“A New Spirit:
‘Lifelong Formation”
20 November 2015
Dear Iona Community,
Over the course of the past week, it would have been impossible not to be
touched and affected by the many areas of conflict throughout the world. It can
often be very difficult to form a meaningful and helpful response to such violent
acts of terror. All families of Iona have chosen to send their sons to a school
that has a deep and profound respect for the dignity of human life. We
genuinely believe that this is one of the key features of a Catholic education in
the spirit of the Oblates.
I thought I would try and share some Catholic insights into ways that your family
may choose to respond to such global events.
The first response that Catholics are invited to live out, is to reject hatred and pray.
The brutal and barbaric acts of violence against innocent civilians in Beirut, Iraq, Paris, Syria, Kenya,
Nigeria and other places have left us struggling with various emotions: outrage, anger, sorrow and fear.
Although the acts of terror occurred in other countries, those murdered were doing what many Australians
may do on Friday nights: attending a concert, going to a sporting event, attending a market or meeting
friends for dinner. How are Catholics to respond to such acts of terrorism? The reactions of Pope
Francis and other Catholic leaders have given us some good examples to follow, which can be
summarized as follows:
Solidarity and Prayer
The very first response should be an expression of solidarity or closeness with the victims of the violence.
Very soon after learning of the terrorist attacks in Paris, Pope Francis said: “I am close to the people of
France, to the families of the victims, and I am praying for all of them.”
Condemn Evil
The killing of the innocent, whatever the motivation, must be absolutely and unconditionally condemned.
Pope Francis described the terrorism in Paris as “an unspeakable attack on the dignity of the human
person.” He reaffirmed with vigour his conviction that “the path of violence and hatred does not resolve
the problems of humanity.” Moreover, “the use of God’s name to justify this path is a blasphemy.”
Avoid Hatred
The horrific scenes out of Paris, Lebanon, Syria and other places, along with other acts of terror, can
easily lead us to be consumed with anger and hatred toward those who carried out these crimes. In a
statement issued the day after the attacks, Archbishop André Vingt-Trois of Paris prayed for “the grace of
a firm heart, without hatred.” He appealed to the French faithful not to indulge “in panic or hatred” and to
continue in the path of “moderation, temperance and control.” Because the terrorists were allied with
Daesh (Daesh is the term that the Islamic extremists do not like) and invoked Muslim sayings, the
temptation to give into feelings of anger or hatred toward Muslims must be resisted.
“In fact, there is a silent and peaceful majority of Muslims that
reject such politicization of the religion; they are accepting to live
a common life with others within the civil state and according to
the law.”
“The world expects those who claim to adore God to be men
and women of peace who are capable of living as brothers and
sisters, regardless of ethnic, religious, cultural or ideological
differences.”
No. 36
Support Peacemakers
The terrorist attacks in Paris remind us that we are dealing with a worldwide structure of ideological
violence. Pope Francis sees what is happening as a piece of the “piecemeal Third World War.” This is a
war that must involve international cooperation and goodwill on the part of people of different faiths and
nations.
Trust in Christ
We understand as Catholics that this is a war that must be fought with spiritual and not merely military
weapons. St. Paul reminds us that “our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with
the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens” (Eph 6:12).
The powers of darkness have inspired many ideologies of violence throughout world history. We must
not give in to hatred, anger, or despair. We must stand firm “girded in truth, clothed in
righteousness” (Eph 6:14). We must call upon the powerful intercession of Mary, the Queen of Peace,
and find hope in the words of Christ: “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have
conquered the world” (Jn 16:33).
FROM THE RECTOR cont...
If your children really are still afraid after your reassurances, Paul Coleman, a psychologist suggests a handy acronym of things to do: SAFE
S: Search for hidden questions or fears. Ask what else is on their mind about what happened, what their friends say about it and what their
biggest worry is right now. “The goal is to not assume your child is okay because it would make you—the parent—more at ease to believe that
is so,” he says. “Some children may not speak up about their fears or may be unable to articulate them without a parent’s willingness to ask
questions.”
