At the sh<strong>are</strong>holders’ invitation, a group of young people,
« More than just standard – champagne
at the logistics location in Bocholt »
▶ Champagne – a special challenge
WM-Logistik always offers more than standard service.
For WM-Logistik flexible, individual concepts such as the
concept for the champagne manufacturer VRANKEN POM-
MERY <strong>are</strong> simply part of the business and always represent
<strong>we</strong>lcome challenges for the company. “Maybe this was also
a reason for VRANKEN POMMERY. We <strong>are</strong> a medium-sized
company and place high importance on a direct contact
to our customers. In this way, <strong>we</strong> have soon developed a
feel for what’s important and where <strong>we</strong> can support our
customers.”
A conversion for best
storage conditions
Dieter Kloster
Forklift truck driver
The company has been in contact with the second
largest manufacturer of champagne VRAN-
KEN POMMERY since 2014. “When <strong>we</strong> started to
search for a new logistics partner, it was already
clear that the location in Bocholt could be a good choice
for us,” branch manager Hans Engels remembers.
The storage and handling of champagne differs significantly
from other goods stored at this location. On-site
inspections helped to see whether the conditions <strong>are</strong> suitable
and to check which adjustments have to be made.
“The customer placed high importance on the structure of
the w<strong>are</strong>house, the storage <strong>are</strong>as available and, of course,
on the flexibility of the qualified staff which is very important
to handle the strongly seasonal champagne business.
“Especially in this case, the combination of high racks and
a picking zone is a clear advantage,” the deputy head of
the logistics department Johann Schmold explains. He
has accompanied the entire implementation on the part
of WM-Logistik and has always been in direct contact with
the customer. A five-person project team of logistics and
IT specialists has managed the implementation of the new
customer business together with VRANKEN POMMERY and
provided support. In this way, the implementation could
be done in a minimum of time, starting in May 2014 and
completed with the first delivery in July 2014.
The flexibility already mentioned also finds expression in
the conversion of the location to achieve the desired conditions.
“For VRANKEN POMMERY, <strong>we</strong> separated the picking
zone from the rest of the w<strong>are</strong>house using a drywall and
the storage <strong>are</strong>as in the high racks <strong>we</strong>re also separated from
the others. The reason for this is that champagne requires
special climatic conditions during storage and transport
to guarantee a consistently high quality. Hans Engels: “An
especially integrated control system permanently monitors
temperature and humidity. If the values measured <strong>are</strong> outside
the tolerance range specified by the customer, a centrally
controlled warning system will immediately report
the deviation. An employee then receives a text message
no matter at which time so that countermeasures can be
taken immediately.”
Apart from the climatic conditions, there <strong>we</strong>re additional
measures that had to be taken to handle this luxury
product. Above all, the w<strong>are</strong>house employees had to be
instructed in the special handling of fragile goods. Goods
that <strong>are</strong> ready for dispatch <strong>are</strong> also subject to special quality
requirements. “It’s a high-quality product and the customers
already expect highest quality upon receipt,” Johann
Schmold says. “So each carton has to be checked before
dispatch and c<strong>are</strong>fully packed to protect it from external
“Cruise ships, film festivals and the Fashion
Week <strong>are</strong> supplied with Pommery
„
champagne from Bocholt
influences during transport. Here, the functionality of the
packaging is as decisive as its looks.”
As the trade in champagne is subject to the tax on sparkling
wines and extensive quality checks, there <strong>are</strong> additional
requirements WM-Logistik has to meet here, too. “If
a bottle gets broken, <strong>we</strong> have to keep the bottleneck to
report the damage and document it properly. Only when
customs approve the disposal of a bottleneck, <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong> allo<strong>we</strong>d
to do so,” branch manager Hans Engels explains. Besides,
WM-Logistik is involved in the proof of highest product
quality. With a complete batch tracking, the logistics
specialists therefore ensure that every champagne bottle
can be tracked from bottling through to delivery to the end
consumer.
In order to keep the processes as <strong>we</strong>ll as the information
flow bet<strong>we</strong>en the parties involved as lean as possible in daily
handling, WM-Logistik goes one step further. Integrated
interfaces make the daily business easier and the provision
of information for the following process steps significantly
faster and more secure. An example: “Once an order from
VRANKEN POMMERY is received, it is transmitted to the logistics
department. At the same time, the transportation
service provider is informed so that no delays can occur in
the best case,” Johann Schmold explains.
Last but not least the cooperation with VRANKEN POM-
MERY also had a completely different effect for the WM
GROUP. “With the storage and handling of high-quality
champagne, good wine and finest cognacs our logistics
centre in Bocholt got a touch of luxury. It is always a pleasure
to walk through the newly designed, clearly structured
and extremely clean Pommery picking <strong>are</strong>a with customers.
Thanks to large product and advertising posters, it’s even
quite stylish! And this also has a positive influence on our
employees who <strong>are</strong> full of enthusiasm and always do their
best during the demanding picking and packing process
to ensure that our client’s customers get the champagne of
the right vintage in the selected gift packaging and at the
right time!” Managing director Günter Artinger adds.
Joachim Döring left the location in Treuen and is now working
they do – which is very important to us. Over the many years
of cooperation, <strong>we</strong> could build up and use appropriate
logistics systems in combination with the right IT solutions
together with the same team of contact persons. For me,
this is the key to success.
The logistics landscape is <strong>we</strong>ll set up, so the competitive
pressure should not be underestimated. Apart from the reasons
already mentioned, <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong> also very satisfied with the
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: What <strong>are</strong> the advantages?
Strengthened
management team
Klaus Weßing: The logistics provided by WM GROUP is
of high quality and characterized by great flexibility. Depending
on sales and volume requirements, they always
react appropriately – as there <strong>are</strong> fluctuations of 300 per
Management of
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: Has the cooperation changed or further developed
over time?
Klaus Weßing: As already mentioned, I would describe
the business relationship bet<strong>we</strong>en WM GROUP and Gigaset
as a close cooperation – which has developed over time, of
course. Thanks to the continuous further development of
logistics processes, the efficiency for Gigaset has increased.
An open communication and a regular exchange have always
been the basis of this cooperation and this is also the
reason why Gigaset rene<strong>we</strong>d the contract several times –
despite the market situation in the logistics service sector.
We <strong>are</strong> very satisfied.
and also part of the already mentioned flexibility that characterizes
our cooperation.
smaller applications – so-called apps. Registered customers
can model the intended process at first with the Logistics
Process Designer (LPD).
Applications for
the use of LPD
Together with the softw<strong>are</strong> and programming specialist
Bitergo from Dortmund, Logata is currently
working on applications that allow for the full use
of the third phase of the logistics mall.
