arrivato nel mare dei club nautici, il Royal
Thames Yacht Club ha navigato davanti
a tutti anche sulla rotta verso l’evoluzione
dello yachting. Nel 1786, infatti, il primo
evento sponsorizzato della storia, la
Vauxhall Cup, fu organizzata dal RTYC.
E, ancora, al club londinese si deve, nel
1887, l’anno del Giubileo d’oro della regina
Vittoria, l’estensione del campo di gara
al mare aperto, con l’organizzazione di un
tour di 1500 miglia nautiche intorno alle
isole britanniche.
La bandiera del RTYC sventola su tutta la
società nautica internazionale anche grazie
al prestigio dei suoi membri. La scelta
del bacino di Weymouth come teatro degli
eventi nautici dell’Olimpiade 2012 è stata
fatta da sir Keith Mills, presidente internazionale
di Londra 2012 nonché membro
del Royal Thames Yacht Club, mentre per
quanto riguarda la parte agonistica, sir
Ben Ainslie, socio del club londinese, è diventato
nel 2012 il velista più premiato della
storia grazie al primo posto nella classe
Finn, in aggiunta ai successi del 2004 e del
2008 nella stessa classe e alle medaglie del
1996 e del 2000 nella classe Laser.
Il fatto di essere il circolo nautico più antico
del mondo non impedisce al Royal Thames
Yacht Club di veleggiare ancora in
prima fila nell’organizzazione degli eventi
legati al mare. Non c’è nulla di scricchiolante,
insomma, nella struttura pluricentenaria
del club inglese, attivo anche fuori
dalle acque territoriali inglesi grazie agli
86 yacht club collegati, fra i quali spiccano
lo Yacht Club Italiano e lo Yacht Club
Costa Smeralda. Il fiore all’occhiello del
calendario del circolo inglese resta comunque
la Cumberland Regatta, che si svolge
sempre nel Solent, in omaggio alla tradizione.
Per quanto riguarda l’attività nautica del
club, la base vicina al Queen Mary Reservoir,
vicino all’aeroporto di Heathrow, ha
permesso di aumentare le possibilità di
allenamento utilizzando una flotta di otto
J80 condivisa con il Royal Yacht Squadron
di Cowes e, in minor parte, con la
Surrey School.

Naturally the English Royal Family is
well represented in the managerial ranks of
the yacht club: the Commodore of the Royal
Thames Yacht Club is Prince Andrew, the
Duke of York. Very active over the centuries
in organizing regattas, the RTYC has used
the Thames as a race area since 1850, but
with improvements in transport ashore, the
vessels began to give battle at sea in the waters
of the Solent, the arm of the sea between the
English coast and the Isle of Wight. A leader
among yacht clubs, the RTYC has always
been in the forefront in the course of yachting
evolution. In 1786, the first sponsored event
in history, the Vauxhall Cup, was organized
by the RTYC. And in 1887, the Golden Jubilee
year for Queen Victoria, the London club
brought racing to the open sea, organizing a
1,500 mile tour around the British Isles. The
RTYC pennant, thanks to its member’s prestige,
has an important position among international
nautical organizations. The choice
of the Weymouth basin for the 2012 Olympics
was made by Sir Keith Mills, international
president for London 2012 and member of
the Royal Thames, while amongst the sailors
Sir Ben Ainslie, also a member, is now the
sailor with the most Olympic medals, with
his 2012 gold medal in the Finn to add to his
2004 and 2008 successes in the same class,
and his 1996 and 2000 medals in the Laser.
Although the oldest yacht club in the world,
the Royal Thames is still in the front line organizing
events related to the sea. The solid
250 year old English club is also active outside
of British territorial waters thanks to the
86 yacht clubs with reciprocal relationships,
including the Yacht Club Italiano and the
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The annual
Cumberland Regata is still the high point of
the RTYC event calendar, run in the Solent
as tradition demands.
And as for sailing activities, the Club’s waterfront
facilities near the Queen Mary Reservoir
allow for increased training possibilities
with a fleet of eight J/80s, shared with
the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes, and to a
lesser extent, the Surrey School.