A: Act. Keep routines going—homework, bedtime rituals and so on—because they’re reassuring and distracting. “It is a good time to have them
do kind things for others,” says Coleman. Little things like helping an elderly neighbour, or opening a door for a stranger “reminds them that
there are kindnesses in this world.” This reduces the sense of helplessness.
F: Feel feelings. “Let them know their feelings make sense,” says Coleman. “Saying ‘There is nothing to worry about,’ teaches them that you
may not be the person to speak to about their fears.” Let them talk it out and show that you understand.
E: Ease Minds. After you’re sure they’ve talked through their fears, you can assure them of their safety. “Reassure them that there are good
people trying to help others and prevent future attacks,” says Coleman.
The number one thing most experts agree on is that your child needs your time. “The best thing you can do as a parent is be available,”
“Just spending time with him and reassuring him that an event like this is unusual can make a huge difference.”
VALEDICTORY MASS AND DINNER
Last Friday evening we honoured our senior students at their Valedictory Celebration. The 2015 cohort celebrated mass at Our Lady of Graces with
their families, followed by a formal dinner for the boys and their parents, at the Greek Club. Thank you to Mr Harvey, Mr Wilden and their teams for
a memorable evening.
This Friday is the Year 12s last day where they will be officially farewelled at a special College assembly. While the boys may have entered Iona to
learn, we sincerely hope that they leave Iona to serve. They graduate as proud Ionians. God bless and best wishes.
CALTEX SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL AWARD
On Wednesday evening, the presentation ceremony for the 2015 Caltex Service to the Schools Awards were held. These
awards commenced in 1995 and recognise outstanding students from the schools and colleges located within a 5km radius of
the Lytton Refinery for their contribution to their schools and the wider community. Congratulations to Oliver Plevey, Iona’s Year
12 recipient and Mitchell Yarrow, our Year 6 nominee. Both of these boys have demonstrated leadership, citizenship and
community spirit during their schooling and are very deserving winners.
DATES OF THE START OF THE 2016 COLLEGE YEAR
Monday, January 25:
Will see the arrival of all Years 5, 7, 12 and all new students (of various year levels) to the College for their first day.
This has been previously communicated in various places.
Wednesday, January 27:
Will see ALL students attend school.
I do realise that many other schools have made different arrangements as a result of the State Government changing their school dates. We have
maintained our dates in order to give the best possible chance for a smooth entry for our Year 5s and 7s and new students, as well as important
leadership and orientation time for our Year 12 students. This decision has been made with the best of intentions, however, I do realise and
appreciate that there may be adjustments made to the last days of holidays.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2016 COLLEGE PREFECTS
During the week we announced the Year 12 College Prefects and next week’s final newsletter will feature each of them and offer the community’s
congratulations and best wishes.
FAITH AND MISSION
PRAY FOR PARIS
All acts of terrorism are inherently evil.
Additionally, the recent attacks in Paris
were wilfully tragic and the apparent
justifications are deplorable.
National and international acts of terror will
often incite a plethora of human emotions
among people, including fear, anxiety,
anger and rage. However, political and
religious leaders and psychologists
encourage the affected and onlookers to
remain calm and try to process these events with a sense of resilience.
Psalm 37 has some reassuring thoughts:
PSALM 37:7-11
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who seems to prosper in his way,
over the one who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger and forsake your wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
For the evildoers shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
In God’s time, the wicked will be no more;
though you look carefully at their fortress,
they will not be there in due course.
But the meek shall inherit the land and
delight themselves in abundant peace.
COMMUNITY NEWS
FAREWELL SENIORS 2015
There is certainly a touch of sadness and excitement amongst the
community as we farewell our senior cohort for 2015. As of Friday, we
welcome them as our new group of ‘old boys’ and we look forward to
their involvement in college activities for many years to come. The Old
Boy polo shirt, which can be purchased from the Uniform Shop for $50
may be great gift for your departing son. Please see the promotional
flyer attached to this newsletter for further details.
SECOND-HAND UNIFORM TRADING
School Seconds Website
Since last week’s newsletter there has been a great increase in the
the use of this service will increase further. All enquiries should be
directed through their website at www.schoolsseconds.com.au.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, the deceased, the
grieving and those who are fearful in France; and the international
Paris.