A market full of opportunities –
the logistics mall
The logistics mall – the virtual marketplace for Logistics 4.0
– was developed by the Fraunhofer institutes IML and ISST
and put into operation by Logata GmbH in three phases. “In
the first phase, complete softw<strong>are</strong> packages <strong>we</strong>re offered
for rent,” Andreas Trautmann, managing director of LinogistiX,
explains. “The advantage is that it is no longer necessary
to buy softw<strong>are</strong> licenses at a relatively high price. As the
respective softw<strong>are</strong> is rented, there <strong>are</strong> lo<strong>we</strong>r monthly costs
and the customers do no longer have to worry about the
maintenance or backup of important data,” Trautmann adds.
All programmes and servers required <strong>are</strong> hosted in the data
centre of Lanfer Systemhaus and operated by Logata.
In the second phase, the communication bet<strong>we</strong>en the individual
IT solutions was added. Trautmann: “In phase 2, standardized
interfaces allo<strong>we</strong>d individual applications to communicate
with each other.” If, for instance, a batch is removed
from stock, the <strong>are</strong>a will immediately be shown as free. Single
solutions thus became integrated solutions.
Focus on the process – Phase 3
“With phase 3, <strong>we</strong> offer a completely new product,” Trautmann
says. To offer the customers maximum benefits, the
developers of the logistics mall gave priority to the process
that has to be handled and made it the starting point for
In cooperation with Bitergo GmbH basic apps for
w<strong>are</strong>house management <strong>we</strong>re developed. They include the
most important functions like the receiving, storage, picking
and shipping of goods. These applications form the basis
for the already mentioned third phase of the mall. With the
Process Designer the apps can be combined according to a
modular principle and thus form the basis for further developments
as <strong>we</strong>ll as for the integration of other service providers
in phase 3.
“We <strong>are</strong> currently in the middle of the implementation
phase. The customers will be able to use the apps in the second
quarter of 2015,” Andreas Trautmann explains.
The universal platform for seamless
collaboration in logistics»
▶ From now on in the mall: Catkin
All participants can quite easily access and use the portal
from any PC, tablet or smartphone with internet access.
They decide who can see and change what information
and when. This is extremely reliable and legally certain.
Reducing costs
In addition to its main functionality – the structuring and
simplification of communication bet<strong>we</strong>en planning and realisation
– catkin® supports order accompanying processes
like price coordination, mobile recording of working time,
order documentation or GPS tracking and time matching.
Costs for quality assurance, disposition and accounting <strong>are</strong>
thus significantly reduced, while the flexibility and speed
of order processing <strong>are</strong> increased. Planners and dispatchers
work in modern, ergonomic cockpits that clearly show
order functionalities, planning charts and controller dashboards.
The catkin® platform – now available in the logistics mall!
The Company
atkin GmbH provides a cross-company and cross-system
communication platform for services. Service provider orders
<strong>are</strong> exchanged simply and securely bet<strong>we</strong>en the client
and the contractor via an integrative system. The implementing
employees can provide feedback very easily via
smartphone.
catkin GmbH’s aim is to competently support businesses
involved in the logistical processes of order data communications.
This includes the data exchange with customers
and service providers but also within the company. We offer
target-oriented advice for our catkin communication platform.
If necessary, <strong>we</strong> also integrate your in-house system
into catkin.
With the catkin® platform, the logistics mall
can offer a new product. The virtual marketplace
now also contains the universal
order portal for logistics. With catkin® you
can securely and simply communicate order data and the
progress of all services in real time, which allows for a seamless
collaboration bet<strong>we</strong>en all parties involved.
« Historically grown – the Party Rent
Group relies on IT Support from Lanfer
Systemhaus »
When asked about the intensity of the cooperation with
Lanfer Systemhaus, Bernhard We<strong>we</strong>ring of the Party Rent
Group spontaneously ans<strong>we</strong>rs: “We <strong>are</strong> almost married. It’s
a cooperation that has “historically grown” over time.”

26 27
▶ The Party Rent Group‘s location in Bocholt
instance, a big event in the south of Germany that cannot be
equipped from the local branch alone, as there <strong>are</strong> e.g. 150
chairs missing, the employee will be able to get an overview
over a Party Rent w<strong>are</strong>house near the event location – that
could also be in Austria – and thus to equip the event as
planned,” Bernhard We<strong>we</strong>ring explains. “The photo pool that
is of high importance for our public relations and sales work
could also be expanded at any time and from any location,
as everyone would have access to it.”
An advantage: Audit-proof and
clearly structured email archiving
Besides, the email management played an important
role. The inbox as a filling system and overloaded servers
due to enormous data volumes – all this should become
a thing of the past. “We could develop and implement a
solution with and for Party Rent that perfectly meets the
requirements and is yet open for further development,”
The Company
The Party Rent Group is a network of owner-managed family
businesses. Apart from our headquarters in Bocholt, Westphalia,
there <strong>are</strong> further German locations in Berlin, Dortmund,
Düsseldorf/Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover,
Bremen, Kassel, Munich and Stuttgart. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, <strong>we</strong> have
also successively increased our presence outside of Germany.
We have additional locations in France, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Scandinavia and Austria.
The Party Rent Group is an event organiser operating
throughout Europe with 19 locations that <strong>are</strong>
partially operated through franchise companies
and more than 450 employees in Germany, the
Netherlands, Austria, France, Luxembourg and Scandinavia.
For more than 20 years, the experts have realised complete
equipment concepts for every type and size of event. The
service offer comprises everything needed for an event:
Ranging from table tops like cutlery, glasses and crockery
via rental furniture, lounge furniture, bar and buffet systems
through to kitchen equipment, presentation technology,
decoration and tents. “Our aim is to create a perfect atmosphere,”
Bernhard We<strong>we</strong>ring explains.
The idea: A central IT system for
the entire group
“Here at the headquarters in Bocholt, <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong> almost
neighbours,” says We<strong>we</strong>ring. Both companies <strong>are</strong> located in
the industrial estate of Bocholt and have had a trusting and
close business relationship for more than a decade. During
the planning of new IT structures, the idea of connecting
the independent EDP applications of the single locations
arose. Discussions <strong>we</strong>re held and possibilities and advantages
of such centralization <strong>we</strong>re summarised. “A central access
e.g. to a common enterprise resource planning system
from every location has a lot of advantages. If there is, for
▶ The migration made a central checking
of availabilities possible
claim every day! Be part of it and shape the success of our
interviews and get comprehensive and interesting insights
into the world of Party Rent. We would like to show you the
possibilities within the Party Rent Group.
▶The experts create...
▶ ... a special atmosphere...
