FROM
THE
CEO
FROM
THE
COACH
TWO-THIRDS OF OUR PLAYING LIST ARE AGED 22 OR UNDER, AND NEXT
YEAR WE’LL PROBABLY GET YOUNGER AGAIN – WE SEE THIS AS A POSITIVE.
THIS SEASON HAS BEEN A YEAR OF
HIGHS AND LOWS AND PLENTY OF LEARNING.
Despite the challenges and obvious disappointments
faced this season, 2015 was an exciting year to be
a Lion. This is clear to me, as I hope it is to you, as
I follow the development of our junior players, and,
internally, as we make important strategic coaching
and administrative appointments.
It was also, however, a trying year due in large part
to the extent of injuries suffered by the playing
group; the AFL average is 90 injuries across a
season, and this year we had 281. These injuries
meant that we were never able to get our best team
on the park and that we struggled with consistency
as a result. The silver lining is that it provided the
opportunity for our younger, inexperienced players
to get valuable AFL game experience, and I am
pleased about that.
Through theHyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy,
we have had the debut this season of Harris
Andrews and Liam Dawson, and late in the season,
the return of Jonathan Freeman to the forward line.
We are proud that Harris becomes the first from the
Academy to be nominated for the NAB Rising Star
Award, which he received for his efforts against the
Cats in Round 18. I am optimistic about the depth of
talent coming through the Academy, and know that
it will stand us in good stead in the years to come.
I am also pleased with the results of the Club’s
recruiting in 2014, with Dayne Beams, Mitch
Robinson and Allen Christensen having made strong
impressions on the coaching staff and Lions faithful
alike. Their recent reward for effort at the Club’s
Awards Night (Beams and Robinson forming part
of a historic four-way-tie with Stefan Martin and
Dayne Zorko, Christensen finishing second in the
Merrett-Murray Medal count) is testament to this.
Two-thirds of our playing list are aged 22 or under,
and next year we’ll probably get younger again
– we see this as a positive. We were able to get
more than 200 games of experience into our first to
fourth year players in 2015, and this is critical to the
development of the Club and its future success.
I referred last year to the need to grow our
membership and crowd attendance, and I am
pleased to report that the Club has made positive
steps on both fronts; recording an overall
membership tally for 2015 in excess of 25 400 (one
thousand more members than last year and the
highest figure in five years) and playing in front of the
Club’s biggest home crowd in five years when 31,240
people descended on the GABBA in Round One to
watch the team lose narrowly to Collingwood.
These positive results are due to the success of the
‘Get to the GABBA’ campaign, and have encouraged
a number of new initiatives at the Club, including
the ‘Women of the Pride’ group, which counts more
than 552 inaugural members.
We thank you for your support in 2015 and look
forward to a brighter, more successful year in 2016.
While much of the year was disappointing, there
were also moments of brightness that give me
confidence for the year ahead.
We unearthed some young talent in Harris
Andrews, Jaden McGrath, Billy Evans, Liam
Dawson and Hugh Beasley – all of whom represent
the future of this Club. Due to an unfortunately high
number of injuries, each of these guys was exposed
to senior footy, where many of them flourished.
New recruits (Dayne Beams, Allen Christensen and
Mitch Robinson) have combined with our existing
senior squad to play an important leadership role at
the Club. Through their hard work and commitment
they lead by example.
While we are focused on making on-field
improvements, we have also made a number of
changes behind the scenes in an effort to bolster
the strength of supports offered to our players. I
am pleased to welcome back my former teammate
Craig Lambert who arrives at the Club with his
wife Melissa, who will take up a role in the Welfare
Department. I also welcome Damien Austin who
replaces Brett Burton - I look forward to seeing
what Damien can bring to the playing group.
Our end of season review was a very frank and
honest process in which all aspects of our on-field
and off-field development and strategy came under
review. I understand that this is a frustrating time
for supporters, but I urge you to keep the faith as we
move forward.
We have a really young group with a good long-term
future – it is important that we can get our fittest
group out on the park and playing their best football.
THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT
For me, in my first year as Captain, I have learned
a lot about myself and what it takes to be a great
leader. I see positive signs at all levels of the playing
group for the future of this Club. Obviously our
development is a work in progress, but we know
where we are at, how we can play, and what our
group is capable of.
After a short break I’m excited to get back to the
Hyundai Centre for pre-season and to kick-start our
2016 campaign. I’m also looking forward to seeing
new faces around the Club as Schwabby and the
recruiting team work hard over Spring to draw new
talent (through the trade and draft) to the list.
I am hopeful that in the next twelve months we can
turn the Club’s fortunes around.
2015 CLUB
OUT OF A CHALLENGING SEASON, A RECORD FOUR LIONS HAVE
EMERGED AS RECIPIENTS OF THE MERRETT-MURRAY MEDAL.
DAYNE BEAMS, STEFAN MARTIN, MITCH ROBINSON AND
DAYNE ZORKO WERE AWARDED JOINT MEDALLISTS AT THE
ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPION AWARDS DINNER IN SEPTEMBER.
