EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
2004 brought a lot of changes to the
Fairbanks Police Department’s Emergency
Communications Center. On June 3,
2004, The North Pole Police Department
closed their own Dispatch Center, and
those dispatch functions were integrated
into the Fairbanks Center. As such, the
Dispatch Center began providing services
for seven new police and fire agencies, in
addition to the agencies we already serve!
The North Pole cut-over went relatively smooth for all agencies. There were
countless hours of procedural preparation, logistical consideration, and training
necessary for both the Dispatchers currently working in Fairbanks and North
Pole, as well as the new employees who had to be hired and trained. The call
volume that we received on a monthly basis immediately reflected this change;
the Dispatch Center received and handled 251,558 phone calls in 2004! Of these
calls, 33,746 were 9-1-1 calls. Our Dispatch Center handled an increase of
37,387 telephone calls in the center in 2004, primarily due to the sharp increase
in the overall number of calls-for-service in the second half of the year. The
Dispatch Center processed 28,777 Police calls, 6,029 Fire and Emergency Medical
Service (EMS) calls, and 599 Air Ambulance calls for the year.