▶ ... in every room
Peter Tiemann from Lanfer Systemhaus explains. “With a
central archiving of important emails and associated data,
the large numbers of emails can easily be managed while
also meeting the legal requirements on the provision on
business-critical emails. Finding and recovering emails
gets really simple and all employees know where they can
find the archived data.” “Moreover, <strong>we</strong> could integrate a solution
that is easy to control centrally and that ensures a
uniform design of the emails in the company’s CI. From
resource planning via communication through to crosssite
data exchange: The new solution saves time and reduces
sources of error. “The Party Rent Group is home in the
just-in-time business. That’s why the employees must have
access to information relevant for their tasks at any time
and in any place,” Peter Tiemann says. Another important
aspect is security. Lanfer Systemhaus operates data centres
that <strong>are</strong> listed among the most secure and most efficient
data centres of the region. A biometric security system
represents the final obstacle of a multi-stage access protection
system. A direct link to security and fire brigade
<strong>are</strong> also integrated, just like extensive video surveillance
of the entire site and sensitive <strong>are</strong>as. Moreover, there’s a
24/7 support offered for the customer systems operated
in the Lanfer data centre. All important infrastructures like
high-end internet connections, air-conditioning systems,
energy services incl. emergency po<strong>we</strong>r supply come at
With Peter Tiemann, Peter Zimmermann and Mark Köller,
Lanfer Systemhaus has reorganised its management. While
Mr. Zimmermann and Mr. Tiemann <strong>are</strong> responsible for sales,
the IT manager Mr. Köller also takes c<strong>are</strong> of the interal data
converted to the new system by setting the access options
and by optimising the data movement. “We <strong>we</strong>re also and
especially supported during the critical movement phase.
Every Sunday afternoon, the employees <strong>we</strong>re trained directly
at the different locations. In the following days, a specialist
from Lanfer was still there to clarify questions and possible
problems that only occur during the workflow,” Bernhard
Lanfer Systemhaus is also very satisfied. Peter Tiemann:
Bocholt. So everything had to work smoothly right after the
migration <strong>we</strong>ekends.”
Mr. Kampmann
Hubert Tüshaus
Hubert Tüshaus attained the UL certification and so Lanfer
systems. The Underwriters Laboratories – in short, UL – has five
testing laboratories in the USA as <strong>we</strong>ll as subsidiaries all over
the world. The main objective is to carry out tests aimed at general
safety. The UL508A is the standard of safety for industrial
control equipment that has to be taken into account when
manufacturing switching stations. Lanfer Automation produces
UL-compliant switch cabinets. This UL certification is very
important for the export in different countries, especially for
the American market, and is also partially prescribed by customers.
In North America in particular, the UL certification is a
sign for the compliance of all safety requirements. So it’s a true
competitive advantage, when your machines and systems
<strong>are</strong> equipped with UL-compliant switch cabinets and control
units right from the start.
Mr. Barbett & Mr. Höing
Mr. Barbett and Mr. Höing successfully completed a course
about Siemens building control systems. Thanks to their participation
in the course and the use of the building automation
system Desigo, the company is now able to also handle independent
projects. Buildings do not only provide working and
living environments, they <strong>are</strong> also an investment. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, to
maintain their value an economical operation is indispensible.
Currently, buildings <strong>are</strong> responsible for around 40 per cent of
the worldwide energy consumption – a cost factor that can be
reduced with modern building automation systems. Desigo
offers a high savings potential as it efficiently combines, regulates,
controls and monitors different functions and technical
building systems. This provides a healthy indoor climate as
<strong>we</strong>ll as a higher user satisfaction while reducing the constantly
rising energy-related operating costs through efficient energy
saving features.
Mr. Barbett is now also trained in Desigo Insight, a central
and comfortable building management station. The users simply
and intuitively control their building technology systems
without mistakes via easy-to-understand graphic displays. Access,
display and the quantity of information can be tailored
precisely to the needs and qualifications of individual users.
With Desigo Insight, you also benefit from the continuous
monitoring of process and consumption values: Eco Monito-
Mr. Kampmann is trained in WinCC. The WinCC visualization
system by Siemens is technologically neutral as <strong>we</strong>ll as sectorneutral.
With regard to its softw<strong>are</strong> architecture, it is modular,
flexibly expandable and fully scalable. WinCC can be used for
demanding single-user systems in mechanical engineering,
as <strong>we</strong>ll as for distributed systems with redundant servers and
clients – also internet-based – in systems engineering. It combines
production and process automation – numerous references
across all applications and industries prove that. With
regards to process visualization, WinCC can be described as
the industrial standard – as an independent SCADA system
(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) or as a HMI component
of control systems, such as the SIMATIC PCS 7.
With WinCC options or add-ons, the basic system can easily
be adapted to meet industry-specific requirements like you
can find them in the pharmaceutical industry or in the water
sector, for instance.
“Solitaire”. The ship belongs to the Swiss company Allseas,
one of the global leaders in offshore pipeline installation
and subsea construction. The “Solitaire” can lay up to nine
kilometres of pipes on the seabed per day. To form a continuous
pipeline, individual pipes with a length of t<strong>we</strong>lve
metres each <strong>are</strong> <strong>we</strong>lded together on the inside and outside
in a double joint factory. Afterwards, these double pipes <strong>are</strong>
transported to the production line, where they <strong>are</strong> <strong>we</strong>lded
together with the main pipeline and then continuously installed
on the seabed. “This process must not take more than
20 minutes, otherwise, the costs would be too high,” explains
Büscher who has got a doctorate in mechanical engineering.
So the focus in on speed yet also on quality – the seams have
to be completely sealed and durable which is why there <strong>are</strong>
continuous ultrasonic tests. According to Büscher, the <strong>we</strong>lding
devices from the Borken company HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems
GmbH & Co KG primarily stand out for their t<strong>we</strong>lve metres
long boom that enters the pipes with a diametre of 20
centimetres fully automatically with 40 metres per minute.
This was an engineering challenge for us that <strong>we</strong> could only
Fiveteen employees of HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems
GmbH & Co. KG spend Christmas on the high sea –
among them, colleagues from Bocholt and Rhede.
In the middle of the Atlantic, they install new <strong>we</strong>lding
devices on the “Solitaire”.
Thousends of kilometres away from home, somewhere
on the Atlantic bet<strong>we</strong>en Israel and Brasil: This year, 15 men
from Borken and its surroundings will spend Christmas and
New Year‘s Eve on the high sea. Marc Stemmermann is one
of them: “I have already been away on jobs in the USA, in
Turkey and in India, but I have never been working on a ship.
I‘m interested in this new experience – and I wonder what it
is like to work on the sea with waves.”
All of the 15 men <strong>are</strong> employees of HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems
GmbH & Co. KG based in Weseke as <strong>we</strong>ll as of its supplier
Lanfer Automation GmbH & Co. KG. Their mission: They
install new <strong>we</strong>lding devices aboard the “Solitaire”, a 300 m
long ship laying deepwater pipelines. “For us as a mediumsized
company with 36 employees, this is a big deal,” the managing
director of HAANE Dr. Konstantin Büscher says with
enthusiasm. According to him, there has never been an order
with a volume of around four million euros before in the history
of the company. “We could only accept it, because the
entire team of employees and, of course, their families that
now have to celebrate Christmas without their husbands
<strong>we</strong>nt along with it,” Büscher says, grateful and appreciative.