From left to right: Kevin Murray, Dayne Beams, Stefan Martin, Mitch Robinson, Dayne Zorko and Roger Merrett
A FOUR-WAY TIE, FOUR VERY
DESERVING FOOTBALLERS
Never before in Brisbane Lions, Bears, or
Fitzroy history has there been a four-way tie.
Just four times in Fitzroy records (1883-1996)
have two players shared the honour, while the
Bears’ David Bain and Martin Leslie drew for a
two-way tie back in 1990. Justin Leppitsch and
Jason Akermanis claimed the award in 1999
as Lions and more recently Simon Black and
Michael Voss were joint winners in 2001.
Dayne Beams, recruited from Collingwood at
the end of 2014, played just 16 matches and
re-writes Club history as the first player to
claim the award having played less than 18
games. He is no stranger to receiving a best
and fairest award, having won the Pies’ 2012
Copeland Trophy.
The 25-year old averaged 28 disposals (13
contested) and 6.5 clearances a match despite
playing in a midfield often missing some of its
best players through injury, before requiring
season-ending shoulder surgery.
Dayne Zorko is the only player of the quartet
to have played every game this season. Martin
(20) was suspended for two matches and
Robinson (21) missed one match through injury.
Zorko finished runner-up last season and
claims his first Merrett-Murray Medal. A
Queenslander, he has averaged a career-best
22.95 disposals per game, including a season
high 38 disposals against Adelaide in Round 21.
Mitch Robinson was delisted by the Blues in
2014 and has proved to be a reliable
pick-up for the Lions. The 26-year-old has
led the way with his fearless attack; for his
21 games this season he has averaged 20.8
disposals and 6.76 tackles. Robinson also took
out the Players’ Player Award and the Shaun
Hart Most Competitive Player Award in a
breakout season at the Club.
Stefan Martin had an excellent second
season at the Lions, earning praise as one of
the competition’s best big men over the past
12 months, averaging 32.5 hit outs and 21
disposals from 20 matches in 2015. Martin
was also acknowledged as the Members’
Player of the Year.
Each of the four polled 130 votes, just two
votes clear of Allen Christensen (128) in his first
season at the Lions. Defender Marco Paparone
finished third with 120 votes. Lewis Taylor (117),
Harris Andrews (111), Jed Adcock (103) and
Justin Clarke (102) rounded out the top 10.
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS:
THE RISE OF
HARRIS ANDREWS
LIONS’ SUPPORTERS IN 2015
MOST
PROFESSIONAL
PLAYER
HARRIS, KING OF THE KIDS
The rise of Harris Andrews was the feelgood
story for Lions’ supporters in 2015.
Eighteen months ago, the tall teenager
was barely on the national radar; but now,
with 19 games under his belt, the 18-yearold
defender looks set to develop into
one of the games’ best young defenders.
Andrews’ excellent first year form was
recognised when he was presented with
the Rookie of the Year Award at the Club
Champion Awards in September.
ROOKIE
OF THE
YEAR
After receiving a Rising Star nomination
in Round 18 for his defensive work against
the more mature Geelong side and signing
a contract extension until the end of 2018,
from almost nowhere, the Brisbane-raised
product has given the club a key position
player for the next decade.
LESTER TAKES HOME AWARD
Ryan Lester’s recognition as Most Professional
Player at the Club Champion Awards was
reward for effort after a difficult year.
In his fifth AFL season, Lester has proven he
has the necessary drive and determination to
succeed at the elite level, despite suffering an
injury setback in Round 15 against the Swans in
the Reserves, sidelining him for the remainder
of the season.
Lester used the opportunity to thank those
departing the Lions, who had helped him along
the journey:
“Thanks to the people departing the Club at the
end of this year, both players and staff. Your
contributions have been enormous to this football
club and you’ll be sorely missed,” he said.
“To the members and the fans, thank you for
your support. It’s been a tough year, but good
times are around the corner. We appreciate
your support.”
IT’S BEEN A TOUGH YEAR, BUT GOOD
ROBBO REWARDED
He was described by Leigh Matthews as the
most selfless player in the AFL, and anyone
privileged to have known him will agree: Shaun
Hart epitomises all that is good about football.
The ultimate team player and professional, he
played 273 games, had seven top 10 finishes
in the Club Championship award and received
Life Membership. He is one of the all-time
greats of the Brisbane Lions and will forever be
remembered as the winner of the Norm Smith
Medal in the Club’s first premiership in 2001 and
a triple premiership icon.
Hart encountered a number of hurdles along the
road to success, however, and his AFL career
was nearly over before it began after, having
played just 17 games for the Brisbane Bears,
he was nearly overlooked by coach Robert
Walls for team selection in 1991. That Walls
stuck with Hart proved a master-stroke, and
the pocket-sized left-footer with the trademark
helmet repaid the faith every day thereafter.
The Lions’ Most Competitive Player Award is
now named in his honour, and this year it was
awarded to Mitch Robinson in recognition of
his professionalism and commitment to the
Brisbane Lions.
Robinson came to the Lions’ as a delisted free
agent from Carlton and has made the most
of the Lions’ lifeline. Speaking on the night,
Robinson said “I’m not blessed with a lot of
talent, I just like having a crack. My old man
taught me how to do it when I was a bit younger
playing for Lauderdale in the seniors.”
