Protection against the risks
when in contact with flames and heat
EN ISO 14116
EN ISO 14116: Protective Clothing- Limited
flame spread of materials, material assemblies
and clothing
Index X
EN ISO 14116 specifies the performance
requirements for the limited flame spread
properties of materials, material assemblies
and protective clothing in order to reduce the
possibility of the clothing burning and thereby
itself constituting a hazard. The wearer should
not get extra injuries due to the burning of this
clothing. Additional requirements for clothing are
also specified.
Protective clothing complying with this EN ISO
14116 is intended to protect workers against
occasional and brief contact with small igniting
flames, in circumstances where there is no
significant heat hazard and without presence
of another type of heat. When protection
against heat hazards is necessary in addition to
protection against limited spread flammability,
then standards, such as EN ISO 11612, are more
appropriate. A classification system is given for
materials, material assemblies and garments
which are tested according to EN ISO 15025,
Procedure A.
(supersedes EN 533)
TEST METHOD EN ISO 15025 :
limited flame spread of materials for use in garments which protect against heat and flames.
This test measures the limited spread of fl ames of vertically oriented textile fabrics (one or several layers),
when subjected to a small defi ned fl ame. A defi ned fl ame from a specifi ed burner is applied for 10 seconds
to the surface or to the bottom edge. For the fl ame, propane is preferred. The standard describes the
burner in detail.
After the 10 seconds ignition, the lab notes:
a. whether the flame reaches any edge of the test
fabric
b. the afterflame time
c. whether the afterglow spreads into the
undamaged area
d. the occurrence of debris
e. whether a hole develops
