A TRUE STORY<br />

My mom yelled my name. What did I do? As I thought<br />

what I could have done, I put my phone in my pocket<br />

and ran to my parents’ room.<br />

"Can you write down all the classes you took? I need<br />

them for your transcript." My mother was standing at<br />

her laptop and typing away like a mad person.<br />

"Yes ma'am," I answered, and walked back to my<br />

bedroom.<br />

I sat down on my bed, found a notebook, and scribbled<br />

down my classes. Then I headed back to my room.<br />

I reached for my phone charger which was lying next<br />

to an outlet. As I picked it up, my phone wasn't<br />

attached.<br />

I looked at my charging station that doubles as an<br />

alarm clock.<br />

It wasn't there either.<br />

I looked at my bed.<br />

I moved my pillows.<br />

I moved my blankets.<br />

I looked under my bed.<br />

I looked on my widow seat.<br />

And then I felt a buzz.<br />

I felt a buzz again . . . and then checked my back pocket.<br />

My screen read:<br />

Sigh.<br />

Don’t ask.<br />

recipe<br />

PEANUT BUTTER CUP COOKIES<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour<br />

½ teaspoon salt<br />

1 teaspoon baking soda<br />

½ cup butter, softened<br />

½ cup white sugar<br />

½ cup peanut butter<br />

½ cup packed brown sugar<br />

1 egg, beaten<br />

1 teaspoon vanilla extract<br />

2 tablespoons milk<br />

40 miniature chocolate covered peanut butter<br />

cups, unwrapped<br />

DIRECTIONS<br />

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).<br />

Sift together the flour, salt and baking soda; set<br />

aside.<br />

2. Cream together the butter, sugar, peanut<br />

butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in the<br />

egg, vanilla and milk.<br />

3. Add the flour mixture; mix well. Shape into 40<br />

balls and place each into an ungreased mini<br />

muffin pan.<br />

4. Bake at 375 degrees for about 8 minutes.<br />

Remove from oven and immediately press a mini<br />

peanut butter cup into each ball. Cool and<br />

carefully remove from pan.<br />

Prep time: 25 minutes<br />

Cook time: 10 minutes<br />

Ready in: 1 hour 25 minutes <br />

BOYFRIENDS AREN’T IDOLS<br />

Author's Note: I cannot say that I have this lesson<br />

completely learned. It is a daily struggle to give your<br />

heart to God—a daily submission. I also must say that<br />

this idea was not entirely my own, but the story is<br />

completely mine.<br />

Lisa squealed as another text from her crush, Kevin,<br />

popped up on the screen. When she saw what it said,<br />

she emitted another squeal. Her best friend, Jess,<br />

grinned at her across the room.<br />

her "Lisa, what's happened? I hardly get to talk<br />

to you at all anymore!"<br />

Lisa shrugged her shoulders and flipped her hair.<br />

"Nothing's happened. I'm still your best friend."<br />

Little by little, Lisa drew away from others and<br />

drew closer to Kevin. Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. He<br />

