The Big Sioux River Valley Historical Society, also known as the Hawarden Historical Society, has a plan for helping you get into the spirit of the season. Six homes will be opening their doors to visitors on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1-4:30 p.m. for the Hawarden Holiday Tour of Homes. “On Saturday, Dec. 5, you can tour six homes in town,” said David Pusey, the president of the Hawarden Historical Society. “All the homes will be decorated for Christmas and each will have something special. I know one Jay and Aimee Flynn | 1200 9th St. of the homeowners will feature her collection of vintage China dolls and stockings.” The homes have a distinct feel and were built at different times. The Historical House was built at the turn of the 20th century. The “Pink House,” now owned by Bob and Kathy Fitch, was built in the American Queen Anne style in 1889. There are also three Craftsman homes on the tour as well as a house that was built in 1978. There will be a home for just about everyone’s taste. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event at a variety of businesses in Hawarden, but on the day of the Historical House | 801 Ave. H Ready, DECORATE set, event, tickets can be purchased at the Historical House. At the Historical House, people will able to tour the house, but they’ll also be able to enjoy some refreshments, according to Pusey. They’ll be serving coffee, hot apple cider and cookies. The Hawarden Holiday Tour of Homes is a fundraiser for the Hawarden Historical Society. In addition to the tour, another fundraiser that will be running concurrently is a quilt raffle. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the same places that are selling the tickets for the Tour of Homes. Tickets for the raffle cost $5 for a single ticket or three tickets for $10. In addition to being a fundraiser, the organizers hope this event spreads some holiday cheer. “We hope this helps get people in the Christmas spirit and they are kind of neat homes as well just to be able to see,” Pusey said. “We are so thankful to the homeowners who are opening their homes and letting us do this event.
