one of our favorite love stories - Wuthering Heights,
and journey through storms and in hot air balloons
In amongst the globe-trotting, there are plenty of
home-grown attractions too, including Victorian
a new play by Andrea James that celebrates our
indigenous women and their connections to country
and each other.
Extinction, by Helpmann award winning playwright
Hannie Rayson (Hotel Sorrento, Life After George)
GPAC before travelling to the Canberra Theatre
21-year-old Leo rocks up unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-year-old Jewish grandmother Vera. Having
broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions asked. But
Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily.
As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising parallel between these two
generations in this emotionally compelling drama. With disarming frankness and surprising candour, the two negotiate social
potholes and trace emotional fault lines that link them to a painful family history.
From one of America’s brightest playwrights, this compassionate and unsentimental play explores the funny, frustrating, and
ultimately life-changing relationship between a grandson learning to face his life, and a grandmother who is
starting to forget hers.
Tennessee Williams was one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. The Glass Menagerie is his most
loved play. Put in the hands of Belvoir Artistic Director Eamon Flack, this production delivers on every count – winning Best
Play and Best Actress at the 2015 Helpmann Awards.
A beautiful, slightly haunting play, The Glass Menagerie follows a family as it falls apart along with the dreams that had given
them some fragmented substance. Amanda Wingfield is a single mother played by the great Pamela Rabe. Her son Tom,
(Luke Mullins) is an aspiring poet who works in a warehouse, her daughter Laura is studying to become a secretary. They live
in a small apartment pent up with fantasies and urges, rage and wounded tenderness. It is not a magnificent existence, but
each has one true idea for a better life. Enter the Gentleman Caller…
The Glass Menagerie is touching, depicting how change affects the individual (as well as the group), even as it
rips them asunder.
The tiger quoll once ruled the dense Otway forest but is now almost extinct. A wild, rainy night, a twist of fate and an injured
tiger quoll bring together a passionate environmentalist and an unlikely Good Samaritan. Both are hell-bent on saving the
species, but intentions are murky. What will be compromised in the quest to save the quoll? Nothing is black and white in
this intriguing story about love, sex, money and power played out under the shadow of global warming.
Extinction is a timely and intelligent new Australian play by Helpmann award winning playwright and screenwriter Hannie
Rayson (Hotel Sorrento, Life After George), directed by acclaimed film director and producer Nadia Tass (Malcolm, Matching
Jack). It delves deep into the heart of our own morals, choices and tightly-held convictions. Extinction wraps an important
Six Aboriginal Women. On Country. Their attempts to connect with land and each other; thwarted by arguments about
identity, beauty, boyfriends and a cyber invasion by race hate bloggers. Guided by their Auntie/Sister/Cousin Neecy, the
women eventually discover that this isn’t any old camping trip and that their connection to country and each other runs
deeper than they could ever have imagined.
Written and directed by Yorta Yorta/Kurnai woman Andrea James, Winyanboga Yurringa is inspired by Hyllus Maris and
Sonia Borg’s iconic Women of the Sun and the provocative imagery of Wathaurong artist Bindi Cole.
True, poetic, sometimes crude and often humorous; Winyanboga Yurringa takes the intergenerational pulse of Aboriginal
women today to expose the complexity and beauty of women’s business and our enduring connection to country.
Starring Ian Stenlake like you’ve never seen him before, buckle up as Around The World In 80 Days takes you on a
high speed transcontinental race against the clock! This is a joyfully frenetic whirlwind of a show, full of Victorian
invention and daring deeds.
Three actors portray a cast of thousands in this madcap adaptation of Jules Verne’s globetrotting classic, bringing to
life sea storms, police chases and elephant rides! The story begins with a bank robbery by a mysterious figure. Then
we are introduced to Phileas Fogg, honest-looking, well-turned out and with good teeth who proclaims before his
fellow members of a London gentleman’s club that he can circumnavigate the globe in a mere 80 days. He goes
forth on his adventure accompanied by his newly-acquired valet, Mr Passepartout. Hot in their pursuit is Detective
Fix of Scotland Yard, who thinks that Fogg is the man who robbed the bank. This mad-cap adventure quickly moves
along on a succession of locomotives, steamers and hilarity.
With a style that incorporates classic farce, theatrical storytelling and complete silliness, combined with the great
age of industrial invention, Around The World In 80 Days produces a piece of theatre that will have you crying with
laughter as you travel the world.
Amir is an American living the American Dream. On track to make partner in his law firm, he lives with his artist wife Emily in
their spacious Upper East Side apartment, where occasionally they’ll throw a dinner party. Tonight’s guests are Jory, a work
colleague, and her husband, Isaac, an art dealer, and, with so much in common, the conversation flows easily. Then, as it
inevitably does in today’s conflicted America, the topic turns to race, religion and identity. Now, how quickly things fall apart.
Intense and absorbing with the arc of classic tragedy, Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama has a hero who believes he
has flown too high to ever fall to earth. Sensationally proving Chekhov’s observation that lives can be destroyed during an
event as mundane as a dinner party.
As you’re aware, at GPAC we present many, many shows.
It’s an utter delight. But there are other programs that take
place outside the public eye that we are also very proud of.
These programs ensure our region’s children can be part of
the performing arts. For some the path is easy, particularly
if they have an inspirational teacher, family member or
mentor who can help them find their way.
But for many, finding that path and following it is difficult.
Too many children in the region have their choices shaped
by social and financial disadvantage. Many are in schools
with limited funding, poor facilities and over-stretched
resources, with limited access to extra programs or
opportunities. There is no Auskick in the arts.
GPAC recently had the opportunity to work with Deborah
Cheetham - Yorta Yorta soprano, composer and educator
- and indigenous children from the region. They came
from schools in the greater Geelong area to participate
in a program called Short Black Opera. Each day as they
sang they grew taller. After a week of workshops they
performed a brilliant Short Black Opera on stage before
family and peers. Some of the children have gone on to
join Deborah’s main choir.
We want to offer more of these opportunities and to
encourage more children to be part of them. This is why
we have developed Arts for Life, the GPAC Endowment
Fund - to ensure GPAC remains a centre where our
children can experience performing arts and where local
emerging artists are nurtured.
Funds raised through Arts for Life support educational
programs, cultural activities, and access for schools and
community groups. Making a donation to Arts for Life
can help us build a circle of strength around incredible
programs such as Short Black Opera at GPAC.
HOW TO SHOW YOUR
SUPPORT
Arts for Life aims to raise
$10 million to be built up
over 10 years. There are
three principal ways to
make a donation to
the fund:
1. Regular Giving
Every donation received
assists GPAC in the delivery
of its annual artistic
program. All donations
over $2 are tax deductible.
2. One Off Gift
Once-off significant
donations could be in cash,
a gift of shares, proceeds
from a life insurance policy,
or a realisable asset. These
significant donations could
also be made as a bequest.
3. A Bequest
If, once you have
remembered your
family, you also have the
capacity to invest in your
community then a bequest
(a provision in your will)
is the perfect legacy to
acknowledge the pleasure
you have received from
your involvement with
GPAC over the years.
Such a bequest would
normally take the form
of a nominated dollar
amount or as a percentage
of your estate. This is a
very personal decision
and should only be made
after discussion with those
assisting you with the
drafting of your will.
