Protective clothing against herbicides, pesticides ...
In agriculture, when applying chemicals for crop
protection, a worker can come in contact with
concentrated, sometimes toxic and/or aggressive
pesticide formulations. Other chemicals can
accumulate in the body after dermal contact and
be harmful to the workers’ health after repetitive
exposure over longer periods.
The materials safety data sheets of crop protection
chemicals often go no further than saying:
“appropriate PPE must be selected”
Today a lot of European farmers protect themselves
with cotton or cotton/polyester coveralls. Indeed for
some low risk level chemicals (such as highly water
diluted application formulations) this is believed to be
sufficient. However... during tasks such as mixing and
loading, a worker comes in contact with concentrated
(sometimes toxic and/or aggressive) pesticide
formulations. Being situated in the very middle of one
of the most important vegetable growing areas in
Europe, it is obvious that SIOEN puts a lot of interest
in the protection of agricultural workers. Today, there
is no specific EN standard for protective clothing for
operators applying pesticides. Some countries have
their own approach and there is a draft ISO standard
pr EN ISO 27065 which is being discussed within
CEN. The efforts that SIOEN has done, since the
introduction of directive 89/686/EC, to demonstrate
that the PPE which we offer for agricultural use is ‘fit
for purpose’, correspond very well with the approach
of this ISO/DIS document.
SIOEN’s EN 14605 certified protective FLEXOTHANE®
clothing has been additionally tested against the
aqueous reference formulations for Emulsifiable
Concentrates (EC), Emulsions - Oil in Water (EW),
Suspension Concentrate (SC), Soluble Concentrate
(SL) and Water Dispersible Granules (WG) as
specified in the normative part of DIN 32781:2007. No
penetration was detected!
