FREE PERSONAL SAFETY APP
LAUNCHED IN GLOUCESTER TO
SAVE LIVES
A free app for smartphones has been designed to protect both men and women from
possible danger.
Hollie Guard turns your smartphone into an advanced personal safety device at the touch
of a button. If in danger simply shake your phone to generate an alert, your location,
audio and video evidence of the incident will automatically be sent to your emergency
contact via text and email. Shake it again and it sends out a high pitched alarm and the
flash starts to strobe, in order to attract maximum attention. From the moment Hollie
Guard is activated, your location is tracked and can be viewed in real time by your
emergency contact. Evidence is not stored on the smartphone but on secure servers so
that it can be used as future as evidence.
Hollie Guard also contains many other features including:
If travelling the Journey feature allows you to notify your friends, family and co-workers of
your movements. An email or text will be generated and sent to your emergency contacts
when you have safely completed your journey.
Meetings allow you to identify when you are going to a meeting or working alone. An alert
will automatically be created if the timer expires or you do not cancel the meeting.
Man down facility provides extra protection for users in situations where injury or
personal immobilisation is possible by flagging sudden deceleration, non-movement and
impact.
Hollie Guard is ideal for children, teenagers, athletes, lone workers, stalking and domestic
violence victims.
Hollie Guard was developed by Panic Guard Ltd for the Hollie Gazzard Trust and is named
after Hollie. The Hollie Gazzard Trust was set up after the murder of Hollie Gazzard at
her salon in Gloucester in 2014 by her then boyfriend – Asher Maslin, who had actively
stalked Hollie during an abusive relationship. Hollies’ father Nick is the chairman of the
trust and believes this app will make a difference. “It is another weapon against domestic
abuse and stalking and will surely save lives,” he said. “It will make the users feel safer
when out there and this is what we want. Video and voice recording will also be extremely
useful if evidence is required at a later date. Making the app free to download will not
prevent anyone owning a smartphone from having this essential facility.”
Hollie Guard is being backed by Gloucestershire Police and the Police and Crime
Commissioner Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, of our Public Protection Bureau
said “Hollieguard is an exciting step forward in personal safety and as a consequence
we are working with the Hollie Gazzard Trust to explore a number of options for using
this application. We see huge value whether you are a victim of domestic abuse or
indeed simply want to take steps to ensure you are protected as you go about your life.
Empowerment and personal responsibility are all important and this application fits into
that modern world.”
Taking on Facebook!
Nick Gazzard has asked facebook to remove pictures on his daughters, Hollie’s facebook
account of her ex partner who murdered her. Facebook memorialised Hollie’s account
following her death last year and the family have been trying to get access to the account
and have the offending photos removed. We have had support from many media outlets
including the BBC and the issue was highlighted on Points West Inside Out programme last
week. Despite this Facebook are unwilling to budge.
According Facebook’s website, its policy is that when a profile is memorialised following
someone’s death, any changes are not able to be made. A Facebook spokesperson said:
“We memorialise accounts to provide a place of remembrance. “We understand in tragic
cases such as this it may mean there are painful reminders but memorialised accounts
are designed to preserve the privacy of the deceased.” They have also said that if the
family want the photos removed, they will delete the account. This is not something that
the family want because there are so many memories on Hollie’s account for her family
and friends to enjoy. Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for Facebook to
remove pictures of Hollie Gazzard’s killer ex-boyfriend from her profile. The petition went
live on change.org and so far, it has been signed by over 10,000 people.
The petition states: “We have all seen the press and are disappointed with Facebook’s
response to our request. If you feel the same and want to help us please sign this petition
to have the pictures of Hollie Gazzard’s killer removed from her Facebook page. Thank
you.”
Nick said: “It makes me feel sick when I look at those photos, and to be truthful I try not
to go into her Facebook site as I get quite distressed by it. We would like to continue to
remember the good times we had with her but are left traumatised when you see her with
him.”
He is determined to find a way to have them removed and is working with web specialists
to find away through.
Please sign the petition by going to change.org.

Well what an exciting time it is here at The Serenity Suite. Since my last editorial we
have been improving the salon in many ways! Our newest treatment is the Dermaco
Electrical facial machine. Which has been so popular with clients of all ages. All of
them seeing wonderful improvements in their skin conditions. As well as that we are
extending the salon giving us 3 more treatment rooms, so 7 in total!
The 3 new rooms will be for Electrical Facials, Sunbed use and a Training room.
The training room will be for us to do in salon staff training if and when necessary
and also to run courses for people who may prefer a more one on one training
experience. We are very excited to be doing this and cannot wait to share pictures
with you when it is all done!