“I used to get bashed up a fair bit down there so
I just learnt to put my head over the ball and get
a free kick,” he quipped.
“I’m very happy for the award, but hopefully it
(success) is just around the corner.
“Stick with us, we’re not far off.”
O’BRIEN CLAIMS RESERVES’
BEST AND FAIREST
Zac O’Brien completed a second successful
season in the AFL system this year. At the
Lions’ Club Champion Awards in September
he polled the highest number of votes for a
Reserves player, eventually winning the Lions
Reserves Best and Fairest Award for 2015.
O’Brien finished with 55 votes – 34 more than
Rohan Bewick, who was the next best Lion
with 21 votes.
It was a terrific effort from O’Brien, who not
only missed seven games due to senior AFL
commitments, but was also part of a Lions side
that won just four games for the season.
Bewick’s result was also remarkable, given that
he had spent more than three quarters of the
season in the seniors, and played only a handful
of NEAFL matches.
Mitch Golby (16 votes), Liam Dawson (9) and
Tom Cutler (9) were other Lions to poll well on
the night.
“
TO THE FANS, I THANK
YOU, I KNOW WE’LL
STAY IN CONTACT
ALONG THE WAY...
FAREWELL
JED ADCOCK
“I STILL HAVE SOME AMAZING MEMORIES FROM THIS
FOOTBALL CLUB THAT I’LL KEEP DEAR WITH ME.”
Departing Lion Jed Adcock was acknowledged
for his long-standing commitment to the
Brisbane Lions at the Club Champion Awards
in September with a Recognition of Service
award. Speaking on the night, Adcock said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my twelve years and
met some amazing people along the way and
that’s what I think footy clubs are all about – the
relationships, the friends that you make along
the way, they stay with you forever.
“
I’LL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL
FOR THE OPPORTUNITY
I RECEIVED OVER THE
LAST 12 YEARS.
“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to play in
Premiership’s or enjoy the success the players
before me were able to have, but I still have
some amazing memories from this football club
that I’ll keep dear with me.”
Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels at pick
33 in the 2003 National Draft, Adcock spoke
about the importance of the relationships he
formed as an 18-year-old.
“I guess when you move up from country
Victoria you always need people close to you
to help you out and luckily enough Tim (Tim
Notting) was also from Ballarat so we sort of
had some ties back home which made it easier
for me to settle in,” Adcock said.
“Unfortunately you don’t quite get the fairytale
that everyone is after, but it’s a nice feeling to
be able to come up here and recognise the Club
and say thanks.
“To the fans, I thank you, I know we’ll stay in
contact along the way as I move through but
I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity I
received over the last 12 years.”
SMITH HONOURED
“I WAS A RUCKMAN, BACK POCKET AND THEY PUT
ME IN THE CENTRE. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO DO
THERE, I THINK I WAS A BALL WATCHER.”
2015 LIFE
MEMBERS
Ivan Smith, who was recognised as a Life
Member of the Brisbane Lions in September
2015, was recruited to Fitzroy from Robinvale
(a small country town on the border of Victoria
and New South Wales) in 1956 and went on to
play four games for the ‘Roys’.
He resigned from Fitzroy after just one season,
deciding to return to the bush and play local
football while pursuing a career as a police
officer. He returned to Melbourne in 1964
and approached Fitzroy about being involved
with the Club in a non-playing capacity. Smith
was appointed to the committee of the Past
DAD WANTED ONE OF HIS SONS TO
PLAY LEAGUE FOOTBALL, SO I MADE “HIM A VERY HAPPY MAN...
Players’ Association, a position he has held
for the best part of 50 years, serving as
Secretary since 1988.
Throughout the period of the merger in 1996,
he was instrumental in turning the Fitzroy Past
Players’ Association into the Fitzroy-Brisbane
Lions Past Players’ Association, ensuring and
expanding the recognition of players within
the group.
To this day he sits as Secretary of the
Association and, along with his wife Barbara,
dedicates considerable time to maintaining
strong levels of support for the Club and its long
list of past players.
On accepting his award, Mr Smith recalled his
time at the Club:
“Dad wanted one of his sons to play league
football, so I made him a very happy man.
“He came down each Saturday from Robinvale
to see me play,” Smith said.
“Some people ask, ‘what was your recollection
of your first game?’ – I don’t think I had a kick in
my first game,” he laughed.
“But I know my opponent didn’t have a kick
either. I think the reason for that was Kevin
Murray was playing along the flank next to me.
“I was a ruckman, back pocket and they put me
in the centre. I had no idea what to do there, I
think I was a ball watcher.
“Kevin had the ball all the time, he looked after
his man, my man, and any other fella who was
floating about,” he quipped.
“I’ve derived a great amount of enjoyment
from this particular job, this is an honour,
I really treasure it and I know my family
will be very pleased.”
PIKE COMES HOME
MARTIN PIKE WAS HONOURED AS
A LIFE MEMBER OF THE BRISBANE
LIONS AT THE CLUB CHAMPION
AWARDS LAST MONTH.
