white marmor stones, sixth by size in the world,
and surely one of the most beautiful.
HISTORY OF IRONMAN 14
IRONMAN PULA TEAM 16
Pula is situated on the beautiful Adriatic coast
The city has a long tradition of winemaking,
on the southernmost part of the Istrian peninsula
in a well protected bay known by its Latin
name, Pietas Iulia. It is a city full of history,
where nearly every stone has a story to tell. The
early beginnings of Pula date back three millennia
to the Colchis seafarers in search of the
„Golden Fleece“ who established Pula some
3,000 years ago.
Much like the rest of the region, Pula has mild
climate and is famous for its unspoiled nature.
The favourable geographical position, history
and rich cultural and historical monuments
make Pula one of the most attractive tourist
fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism.
Therefore, the Finish Line will be in the Arena
with an energized atmosphere, together with all
supporters and triathlon enthusiasts. Have you
ever wondered what it would be like to enter an
amphitheater as a finisher? Imagine the deafening
sound, the excitement and the rush of adrenalin.
You will feel like a modern gladiator coming into
the Arena to celebrate your own victory!
Every step you take through the old town is a
landmark, foremost its numerous monuments of
Roman architecture.
PULA
WELCOME TO THE
3000 YEARS OF HISTORY
The history of Pula starts with the myth of the
Argonauts and the search for the Golden Fleece.
It was the home of the Histrians, the Romans and
the Venetians.
Once the central Austrian port, today it is the largest
cultural and economic center of Istria. Various
layers of history took part in the making of this
unique town in which Roman temples defy baroque
palaces, early Christian churches stand face to face
to Austrian villas, and the remnants of mediaeval
walls are cut through by antique town gates. The
legend of the Argonauts describes the pursuit of
the Colchidians after the ship Argo and the Golden
Fleece. The subjects of the king of Colchis gave up
further pursuit after the death of their king’s son.
Fearing that they would be punished for his death
and the failure of the quest if they returned to Colchis,
they decided to settle where the prince had
died. Pula therefore became not only a harbor of
refuge to the Colchidian fugitives, but also their
place of exile. The most famous geographer of the
antiquity, Strabo, claims that this is how Pula was
founded and according to this legend, it was about
three thousand yaers ago.
THE ARENA, THE JEWEL
OF ROMAN ARCHITECTURE
And then, you will come across the Amphitheatre,
revealing itself to you in all its beauty. This
is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres
in the world, the most significant monument
in Pula! Arena, the place where gladiators faced
lions, used to be able to entertain 25 000 spectators.
Although the site of bloody games in the
past, the Arena has in modern times transformed
into a stage for a very different kind of entertainment.
It is the venue of a film festival
and great summer performances and concerts.
As the largest existing monument of
Roman architecture in Croatia, it is living
proof of the top-level skills of the masterbuilders
of antiquity.
ISTRIA
The Adriatic below the Alps, central Europe’s closest
Mediterranean. This miniature heart-shaped world
and the largest peninsula of the Adriatic Sea lies
on the 45th parallel emphasizing its idyllic geographical
position with perfectly arranged seasons -
lush greenery springs, colourful autumns, pleasant
summers and mild winters...
Istria is indeed a feast for the eyes. Its streams
flow to the sea through deep valleys and gullies
which bring to mind the ancient local myths about
giants. Rolling hills overlook the fields and valleys
with little towns perched on the peaks, recalling
some old paintings. The view is splendid: whitetopped
mountains, lush wheat fields, plateaux,
valleys, vineyards and olive groves on hillsides, and,
finally the sea.
As you get to know Istria you will notice more and
more enchanting details: church facades and por-
tals, tiny village alleyways with their specific architectural
touches, the babble of a stream, the
blossoming cherries. Everything is warm–hearted
and friendly here: nature, towns and people.
CROATIA
Croatia is a small country with beautiful nature, interesting
tradition and past, rich cultural heritage,
diverse gastronomy…
Croatia has a favorable geographic position since
it is situated in the southeast of Europe, where the
Mediterranean, Middle Europe and Southeast Europe
(the Balkans) meet.
