Britain’s Best
Lawn Has Been
Crowned!
Britain’s best Lawn judge, Martin Fish, presents winner,
Ade Ambler with his prizes
Ade Ambler, a property developer
from Bishop Norton in Lincolnshire,
has been announced as the winner of
the 2015 Britain’s Best Lawn
competition.
With a prize fund worth over £6,000, as
well as the prestigious title up for grabs,
competition had never been stronger, as
the award celebrated its tenth anniversary.
For the past ten year’s petrol engine
manufacturer for lawnmowers and
outdoor equipment, Briggs & Stratton,
has set upon its annual search to find
Britain’s Best Lawn to honour the hours
that gardeners dedicate to their lawns.
Ade fought off fierce completion as
judges were impressed by the dedication
he displayed in his lawn care, as well the
originality of the design, using the hour
glass curves of a woman’s body as
inspiration!
Moving into the property nine years ago,
Ade has totally transformed the garden,
which was little more than a patch of
earth when he took it on. When
designing the space, the passionate
gardener was keen to maintain an
informal design, with no straight lines to
be seen. This informality does not extend
to his lawn care, however, with the edges
being perfected every three days, and the
lawn being cut once a day, alternating the
way that the stripes grow each time. Ade
favours diagonal lines that draw the eye
to the garden’s key features.
The award-winning lawn is fed every six
weeks, and scarification and aeration is
carried out in spring and autumn.
This hobby will be made even more
enjoyable with the prize of £5,000 and a
brand new Atco Clipper 20 lawnmower
(worth £1000). The generous prize also
includes a Keter patiobox, a selection of
Wolf Garten tools and the entire
collection of the best-selling Expert Books
by Dr. Hessayon (worth £450).

Four Lincolnshire charities have been
given a summer bonus thanks to one of
Grimsby’s best known companies and
biggest empolyers, the Ramsden Group
The four – Lincs Riding for Disabled,
Humberston Hydrotherapy Pool, Wish
Upon A Star and the St. Andrew’s
Childrens’ Hospice – have each
received a donation of £1,500, money
raised during the company’s annual
golf day held at Kenwick Park, near
Louth.
Almost 100 people, mostly supplier
representatives and customers from the
pub and retail trade, took part in the
event.

Group, said:

After completing the Leeds Half
Marathon in May and raising an
impressive £1,500 for Martin House
Children’s Hospice, Chris decided to kit
up again in his running shoes and carrot
costume.
The run made a change from his day job,
where he delivers Riverford’s organic veg
boxes to homes in the Huddersfield and
Leeds area.
Heaving veg boxes around on a daily
basis means Chris is already super-fit, but
this Sunday instead of running up
customers drives with carrots; he ran
13.1 miles dressed as them!

The golf day has become a key event in our
calendar. It is not only an opportunity to meet
some of our customers and associates on an
informal basis, but every year the event raises
lots of money which we then distribute to local
charities.
There’s a new beauty queen on the block!
After already making it to the final of Miss Peterborough and Miss Cambridgeshire,
Alexandra was awarded the title of Miss Lincolnshire this August.
She then went on to become a finalist in
the Miss Great Britain Pageant in Leicester
where 50 girls (all with titles) competed
for the ultimate crown.
Shortly after Miss GB, Alexandra was
scouted and offered a finalist place in Face
of The Globe: North England, if successful
in her heat she will go on to the Face of
The Globe World Final which is held in
Disneyland Paris!
Although Alexandra has become busy
with appearances and events, she never
forgets about charity. Alex has worked
voluntarily in Cancer Research UK in
Spalding and has helped out at various
charity events, only a few months into her
reign. You can see her modelling on the
catwalk for Oxjam in Hertingtonbury this
October.

Vacant Waterside Retail Unit To Be
Transformed Into Illuminated Art
Installation
An unused retail unit inside Waterside Shopping is set to transform into an
illuminated wonderland as part of this year’s Frequency Festival.
Waterside will welcome renowned digital
artists, Squidsoup, to the centre to utilise a
vacant Waterside-level shop as the setting
for a mesmerising and immersive
walkthrough experience called
Enlightenment.
Using 8,064 individual points of
suspended light to create feelings of
presence and movement, the installation
will transform empty space into a hybrid
environment where virtual and physical
worlds coincide.
The illuminated experience will feature four
5-minute sections that will include:
Lanterns where very slowly moving orbs
of light inhabit the space, suspended in
mid air. When guests approach, however,
they swiftly move away or burst and vanish
into thin air.
Divided Space which will create two
volumes of negative space, divided by a
moving plane. When entered, the divisions
will dissolve, leaving a trail of illuminated
space wherever guests roam.
Swarm an area that will fill the space with
countless flying lights that are attracted by
guests’ presence.
Ecstatic which can only be described as
sheer experience where visitors will feel the
light as it intensifies into an explosion of
colours.

