Thomas Hoepker ist eine der letzten lebenden Legenden aus der grossen Zeit der Fotoreportage. Er war das erste deutsche Mitglied der Fotografenagentur Magnum und der erste akkreditierte Fotograf in der DDR, wo er für den «Stern» fotografierte. Im Auftrag von «Stern» bekam er 1964 die Möglichkeit, den Boxer Muhammad Ali während zehn Jahren in regel mäs sigen Abständen zu porträtieren. Entstanden ist eine legendäre Serie mit ikonografischen Bildern, die in die Fotogeschichte eingegangen sind und Hoepker zu Weltruhm verholfen haben. Die Bildhalle in Kilchberg / Zürich präsentiert ab dem 6. November «Ali and Beyond» mit bis anhin noch nie ausgestellten Vintage und Early Prints. Und natürlich mit bekannten, aber auch noch unbekannten Aufnahmen aus der Ali-Serie, die Hoepker anlässlich seiner Buchpublikation «Big Champ» aus seinem Archiv gehoben und erstmals der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht hat. • Text: Mirjam Cavegn, Bildhalle Photos: Thomas Hoepker Thomas Hoepker is one of the last living legends from the golden age of photojournalism. He was the first German member of the Magnum photographic agency and the first accredited photog raph er in the German Democratic Republic, where he worked for “Stern” magazine. It was a job from “Stern” in 1964 that gave him the opportunity to start shooting portraits of the boxer Muhammad Ali at regular intervals over a period of ten years. This resulted in a legendary series that has gone down in photo graphic history and made Hoepker internationally famous. From 6 November this year, the Bildhalle in Kilchberg / Zurich is showing “Ali and Beyond”, which presents a number of vintage and early prints that have never been exhibited before.
