EN ISO 11612: Protective Clothing to protect
against heat and flame

EN ISO 11612 specifies performance
requirements for protective clothing which
are designed to protect the wearer’s body
(except hands) from heat and/or flame. The
performance requirements set out in EN ISO
11612 are applicable to protective clothing
which could be worn for a wide range of
uses, where there is a need for clothing
with limited flame spread properties and
where the user can be exposed to radiant or
convective or contact heat or to molten metal
splashes. The standard is not applicable for
fire fighters (EN 469) and welders
(EN ISO 11611)
Requirements include: performance
after pre-treatment of fabric, accessories,
hardware, mechanical properties (tear-;
tensile-; burst-; seam strengths) dimensional
stability; clothing design, etc.
(supersedes EN 531)
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR HEAT TRANSMISSION
Different performance levels have been defined. Indicated times (Heat Transfer Indexes) or weights are
those required to invoke a temperature rise of 24°C at the calorimeter.
A: A1 or A2 (surface or edge ignition):
the materials obtained index 3 in test ISO
15025 (cfr EN ISO 14116)
B: Convective heat ISO 9151