Laceby man
dislocates
shoulder
cycling from
London to Paris
for charity
A Laceby man dislocated his shoulder
on the second day of a London to Paris
charity ride but pushed through to pass
the finish line.
54-year-old Nick Walker was taking part
in the charity ride to raise money for
Alzheimer’s Society.
Nick, who lives in Laceby, is Head Porter
at not-for-profit hospital, HMT St Hughs
in Grimsby. He was taking part in the 5-
day ride in the hope of raising £1,500.
The first day went smoothly but it was
during the second day that Nick
encountered some serious problems.
Nick came off his bike at some speed
which resulted in him having to to be
rushed to A&E in Arras France with a
suspected broken shoulder. After six x-
rays and a scan it turned out that he had
partially dislocated his shoulder, which
was put back in place under local
anesthetic.
Nick was advised to rest but he was
determined to ride on and fulfill his goal
of riding around the Arch De Triumph
and Eifel Tower.
On the third day Nick got back on the
bike and rode the full day in excruciating
pain, especially in his right hand and
shoulder. The next day his hand had
swollen up immensely and he was
unable to move it at all. Still determined
to continue, Nick came up with a plan
which would allow him to complete the
ride.
With gaffa tape and a little help from
some friends Nick taped his right hand
to his bike and pushed through the final
60 miles to Paris.
Nick, who lost his Aunt and Uncle to
Alzheimer’s had a target of £1,500
before the race started but has exceeded
his target and managed to raise £1,600.

Interview
Former Youth World Number one and four times British Latin Champion Kevin Clifton
known for his boundless energy and electric and contagious style started dancing at the
age of four. Taught by his parents, former World Champions Keith and Judy Clifton at
The Clifton Academy in Grimsby, it was evident that Kevin had star quality as well as a
compelling passion for the craft. This month Kevin is our Lincolnshire Personality.

KEVIN CLIFTON | LINCOLNSHIRE PERSONALITY
Kevin trained in all styles of
ballroom dance competing
nationally and internationally
as a child initially partnering
with his sister Joanne Clifton.
As Kevin got older he chose Latin as his
primary dance and won numerous
International Open titles in Italy, Spain,
Singapore, Sweden, Japan and France to
name a few. In 2008 Kevin joined Burn
The Floor Dance Company where he met
his fiancé Karen Hauer. Kevin and Karen
have been principal dancers of Burn The
Floor Dance Company for several years,
performing in the show's record breaking
Broadway run as well as in London's West
End. Kevin also toured the world with the
show performing in countries including
Japan, Australia, South Africa and the USA
as well as making guest appearances on
Dancing With The Stars in USA and So
You Think You Can Dance in Holland.
Kevin's talents are not only reserved for the
Ballroom as 2010 marked his musical
theatre debut where he performed in Dirty
Dancing The Musical at the Aldwych
Theatre in London's West End.
2012 marked a turning point in Kevin's
career as he was given the opportunity to
perform in some of the group dance
routines on the 2012 series of BBC1′s
Strictly Come Dancing and also worked on
some of the ensemble choreography. Kevin
impressed the BBC producers with his
talent, enthusiasm and undeniable passion
and was invited to join the professional
dancer line up on Strictly Come Dancing in
2013 alongside Karen. Kevin's debut has
been a remarkable success, partnering with
Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna
Reid and reaching the final in his first year.
Kevin has definitely made his mark on the
programme and is excited to be part of the
next series.
Outside of dancing Kevin is a huge fan of
football supporting Scunthorpe United and
Chelsea and tries to go to as many matches
as he can in his spare time.
What inspired you to start dancing?
I don't remember my first dance class but
as my parents are dancers, I apparently just
started joining in at the back of classes at
their school. I've always danced as far back
as I can remember. My first major influence
as a dancer was Michael Jackson. I would
spend hours watching tapes of him dancing
and try to copy him.
How did you start working on
Strictly?
Whilst touring with the broadway dance
show Burn The Floor, my wife Karen and I
decided we wanted a new challenge and
being big fans of the show we thought it
would be great to be a part of it. We
managed to get in touch with the
producers and secured an interview and
audition, in which I had 45 minutes to
teach a celebrity some Cha Cha Cha and
Waltz and then talk about it to the camera.
That first year, Karen got a place on the

