NEFFICIENT/ INAPPROPRIATE USE OF AVAILABLE OCKET OF SPACE AT JUNCTION 2 CLOISTERED CARMEL 3 CHAOTIC TRAFFIC JUNCTION AS FOUR ROADS INTERSECT AT TWO DIFFERENT JUNCTIONS, THERE IS ABSOLUTE CHAOS THE RICKSHAWS COMPETE FOR SPACE WITH THE PEDESTRIANS FORCING THEM ONTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE RICKSHAW OPERATORS FACE A HUGE STRESS DUE TO THIS CONSTANT CLASH AND LACK OF ADEQUATE PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN TERMS OF PUBLIC TOILETS, DRINKING WATER ETC. POORLY PLANNED RICKSHAW STAND 4 INAPPROPRIATE POSITIONING OF BUS STOPS THE CURRENT POSITION OF BUS STOPS CREATES STRAIN IN AVAILABILITY OF SPACE FOR THE USERS OF THE BUS STOP AS WELL AS THE PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC. 5 6 UNDERUTILIZED MARGINS OF LAND IN R.O.W THE PATCH OF LAND IS FENCED DENYING UTILITY TO THE NEEDS OF THIS ROAD AND CAUSING HUGE BOTTLENECK. THE POSITION OF TREES VIZ A VIZ THE CARRIAGEWAY COULD BE INTEGRATED INTO THE SCHEME AND USED TO SEGREGATE RICKSHAW LANE FROM MAIN CARRIAGEWAY INTEGRATION OF EXISTINGTREES IN THE SCHEME 8 7 DANGEROUS CARRIAGEWAY EDGES LACK OF PATHWAYS FORCE PEDESTRIANS TO THE EDGE OF CARRIAGEWAY AT A GREAT RISK TO THEIR LIFE AND LIMBS. POOR PLACEMENT OF BUS STOPS THE LOCATION AND LAYOUT OF BUS STOPS MAKE SAFE CROSSING OF STREETS BY PEDESTRIANS DIFFICULT TO ORGANIZE. LAX ENFORCEMENT OF PARKING REGULA- TIONS FOR COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS ‘STOLEN PARKING’ OR CONVERSION OF SCHEDULED PARKING IN THE PREMISES TO RETAIL SPACE WHICH INTURN ADDS TO ENCROACHMENT OF PUBLIC SPACE FOR SUCH DEFICIT OF PARKING IN THE BUILDING. IN THIS CASE, BOTH SIDES OF THE ROAD ARE OCCUPIED BY THE VEHICLES COMING INTO THIS BUILDING. 10 11 24.00 UNINTELLIGENT PLANNING OF PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS SHALL BE PLANNED IN RELATION TO PATHWAYS, INTERSECTIONS AND AMENITIES SUCH AS BUS STOPS ETC. THERE SHOULD BE SECURE MEANS OF MOVEMENT AND SHOULD BE EASILY IDENTIFIABLE. 12 THE WIDE AVAILABLE MARGINS ARE ENCROACHED UPON BY TRUCKS, CARS, AUTOS ETC. UNAUTHORIZED AND UNCHECKED PARKING MANGALORE THE FOLLY OF SIMPLY LAYING RCC CARRIAGEWAYS BELOW EXISTING, COMPROMISED SERVICES NETWORK WILL INEVITABLY RESULT IN SUCH INTERVENTIONS. THIS CAN BE SEEN AT OVER A DOZEN LOCATIONS ON THIS STRETCH AND IS UNACCEPTABLE. HERE THE BANYAN TREE CONSUMES EXTENSIVE PEDESTRIAN SPACE AND HAS A VERY POOR LOOK TO IT UNLIKE THE TREES ADJACENT TO IT. SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE AVENUE TREES 14 THE AVENUE TREES REQUIRE PRUNING AT CRITICIAL STAGES TO GIVE IT PHYSICAL STABILITY. IN ITS ABSENCE THE OVERHANGING BRANCHES EVENTUALLY TOPPLE THE TREES OR BRANCHES COME CRASHING DOWN CAUSING DAMAGE TO LIFE AND PROPERTY. ABSENCE OF TREE SHAPING/PRUNING 15 16 17 18 MODIFICATION OF ROAD PROFILE THE PROJECTING INCLINED RAMP OF BEARY’S VALENCIA DEVELOPMENT IS ILLEGAL AND CUTS OFF PHYSICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD CROSS ROADS. THE 2ND AND 3RD CROSS ROADS WHICH JOIN THE MAIN ROAD IN AN INCLINE, ENTER THE MAIN ROAD WITH HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC. NEEDS SPEEDBREAKERS AND ZEBRA CROSSINGS. DANGER TO TRAFFIC FROM TREES 22 THERE BEING A LOT OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC IN THIS STRETCH, THERE IS A STRONG NEED FELT FOR WIDE PEDESTRIAN PATHWAYS. LACK OF PEDESTRIAN PATHWAY The project was a brain-child of the principal architect to change the urban experience of one of the busiest roads in Mangalore. Starting from a detailed analysis of the road and its uses, to the minutest details, I was involved single-handedly in draughting and detailing the entire project till I my internship ended there.