SCHOOL HEALTH FROM SICKBAY
WHOOPING COUGH (PERTUSSIS) ALERT
Recently, there has been a case of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in
our College. Pertussis is a highly infectious illness, particularly in the
first two weeks of the cough. It can be distressing at any age and
remains a life threatening infection for babies. Please ensure you do
not ignore a cough that does not abate and seek medical attention.
Pertussis is part of the childhood vaccination schedule offered to all
Australian children. Parents are advised to ensure their child’s and
their own immunisations are up to date. Please check with your GP if
you are unsure if your family is protected. Protection against
whooping cough diminishes with time and it can occur in those who
are vaccinated. All adults who have not been vaccinated in the last
ten or so years are at risk.
Anyone affected must stay away from school or work until they have
completed a minimum of five days antibiotic treatment or for
twenty-one days from the onset of coughing. A written medical
clearance from the doctor is required before return to school or work.
DRAMA DEPARTMENT
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT?
It’s been a great Term 4! The Drama students have been enjoying
workshops, excursions, clubs and special projects!
The Year 12 Drama students kicked the term off by attending QUT’s
production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Gardens Theatre. This was
performed by the university’s second year acting students and
directed by Mark Radvan. This is just one of the many universities that
our Old Boys attend to develop their performance skills. Currently,
2013 Old Boy, Karl Stuifzand, is studying acting at QUT.
The Drama Department actively encourages our boys to pursue their
talents and this year we participated in the Queensland Theatre
Company’s “Scene Project” as a special curricular extension activity.
Congratulations to our boys who performed at QTC’s Bille Brown
Studio on a simply stellar performance of The Fledglings. Well done
to: Michael Allen, Jaycob Beven-Delaney, Matthew Geaney, Andrew
Hamilton, Rory Hawkins, Johrel Martschinke, James Waycott. The
fantastic feedback from the QTC’s actors who watched our boys’ work
was inspiring! Our troupe performed with creativity, conviction and
commitment.
The “Scene Project” is just one example of the many excellent external
academic extension opportunities that the department trains and
supports the boys to gain entry into. Congratulations to Michael Allen,
Jaycob Beven-Delaney, Paul Henry-Cornish, Nathan Kempson and
Joshua White who were selected as La Boite Theatre Company 2015
Student Ambassadors. Similarly, well done to Jaycob Beven-Delaney,
Matthew Geaney and Michael Sullivan who gained entry into the
prestigious Queensland Theatre Company’s Youth Ensemble. This
weekly year-long training program sees talented students tutored at
the Queensland Theatre Company by professional actors. This
program is designed to create the actors and creative artists of
tomorrow’s stage and screen.
Recently, the Years 5 and 6
Drama Club finished up for the
year after hours of mirth and
merriment. A very big thank you
to Year 12 Drama student Paul
Henry-Cornish for initiating this
club which was successfully
conducted most Friday
lunchtimes this year. The junior
boys absolutely had a ball! As
one excited Year 5 boy exclaimed, “This is the best bit of the week!”
This undertaking will be extended in 2016, to include a club for Years
7-9. Paul was enthusiastically helped out by a fellow Year 12 Drama
student Rory Hawkins, and Year 11 Drama students, Jaycob
Beven-Delaney, Joshua White and Michael Allen.
Inside the classroom, we also brought in professional artists to work
with the boys. The Year 9 boys had fun at their commedia dell’arte
workshop and the Year 11 boys were thoroughly engaged in their
Australian Gothic Theatre scriptwriting workshop. The Year 9 boys
also attended the QTC’s witty production of The Odd Couple at The
Playhouse, QPAC, to enhance their studies into comedy.
Best wishes to our graduating Year 12 Drama students and
congratulations on their achievements. Their Drama results were
outstanding! As a result of their dedication and passion, every student
in the class achieved a VHA. This result is a testament to their hard
work and love of the subject.
