If we believe<br />

California is a land<br />

of opportunity,<br />

we must also<br />

acknowledge that<br />

this rate of progress<br />

is unacceptable.<br />

As a state with the<br />

fifth largest Black<br />

population in the<br />

country, we must do<br />

more and we must<br />

do better.<br />

As a nation, we hold equality, fairness, and hard work as important values.<br />

Yet while we believe that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed,<br />

the sad truth is that they don’t. A Black child, whether rich or poor, faces<br />

barriers to success in school and life, from cradle to career. And if that<br />

child comes from a low-income family, she faces a double disadvantage.<br />

Improving our education system is not just a matter of one “fix.” All<br />

Black children need effective teachers, rigorous coursework, academic<br />

supports and enrichment, safe learning environments, and more if they<br />

are to get the world-class education they deserve. Countless individuals<br />

know this. The efforts by organizations, school districts, and universities<br />

showcased in this report are just a fraction of the powerful work being<br />

done in communities around California. These groups are successfully<br />

chipping away at disparities and inequities in schools. However, if we<br />

continue to chip away at the rate we are, it will be decades before we<br />

erase opportunity and achievement gaps. If we believe California is a<br />

land of opportunity, we must also acknowledge that this rate of progress<br />

is unacceptable. As a state with the fifth largest Black population in the<br />

country, we must do more and we must do better.<br />

The recommendations proposed here challenge district and state<br />

leaders to address the systemic inequities bearing down on young Black<br />

Californians. Both the report and the recommendations included in it are<br />

intended to be part of a larger effort that addresses educational disparities<br />

with the sense of fierce urgency our students deserve.<br />

What will this take? It will take amplifying the voices of students,<br />

community members, and parents who know from their lived experience<br />

what these statistics look and feel like. It will take a coordinated,<br />

concerted effort by educators, administrators, researchers, elected<br />

officials, and policymakers to prioritize equity. It will take a collective<br />

agreement that the future will be far brighter for all Californians if we<br />

ignite young Black minds today.<br />