show but there was no room for me. I
helped out on some of the group
choreography behind the scenes and tried
again the next year. A little known fact is
that I still initially didn't get the job until
at the last minute they extended the
number of celebrities from 14 to 15. A
week before the show started I was offered
the 15th pro slot. I feel very lucky to have
been asked back ever since.
Is it difficult to teach your celebrity
partners how to dance on the show?
How much training is required?
We train our partners on average 8 hours a
day from Monday to Thursday. It is very
full on as that it not very much time to put
a good quality dance together that will
entertain the audience and impress the
judges. Different celebrities come with
different challenges. Some maybe struggle
to pick up the steps quickly or retain the
steps. Others may get the steps easy
enough but struggle to have the
confidence to perform them. Trying to get
the best out of your partner is all part of
the fun.
Who has been your favourite
celebrity dance partner whilst on
Strictly?
So far I have been very lucky with my
partners. Susanna Reid was a fantastic
first partner for me as we clicked straight
away as friends. She was a ridiculously
hard worker but more importantly a lot of
fun and gave it everything. My 2nd year I
was partnered with Frankie Bridge who
was a godsend of a partner. It's vital that
you enjoy working with whoever you are
dancing with and Frankie was such a nice
girl. She really applied herself and listened
to everything I was teaching her which
meant she improved week after week. She
was a beautiful dancer.
I'm already enjoying dancing with Kellie
Bright this year. She is such a
good laugh but also a bit of a
perfectionist. Great combination.

When you're not appearing on
the show, what do you enjoy
doing in your spare time?
Whilst not on the show me and Karen are
still always dancing, whether with dance
companies or doing our own shows. We
try to keep learning all the time so we
never stay still in our own dancing. In our
downtime we like to sit on the sofa with a
cup of tea watching Match of the Day or
Great British Bake Off depending whose
turn it is with the remote.
You are originally from North East
Lincolnshire...how often do you
return to your home town and what
do you love about this region?
I don't often get back to Grimsby but I
always love it when I do. It's just home for
me. I love the people. Love seeing friends
from the area. Seeing my family. But most
of all the fish and chips!

Warm the mince pies and mull the wine, it's time to kick start the Christmas festivities
in Lincoln as the oldest traditional Christmas market in the UK returns to the city for
the 33rd time.
Set against the stunning
backdrop of the Lincoln's
impressive cathedral and
recently redeveloped castle, the
market has something for
everyone.
Around 250,000 visitors from
across the world will be able to
enjoy a wide range of delicious
food, find that perfect present
among the unique gifts and
homemade crafts and enjoy
seasonal sights and smells from
Thursday, December 3rd until
Sunday, December 6th.
Organised by City of Lincoln
Council, the event brings in
more than £13 million a year to
the local economy.
Claire McDowall, Principal
Events and Culture Officer,
said: “Over three decades
Lincoln Christmas Market has
built up an enviable reputation
thanks to its incomparable
setting, vibrant atmosphere and
festive feel.
“A survey carried out over the
past couple of years showed 9
in 10 people were either
satisfied or very satisfied with
the market, while nearly three
quarters of respondents said
they had specifically come to
Lincoln for the event. This is
great news for the city but
we're not complacent and are
continually looking to improve.
“This year we’ll have 50
authentic wooden chalets,
performances from festive
buskers and an improved food
court, all in an unrivalled
setting in the city's cathedral
quarter, boasting more than 200
quality stalls, Lincoln
Christmas Market is truly
magical and we hope to see you

Saturday on December 5th.

