Calculating the right fan 

Firstly calculate the volume of the room m³ = (length(m) x width(m) x height(m)) 

Multiply this by the number of air changes per hour, resulting in volume of air required in m³/hr. 

Find the fan that matches the required performance and application.

1 m³/hr = 0.278 L/s = 0.589 CFM

IP ingress 

protection rating 

IP ratings refer to the protection against ingress of foreign bodies and protection against water. 

The first digit of an IP rating refers to the protection against foreign bodies, 0 meaning no protection through to 6 

meaning full protection against ingress of dust. 

The second digit of an IP rating refers to water protection, 0 meaning no protection through to 8 meaning full 

protection against continuous submersion.

1 >50mm 

2 >12.5mm Fingers or similar objects 

3 >2.5mm Tools, thick wires etc.

Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with 

the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact

Immersion

Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water 

under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1m of submersion) 

The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be 

specified by the manufacturer. NOTE; Normally this will mean that the equipment is hermetically 

sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in 

such a manner that produces no harmful effects 

An 'X' can be used for one of the digits, if there is only one class of protection, for example IPX4. 

*In zones 1 & 2, if there is a likelihood of water jets being used for cleaning purposes, a minimum of IPX5 is required. 

*Where ceiling heights exceed 2.25m, the zones are effective up to 3m - beyond 3m, the walls are out of scope. 

*Basins are not covered, however they are usually considered to be zone 2. 

*Providing the space under the bath cannot be accessed without using tools, that space is considered to be out of zone. However, if in any doubt check.