SPORT NEWS
2015 Iona College sport will conclude this weekend with a volleyball
trial against Churchie at Churchie. It has been a large and involved
year of physical activity for our community. Our 2015 mantra of “Get
moving, get coached, get enjoyment” appears to have been achieved
even though it is difficult to measure the quality of sporting involvement.
Our preparations for 2016 are underway with sailing, volleyball, cricket,
chess and rugby already in pre-competition phase. What lies ahead is
awaiting to be seized with enthusiasm.
COACHING / MANAGING TEAMS 2016
Those parents wishing to assist in the role of coach or manager of a
sporting team in 2016 are requested to contact Mr Harron
(harronk@iona.qld.edu.au) or Mrs Otway (otwayk@iona.qld.edu.au) by
the end of term. Sports which always need assistance are cricket,
rugby and football as well as sailing. Coaches are also welcome in
other sports.
DATE CLAIMERS
21 November - Volleyball trial games vs Churchie (at Churchie)
21 November - 1st XI and 2nd XI cricket trial vs Villanova
SWIMMING
Seventy-one swimmers competed in a swim trial last Friday afternoon
so the swim staff could review our current standard of times. If Iona is
to remain a top three AIC swimming college, vacation training is
essential. It follows that those swimmers who return to the College in
2016 without a base of training will not perform to their potential.
Swimming Camp
Swimmers invited to the annual High Performance Camp (January 20 -
22) were provided details this week. Attendance return slips must be
returned to Mr Harron, the swim coordinator, by Friday 20 November.
HIGH PERFORMANCE
Congratulations to Callum MacDonald and Maxim Watson who were
both selected in the Queensland U18 Baseball Team for the national
championships over the vacation.
Next week, seven Iona students will participate in the Pacific School
Games in Adelaide:
Swimming: Lachlan Carter, Hayden Ivanisevic, Kai Thomas,
Hayden Wasiak
Softball: Isaac Smith
Touch: Alex Condon
Football: Jaimie Cogman
This is a wonderful opportunity for these athletes to experience high
level competition, to establish friendships and to share cultures with
overseas competitors.
SAILING
The Iona Sailing Club completed the season of sailing for Term 4 last
Sunday on the windy waters of Moreton Bay. Our Fleet sailors
continued to show promise and improvement with Caleb Palmer
crossing the line fourth in a field of 27 boats – a very impressive
achievement. All three races were completed in varied conditions that
challenged both experienced and rooky sailors alike. By the time the
briefing for the afternoon Teams races were completed, it was obvious
that the dangerous conditions predicted for the morning were going to
arrive after all. The two races that got under way were hit hard by
winds gusting up to 25 knots. Chaos reigned and capsized boats
became the norm before the ‘racing abandoned’ flag was raised.
Thanks to our safety boat crew who assisted our capsized sailors. Iona
finished the truncated season a commendable third and my thanks go
again to all who have coached this term. Thanks to our Year 11s in
particular who have been wonderful mentors to the younger boys, both
in technical and pastoral terms.
Many thanks go to the chefs at our presentation BBQ and all who
organised the beautiful gifts and as I sign off as Co-ordinator/
Commodore/Sailing Master, I thank one and all for the honour and
privilege of assisting the amazingly talented and brave Ionian sailors.
I have no doubt parents and boys alike will continue to spread Iona’s
name throughout land and sea in an honourable and glorious way.
Andrew Ricketts (Sailing Coordinator)
The Iona Sailing Community would like to
thank Mr Andrew Ricketts for his support of
Iona sailing and for giving up his time during
the last two years. We wish him well during his
time off and hope he takes the opportunity to
take a Learn to Sail Course while he is away.
CRICKET
The Iona 1st XI and 2nd XI cricket teams will play a trial match against
Villanova College this Saturday. The 1st XI will play on Davine oval.
The 2nd XI will play on McCarthy oval. Both games will commence at
8.00am.
Volleyball Trial vs Churchie
There will be a trial for Year 8 - Open (2016 teams) against Churchie on
21 November. Selected boys will be required to attend.
Boys will be given an Iona volleyball shirt on the day of the trial to wear
for the game. Shirts must be returned to the coach immediately after
the match.
Please meet your coach 30 minutes before game time.