From the boutiques of
Bailgate to the big names
on the High Street,
outdoor ice skating, the famous
Christmas Market, festive
family theatre and magical
historical days out you can
really make the most of the
holiday season.
The countdown to Christmas
starts with the annual fun
packed Christmas Lights
switch on at St Marks
shopping centre on Lincoln’s
High Street. Join in the
excitement on Thursday 19th
November, when the shops
along the High Street and in
the Steep Hill area will be open
till late too, perfect for you to
get a head start on the
Christmas shopping. The
official switch on will be at
7.00 pm, but before then there
will be a variety of
entertainment from 5.30
onwards, followed by Carols
and a Christmas Message from
the Mayor of Lincoln, along
with celebrity guests Vicki
Michelle and Martin Daniels.
Lincoln's Cathedral Quarter
will be taken over by stalls,
entertainers and seasonal
themes for four days of festive
entertainment and shopping at
the famous Lincoln Christmas
Market, which runs from
December 3rd to December 6th.
As ever, its shop till you drop at
Freshney Place in Grimsby this

when the centre kicks off its
late night shopping event
programme. This means that
the centre will be open from
9am to 8pm every Thursday on

restaurants and cafes when you
can enjoy a post shopping
Christmas tipple or a meal with
friends.

LAMMA 2016 looks set
to build upon its
enormous success as
Britain's largest
agricultural machinery
show, with the event
taking place at the East
of England
Showground,
Peterborough on
January 20th-21st, 2016

How to Talk
A simple conversation to keep your
child safe from sexual abuse
Simple conversations,
like crossing the road,
bullying and dealing
with strangers, are subjects
you probably discuss with
your child, but what about
staying safe from sexual
abuse?
It's a conversation no parent
wants to have.
Thankfully it doesn't have to
be scary. In fact, you don't even
have to mention 'sexual abuse'.
The Underwear Rule is a
simple way to help keep
children safe. It teaches
children that their body
belongs to them, they have a
right to say no, and that they
should tell an adult if they're
upset or worried.
To help children really
remember the Underwear Rule,
the NSPCC want to get
everyone talking PANTS.
Each line of PANTS covers a
different part of the Underwear
Rule and provides a simple but
valuable lesson to keep
children safe.
We would suggest the
PANTS rule is suitable
for children between
5 and 11 but parents or
carers know their own children
best and may feel comfortable
covering elements of the rule
earlier.

Tips and techniques to talking
- Don't view conversations about staying safe as a one-off. It's much better to have the conversations little and often – you don't
even need to cover the whole rule all at once. This will help you to reinforce the key points, and to adapt the message as your child

- Weaving simple conversations about staying safe into the daily routine is a great way to stop it feeling like a lecture. If it feels less
strange for your child, it will feel much easier for you too.
- The NSPCC Underwear Rule booklet is available to download, there are also guides to help parents or children with learning
difficulties and disabilites. It’s also available in a number of different languages and for foster carers.

Christmas is a busy time
of year for many of us,
but, as we all take to
the road for the festive season,
weather conditions and dark
evenings can make driving
conditions more challenging.
Driving in the dark can be
challenging for a number of
reasons. Visibility is reduced,
hazards can be tricky to
anticipate and, in the winter,
adverse weather conditions can
cause roads to become
treacherous. Weather
conditions at Christmas can be
challenging for drivers. Whilst
snow, sleet and ice all pose
serious risks, heavy rain and
poor visibility can also make
driving more challenging,
especially for the inexperienced
or learner driver.
The festive season might be a
time for celebration and
relaxation, but the roads often
tell a very different story. As
people make their way home
for the holidays or rush out to
get last minute gifts, traffic
jams are likely and as a result
driver patience can start to
wear thin. It makes sense to
avoid peak times if at all
possible. Friday evenings, for
example, can be particularly
tricky to contend with, as
people take to the road to get
home for Christmas.
Every year organizations
concerned with road safety put
out their campaigns for better
awareness of hazards and
general road safety advice.
Christmas is a busy time of
year and as the festivities begin,
drink and drug drivers
unfortunately take to the road
too. Although the police
campaigns are well advertised
and they themselves are very
visible out and about tackling
drink and drug drivers
throughout the year, the
problem still peaks during the
festive period.
Make sure you stay safe during
the holiday season by limiting
your alcohol intake if you're
going to be taking to the road.
Remember you can even be
still be over the limit the
morning after, so although you
might feel fine, it can take
longer than you might expect
for your body to absorb and
break down the units of
alcohol. It is best not to drink
at all, but if you cannot
abstain, think very carefully
before you get behind the
wheel after only a couple of
drinks because ' It's Christmas!
