Our uniformed staff averages just less than ten years of service as commissioned police officers. The average years-of-service for the civilian staff is approximately six years. The most senior commissioned officer has thirty-two years with the City, While our most senior civilian employee has been here for twenty-two years. A number of the commissioned officers have had additional experience with other police departments or law enforcement agencies. One Lieutenant and one Detective are currently members of the Army Guard and the Air National Guard respectively. Twenty-seven members of the Police Department have college degrees- three Masters, fifteen Bachelors, and nine Associates. Throughout 2004, the Fairbanks Police Department celebrated its centennial anniversary. The centennial was honored with commemorative badges, collector pistols, and a display of the Fairbanks Police Department’s history in our station’s lobby. For 2004 only, commissioned officers were authorized to wear a special commemorative “Star” badge, a reproduction of the original badges worn by this Department in 1904. Two hundred of these badges were produced and then purchased by the individual officers who wore them. Patrol uniforms were put on display in the lobby of the Police Department. One of the uniforms is the tan 1967 uniform adopted for the Alaska Purchase Centennial (1867- 1967). Our display case contains the Eisenhower jacket that accompanied the uniform. The current F.P.D. navy-blue uniform replaced our tan uniform in 1989. As part of our centennial display, the Fairbanks Police Department also honored Dorotha Hilliard, the first female police officer to serve in Fairbanks. Officer Hilliard is currently buried at the Yankovich Road Cemetery. The Police Department also authorized the production of a Glock G-21 collector’s pistol, commemorating our Centennial. The Glock has the current Department badge on the right side with the words “Fairbanks Police 100th Anniversary 1904-2004”. The G-21 is the same pistol currently in use at FPD. The Serial number series produced for this limited-edition pistol ran from JKL811 to JKL911. “JKL” commemorates the loss of Officer John “Kevin” Lamm; the end- number of 911 reflects not only the emergency-notification phone number, but also our Department’s address on Cushman Street. The Police Department lobby currently holds display cases which showcase memorabilia from our past. The success of this celebration, specifically the production of commemorative badges, collector pistols and the lobby display, is attributed to the countless hours and dedication of Lieutenant Don “Dusty” Johnson.