Since mid-December, the 15 men have been aboard the
master thanks to our many years of experience in pipework
and the car industry,” the head of the company explains.
Until the end of January, the HAANE crew will have installed
those <strong>we</strong>lding devices in eight lines in total. “We install
the devices mechanically and electronically, integrate the
softw<strong>are</strong> into the onboard system, carry out test runs and
train the crew of our client so that they also have the necessary
know-how,” Marc Stemmermann describes the tasks
for the following <strong>we</strong>eks. Despite the long distance, the long
period and the Christmas holidays, Marc Stemmermann
doesn‘t worry too much about the pain of parting. “I‘ll work a
lot so there won‘t be much time to become homesick.” Ho<strong>we</strong>ver,
he is happy that he can keep in touch with his family
via internet. Besides, the company management of HAANE
has bought a satellite phone so that their employees can
talk to their families. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, it is primarily the life on a ship
that is a great change for the team. “You first have to become
accustomed to climbing stairs all the time,” Stemmermann
“The preparation for the job on the high
seas alone was spectacular
„
says with a grin. Because you have to climb stairs no matter
where you want to go on the cramped ship full of nooks and
crannies where it is really stuffy below deck in spite of the air
conditioning systems.
Although the “Solitaire” is not the “Aida”, you can spend your
free time in comfort: There <strong>are</strong> rooms for the crew with TVs
and computers, a sports room and a sauna and, what‘s more,
six warm meals <strong>are</strong> cooked for the 420 man crew round the
▶ A continuous pipe was built on the ship
▶ Especially important:
Promptness and precision
clock. It is not only the life on a ship that is a special experience
for the 15 men – “many of us have never worked abroad
or on a ship nor have they been away from home for so
long,” Stemmermann says. The preparation for the job alone
has been spectacular. All employees had to get the “Medical
Certificate for Service at Sea” to prove their fitness for sea
service, theoretically and medically, and do a “Basic Offshore
Training”. During this special safety training for sea service,
you learn what to do when there is smoke and fire on an oil
platform and how to give first aid. All tests and certifications
<strong>we</strong>re in English – another challenge for the men who <strong>are</strong> actually
engineers, draughtsmen, electrical engineers, machine
fitters or machine engineers as <strong>we</strong>ll as electricians.
The Company
HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems GmbH & Co. KG with its headquarters
in Borken develops, manufactures and sells automatic
<strong>we</strong>lding machines and devices that <strong>are</strong> used for mechanical
engineering and automation technology. With these devices
from Borken, leading industrial enterprises all over the
world manufacture oil and gas pipes, turbines or track vehicles
and much more – according to the company. Most of
the HAANE products <strong>are</strong> customised, “because concerning
workpieces with a <strong>we</strong>ight of 1000 tonnes or more, there‘s
nothing off-the-shelf,” they say. The HAANE know-how is especially
large when it comes to the combination of machine
construction, control and sensor technology – only in this
way, the automatic <strong>we</strong>lding machines can work fully automatically
and intelligently when in use later on. For more
than 60 years, HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems GmbH & Co. KG has
been a specialist in technical <strong>we</strong>lding tasks. In 2009, the new
headquarters including assembly hall <strong>we</strong>re built in Borken.
36 employees <strong>are</strong> currently working here.
regularly make coordinations, changes and approvals with
the vessel owner Allseas as <strong>we</strong>ll as with the ultimate buyer,
a Brasilian oil company,” Büscher explains. As if that was not
enough, the job overseas also required changes within the
company: HAANE <strong>we</strong>lding systems GmbH & Co. KG had to
get a certification: according to DIN ISO 9001 (processes and
procedures) as <strong>we</strong>ll as according to SCC (safety, health and
environmental management at work). „We passed both audits
at the beginning of December – an essential condition
to start the work aboard the ship,“ Büscher says. Until the end
of January, Marc Stemmermann and his 14 colleagues will be
aboard the “Solitaire“ before they‘ll return home to their families.
Even though Christmas is not celebrated with roast goo-
se and red cabbage later, „my wife and I will take some days
off“, Schermbecker says happily. „And there‘s also a highlight
waiting for us: In the summer, <strong>we</strong> will go to Spain on our
motorbikes.“ Although none of them accepted the offer of
the management to fly the families in to Rio de Janiero to
<strong>we</strong>lcome the crew, most of the men already know what to
do after the long time away from home: Go on holiday. The
employees definitely have to regain their strength, as from
Mai next year, part two of the order will start: The installation
of <strong>we</strong>lding systems aboard the world‘s largest pipelaying
ship „Pieter Schelte“ that is currently built in Korea by Allseas.
▶ Impressive: The „Solitaire“
ter crash into the sea. In full rig – that is to say with protective
gear and helmet but without oxygen bottle – the men who
<strong>we</strong>re sitting in a cabin reproduced true to the original <strong>we</strong>aring
seat belts <strong>we</strong>re dropped into a pool. After the cabin had
abruptly turned 180 degrees and had filled with water, the
test persons had to wait for the pilot‘s sign saying that the
rotor blades have come to a full stop. Only then they <strong>we</strong>re
allo<strong>we</strong>d to open the windows and swim to the surface. “I
used to dive in the past which is why I could orientate myself
<strong>we</strong>ll under water,” Stemmermann reports, “ho<strong>we</strong>ver, some
colleagues of mine struggled with fears and anxieties, but <strong>we</strong>
supported each other.” It was less than a year until the training
began and the installation works started – an extremely
short period for orders of this volume, they say. “As usual
for those large projects, it is time and flexibility that matters,”
Büscher, who took over the business from Franz Haane in
2007, knows. For Allseas that meant not to produce the devices
within the usual period of six months, but within only
six <strong>we</strong>eks. “It‘s not only the suppliers that have to go along
with it – <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong> buying the electrical systems and parts of
the programming extra – but primarily the own team,” Büscher
says. For the past summer months this meant: a ban on
taking time off, doing overtime, <strong>we</strong>ekend work. “Only when
my entire team – from the secretary via the fitters through to
the engineers – had given me their backing, I accepted the
order,” the 41-year old man says. As soon as the “Solitaire” was
in dock in the Rotterdam harbour, the preliminary planning
and measurement started. While they <strong>we</strong>re working on the
system‘s prototype in a local <strong>we</strong>lding school, identical copies
<strong>we</strong>re built for the other seven lines in the factory building
of the company in Weseke. During this time, the vehicles
of the company ran hot and the lines buzzed: “We had to
« Key to Greater Efficiency »
Integrative building concepts: Lanfer Automation unifies
the varying systems of individual building technology
sectors via the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750.