Pike was drafted to the Lions in 2000 as a
mature-age recruit after playing stints at
Melbourne (1993-94), Fitzroy (1995-96) and the
Kangaroos (1997-2000). His arrival in Brisbane
sparked debate about whether the 28-year-old
– who won Fitzroy’s Best and Fairest in 1996 –
was past his prime. Pike proved, however, that
his best was yet to come, going on to play 106
matches for Brisbane (for a career total of 247).
“
IT MEANS SO MUCH WHEN
YOU’VE PLAYED AT A FEW CLUBS TO
ACTUALLY FIND A REAL HOME.
More importantly, Pike’s recruitment directly
coincided with the Lions’ historic hat-trick of
premierships – and the South Australian played
a key role in each of them.
Pike said he was honoured to receive the award.
“It means so much when you’ve played at a few
clubs to actually find a real home.
“I’ve always said I was a Brisbane Lions man
and now it’s actually confirmed,” he said.
“When you think of the three flags we were
able to achieve in that time, they were great
days, they were the glory days.
“If I was to leave one message to the current
playing list – you are in your glory days right
now, make the most of it.
“It wasn’t a great season but you can get back
next year and, you never know, you might be like
the West Coast Eagles and play off in finals.”
Pike offered the support of the Lions’ former
players in his address to the Club and its players:
“All past players who aren’t coaching against
you are definitely behind you, so good luck with
your journey in football.”
Ben Keays
“I’LL ENJOY THE UNCERTAINTY AND THE PRESSURE”
SAYS LIONS’ ACADEMY PROSPECT KEAYS.
Ben Keays was already a Brisbane Lions
supporter when he moved from Melbourne to
Brisbane as a five-year-old in 2002. His dad
grew up a Fitzroy fan, and Keays attended the
2001 Grand Final when the Club clinched a
breakthrough premiership win.
They went again to the Grand Final in 2004,
when the Lions’ run of three flags came to an
end. “I was bawling my eyes out when we
lost,” Keays said. “That was a sad day.”
Keays joined the Hyundai Help for Kids Lions
Academy a couple of years after moving to
Brisbane, and has played with the Club’s
NEAFL team over the past two seasons. He still
shakes his head at the heroes he’s been able
to play with and meet in his time around the
Lions so far.
“Early on it was really weird. But I’ve loved
every minute of it, rubbing shoulders with all
the players and now that I’ve got to know the
first-year players and the guys playing in the
NEAFL a lot better, it feels like if I was to go to
Brisbane at the end of the year the transition
would be really smooth,” Keays said.
“You walk past Simon Black, who’s one of the
midfield coaches, and he stops and says hello.
That’s when you think ‘This is pretty crazy,
Blacky’s just stopped me in the corridor and
having a chat to me’.”
The Lions will get first access to make Keays a
permanent member of the Club at November’s
NAB AFL Draft. As a member of their academy
program, the Lions will be able to match a bid
for him whenever it comes on draft night.
Ben Keays is tackled in the Under 18 match Queensland vs. Tasmania
The prolific and hard-working midfielder
would be pleased to join the club he grew up
supporting, but is open to going elsewhere too.
“I’d love to [go to the Lions]. I know every kid
says it, but being the footy lover I am, I wouldn’t
mind going anywhere,” Keays said.
“But it would be awesome to join the Lions
and play with some of my mates from last year
like Harris Andrews and Liam Dawson and all
those boys.”
Alongside fellow possible top-20 Lions
Academy player Eric Hipwood, Keays will
experience the bidding system differently to
Academy players of the past, with the AFL to
introduce live bidding for the first time at this
year’s draft.
Keays has gotten his head around the complex
process – “I don’t know the exact points and all
that, but I get the concept” – and thinks it will
be more exciting than finding out in October, as
had previously been the case for highly-rated
Academy prospects.
“Hopefully I get to experience it like every other
kid. Now that they’ve done that, it’s good that
we all get to have the same kind of emotions
and uncertainty around our future,” he said.
“I reckon it’s pretty fair and I think it’ll be a
good night. I’ll enjoy the uncertainty and the
pressure.”
The club that ends up with Keays, should it be
the Lions or another, will know the player they
are getting: he’s a busy midfielder who works
up and down the ground, digs into packs, rips
the ball out, slides forward to kick goals and
performs every week.
He captained Queensland to its division two title
at this year’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships,
averaged 29 disposals and five clearances
across the three games and won the Harrison
Medal as the best player of the group.
Keays, whose father is a cousin of former
Collingwood and Richmond player Terry Keays,
is disciplined and determined, traits that also
have him interested in joining the Australian
Army. Footy will probably put those hopes
on hold, but it remains something he’d like to
pursue in the future.
“That’s always been an interest of mine. Early on
in my life it was either footy or that just because
it’s a physically demanding job,” Keays said.
“It’s kind of similar to footy but it’s making a
difference, it’s helping out people and doing all
that. Obviously if footy didn’t work out that’d
definitely be something I’d explore.”