The Electrical facials are just wonderful. And because we can help all ages and
a wide range of skin concerns it means many many clients are able to enjoy the
experience with us, and improve their skin! Many people see results with just 1
session. The best results are achieved with block course bookings having regular
appointments for 6 or 10 weeks. Once that is complete it is good to keep monthly
maintenance sessions. How lovely that we have found a gentle and pleasant
treatment to improve the skin – no chemical peeling, no botox, just a range of
treatments using a very clever machine. It is supposed to be £50 per treatment but
we charge just £40 and plan on keeping it that price for as long as we can! We run
special offers every so often and right now for Nov and Dec we have it half the rrp
price, so JUST £25 with our 2 therapists Jo and Nicky! And AMAZING OFFER and very
much worth a go.
Pictures of our extension coming VERY SOON! Best wishes… Maria xx

Gloucestershire Homeless and
Addiction
In Unique we talk about real issues and what impacts people locally. Homelessness in
Gloucestershire has increased in the last five years it is noticeable with the numbers of
people sleeping rough in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester especially.
I recently had a meeting with Chris Knight from CCP a
charity which helps homeless people between the ages of
16 to 25 years of age in Gloucestershire. Chris explained
to me that CCP was started 26 years ago and is funded
mostly by Gloucestershire Council and by donations from
corporate businesses. Chris also talked about how CCP
helps with educating and supporting Family Services
to help bring families closer together and to help stop
fragmentation of family values directly. We look forward to
talking more to CCP about their many initiatives for young
homeless people
BEHOLD THE MAN by Marksteen Adamson
The Big Cold Turkey Foundation supports youth at
risk of suffering – either from their ownaddictions,
or from the addictions of those close to them.
As part of the aim to raise awareness around
the effects of drug and alcohol abuse and other
addictions, The Big Cold Turkey worked with us to
capture and visualise a two year collaborative study
between ASHA’s partner, Marksteen Adamson and
Alan Dainton, a homeless beggar
in Cheltenham battling addiction.
There are strong links between substance misuse and homelessness, with drug users
being seven times more likely to be homeless than the general population. In fact research
suggests that two thirds of individuals report increasing problems with substance misuse
after becoming homeless, and more than half of hostels report the the majority of their
clients have a problem with drugs. Survey conducted by Homeless Link
The exhibition we created – ‘Behold the Man’ was launched at The Wilson – Cheltenham’s
museum and art gallery. As part of the exhibition visitors were invited to contemplate
three huge portraits of Alan, displayed in a triptych, each representing a different state of
mind. With a supporting video and book documenting Alan’s journey, visitors had
the opportunity to help Alan and those in similar situations by purchasing collateral
and donating plastic gold coins in one of three ways – sustentation, intervention and
prevention. There is no silver bullet to resolve drug addiction, Alan Dainton was asked
what he thought the solution was, his confident answer was -"If you don't want to get
addicted - don't start using drugs. All drugs, including cannabis, eventually lead to the
harder stuff" Two weeks after the exhibition, Alan decided to stay off heroin and is now
in sheltered accommodation in the Cheltenham YMCA. He is working on a recovery
programme.
“If my story helps just one kid stay off drugs, it would still have been worth it” Alan
Dainton
Reader Discussion Points:
First View: The reality of both homelessness and addiction is that every addict is
someone's son and is a human being like us all with all our flaws.
Second View: Homeless People have a choice to change their lives, why should I give
them money
What is your view ?
Inspiration
I have been asked many times about
inspiration and ‘who?’ inspired me to break
world records and do what I do on my bike.
Naming a sporting hero or an idol from music
or Hollywood usually satisfies such a question
but with me it has always been different. My
inspiration has come from two people: James
Allen and Napoleon Hill. ‘Who?’ I hear you say.
These two men are neither sportsmen nor
idols. James Allen and Napoleon Hill are
authors and their books changed my life. They opened up a whole new reality for me
and taught me things that no one has ever said to me before.
Here are some quotes from
the great Napoleon Hill:
‘What the mind can conceive
and believe, the body will
achieve’, ‘Patience, persistence
and perspiration make an
unbeatable combination for
success’, ‘Most great people
have attained their greatest
success just one step beyond
their greatest failure’.
What is stopping you achieving
your dream? There is only one simple answer to that. It’s YOU!
For further reading:
As a man Thinketh (1903) by James Allen.
Think and grow rich (1937) by Napoleon Hill
They taught me that I can achieve anything that I focus my mind on. These men
wrote about the power of the mind and they insisted that success is not about luck,
destiny or any form of good fortune but is simply to do with the way a person thinks.
Your thoughts are very powerful.
‘You are today where your thoughts
have brought you and you will be
tomorrow where your thoughts
take you’. “All that a man achieves
and all that he fails to achieve is the
direct result of his own thoughts.”
These are two of many quotes from
James Allen.
Your beliefs are also very powerful.
Beliefs can drive people to failure
or tremendous success. However,
beliefs are not real. Beliefs are
created by your thoughts, which
were conditioned by your past.
They can be changed at any moment. Whatever you choose to think and believe
will become your reality. If you think you cannot do something, that you are not
good enough and you will never be successful, then guess what? You will be right.