Smart buildings significantly reduce energy consumption.
Thus, it is truly smart for all the technical components to be
intelligently networked. Lanfer Automation GmbH, based in
Borken, Germany accomplishes this using WAGO controllers.
The result is not just energy savings, it also opens up energy
synergies.
▶ Flexible core: modular WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 components ensure that
the different technical systems in a building can understand each other
renovated its headquarters in late 2013, in which the building
was equipped with innovative automation technology
— from cellar to ceiling — and targeted energy efficiency. It
would be easy to view the entire office building as one big
showroom. “Technologically, a lot more can be done today
than is conventionally implemented,” explains Lanfer. And
the company from Borken wants to demonstrate just what
can be done. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, the building does not just reflect the
visionary philosophy that led to the company‘s founding in
1979; the project also reveals a groundbreaking change in
the design and networking of technical systems.
components cannot be intelligent islands. It is really smart
and efficient when they <strong>are</strong> networked.” This type of integrative
application has been a focus of sector experts for a long
time, as the potential for additional energy savings is high.
While energy efficiency is an important factor in real estate,
according to Lanfer, these types of projects <strong>are</strong> uncommon.
“Only a few design companies <strong>are</strong> currently pursuing integrative
concepts in which the individual building‘s individual
systems <strong>are</strong> synchronized with each other.”
“It is really smart and efficient when
they <strong>are</strong> networked
„
Whether it’s heaters, air-conditioning technology or illumination,
Lanfer says each system presents good opportunities
for adding intelligence to buildings and for using energy as
efficiently as possible. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, since these individual building
sectors in their traditional forms do not have overlapping
technology and combined installations, the end result
is not always the optimal. “A typical example is when the heating
and cooling systems work against each other. It is too
warm, so the air conditioning system automatically switches
on; ho<strong>we</strong>ver, the heating does not switch off at the same
time,” explains Lanfer. An integrated concept would prevent
this. In this case, the advantages extend <strong>we</strong>ll beyond additional
energy savings. Synergistic effects also came from the
installations themselves; for example, bus technology alleviated
the need for laying multiple cables. Lanfer Automation
achieves additional savings by using the flexible WINSTA®
Connector System from WAGO, which simplifies connections
bet<strong>we</strong>en systems and devices.
Getting a Grip on Interface Problems
With the renovation of their own headquarters, Lanfer Automation
proved how dormant possibilities can be successfully
exploited by integrated concepts. The point of origin is
the basement, where the central heating unit, supplied by
district heat, is located. The central heat was connected to
▶ Efficiency central: all building systems and devices can be
measured and controlled using proprietary softw<strong>are</strong>
Alfred Lanfer scans a QR code on a conference room’s door
with his smartphone in order to prep<strong>are</strong> for the next meeting.
With just one finger swipe on a tiny screen, the blinds
lo<strong>we</strong>r, the lights dim and a projector and screen descend
from the ceiling. “This is the presentation function that <strong>we</strong>
<strong>we</strong>re able to realize with just one switch by using EnOcean
technology,” explains the CEO of Lanfer Automation GmbH.
This small, concerted effort of technical finesse is just one
piece of what the project developer, located in the Westphalian
town of Borken, can do. The company completely
Linking Intelligent Islands
Another finger gesture on the smartphone allows Lanfer
to reset the conference room to its original configuration.
“The demands placed on buildings and individual rooms naturally
vary quite a bit,” he says. “The basic idea is to accommodate
multiple demands under one roof. It can‘t be too
warm or too cold, the light has to be right, and at the same
time, everything has to be as energy efficient as possible. The
key to this is automation. Moreover, the individual intelligent

42 43
the building-wide ETHERNET bus system, which intelligently
distributes the warmth. In addition, sensors constantly measure
all of the office temperatures on the building’s three
floors, where the heating system and a synchronized airconditioning
system adjust the actual values to meet the target.
The current outside temperature, as reported by a linked
<strong>we</strong>ather station, is also included.
And there’s more: movement sensors detect whether anyone
is in a particular room. If no one is there, the system
shuts off the lighting and reduces the heating level. In addition,
light sensors measure brightness levels in the offices and
dim the LED-equipped rooms to optimal levels. Of course
this occurs in coordination with external shades that <strong>are</strong>
lo<strong>we</strong>red automatically depending on the angle of the sun;
this in turn offloads the air-conditioning system. Additionally,
there is a roof-mounted photovoltaic system that employs
the po<strong>we</strong>r of the sun in yet another way. The building‘s intelligence
extends to the doorknobs; red and green LEDs on
the outside knob indicate whether or not a conference room
is occupied.
▶ Simplifies the connections bet<strong>we</strong>en
systems and devices: the flexible WINSTA®
Connector System from WAGO
▶ The heating system in the basement of the
Lanfer Automation headquarters in Borken,
Germany is coupled to the air-conditioning
system to provide intelligent heat
Although this may seem rather whimsical, the complete
design and the technical implementation is anything but.
Lanfer outlines the actual goal, “In coordination with our integrative
approach, <strong>we</strong> wanted to unite all components at
central points in order to minimize the interfaces.” In order to
harmonize the different systems from the individual building
technology sectors, each floor received its own control unit.
And at the core of each case is a modular WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM
750. “In the end, the customer should benefit from the intelligence
of the individual technologies and not have to grapple
with interface problems. This can be done,” states Lanfer,
“using the open and extremely flexible WAGO controllers”.
With the WAGO controller, there is basically only one ETHER-
NET interface. It functions centrally for all data and ensures
that the building‘s technical components work together. For
this purpose, the I/O modules collect information belonging
to the different bus systems from the individual building sectors,
such as from DALI for illumination control and from KNX
for the climate system. SMI is similarly integrated for outside
shading, as <strong>are</strong> EnOcean wireless touch switches and many
others.
Web-Based Energy Monitoring
Contact
Lanfer Automation continues to evolve the system. Most
recently, sensors <strong>we</strong>re installed in a few rooms to measure
the CO2 content in the air. “The measure of what makes
sense regarding intelligence is naturally very individual,” says
Lanfer. Thus, the services of Lanfer Automation begin with
advising. With engineering firms as partners, the company
from Borken determines in advance which technologies and
systems <strong>are</strong> best suited for the project and the customer, and
how the cost-benefit ratios look in detail. The services offered
extend from installation and construction of control cabinets,
up to programming and softw<strong>are</strong> development. Lanfer
Automation also undertakes maintenance and emergency
services around the clock, 365 days a year. Modern security
technology is also offered. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, the attraction remains
the intelligent unification of all systems used at a central
point. Since the WAGO controller also communicates using
Internet protocols, maintenance tasks can be managed remotely
using the <strong>we</strong>b. Likewise, mobile users with additional
softw<strong>are</strong> can change settings like room temperature, lighting
schemes and other aspects using tablets or smartphones.