became her everything. The one person she<br />

wanted to spend her time with. The reason she<br />

woke up. The reason she went around with a<br />

smile on her face. Before, God had been the<br />

reason she woke up, the One she wanted to<br />

spend time with, and the One Who put a smile on<br />

her face.<br />

"What's up?" she asked.<br />

"Kevin just asked me out!" said Lisa, grinning from ear<br />

to ear.<br />

Jess was on the bed next to her in an instant. "Really?"<br />

she asked. "That's great! What are you going to say?"<br />

"I'll have to ask my parents first," said Lisa. She quickly<br />

sent her mom a text asking her mom for permission.<br />

Because her family had known Kevin's for years, her<br />

mom quickly agreed. Lisa then sent Kevin a text,<br />

saying she would love to go out on a date with him.<br />

That was the beginning.<br />

Before long, they were one of the most popular couples<br />

at church. They both had a passion for God that others<br />

envied. Besides just dating, they also would pray<br />

together and serve at church.<br />

Lisa wanted to be sure that she didn't start pushing<br />

others out of her life, so she continued to invest time in<br />

her family and friends. However, as the months, and<br />

then a year, went by, she began spending more and<br />

more time with Kevin, and less time with Jess and her<br />

One day, Lisa confessed to Jess. "I just don't know<br />

what I would do if Kevin broke up with me."<br />

Jess frowned. "Lisa, have you considered that<br />

maybe, possibly, Kevin has become an idol in<br />

FIRST THING FIRST<br />

Hey, girls! My name is Katie Matesevac. In May, I<br />

graduated from high school at Bob Jones<br />

Academy. I’m here to tell you what college life is<br />

like.<br />

Well, so far, the best part of college is that it<br />

hasn’t started yet. My three younger siblings all<br />

had to go back to school on August 17 th . I will<br />

move into the dorms on August 28 th , and classes<br />

start on <strong>Sep</strong>tember 2 nd . So, for now, I get to stay<br />

home and relax (and do my chores) until I move<br />

in.<br />

I didn’t have to move into the dorms, but I chose<br />

to. My family lives less than five miles from Bob<br />

Jones University, where I will be attending, but it<br />

is much simpler for me to live in the dorms. I’ll be<br />

closer to everything, and I won’t have to worry<br />

about commuting back and forth for evening<br />

activities.<br />

I have two roommates, but I’ve only met one of<br />

them. Her name is Kelly. My grandma, who lives<br />

in Pennsylvania, introduced us three years ago.<br />

WE have remained friends, despite only seeing<br />

each other a few times since then. My other<br />

roommate’s name is Jill. I’ve never met her, but<br />

my dad knows her parents from when he was a<br />

young man. I’m sure she’ll be very nice and we’ll<br />

all get along wonderfully.<br />

I was very careful in picking a roommate. My<br />

mom has always said that you should never room<br />

with your best friend, because you’ll hate each<br />

other by the end of the year. So I picked Kelly,<br />

because she was a nice, amiable girl who I knew<br />

moderately well. Every time my grandma sees<br />

me, she tells me how excited Kelly is that she is<br />

my roommate. I already know that we are going<br />

to have a great year.<br />

My biggest struggle this year will<br />

probably be time management.<br />

I have to fit classes, homework, devotions,<br />

church, two jobs, and social time with my<br />

friends into 24 hours a day, or 168 hours in a<br />

week. And I can’t forget that I have to sleep and<br />

eat as well! It will be a challenge, but I have a plan.<br />

My first and primary goal is to do well in my<br />

classes and to work hard at work. My<br />

devotions must be faithfully attended to every<br />

day. After I have completed these responsibilities,<br />

I will enjoy time spent with my friends.<br />

Church will still be very important. I will continue<br />

attending Colonial Hills Baptist Church, where my<br />

parents have taken my siblings and I since we<br />

moved down to South Carolina. Although BJU has<br />

chapel four days a week, church is still very<br />

important because it provides a chance for<br />

fellowship that is not available in chapel.<br />

I will also keep helping out in the two-and-threeyear-old<br />

nursery Sunday School class as I have been<br />

doing. I will also keep singing in the choir and<br />

playing my trumpet in our mini orchestra. These are<br />

