Yeats Poetry & Art Competition
Sligo Youthreach
On Wednesday 24th June,
Youthreach Sligo was delighted
to meet the prize-winners of
the Yeats 2015 poetry and art
competition in the Glasshouse
hotel Sligo.
There were 3 categories to the
competition: Poetry, Art and
3D model/sculpture. Students
were asked to write their own
original poem but had to
include a line from any of the
Yeats poetry collection.
Suzanne Doolan from Youthreach
Kiltimagh read her
very powerful winning poem
“Everyone’s Best Friend”
before accepting her 1st prize
of an IPad.
Adam Finane, Dean Fogarty
and Alan Higgins from Youthreach
Cabra came second
with their poem “My Giants
Causeway”. Tommy Jordan
from Dundalk Youthreach
claimed third prize with his
poem “Foot to the Floor”.
Youthreach Kiltimagh had two
winners in the art section of
the competition. Anthony Mulvenna
came first, Ellen Collins
came second and Thomas
Cleary from Youthreach Ballinrobe
came third.
Youthreach Ballinrobe had
another proud moment when
Vronika Geneviclute took home
first prize in the 3D section.
Sapphire and Jasmine Fitch
who travelled all the way from
Youthreach Roscrea came
second and Celina Harty also
from Roscrea came third.
Youthreach Sligo would like to
congratulate the winners but
also each young person who
participated in the competition
and made it such a huge
success. Many thanks also to
the tutors who encouraged
and assisted their students.
Every entry has been included
in a booklet which will be
distributed to Youthreach centres
nationwide. Youthreach
Sligo would like to thank Nigel
Reape Office Supplies and
Print based in Knockmore,
Ballina for his professional
advice in putting this book
together.
We would also like to say a
big thank you to Colm Keegan
from Poetry Ireland who
travelled from Dublin to hold
a highly entertaining creative
writing workshop with the
group. Colm had a captive audience,
when he read extracts
from his gritty and moving
book “Don’t go there”. A word
of thanks also to E.O of Mayo,
Sligo, Leitrim E.T.B, Mary
Madden who took the time to
address the group and meet
the participants. Finally a word
of appreciation to Sligo Credit
Union and Irma Mulvihill for
their generous sponsorship of
the competition.
Well done everybody, we look
forward to doing it all again
next year..!!!!
