WGM#38 NOV/DEC 2015

The Macau gaming industry is synonymous with junkets. First started by none other than Stanley Ho in the 1960s, these junkets and the VIP gamblers they provide have played a vital role in Macau’s rise over the past decade. However, the recent downturn has changed the landscape in this unique part of the world with the junket business suffering more than any other and a number of VIP rooms being forced to close in Macau over the past 12 months. So what does the future hold? In this issue of WGM, we speak exclusively to the Chairman of one of Macau’s biggest junket operators Tak Chun Group, Mr Levo Chan, about the current gaming climate, his expectations for the coming years and why Tak Chun has expanded while other junkets have slowed right down. Poker fans will enjoy our lengthy and intriguing interview with World Series of Poker (WSOP) Tournament Director Jack Effel who explains just how much goes into organizing the world’s biggest tournament series each and every year as well as regaling us with some of his favorite stories from the past. We tackle the smoking debate as Macau’s legislators decide whether to allow smoking in specially designated smoking lounges or ban the habit altogether, while our responsible gambling series sees us visit one of Macau’s main problem gambling treatment centres. In sport, we look at Manchester United’s big gamble on teen star Anthony Martial as well as examining which of the world’s major sports would benefit most from cracking the lucrative Chinese market. And our resident party animal tells us all about one of Macau’s newest trendy nightspots – Ritz-Carlton Bar & Lounge.

Fate in the cards: understanding baccarat trends PART 2
‘long banker’ or ‘long player’ respectively. It doesn’t
matter whether the streak is banker or player, the
key colour rule factor is that it is long.
The colour rules simply state that for streak continuers
(in the big road), the result of the next symbol in big eye
boy is red for ‘connected’ and ‘long’, and blue for ‘one
lounge, two bedrooms’. See figure 7 below (note figures 1
to 6 were in part 1 of this article).
Figure 7: Rules for determining the next colour to appear in ‘big
eye boy’ upon appearance of streak continuers in the big road
Note the colours of the circles in the big road are
irrelevant, which is why they are shown in black instead
of the usual red and blue.
Now you know the colour rule for streak continuers,
you can learn the colour rule for streak starters. The colour
to be added to big eye boy after a streak starter is simply
the opposite colour to the one that would have been added
had the previous streak continued. See figures 8, 9 and 10.
What about the situation when a streak starter
immediately follows another streak starter? This is a ping
pong situation. The colour of the symbol to be added to big
eye boy for the first two symbols of the ping pong could
be red or blue depending on the length of the two prior
streaks, but once we get to the third hand and onwards in
the ping pong, the symbol added to big eye boy must be
red. As long as the shoe continues to ping pong, big eye
boy will continue to be filled with a streak of red symbols.
Given the colour rules explained above, you should be
able to prove this ping pong result to yourself (hint: the
answer is in figure 9).
Now you understand the colour rules for adding
symbols to big eye boy, it is easy to understand the
colour rules for adding symbols to the small road and the
cockroach road. They are identical to the rules for big eye
boy, with one fundamental difference. Under big eye boy,
we always compared to the previous column in the big road
to determine the colour of the next symbol. With the small
road, we compare not to the previous column, but to the
column before that. With the cockroach road, we compare
to the column yet another column back. So big eye boy
looks one column back, the small road looks two columns
back, and the cockroach road looks three columns back.
