The Brownie Band
A Brownie Indian,
I am known
With tomahawk
to hold my own.
Utilizing the Scottish highland folktales of his
maternal ancestory, a then unknown Canadian
artist named Palmer Cox created a group of
playful sprites known as the Brownies and he
introduced them to the world in February of 1883
in a children’s periodical, St. Nicholas Magazine.
Like the greats, Rose O’Neill and Johnny Gruelle,
Palmer Cox filled his world with a wide array of
fanciful characters, and like those greats, Palmer
Cox now finds his works immortalized by the
contemporary great R John Wright.
Each Brownie is an entirely hand-made wool-felt
doll from R John Wright and each is specially
designed with heavy-wire feet to stand unaided.
Each is a numbered limited edition of just 250
and comes in a fanciful presentation box with a
certificate of authenticity.
than a century ago in 1895. We
have only one copy. OS-460. $125.
T h e Du D e
First appearing in the 1887
"The Brownies, Their Book."
by Palmer Cox, the whimsical
Dude is one of the most
recognizable Brownies ever,
and why shouldn’t he be, for
he is the one who shows the other Brownie what
to wear, though honestly, they don’t seem to
listen much.
The Brownie Dude is made of the finest all-wool
felt and wears a natty outfit consisting of cuffed
trousers, waistcoat, stiffened collar with bow tie,
and swallow-tailed jacket as well as a matching
top hat and, of course, a hand-carved wood cane
and a gold plated monocle.
Produced in just 250 pieces, The Dude is a
limited edition exclusive to Dollmasters and
will be presented with a signed and numbered
certificate of authenticity. 9". SD-1113. $475.
The special secret of the
mohair teddy bear, My
Special Secret, by Irish
teddy bear artist Amy
Beth Goodrich, is that the
mohair on the torso is
actually a draw-string vest
which opens to reveal an
embroidered design of a
teddy bear and the words
"Bright Daffodils." The
unique teddy is entirely
hand-made of the finest
A photographic tour
of the antique doll
houses and doll rooms
of Hanne Buktas
gathered, furnished
and peopled over a
30 year span. "The
extraordinary objects
in these rooms, and
how lovingly they
are presented is a
testament to one
woman’s vision of
a perfect past", says
Florence Theriault,
who edited the book.
The little toys left
lying the floor, mother
leaning over a cradle, a wall filled with paintings, the dog at master’s side – these are all touches that make
us certain we have lived in, visited or simply dreamt about these homes many times before, in real life
size, and their echoes will vibrate as you turn the pages. Note: the Hanne Buktas Collection shown in these
pages will be auctioned by Theriault’s in January 2010 and a catalog of the 1000s of individual items will be
available then to accompany Echoes of Remembered Rooms. You can order both now at a special savings. For
more information about the auction contact Theriault’s at 800-638-0422 or info@theriaults.com). Hardbound.
BT-275. $59. (The auction catalog, BT-276, will be available December 15 for $59, or you can order
both for a special combined price of $99 until November 30, 2009).
Some people call them pincushion dolls. Whatever
name you give them, you know that they’re one
of the hottest collectibles around. New York artist
Anne Arroyo has designed an entire shadowbox of
bisque re-creations of some of the most popular
half-doll designs ever made. They look fabulous
hanging on a wall in the polished wooden
shadowbox, or you might like to sew a pincushion
During the 1990s, Theriault's, the world famous doll auction