Lanfer Automation has also tapped into <strong>we</strong>b-based data
retrieval via the WAGO controllers to provide even greater levels
of service and support. The automation experts have set
up an energy monitoring system that is based on their proprietary
softw<strong>are</strong>. The tool displays electrical and heat consumption
within specified time frames using clear graphics
through an Internet browser. Based on these load profiles,
companies can meet their legal requirements, determine
their energy consumption, implement further optimizations
and track how <strong>we</strong>ll these measures <strong>are</strong> working. In the meantime,
Lanfer is thinking a step ahead and he sh<strong>are</strong>s that,
“It is conceivable for us to detect and improve not only the
current consumption values, but project future energy consumption
based on the analysis.” The anticipated result: utilities
would make electricity and heat available at reduced
rates. And that would be really smart.
The challenge
Today‘s production lines <strong>are</strong> characterised by high quantities
and the highest possible efficiency. Productivity is the
focus of large-series production. These Die Palette rigid, <strong>we</strong>iß, inflexible <strong>we</strong>m sie and
LinogistiX makes a
difference to your
logistics
Open IT solutions for material flow and intralogistic, RFID
integration and retrofitting of material flow controls <strong>are</strong> the
core competences of LinogistiX GmbH from Dortmund.
LinogistiX offers innovative softw<strong>are</strong> solutions and products
for the “Internet of Things” – the RFID-based control of the
automated material flow, autonomous w<strong>are</strong>house vehicles
and shuttle systems. On this basis, <strong>we</strong> bridge the gap bet<strong>we</strong>en
current research findings and their practical implementation,
just like <strong>we</strong> did for the Multishuttle Move project
together with Frauenhofer Institute.
The use of mobile end devices and the integration of RFID
or IT solutions into the cloud <strong>are</strong> current topics, of which the
practical implementation has especially great potentials for
medium-sized companies. Our employees have an interdisciplinary
knowledge comprising expertise in engineering/
information technology and logistics.
For technology providers and manufacturers of storage
technologies, the open-source platform myWMS is an interesting
way to offer own solutions on a standardized platform.
The core of this new approach is a production system
with distributed control where materials and production
parts make their own way from one machine to the next.
This calls for continuous data exchange bet<strong>we</strong>en the smart
objects combined with flexible control. The key to this is
intelligent, networked sensors that scan the environment
and communicate with each other and with their surroundings.
In this way, the continuous exchange of data can be
used, for instance, to directly organise supplier relations
(When is the next delivery due?). So-called softw<strong>are</strong> agents
that work according to the principle of the “Internet of
Things” check the exchange of information and decisions
regarding logistics workflows. This form of distributed artificial
intelligence ensures that production is self-organised
to a large extent.
Use case
Within the framework of the SMART FACE project various
fundamental challenges in pilot applications in automotive
production <strong>are</strong> examined. The key questions here <strong>are</strong>: How
can information flows be parallelised with the material flow?
How can responses to unforeseen changes in the production
workflow be improved in terms of both time and quality?
How is the intelligence of the objects and their sensors
defined and which decision patterns must be defined? The
solutions to all of the above challenges will be tested in the
specific application case and <strong>are</strong> to be transferred to other
sectors. Starting with the <strong>we</strong>aknesses in today‘s production
methods, which basically do not permit any economically
efficient small series production, new planning algorithms
<strong>are</strong> developed and integrated into an operating concept.
Moreover, softw<strong>are</strong> components that meet with the standards
set by the automotive sector <strong>are</strong> designed. The distri-
A demonstrator that is presented to trade professionals
on the exhibition stand of the Federal Ministry of Economics
and Energy at the Hannover Messe from 13.04.-
17.04.2015 impressively shows the status of the project.
Here, the future of flexible automotive production within
the framework of Industry 4.0 is presented on a smaller
scale. Automobiles <strong>are</strong> “produced” on flexible production
stations while autonomous robots <strong>are</strong> bringing the bodyworks
to the next workstation. Other robots supply the
stations with material. Almost all robots originate from a
3D printer of the Frauenhofer Institute for Material Flow
and Logistics and control themselves. The softw<strong>are</strong> for the
coordination of these mobile robots was developed by LinogistiX.
The robots receive the order data from the cloud
platform logistics mall.
for the door manufacturer that also exports goods
beyond the European borders. In 2014 to Ethiopia and
Mongolia.
Addis Ababa is the capital of the East African country Ethiopia.
3.3 million people live here bet<strong>we</strong>en modern city life
and poverty. “Addis Ababa is also the seat of the African Union,
an institution comparable to the EU in Europe”, Burkard
Hessing, export manager at LEBO, explains. Since 2008, the
African Union has planned the capital’s Peace and Security
Building – and since 2013, LEBO has been involved. “A really
exciting project on which I have been working for more than
a year now”, says Hessing. The entire building is financed by
the German Federal Foreign Office and supported by Gesellschaft
für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). “Even the
German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier wanted to
visit the building team on site”, Burkhard Hessing says.
Detailed planning –
controlled from Bocholt
“The entire building is being constructed according to
German standards, which is why <strong>we</strong> also rely on German
suppliers”, the export manager explains. To determine
the exact demand for doors and frames, Burkhard Hessing
has been in permanent contact with the building
site managers over a period of six months. He has received
plans and looked through them again and again
before submitting an offer based on all the information
received. In view of all challenges such a project involves,
the people in Bocholt <strong>are</strong> more than happy that
the doors <strong>we</strong>re shipped at the end of 2014. In total, 276
doors – most of them functional doors for fire safety and
sound absorption – will be shipped all the way to Ethiopia
by container as <strong>we</strong>ll as by air. The Peace and Security
Building in Ethiopia is expected to be finished in the beginning
of 2015.
Another and totally different project LEBO realised in 2013
is the furnishings of high-quality apartments in Ulan Bator
in Mongolia. High-quality interior doors <strong>are</strong> already on their
way to Mongolia by container and by railway – including a
packaging especially adapted to the transSiberian Railway.
“In contrast to the project in Ethiopia, this is not about functional
doors. Only high-quality interior doors <strong>are</strong> delivered to
Mongolia and installed in the apartments”, Maximilian Löhr
explains. The investor of this construction project has been
interested in working with German companies. “To ensure
both a high-quality product and a correct installation, <strong>we</strong>
even sent a technician from Bocholt to Ulan Bator to provide
training in the professional installation according to German
standards”, says Löhr. “Both export projects clearly show that
LEBO is the right partner not only for functional doors but
also for designer doors.”
Three members of staff from Tirana will be trained in
Bocholt-based door and frame producer LEBO is
bringing celebrity architect Daniel Libeskind’s latest
project to life.