For now, making the AFL is the goal. Keays’
under-18 season finished recently, but he still
has one game to go, as a part of the Allies’
team that meets the NAB AFL Academy squad
(prospects eligible for the 2016 draft). The Grand
Final curtain-raiser will be played at the MCG
hours before the AFL premiership is decided.
“Jacob Allison and Jack Rolls are two Brisbane
academy players playing for the under-17s, so it’ll
be good to come up against them,” Keays said.
PLAYERS AT THE END OF 2015,
WITH MATT MAGUIRE,
BRENT STAKER AND LUKE MCGUANE
ANNOUNCING THEIR RETIREMENTS
FAREWELL
TO THREE LIONS
BRENT STAKER
BRENT STAKER ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT IN FRONT
OF THE BRISBANE LIONS PLAYING GROUP IN AUGUST
AFTER 13 YEARS ON THE FIELD AND 160 GAMES.
The key position player began his career at the
West Coast Eagles in 2003, where he played
110 games and kicked 84 goals. Speaking on his
time in the West, Staker remarked:
“I had seven years of my career there, I gave my
heart there. I really appreciate everyone I met
there, they’ve been fantastic.”
Staker was traded to Brisbane in 2009, and
despite a wretched run with injury, remained
a valuable member of the Lions’ side – his
versatility enabling him to play at either end of
the ground.
“I’ve had six years here. To get drafted once
is extremely lucky, but to get picked up again,
I consider (that) winning the lotto twice. I love
this footy club for taking me in and giving me the
opportunity it has.”
“Special mention to the Lions medical team. I
think the only injury I had was a broken thumb at
West Coast. Since I’ve been at the Lions they’ve
had to put up with countless problems. I couldn’t
have asked for better support.”
“It’s not easy retiring and I had mixed emotions
coming into the week. But I’ve obviously loved
every part of my career, I wouldn’t change it -
everyone I’ve met, people outside of footy, the
footy fraternity has been unreal.”
The boy from Broken Hill paid special thanks to
his family, who had shown great support despite
being unable to attend the majority of his games.
“Lastly, I’d like to thank my family, they’ve been
really good, a great support. I’ve played 160
games and they’ve only seen about 20, so that’s
tough for me. I love them very much.”
Speaking to the team, Staker reflected on his
recent run of injuries, and emphasised how
grateful he was for the support shown by the
Club and its support staff.
TO FINISH OFF MY CAREER UP
HERE WITH MY FAMILY AROUND
ME, TO PLAY OVER 100 GAMES OF
AFL, I COULDN’T BE HAPPIER.
LUKE McGUANE
QUEENSLANDER LUKE MCGUANE PLAYED 112 GAMES OVER AN
ELEVEN YEAR AFL CAREER – 105 OF THOSE FOR RICHMOND –
AFTER BEING SELECTED AT NO.36 IN THE 2004 NATIONAL DRAFT.
The 28-year-old forward kicked 7 goals in four
games this year (McGuane joined the Lions
at the start of 2014 and has been severely
restricted by a series of left knee problems) and
was keen to play on next season until a training
mishap left him with damage to his ‘good’ right
knee. Speaking on the abrupt end to his AFL
career, McGuane remarked:
“I wanted to play on next year until this injury
at training yesterday snuffed out any thought of
that. My body has given up on me and as much
as I’d love to continue to play on it’s clear my
body won’t deal with it.
“I’m obviously really disappointed – getting
back out there and playing the last 4 games
has been incredibly enjoyable, and something
I wasn’t sure was going to happen after all the
injuries I’ve had over the last few years.
“I’ll have very fond memories of my career
and be happy to have got to play so long
in the AFL system… I feel blessed to have had
such a long career in the AFL.”
McGuane made his senior debut against Sydney
in Round 7 of 2006, but managed just two games
for the season. He became a more regular
fixture in the Tigers’ lineup from 2007, where he
held down a third-tall position in the backline.
In 2012, he was swung forward and kicked
15 goals from nine games. He continued his
promising form in attack in 2013, when he
kicked a career-best 20 goals from 12 games
- which included three in a half against the
Brisbane Lions in Round 20 at the MCG.
After nine seasons and 105 games with
Richmond, McGuane exercised his right as
a free agent to return home to Queensland
and join the Lions. He was selected to play
in Brisbane’s second NAB Challenge match
against Gold Coast, and made an immediate
impression with three first quarter goals -
including a ‘goal of the year’ contender from
the boundary.
McGuane was prominent again in his
second pre-season outing against Sydney at
Burpengary, however a knee injury forced him
to spend an extended period on the sidelines. He
was eventually named to make his Lions debut
in the team’s Easter Thursday night blockbuster,
which happened to be against his old side,
Richmond. He went on to play three consecutive
games but continued to struggle with injury.
A pre-season injury to his troublesome left knee
in 2015 again meant that McGuane’s play was
restricted in his final AFL season; he returned
to the senior side in Round 19, kicking 3 goals in
a narrow loss to the Gold Coast Suns.
“The players and coaches at Richmond early in
my career, I couldn’t thank them enough. I had
an amazing time in my decade at Richmond, and
then to finish off my career in Brisbane with my
family and new teammates was also really good
for me,” said McGuane.