However, if you believe in yourself, if you believe that you can achieve success and
you have the relentless will to succeed then guess what? You will be right!
Tarragon Restaurant Testimonial
My husband and I visited Cheltenham for just one night. We dropped our bags off
and set off to explore the area. After reading many a review on “restaurants” we
stumbled across Tarragon and booked our table for later that evening. On our return
we were greeted by a very friendly, informative and attentive waiter. The food was
beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The wine was also a fab choice! A little
more expensive then the average place but the experience you leave with is top
notch! Would love to return one day :-)
We will definitely use Deca Design again and recommend you to our friends in
Slimbridge (as I have been doing already). The service and fitting from you was
excellent, you have been the best fitter we have ever had. We will be back !
Cotswold Barristers
Justice for all, not just the few
Few people go to court by choice: a courtroom is not a place which is normally
associated with having a great time. Litigation is notoriously expensive, uncertain
and attended by obscure rules and a language which is all but foreign. Put a foot
wrong and you may lose your case, be subject to financial penalties, or even find
yourself imprisoned for contempt of court.
More and more people becoming involved in the court process taking the law into
their own hands and representing themselves. One recent study shows that 2/3 of
cases involving family disputes (some of the most emotionally difficult cases) involve
at least one side with no legal representation at all.
Even the current Lord Chancellor (Justice Minister Michael Gove) has described a
two tier legal system, with a “gold standard” for the wealthy “and then everyone else,
who has to put up with a creaking, outdated system to see justice done in their own
lives.”
In response to the difficulty, delay and rising costs of resolving disputes through
court, various initiatives have been mooted by different interested bodies with a
view to making the process more manageable for both inexperienced and seasoned
litigants.
Most recently, the “unbundling” of court cases is being advanced by the Law Society
and Bar Council, as a way to address the real problems and unmet needs of people
seeking justice through the courts.
Every case in court, no matter what its value or subject-matter, goes through several
distinct stages. These include the initial decision to sue or defend a case, the
presentation of legal documents for court, dealing with the pre-trial timetables and
procedures, preparing evidence, and the conduct of the trial itself.
Barristers have traditionally been the “gold-standard” of litigation consultants.
They are the ones who win the case ultimately at court and who know courtroom
etiquette, procedure and cross-examination.
The team at Cotswold Barristers are experts at “unbundling” the courtroom
process; acting as guides through the litigation process whenever needed.
We offer a free 15 minute telephone conference (with a senior lawyer) and
our subsequent service levels range from consultancy for those representing
themselves to complete management of all elements of the matter,
In that way we hope that justice through the courts is something that is accessible
and available to all, and that everybody might have an equal chance in running
their case no matter what their budget.
by Charles King, Deputy Head of Cotswold Barristers
Many people are capable of dealing with correspondence during a case without
needing to run off to their solicitor every time they receive a letter. Often the costs
of retaining a solicitor for the whole length of a case can be prohibitively expensive.
On the other hand it is usually useful to have an experienced person to call up for
Cheltenham Town
Cheltenham Town's resurgence in National Football league and towards promotion
to Division 2 is looking good, following on from Cheltenham's 2-1 win at Bromley.
Substitute Asa Hall's stoppage-time goal earned Cheltenham Town victory at fellow
promotion hopefuls Bromley.
Saturday 24th October.
Some massive games coming up between Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham
Town who are currently in first and second place and it's hard to tell who will get the
upper hand in what is bound to be a titanic tussle, especially as it looks like one of
these Gloucestershire teams are going to hopefully win the league. Aldershot Away
on 28th November who are currently in twelfth place is a big game and a great
time for The Robins to open up a gap between themselves and those directly below
them.
Billy Waters had put Cheltenham ahead after Kyle Storer's long-range strike was
pushed into his path by home goalkeeper Chris Kettings. Anthony Cook looked to
have rescued a point for the hosts after he was brought down by George McLennan
in the box and slotted home the penalty. But in the first minute of injury time Hall
smashed the ball in from 10 yards. All of the goals came in the final 12 minutes after
both sides had struck the woodwork.
Come on you Robins
Cheltenham's goalkeeper Dillon Phillips also made a string of fine saves, denying
Moses Emmanuel three times. The National League's top scorer saw a one-on-one
effort kept out by Phillips and a shot pushed around the post in the first half. Early in
the second-half, Phillips palmed a stinging effort from the striker over the bar before
the late drama unfolded. Cheltenham remain in second but now only two points
behind Forest Green who were beaten at Eastleigh, while Bromley drop a place to
fifth.
Cheltenham Town boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "I'm bound
to say it was great character in adversity, it was a penalty - of course - and George
McLennan was beating himself up, but the lads showed that character to come back
straight away. At that point I thought we'd outrun Bromley, I thought they'd lost their
legs, lost their spirit and we felt that in the next couple of minutes we would get
another chance. Asa Hall's come up with a great strike, he does that often in training.
And they were two good substitutions by the manager!"
