A LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR
With little in the background but noises of vehicles
I watch my cat stick her nose out of the window.
Some light falls perfectly on her black face. Her eyes light up and she takes
a deep breath. The cool air of October blows in her face
and you can see her whiskers move.
I would like to welcome you to read our growing magazine.
It has been a challenge to find the right identity and the perfect fit. The idea
of the magazine was conceived in June 2015. Things have changed along
the way and we’re hoping that your lives will be changed after opening the
cover page of our very first issue.
We hope to inspire you with our personal collections and favorites. We’ve
been looking all over the world for great like-minded artist that push society’s
boundaries and we will not stop.
Our ethereal style has to leave you loved and inspired. Our team is naturally
growing as well.
I had the pleasure of envisioning this magazine, and making this dream
come true.
Thank you all and enjoy reading!
BYMERKS
In our search to connect with those inspired or even addicted to fashion we came across blogs that
we absolutely love. First we’re introducing Bart Merks with his blog www.bymerks.com
Who said fashion is only for girls, Bart shows the opposite. Bart Merks is 22 years old and is the
founder and editor of BYMERKS.com, currently based in Arnhem. He graduated the bachelor of
Dance in Education at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem, The Netherlands in 2015. He developed
himself as a photographer, dancer, artist, model and traveler who wants to share his love for dressing
the human body. He started a journey to document his daily outfits in 365 days. And his blog
with personal documentations began. On Sunday he posts in a special category ‘Sunday dinner’. A
Sunday documentation full of coziness!
His interest in fashion began early as he loved to dress up as a child and he still does. It’s not
about being trendy for him but a way to express and present himself. For example, if he feels sad,
his goal in styling is to make him feel better. To him, it’s a langauge without words, to impress people,
to hide, to stand in the picture, to show who you are or who you want to be. Bart doesn’t like
to follow the newest trends, but to create his own to what fits his body the best. In his own words
he describes it as speaking without saying much. Bart feels best when he knows his style is turning
heads.
Q: What would you like to see happening
for your blog?
A: “I want to keep it my artistic playground.
Being faithful to myself by not selling my soul
to any compagny and by showing my vision on
what really matters to me. I would love to collaborate
with amazing artists and people who
inspire me.
Q: How would you describe yourself in
three words?
A: Creative, transboundary and mysterious-pure.
Q: How would you describe your blog in
ten words?
A: artistic-playground, outfits-of-365-days, travel-diary,
52-Sunday-dinners, portraits, waysof-dressing,
mensfashion, fashion-shows, ART,
pureness.
Q: What does your blog say about you?
A: It shows who I am as an artist; a fashion inspiration,
a humanbeing and a traveler. I’m trying
to show the best moments of my life which I
capture with my artistic eye. Trying to be fair to
myself and showing things that make me move
in a possitive way.
VAG·A·BOND·ED, VAG·A·BOND·ING,VAG·A·BONDS
Derived from Late Latin vagābundus, meaning wandering or wanderer.
We see our collaboration with Fashionpush as very exciting. The magazine
gave us, as starting fashion brand, the opportunity to convey our message
on fashion. Bringing together creative people with different backgrounds and
expertise creates an interesting view on youth culture as seen in the editorials.
Launched in Eindhoven by two design students, the collection set about
reintroducing the modern Vagebond.
“Urban wanderers, leading an unsettled and carefree life.”
This modern vagebond has personality, temperament, individuality and is
free spirited.
The Studio Vagebond collection exists of easy to wear tops, tees and
sweaters and will soon be extended to also feature accessories. The work
is inspired by the richness of street culture and the artefacts created by the
unsettled creative minds reframing fashion, art, music etc.; those reframing
society.
Every piece of the Vagebond collection proposes a clear statement.
Vagebond represents those who are there not to follow, but to be followed.
PETER
KOEHLER
INTERVIEW
Peter Koehler Can you tell us a little about
you.
I bought my first DSLR this year and I used to
be really serious about touring the country in
a band. I live with roommates in Orlando while
going to UCF.
How would you describe yourself?
How did you develop this identity?
Haha I have no idea honestly. I just love creating
something and working with different people.
Getting to know and connecting with my models
is also really amazing. Being able to create
something with somebody else is really a team
effort and I enjoy that.
I don’t really like labeling so I guess I’m just
myself. A uniquely and totally different person
just like everybody else.
How did you get into photography?
I got into photography with Polaroids. One of
my girlfriends got me a small camera a while
back but I never took it serious until i had to
find a creative outlet before I drove myself
insane. I had stopped playing in a band so I had
to do something.
Can you identify your photography? Does
your photography reflect your identity?
Hmmmmm.... I just love photographing interesting
people and playing with fashion, light and
shadow, and natural beauty. I do think photography
is an extension of myself and my ideas
and sometimes I shoot what Im feeling as well.
Where does your inspiration come from
when you’re identifying your photography?
My inspiration comes from everywhere. Other
photographers’ works, going out and exploring,
love. I usually create what I feel usually so that’s
the main reason why I’m so passionate about
my work.
Where do you want to go from here?
I want to travel, meet new people, work for
magazines, work for clothing companies. You
know, the basic spiel.
How important is it in photography to
identify yourself?
If I didn’t have photography, let’s just say I
would be doing something else creatively. I
can’t imagine life without being able to express
and create.
What motivates you to keep identifying
yourself in your photography?
Being able to do something different every time
is what motivates me. Other photographers and
my mentors motivate me to push harder and be
better. Shooting film also motivates me to be a
better photographer.
Any advice in photography?
Yes. I have a lot of advice for only being in
it about a year and I hope to learn and teach
at one point. Mainly, don’t worry about what
other people think or what other photographers
are doing. Be your own biggest fan and shoot
better than yesterday. Go out and experiment
with light, photographers capture light and being
able to capture it well takes practice. Master
your craft; apply yourself and put in time to get
better.
A: I am open to almost everything and
limit.
Q: How would you describe yourself
A: Creative, go-getting, dreamer
Q: How would you describe your
blog in ten words?
A: Versatile, sassy, chique, feminine,
A: It tells you something about who I am,
where I like to go. The answer to all this
is that there are only few limits and that I
like to explore them bit by bit.