the ways in which God has called me to serve, so I<br />

have to keep doing them. God has richly blessed e<br />

with many opportunities to serve Him, and I’m<br />

thankful for them. I look forward to serving the Lord<br />

in any capacity this year.<br />

Please pray for me as I embark on this exciting<br />

segment of my life. I look forward to telling you guys<br />

all about my amazing college experience in later<br />

If you check out our blog often, you know who Robin<br />

Jones Gunn is. A few months ago, we made a review<br />

video on her award-winning book series, featuring<br />

Christy Miller. Now get to know the face behind the<br />

books . . . and find out if a career as an author might<br />

be something you would enjoy.<br />

1. What kinds of books have you written?<br />

I’ve been writing for over 25 years and have written<br />

fiction, non-fiction, devotionals, children’s books and<br />

novellas. Just about a little of everything.<br />

2. What subjects do you have to study to be an<br />

author? It varies, of course, depending on what field<br />

of writing you plan to go into. I took a lot of English<br />

courses as well as Creative Writing courses and<br />

attended conferences on writing. Many of my writer<br />

friends majored in Journalism and found that<br />

prepared them to be able to write short pieces and<br />

articles first. After that they expanded to writing<br />

books.<br />

3. What kinds of stories do you enjoy writing<br />

best? The majority of the 85 books I’ve written are<br />

fiction because I love telling stories. I like writing<br />

about characters who feel like they could be real<br />

people. In the story they are trying to understand<br />

how God is leading them in whatever they are going<br />

through.<br />

4. Please describe a typical day of work<br />

(writing). Every day is different. I’m an early riser so<br />

for many years I’ve gotten up at 3am in order to<br />

write for several hours while my thoughts are fresh<br />

and the house is nice and quiet. Some days I write<br />

on a laptop while sitting outside. Some days I sit at<br />

my desk and work on the main computer. Other<br />

days I’ll go to the beach and sit and write in my<br />

journal.<br />

What made you decide to be a writer? I’ve<br />

always been a storyteller but I didn’t grow up<br />

thinking I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t plan on<br />

being a writer when I was in college. I was more<br />

interested in doing foreign missions work or doing<br />

youth ministry at a church. I married a youth pastor<br />

and started writing for teens. The Christy Miller<br />

series grew from one book into many more and I<br />

continued to write as a result of the interest of the<br />

readers. I honestly don’t think there has ever been a<br />

moment when I decided to be a writer. I just wanted<br />

to follow God and serve Him and this is where He led<br />

me.<br />

6. Where was your first job? I started working at a<br />

Carl’s Jr. fast food restaurant when I was 16. It was<br />

down the street from where we lived and I didn’t<br />

have my driver’s license yet so I walked to work. We<br />

had to wear uniforms with silly hats and I always<br />

walked as fast as I could so that no one I knew from<br />

school would see me.<br />

7. Have you had any interesting things happen<br />

to you while writing stories? Yes. Always. Many<br />

of the interesting life experiences I’ve had ended up<br />

in one of my stories eventually. When I was writing<br />

the Sisterchicks series I was traveling around the<br />

world to all the locations in the books. I went to<br />

Australia, New Zealand, Paris, Venice, England,<br />

Mexico, Finland, Hawaii and the Netherlands. Crazy,<br />

fun things happened on each of those trips. Those<br />

moments ended up in the books and sometimes my<br />

editor would say that we needed to take those parts<br />

out. They were too unbelievable. More than once I<br />

remember telling her, “But they really happened.”<br />

She would say, “Maybe so, but no one will believe it.”<br />

When I was getting ready to do the research for<br />

“Sisterchicks Go Brit” I invited my editor to travel<br />

with me to England. She was thrilled to come along<br />

and yes, crazy, fun things happened. From then on<br />

she let me keep lots of those moments in the books.<br />

8. What is the best thing about being an<br />

author? For me the best thing is being able to do<br />

what I was created to do. I love being able to be<br />

creative and expressive through the stories I write.<br />

