Flame retardant
The key feature of flame retardant clothes is that they have limited flame spread
properties. When you accidently come into contact with flames, flame-retardant
(FR) clothes will have limited afterflame once the source is removed and will not
constitute a hazard in itself for the wearer. Flame retardant garments do not drip or
melt, whereas non FR clothes will keep on burning with flaming and melting debris
and thus causing severe burn injuries to the wearer.

The flame retardant properties of a fabric are controlled by either inherent fibre
configuration or by a durable treatment of the fabric. Garments according to
EN ISO 11612 also offer protection against heat and flame hazards thus limiting
the risk on 2 nd and 3 rd degree burns. These heat hazards include convective,
radiation and contact heat plus hazards caused by projection of molten iron.