The Albanian investor contacted the Bocholt firm in summer
2014. ‘We <strong>are</strong> of course thrilled to be able to carry out a
project by Daniel Libeskind using our products’, said head of
export Burkhard Hessing, who has already seen the ‘Magnet’
construction project in Albania for himself.
‘Magnet’ – a district that stands for freedom
and democracy
‘Magnet is set to be a new <strong>are</strong>a of Tirana that attracts
anything and anyone. It consists of 14 buildings and a school’,
said the local construction firm. The tip of the Eagle in Flight
In the future, traffic in the <strong>are</strong>a will be completely diverted
be planted to provide both food and shade – quality of life
is paramount.
From the standard to the individual door
The investor then came to Bocholt to see the production
facility for himself and ultimately chose LEBO. ‘In late January
<strong>we</strong> sent the first 400 of 7,000 doors to Tirana so they could
be fitted’, said Hessing. These doors <strong>are</strong> standard models and
▶ Team effort: The installation of a new drilling line
above. The connection of the tool to the customer’s resource
allows transferring offers as <strong>we</strong>ll as orders to the customer’s
To also keep the quality standard of LEBO products
at a high level in future, LEBO installed a new drilling
line in the state-of-the-art plant in Bocholt.
The new drilling line allows integrating locks and
hinges much faster than before. Thanks to a fully automatic
operation and milling patterns that <strong>are</strong> already stored in the
control unit and identified by scanning the doors’ barcodes,
the doors <strong>are</strong> produced in a constantly high quality and with
a reliable throughput time. Besides, the new machine stands
out for its versatile use for challenging tasks: Conversions
such as drilling spyholes can thus be done in record time
and in a quality that meets highest demands on precision.
While there <strong>we</strong>re several piles that under<strong>we</strong>nt identical production
processes created in the past – like milling at the
machine centres, further processing and packaging – this
machine now allows producing a larger number of product
variants during the production flow. Moreover, there <strong>are</strong> now
six instead of two stacking positions at the end of the machine
and the doors <strong>are</strong> packed fully automatically. This is also
taken into consideration when dispatching the orders and
ensures an efficient use of the machine, which has a positive
impact on the entire production process at LEBO.
A revolutionary solution
for specialist retailers:
LEBOlution – simple – fast – safe – <strong>we</strong>b-based
LEBOlution is not only a calculation programme, but a comprehensive
calculation and order solution that is completely
<strong>we</strong>b-based. About 97 % of the available LEBO products
can easily be calculated and ordered. Thanks to plausibility
checks, there is hardly anything that could go wrong and the
introduction to the tool only takes about half an hour. After
that, the user is able to choose and configure complex door
systems in no longer than a minute – fast and safe, as the
tool makes sure that the mountings or necessary accessories
of the doors and frames <strong>are</strong> compatible with each other. So
LEBOlution means both evolution and revolution. The evolu-
« The Video Guide as a
New Means of Visualisation»
▶ The wm.mediapro team during the shooting
Besides, there will be video guides about aviation security,
occupational safety as <strong>we</strong>ll as about the company’s
general rules and the Kühne + Nagel production system –
in short: knps – that ensures the constant improvement of
processes and the creation of value.
◀ In conversation with: Björn Schlenker, head of the
Logistics Training Centre, Kühne + Nagel
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: You engaged wm.mediapro GmbH to shoot video
guides in your company buildings – for what <strong>are</strong>as do you
want to use these guides?
Björn Schlenker: The guides <strong>we</strong>re shot in our branch offices
in Duisburg, Langenbach, Straubing and Niederaichbach.
One process that will be explained in a video guide
in future is sequencing. As <strong>we</strong> have many customers from
the automotive industry, sequencing – which means the
commissioning in a special, predefined sequence that is important
for later production – is of high importance.
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: How do you want to use the video guides?
Björn Schlenker: The video guides will be part of our internal
training and of the training of new employees. Of course,
they do not replace a trainer, ho<strong>we</strong>ver, video guides offer
new and modern possibilities to train staff. We <strong>are</strong> very keen
to see the employees’ reactions on the finished guides and
how the videos will finally be integrated into the training. For
us, this is a pilot project together with wm.mediapro GmbH.
So far, there have been no video guides at Kühne + Nagel –
so it’s really exciting.
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: Why did you opt for living pictures?
Björn Schlenker: In our group of companies, <strong>we</strong> all place
great demands on the training of employees and <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong> always
eager to improve in this <strong>are</strong>a, too. This special means
of visualisation is a new way to train our employees. It is
our responsibility to offer each employee the best possible
qualification and for this, living pictures <strong>are</strong> a new, special
means of visualisation that will be a part of our extensive
qualification measures in future.
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: What benefits do you think the use of video guides
could have?
Björn Schlenker: We make every effort to develop sustainable
teaching concepts. This is not that easy, especially in
such a dynamic environment like the logistics sector.
Nowadays, the technology is so flexible that <strong>we</strong> <strong>are</strong>
able to especially adapt it to every customer order. The
company’s success stands or falls with the employees who
Björn Schlenker: We have worked closely together
with wm.mediapro GmbH as partners. We already got together
with the managing director Ann-Kathrin Löhr in January
to contemplate first plans. It only became concrete
in June, when the scripts <strong>we</strong>re written in cooperation with
experts. On the basis of these scripts, the shootings <strong>we</strong>re
then made. wm.mediapro GmbH has offered exactly the
very customer-oriented in what they did and the correction
« Modern and successful:
Training through moving images»
▶ The Duvenbeck Group uses video guides
Bernd Reining: Together with wm.mediapro GmbH, <strong>we</strong>
made a film for our drivers. It is about both the presentation
of the Duvenbeck Group as <strong>we</strong>ll as about initial training to
familiarize our drivers with everything important about their
vehicles and with their <strong>are</strong>a of responsibility.
▶ Shooting on site
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: The film was also shot beyond the borders of Germany...
Bernd Reining: That’s right. The first film, ho<strong>we</strong>ver, was
shot here at the locations in Germany. Our training managers
<strong>we</strong>re of course always involved and contributed their
expertise in the development of the script, the shooting and
the post production. Also including the requirements such a
film has to meet outside of Germany.
The film created this way was translated into Spanish,
Hungarian, Slovakian, Polish and Rumanian to address everyone
in their native language. The management teams on
site suggested to shoot some of the scenes directly at the
respective location. In this way, <strong>we</strong> can reach our employees
even better and also depict special national requirements.
Four countries – one film project: In recent months,
wm.mediapro GmbH has realised a special video
guide project together with the Duvenbeck Group.
In the following interview, the fleet manager of the
Group Bernd Reinig gives us an insight into the motivation
for choosing moving images and, of course, into the video
guide project itself.
for training purposes, you have realised films together with
wm.mediapro GmbH. What kind of films did you make?
