ORCHARD<br />
Given a river last I saw you given <strong>the</strong> sun<br />
a quarter of a century later an orchard never comes to grief<br />
so early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> day <strong>the</strong> hills lit with age<br />
a feel<strong>in</strong>g of hav<strong>in</strong>g dreamt emerges<br />
an impression of ourselves def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> appearance of birds<br />
flatters us <strong>in</strong>to a k<strong>in</strong>d of belief<br />
we live unshorn how grass brea<strong>the</strong>s <strong>the</strong> shadow of a hedge—<br />

THE LOST MEN<br />
In our view<strong>in</strong>g area<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> many w<strong>in</strong>dows<br />
a city’s solitary men<br />
like ve<strong>in</strong>s of an eye<br />
filled with blood<br />
watch flat-screens<br />
hop<strong>in</strong>g now & aga<strong>in</strong><br />
tomorrow is better<br />
right before bed<br />
shuffl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to kitchens<br />
we’ve always liked<br />
those little trash cans<br />
when you step on it<br />
<strong>the</strong> lid flips open—<br />
Kenneth E. Harrison, Jr.<br />