9. Do you have to like certain things in order to<br />

do this occupation? I think you have to get used to<br />

a lot of criticism and a lot of people who want to tell<br />

you what to do. You don’t have to like that sort of<br />

constant input but I think you have to really like<br />

what you’re doing and like people in a<br />

compassionate sort of way. Otherwise the many<br />

opinions you hear will make you want to become<br />

more withdrawn.<br />

10. How do you get ideas for new story plot<br />

twists? From life. While I’m writing, I usually don’t<br />

know what’s going to happen next in the story. I<br />

know the characters and the problems they’re<br />

facing. As I write, I think about what I’ve seen in real<br />

life that is similar to what the characters are going<br />

through and as I write the plot twists the ideas<br />

just keep coming.<br />

11. How do you create new characters? I cut<br />

pictures out of magazines and paste them on a<br />

piece of paper in one of my story notebooks. I<br />

introduce myself to the character and ask their<br />

name. It opens up a free flowing sort of<br />

creativity in my imagination. I write down what I<br />

think about that character and in a sense I get to<br />

know them. Sometimes they remind me of<br />

people I know and sometimes they are similar to<br />

someone I’ve seen in a movie.<br />

12. Have you ever earned any awards? If so,<br />

what for? My first awards were from the Biola<br />

Writer’s Conference for an article and one for<br />

the most promising new writer. I won two<br />

awards from the Mount Hermon Christian<br />

Writer’s Conference for poetry and one for being<br />

the writer of the year. I was honored with three<br />

Christy Awards for excellence in Christian<br />

fiction. I received two Reader’s Choice awards<br />

from FHL of the Romance Writers of America.<br />

My favorite award was one that I received in<br />

sixth grade from the Daughters of the American<br />

Revolution. I wrote an essay on “What America<br />

Means to Me” and I won first place. <br />

INGREDIENTS<br />

For the cake:<br />

4 oz. unsweetened baking chocolate, broken<br />

into pieces<br />

4 tbsps. unsalted butter, softened<br />

1 2 / 3 c. boiling water<br />

2 1 / 3 c. unbleached all-purpose flour<br />

2 c. sugar<br />

½ c. sour cream<br />

2 large eggs<br />

2 tsp. baking soda<br />

1 tsp. salt<br />

1 tsp. vanilla extract<br />

For the chocolate fudge:<br />

4 tbsp. unsalted butter<br />

1 ½ c. chocolate chips<br />

¾ c. heavy cream<br />

2 ½ c. sifted confectioners' sugar<br />

1 tsp. vanilla extract<br />

For the filling and decoration:<br />

1 ½ c. raspberry preserves<br />

Fresh raspberries<br />

Heavy cream<br />

INSTRUCTIONS<br />

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter and flour a<br />

13x9x2 inch cake pan.<br />

2. In a bowl, combine the chocolate, butter, and<br />

boiling water and stir until smooth.<br />

3. With an electric mixer set on low speed, add<br />

the remaining ingredients until just combined.<br />

So not overbeat.<br />

4. Pour batter into prepared cake pan and bake<br />

for 40 to 50 minutes or until a cake tester<br />

inserted in the center comes out clean.<br />

5. Let cake cool in the pan on a rack for 10<br />

minutes. Invert the cake onto the rack and let it<br />

cool completely.<br />

6. Cut the cake into cubes and let dry at room<br />

temperature for a few hours.<br />

To make fudge:<br />

1. In a saucepan set over low heat, combine all<br />

the ingredients and whisk until smooth. Keep<br />

warm.<br />

2. In a large bowl, arrange 1 / 3 of the cake cuber<br />

in a layer, spread 1 / 3 of the raspberry preserves<br />

over the cake in a thin layer, and drizzle with 1 / 3<br />

of the fudge.<br />

3. Repeat with 2 more layers of cake, raspberry<br />

preserves, and fudge, decoratively swirling<br />

fudge over final layer.<br />

4. Chill for 4 to 6 hours. Before serving, decorate<br />

the top of the trifle with fresh raspberries. Serve<br />

with a pitcher of heavy cream.<br />

Yield: about 8 to 10 servings<br />

Note: When my sister Lydia made this, she made<br />

a layer cake instead of a trifle. She just spread<br />

the preserves and fudge in between each layer,<br />

and then drizzled the extra fudge over the whole<br />

thing and decorated with fresh raspberries, mint<br />

leaves, and chocolate chips (her own idea). It<br />

turned out amazing! She made it for a family<br />

birthday, so she also wrote Happy Birthday on<br />

white icing in the front. <br />