In the end, <strong>we</strong> actually made four films that <strong>are</strong> individually
adapted to the respective country. These films that have
been successfully used for the training of the drivers since
then.
<strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>: Why did you decide to include video guides into
your training programme?
Bernd Reining: Firstly, <strong>we</strong> <strong>we</strong>re really impressed with the
sample videos they sho<strong>we</strong>d us in the first meetings – those
films <strong>we</strong>re directly addressed the drivers and sho<strong>we</strong>d them
as the representative of the customer’s and the company’s
name. Those impressions <strong>we</strong>re really lasting impressions for
me, as I have never seen it before. Besides, the best practice
idea surely also played a role. We want to use the best way
to train our staff – in this case our drivers – and to familiarize
them with the company.
everyone was focused and the film team constantly brought
forward good ideas. Even though our employees have never
Thanks to the excellent preparation on both sides, <strong>we</strong>
« Historically Grown: <strong>LB</strong> GmbH »
More than just a logistics
company
From now on, <strong>we</strong> would like to regularly
give you an insight into the history of <strong>LB</strong>
GmbH. This first part provides an overview.
In the following issues of <strong>LB</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>,
<strong>we</strong> will take a closer look at individual events of
the company group’s history.
The beginning as Westmünsterland-Spedition
GmbH
The foundation stone of <strong>LB</strong> GmbH as <strong>we</strong> know
it today was already laid 64 years ago. In 1951,
Westmünsterland-Spedition GmbH was founded
with its headquarters on Hindenburgstraße in
Bocholt, Germany. During the following 30 years,
the company became firmly established in the
sector and the orange trucks with the WM logo
on them belonged to the daily scenery far beyond
Bocholt’s boundaries. In the early 80s, WM-Transport GmbH was founded.
This company not only dealt with local and long-distance transportation, but
also with overseas packaging and the trading of packaging materials. In the following
years, the logistics company grew constantly, WM-Handelslogistik GmbH
and WM-Kontraktlogistik <strong>we</strong>re founded and, until 2000, 10 logistics locations
<strong>we</strong>re opened in Germany, Austria and Great Britain.
1951
until 2015
Beside the core business in the field of logistics,
the Löhr family as a sh<strong>are</strong>holder early
realized that this sector was further developing
and that customers’ requirements would
soon start to increase. In 2005, EUREGIO Systemhaus
– now Logata GmbH, part of the
group of companies and already owned by
WM Holding back then – took over sh<strong>are</strong>s of
Lanfer Systemhaus. This is how the IT division
and the feeling of togetherness of <strong>LB</strong> GmbH
developed. Areas of competence <strong>we</strong>re combined
to be able to fulfil the increasing demands
in the field of logistics and IT – and what’s more: With the development of
the logistics mall, Logata GmbH realized together with the Frauenhofer Institute
where the future was heading, and, since 2013, the company offers IT services for
each sector on the virtual marketplace.
In 2006, WM Holding took over the LEBO group before founding an own media
company, the wm.mediapro GmbH, in 2009.
<strong>LB</strong> GmbH – a diverse group of companies
In March 2005, WM Holding
GmbH was renamed <strong>LB</strong> GmbH
with its headquarters on Am
Gut Baarking in Bocholt, Germany.
Soon, the four divisions
Logistics, IT, Production and
Media <strong>we</strong>re established – and
they still endure today.
whiteboard. During the so-called shop floor management,
all projects the team is currently working on and all projects
that <strong>are</strong> still to be done <strong>are</strong> discussed. “This helps us
to stay on top of things. Who did what and how long did
it take? This enables us to calculate and to sensibly arrange
our work,” Peter Wecking explains. After 15 minutes, all
employees apply themselves to their tasks. The shop floor
management should be short but meaningful.
<strong>LB</strong> GmbH is a group of companies with four divisions, 13 companies and more than 800 employees. In our new
section, <strong>we</strong> would like to give you an insight into different departments. Who does what? A question <strong>we</strong> will
ans<strong>we</strong>r bit by bit in every issue.
Peter Wecking has been working as the product manager of wm.mediapro GmbH since 2011. Every working day is different.
The 34-year old manager and his team always take up new challenges to produce individual videos. “The requirements
<strong>are</strong> constantly changing, just like <strong>we</strong> do. In this business, standing still is totally out of place,” Peter Wecking says.
09:30 am – After a cup of coffee, it’s time to pack the bags.
Not just any bags, but special ones for lighting equipment,
camera and other gadgets. A shooting is on the agenda and
everything has to be neatly sto<strong>we</strong>d for transport. The proper
functioning of the equipment was already tested the day
before. “At the customer’s premises, everything has to work
smoothly. This is why good planning is so essential for video
production,” the media pro says. For this reason, they not only
need camera, tripod and lighting equipment for a shooting,
but also a detailed script. In this way, the film makers know
exactly what to shoot.

10:30 am – Together with film editor Torsten Hänsch, Peter
Wecking arrives at the location. Today, they want to shoot
a part of a video guide. As the scenes of the film have to
be shot at different locations, the production lasts several
days. Before the shooting really starts, the manager and the
customer have a talk to settle last questions and to give instructions.
As the location of the shooting was already visited
previously, the team can immediately start to install the
equipment. After the lighting and camera setup, the shooting
can start. It is not uncommon that a scene is shot several
times. “We want to achieve the perfect result for our
customers and this sometimes requires several attempts. Not
every scene is done perfectly at the first go. Moreover, <strong>we</strong>
want to take shots from different perspectives to make the
film more varied,” he ans<strong>we</strong>rs the question of why the same
scene is shot several times.
▶ Everything in view: When shooting a film, the details <strong>are</strong> essential
15:00 pm – For now, the shooting is over, Peter Wecking is
back in the office. Together with Torsten Hänsch, he looks
through the video material already shot. Favourised images
<strong>are</strong> directly dragged into the cutting softw<strong>are</strong> to make sure
that the final cutting does not take so long. The film won’t be
finished today. For one thing, the post-production takes a lot
of time, for the other, there <strong>are</strong> not all scenes for the film in
the can yet.
16:15 pm – Another reason is that Peter Wecking needs to
get to the next appointment. This time, the appointment
takes place in the conference room of wm.mediapro GmbH.
A new customer wants to have a film, which is why first details
<strong>are</strong> to be discussed. “I always prep<strong>are</strong> myself for a meeting
with a customer by gathering and going through all
information I already have. Moreover, I will present different
films <strong>we</strong> made so that the customer gets an idea of what <strong>we</strong>
do,” the 34-year old production manager explains. As the old
saying goes: A picture is worth a thousand words.
17:15 pm – Let’s call it a day! Peter Wecking is on its way
home. Tomorrow will be a new, varied day with many exciting
tasks.
