Directive 89/686/EC: Compliance Assessment Procedure
This directive defines the criteria for the
application of the CE-mark on Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE). This
directive is applied to PPE intended for
professional use as well as use in other activities.
It refers to harmonized European (EN) standards
to facilitate the proof of compliance to these basic
requirements. As soon as a manufacturer claims that
his equipment has protective properties, it becomes
a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The CE-mark
is compulsory for all PPE which is commercialized in
the European market.
For the compliance assessment procedure the PPE
is divided in 3 different categories, according to the
risk it protects against. Each category has another
procedure for certification.
