alma ante as ruidosidades e exteriores modernas, o Inerte,
o Inativo deve ser o nosso ideal. Fútil? Talvez.
To publish - the socialization of ones's self. A vile necessity!
But still not a real act, since it's the publisher who makes
money, the printer who produces. It at least has the merit of
being incoherent. When a man reachs the age of lucidity,
one of his main concerns is to actively and thoughtfully shape
himself into the image and likeness of his ideal. Since inertia
is the ideal that best embodies the logic of our soul´s aristocratic
attitude vis-à-vis the bustle and clamour of the modern
world, our ideal should be inert, the inative. Futile? Perhaps.
But this will only trouble those who feel attracted to futility.
- Fernando Pessoa)
The life we live is a flexible, fluid
misunderstanding, a happy mean between the
greatness that doesn't exist and the happiness
that can´t exist. We are content thanks to our
capacity, even as we think and feel, for not
believing in the soul's existence. In the masked
ball which is our live, we're satisfied by the
agreable sensation of costumes, which are all
that really count for the ball. We're servants of
the lights and colours, moving in the dance as
if in the truth...
(from the Book of Disquiet - Fragments of an
Autobiography - Fernando Pessoa)
interessa. Não me interessa porque a alma é
The vast succession of persons and things that
make up the world is for me an endless gallery
of paintings, whose inner dimension doesn't
interest me. It doesn't interest me, because the
soul is monotonous and always the some in
everybody; only its personal manifestations
change, and the best part of the soul spills over
into dreams, behaviour and gestures, thereby
entering the apinting which captivates me and
in which I see faces that are faithful to my
affection.
(from the Book of Disquiet -The Visual Lover (I)
- Fernando Pessoa)
do ar frio.
I feel and forget. A nostalgia - the same one
that everyone feels for everything - invades me
as if it were an opium in the cold air. I have an
inner, pseudo-ectasy that comes from seeing.
(from the Book of Disquiet - Dolorous Interlude
- Fernando Pessoa)
