghana’s labour market every year. he causes of unemployment
in Ghana can be attributed to a combination of
factors. One such problem is lack of education. According
to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, while some
43 percent of the youth in rural areas are illiterates, only 16
percent of their counterparts in urban areas are illiterates.
Lack of education limits their opportunity to gain employment
and undertake decent work. Other factors include
lack of skills and labour market experience among the
youth. As a matter of fact, the growing numbers of graduates
cannot be absorbed by the public sector. he private
sector also faces challenges that hamper its ability to employ
more unemployed youth. Besides, Ghana’s educational
system prepares students to be job-seekers other than
entrepreneurs. he fact that the skill sets of graduates from
our educational system do not meet the demands of industries
remains a major challenge that must be addressed.
As part of its strategy to address the youth unemployment
problem, the Government of Ghana launched a
programme dubbed “Youth Enterprise Support (YES)”
initiative in August last year. According to government,
the YES initiative has been designed to help young entrepreneurs
turn their ideas into thriving business enterprises.
he programme, which is operating under the oice
of the President, is expected to draw support from other
Ministries, Departments and Agencies such as the Ministries
of Youth & Sports, Trade & Industry and Finance as
well as National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI)
and the National Youth Authority (NYA). he programme
targets aspiring young Ghanaian entrepreneurs aged
between 18 to 35 years, with good business ideas looking
for inancial support and/or expert advice to bring
their ideas to life. he initiative is also intended to support
young entrepreneurs to learn how to start and grow
their businesses and also overcome related challenges.
he launch of the YES initiative was however greeted
with mixed feelings. While a section of the Ghanaian
public including young entrepreneurs considered the
initiative laudable, others doubted the success of the programme
and heavily criticized same citing the challenges
that plagued the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial
Development Agency (GYEEDA) as a case in
point. It is unclear whether or not beneiciaries would
be required to pay back monies lent them. Barely two
months ater the launch of the programme, the irst Coordinator
was changed and no reason has been assigned
for this development. Many commentators have also
raised concerns about the need to ensure transparency in
the assessment and selection of prospective beneiciaries.
Even though youth enterprise development is not a panacea
to the youth unemployment problem, it has to be a
crucial component of an overall strategy for tackling the
problem. At the moment, ‘Youth and Entrepreneurship’ is
one of the priority areas in Ghana’s National Youth Policy
AN END TO YOUTH
UNEMPLOYMENT?
he Gh¢10million is a good start. However, with time this
needs to be increased. Managers of the initiative should
therefore consider looking for innovative ways to enhance
the resource base of the initiative. But this will only
work if prospective donors are convinced that adequate
structures are in place to administer the resources well.
Even though the National Youth Authority is acknowledged as a partner in
managing YES it is not clear whether the YES emanates from the policy or it is
just an ad-hoc measure to help tackle youth unemployment just as how GY-
EEDA started. hat notwithstanding, many experts and reputable international
organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme,
the World Bank and the International Labour Organization recognize the importance
of youth enterprise development as key to helping address the youth
unemployment problem and for this reason, they have partnered and continue
to partner several governments to promote youth enterprise development.
One of the countries promoting aggressive youth enterprise development
is Kenya. hrough its Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF), over
157,000 youth enterprises have beneitted from inancial support. As at 2013,
the YEDF trained over 200,000 young entrepreneurs, supported young Kenyans
to take up jobs overseas through the Youth Employment Scheme Abroad
(YESA) programme and helped created over 300,000 jobs in the past ive years.
Again, Uganda’s Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) established in 1995,
is also a public funded programme which has succeeded in imparting business
skills to more than 4,000 young people and provided credit to 1,812 others.
From the successes chalked in these countries, I have no doubt that the YES initiative
if properly managed will help achieve its objectives of alleviating the youth
unemployment conundrum. One
of the issues the management of
the programme should consider
as critical in its enterprise is to ensure
equity, access, capacity building
and involvement of the youth
in the social audits of the fund.
Educational institutions for this purpose
must partner with Yes to promote
entrepreneurship culture among
the youth. he YES initiative must
research on the key impediments in
the business environment that militate
against the progress of young
entrepreneurs and reform them.
Finally, while I think this initiative
is laudable and should therefore be
supported by all and sundry to ensure
its success, it is my view that since
youth enterprise development is not
the panacea to the youth unemployment
problem, it is important to put
in place the appropriate policy framework
to comprehensively address the
problem. Such a policy should pay serious
attention to education and skills
training for the youth taking cognizance
of the demands of industry
and the provision of career counseling
and support services to students.