“It’s been hard too because I’ve been injured
for 90% of my time here but it was great to
finish off my career up here with my family
around me. To play over 100 games of AFL, I
couldn’t be happier.”
MAGUIRE WAS HONOURED WITH
A LAP OF HONOUR AT THE GABBA
DURING THE HALFTIME BREAK
OF THE MATCH AGAINST THE
ADELAIDE CROWS IN ROUND 13.
MATT MAGUIRE
BRISBANE LIONS VETERAN DEFENDER MATT MAGUIRE
ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT FROM AFL IN JUNE.
The 31-year-old backman, who played 170
senior games at St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions,
made his decision after experiencing persistent
symptoms relating to concussion (Maguire was
concussed in a NEAFL game against Ainslie at
Coorparoo on April 25).
Lions medical staff, in consultation with
concussion specialists, were confident
Maguire would make a full recovery but the
unpredictability of the symptoms meant it was
unclear when he would be ready to play again.
“I can’t get out there and play footy so the
decision was made pretty easily for me,”
Maguire told the playing group.
“I can be proud of what I’ve been able to
achieve in footy. I’ve been able to come to this
point and be proud that I’ve been able to get the
most out of myself.
“If you can get to the end of your career and say
that, then you can be quite content and happy to
move on to the next phase of your life with a big
smile on your face and relish that you’ve had so
many great memories and good friendships.”
Affectionately known as “Goose”, Maguire
began his career in 2002 with St Kilda and
played 99 games before a badly broken leg
halted his career. He fought back to full fitness
and was signed by the Brisbane Lions at the end
of 2009 – his trademark aggression and physical
presence have proved valuable during his 71
senior games for the Club.
Last year, Maguire started in Reserves before
playing thirteen of the final 15 senior games
of the season. He underwent ankle surgery
at the end of 2014 and played two senior
games in 2015.
“I’ve been really fortunate to play for two great
Clubs – I’ve loved my time here at the Lions,”
said Maguire.
“It’s been great to be able to continually
challenge myself and get the best out of myself
for the past six years. And to get the support
from everyone at the Club … there’s so many
people who have helped me along the way. I’m
really thankful for that.”
Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch said Maguire had
left a great legacy in helping develop the Club’s
current crop of young defenders.
“There’s not many players who can have the
resilience to stay in the game, and to sign six
one-year contracts in a row,” said Leppitsch.
“This Club is better for having Goose in it. The
next generation here can take a lot out of what
you’ve given them over the last few years.”
Maguire was honoured with a Lap of Honour
at the GABBA during the halftime break of the
match against the Adelaide Crows in Round 13.
A BLOW CLOSE TO HOME
Michael Close’s third season was cut short in Round 2 when he injured his ACL in
the Lions’ loss to the Kangaroos. After the Lions kicked three of the game’s first
four goals, the Roos put their foot down, kicking eight straight goals in less than
a quarter and 19 of the next 23 to set up an imposing 20.13 (133) to 7.9 (51) final
margin. Close’s injury sparked debate about the quality of the playing surface at
Etihad Stadium, and also exposed Brisbane’s vulnerabilities in the forward line as
the Lions were left without a key forward.
THAT WINNING FEELING
It was an occasion to remember as the Lions held off a fast finishing Carlton to
claim their first win of 2015 in Round Six. After a disastrous start to the season,
the Lions rallied and lifted themselves from the bottom of the ladder, surprising
the crumbling Blues with a 9-point win. New recruits Dayne Beams, Mitch
Robinson and Allen Christensen revelled in their first win at the Club (alongside
Harris Andrews in just his fourth game).
Mitch Robinson, who kicked three goals. The former Blue, who was delisted at the
The Lions increased a 12-point lead to 35 points in a stunning third term
against the Blues in Round 20. Brisbane kicked eight unanswered goals,
including two brilliant passages of play from the fleet-footed Dayne Zorko,
whose celebrations woke up the GABBA crowd. The win also meant that
the Lions avoided equalling their club record streak of 12 consecutive
The Bulldogs trailed by 15 points at the last change in the Lions’ final clash of the
quarter to hit the lead, but the Lions would not be denied. Adcock’s brilliant threebounce
goal from outside 50m with five minutes remaining gave the Lions the
lead, which they never relinquished. It was also a fitting farewell for Adcock, who
had been a loyal servant of the Lions for twelve years.
THE LAMBERTS
“CRAIG AND MELISSA HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BEING
THE BEST AT WHAT THEY DO IN THE WELFARE SPACE.”
Craig Lambert with Andrew Bews
AUSTIN TURNS
FROM SWAN TO LION
Leigh Matthews speaking to Craig Lambert
Craig Lambert has returned to the Brisbane
Lions as Strategy and Retention Manager
alongside wife Melissa, who will begin work
as Player Welfare Manager when the playing
group return in November.
Lambert played 96 of his 219 senior games for
Brisbane and was a Club Champion winner at
both the Lions and Richmond.
The 47-year-old served as an assistant coach
under Leigh Matthews during the Premiership
years, when he was highly regarded for his work
in the areas of player development and welfare.
He had been working at Greater Western
Sydney as Player Welfare Manager, with
Melissa also employed in the welfare
department. Both have been credited with
playing a major role in embedding a strong
culture at the fledgling club.
Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann welcomed the
appointment of the Lamberts, reflecting that:
“Craig and Melissa have a reputation for being
the best at what they do in the welfare space.
THE LIONS ANNOUNCED IN
SEPTEMBER THAT DAMIEN
AUSTIN WILL REPLACE
THE DEPARTING BRETT
BURTON AS THE NEW HIGH
PERFORMANCE MANAGER.
Austin comes to the Lions from the Sydney
Swans, having worked as a part of that club’s
high performance team for four seasons.
CEO Greg Swann said he is confident that
Austin will provide the expertise and experience
of off-field leadership necessary to propel the
Club forward next season and beyond.
“We are satisfied that along with Matthew
Francis (Football Manager), Craig Lambert
(Strategy and Retention Manager) and Melissa
Lambert (Player Welfare Manager) we have the
right team to take the Club forward.”
It’s an area we have identified as needing to
improve and we believe the work done by the
Lamberts here in Brisbane, and then in recent
years at GWS, shows they are a perfect fit for
our Club right now.”
“Damien has an impressive work history,
having come to us from the Swans but prior
to this working for the Sydney Roosters,
Queensland Reds and consulting with the NSW
Swifts Netball team,” Swann said.
MEMBERS EXPERIENCE
IN VICTORIA
The Brisbane Lions remained committed to
providing its Victorian-based members with
more opportunities to help enhance their
match-day experience in 2015.
Although there were some obvious constraints
in what can be offered as the ‘away team’ in
Melbourne, the Club was still able to implement
some new initiatives at games.
This included, for the first time, negotiating an
exclusive Lions-only seating area in the General
Admission areas at Etihad Stadium and the MCG
to help members and supporters sit amongst
each other. While this facility has long been
offered in designated reserved seat sections,
these areas were free and required nothing
more than simply scanning into the ground.
There were also a couple of after-match
functions (held in Rounds 6 and 8), a Women
of the Pride pre-game cocktail event prior to
the MCG game in Round 16, countless coterie
group get-togethers, and the regular ‘road trip’
bus service to Geelong.
The Club also recognised its Victorian members
at the MCG in Round 16 – the team’s final
match in Melbourne – with a special members’
guard of honour, big screen messages from the
players, and a competition that saw five lucky
members invited into the rooms after the match.
WELCOME TO 2016
A BRAND NEW OPPORTUNITY
TO BE PART OF SOMETHING
AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE
AT YOUR CLUB!
The Women of the Pride group aims to bring like-minded
individuals together – to give us a chance to swap ideas, share
stories, spark inspiration and as a platform to network and meet
new people whilst supporting the Brisbane Lions.
In 2015 we launched the Women of the Pride group at the Gabba
in early March with a veritable who’s who of Brisbane on hand
and a goal of achieving 100 members in its inaugural year
– we reached over 552 by the end of the season.
The Club also trialled a pre-game social club
facility in the Studio Room at Etihad Stadium
prior to the Western Bulldogs match in Round 12
with great success. Around 200 people popped
in for a drink before the game, and heard from
former greats Kevin Murray and Chris Johnson.
Before other Etihad Stadium matches, fans
were encouraged to meet up at The Mail
Exchange Hotel on Bourke Street.
THANK YOU, VICTORIA
Thanks to all our loyal Victorian-based members and fans
for their continued support in 2015!
In 2016 we look forward to bringing you not only fantastic events,
but also a community to be part of.
40 YEARS OF
RED, BLUE, AND GOLD
FITZROY
SPIRIT
ALIVE
THE BRISBANE LIONS’ ROUND 16 MATCH AGAINST MELBOURNE PROVED AN
EMOTIONAL ONE FOR MANY OF THE OLD ‘ROYBOYS’, AS THE CLUB DONNED
A COMMEMORATIVE 40 TH ANNIVERSARY FITZROY-STYLE GUERNSEY.
THE BRISBANE LIONS CONTINUED TO BUILD ON THEIR
RELATIONSHIP WITH BOTH FITZROY FC, WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE
VAFA PREMIER B DIVISION, AND THE FITZROY JUNIORS IN 2015.
The guernsey was designed to celebrate 40 years
since Fitzroy first wore the red, blue, and gold
colours – to coincide with the introduction of
colour TV.
It was the first time that the famous ‘FFC’
monogram had appeared in a senior AFL match
at the home of football since 2007.
“It’s a terrific honour for us to wear this guernsey
and honour the incredible history that lives on in
our Club,” Vice-Captain Pearce Hanley said upon
launching the jumper alongside all-time Fitzroy
greats Kevin Murray and Garry Wilson.
Murray described the jumper as “magic”,
Wilson said it was “brilliant” that the Lions
continued to celebrate Fitzroy’s history.
Pearce Hanley helps launch the Fitzroy commemorative
guernsey with Fitzroy greats Garry Wilson and Kevin Murray.
IT’S AN HONOUR
Pearce Hanley, Kevin Murray and Garry Wilson launched
the new Fitzroy Jumper that was worn in Round 16.
The match also corresponded with the Club’s
annual Past Player Reunion event, which
brought around 150 former players, coaches
and officials from all arms of the Lions’ history
together for a private game-day function.
Unfortunately the Lions were defeated on
this occasion against Melbourne, who were
coincidentally coached by another former
Royboy in Paul Roos.
Teams from both the senior and junior clubs
play at the Club’s spiritual heartland in Victoria
– the Brunswick Street Oval – and their games
generally attract a healthy crowd of the old
Fitzroy faithful.
On the field, Fitzroy FC seniors finished sixth –
two games shy of Finals – but proved that they
could match it with the best at times throughout
the season. 2015 also proved a landmark year
for Fitzroy, who fielded their first ever women’s
team in the Victorian Women’s Football League.
Meanwhile, the Fitzroy Juniors further
enhanced their standing as one of the most
successful junior clubs in Victoria by competing
in five Grand Finals and producing three
premierships in 2015 – U12 gold, U13 red, and
U14 black.
Coaches from both Fitzroy FC, Fitzroy Juniors
and the Brisbane Lions came together in
June to share some ideas in a popular new
initiative between the clubs, while the Club also
sponsored youngster Luke Baker, who is in his
second year with Fitzroy’s senior team.
50 players from the Fitzroy Juniors formed the guard of honour for
the Brisbane Lions back in Round 12 against the Western Bulldogs
The Fitzroy Juniors also got a taste of the big
time back in Round 12 when 50 of their players
were invited to form a guard of honour for
the senior Lions team prior to the Western
Bulldogs match at Etihad Stadium.
The Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society
went from strength to strength in 2015,
reaching 340 members (plus 27 Life Patrons),
hosting four fabulous functions, building new
displays at the Museum located at Etihad
Stadium, and unearthing a range of previously
unseen artefacts from the old Fitzroy days.
The Historical Society’s regular evenings at the
Fitzroy Bowling Club once again proved a huge
success, with special guests including Michael
Gale, Warwick Irwin, Martin Pike, Ian McCrae,
Ross Thornton, Leon Harris, Laurie Serafini,
Grant Lawrie, and Jamie Cooper.
Around 350 guests also turned out for their
annual Museum Dinner, which was themed
around Fitzroy’s days at the Junction Oval, and
featured a star-studded line-up headlined by
Kevin Murray, Paul Roos, Garry Wilson, Robert
The Historical Society plays a key role in
preserving the Club’s rich heritage, and wouldn’t
be possible without the tireless efforts of
MEMBER’S
MONTH
VICTORIAN
MEMBERS
MEMBERS WHO ATTENDED EVERY HOME GAME AT
THE GABBA WERE REWARDED WITH AN EXCLUSIVE
BEHIND THE SCENES MEET AND GREET.
VICTORIAN MEMBERS WERE RECOGNISED AND
REWARDED DURING THE ROUND 16 CLASH VS
MELBOURNE AT THE MCG AS PART OF OUR
ANNUAL VICTORIAN MEMBERS ROUND.
The whole month of August was declared
Members’ Month by the Club, as a way to
thank them for their loyalty and support in 2015,
with prizes and experiences given away to a
member each day.
To complement this, Members’ Round in Round
23 v Bulldogs was all about our members, with
a range of member exclusive activities and
promotions including a Member-Only Open
Training Session, Guard of Honour as the team
ran out, Member Coin Toss, half-time Lap of
Honour, Junior Member Scavenger Hunt, lucky
door prizes at Gate 9 and player visits at the
Members Bar. In total, 225 members were
rewarded with a prize or experience throughout
the month of August and Members Round.
As part of the members’ attendance program,
22 members who attended every home game
at the Gabba were rewarded with an exclusive
behind the scenes meet and greet experience
with players following the Lions’ exciting Round
23 victory over the Western Bulldogs. These
members got to watch the team sing the Club
song, meet with the players in the dressing room
after the match, and were also presented with
a match-worn signed Guernsey by a playing
player, as a token of their loyalty and support.
50 Loyal Lion members were selected at random
to form a pre-game Guard of Honour and were
granted the rare opportunity to stand on the
hallowed MCG turf and cheer the team on as
they ran through the banner. The recognition
didn’t stop there either, with five lucky members
invited into the ‘inner sanctum’ after the match
to receive a signed guernsey from one of the
players. Captain Tom Rockliff, Dayne Zorko,
Daniel Rich, Pearce Hanley and Jed Adcock all
made time post-game to personally thank each
of the five lucky members for their unwavering
commitment to the Club.
The Brisbane Lions would like to thank all of
its 25,452 members in 2015 for their continued
support this year, and we look forward to
seeing you all again in 2016!
ALL AUSTRALIAN / TEAM OF THE YEAR
At the end of the 1953 Australian Football Carnival in Adelaide, the first official All Australian team was selected from the best performed players. The practice continued after each such series until the 1988 Bicentenary Carnival in Adelaide.
In 1982, the first AFL team of the year was chosen by the Victorian selectors. With the development of the national competition, the concept was changed slightly and in 1991 the first AFL All Australian team was selected.