With its 1.185 islands, islets and rocks, numerous
bays, coves and beaches, Croatia has one of the most
indented coasts in the Mediterranean and rightly
deserves to be called the country with a thousand
islands. There are 8 national parks in Croatia, their
untouched nature occupies almost 8% of Croatia‘s
surface area. The national parks are the following:
Brijuni, Kornati, Krka, Mljet, Paklenica, Plitvice
Lakes, Risnjak and North Velebit.
Croatia is the country with the biggest
number of protected non-material cultural
phenomena in Europe - Festa Sv.
Vlaha (St.Blaise Celebration Day), lacemaking
in Lepoglava and islands of
Hvar and Pag, zvončari (bellmen) from
the Kastav area, the cross procession,
overtone singing and playing the Istrian
scale, spring procession of Ljelje (queens)
and traditional manufacturing of wooden toys
from Hrvatsko zagorje.
JOHN COLLINS, IRONMAN CO-FOUNDER
GET STARTED
During an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, John
Collins, a Naval Officer stationed in Hawai`i, and his wife
Judy, began playing with the idea of combining the three
toughest endurance races on the island into one race: the
2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the 112 miles of the
Around-O’ahu Bike Race and a 26.2 mile run on the same
course as the Honolulu Marathon. They decided to issue a
challenge to see who the toughest athletes were: swimmers,
bikers, or runners. ”The gun will go off about 7 a.m.,
the clock will keep running and whoever finishes first we’ll
call the IRONMAN”, Collins recalled.
1
2
On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including
Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on
the first-ever IRONMAN challenge. First to cross
the finish line was Gordon Haller, a taxi cab driver
and fitness enthusiast, who finished in 11 hours,
46 minutes and 58 seconds.
In 1980 founders John and Judy Collins give ABC‘s
„Wide World of Sports” permission to film the event,
bringing worldwide recognition to IRONMAN.
Only two years later college student Julie Moss
collapses just yards from the IRONMAN World
Championship finish line. She is passed for the
title, but does not give up; she crawls to the finish
line, unknowingly creating one of the most iconic
moments in IRONMAN history. Julie’s courage and
determination inspires millions and created the
IRONMAN mantra that ”ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”.
In 1986, Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe, won
her first IRONMAN Kona, setting a new women’s
record of 9:45:14. In 1992, she became the first
woman ever to eclipse the nine-hour mark with
an 8:55:28 performance and in 1996 she wins her
eighth IRONMAN World Championship title.
In 1996, Lothar Leder from Germany became the
first athlete to break the eight-hour barrier with a
time of 7:57:02 at IRONMAN Europe.
With the recognition of the Physically Challenged
Athletes in 1997, Australian John MacLean
becomes the first athlete to power a hand cycle
bike and wheelchair to an official IRONMAN
World Championship finish. In the same year, Jim
Ward competes as the first 80-year-old in Kona
race history.
In 2006, the IRONMAN 70.3 – Series have been
introduced. Until 2010, the IRONMAN 70.3 World
Championships took place at Clearwater, Florida
before moving to Las Vegas. The first World
Champion was Craig Alexander from Australia. From
2014 on, this event is about to travel around the
world with changing venues every year.
4
Today, hundreds of thousands of triathletes from
around the world have challenged themselves
to prove to friends, loved ones, and even just
themselves that „Anything is Possible©”. Kona,
Hawai’i is nowadays the most wanted goal for
each triathlete. Nearly 2.000 athletes in age from
19 to over 80 years of age and from more than 60
countries get the chance to participate at Kona
each year, qualified by having earned a slot being
provided at each IRONMAN event around the world.
In 2014, the German athlete Sebastian Kienle
became IRONMAN World Champion, being the
first athlete who won the IRONMAN European
Championship and the IRONMAN World
Championship in the same year.
CASTING SHOW
- NOT ON TV
The Austrian triathlon magazine “FINISHER”, which was founded in 2006, aims to cover a wide range
of endurance sports, ranging from articles about professional athletes and international races over to
profound insights into the sports and the people who contribute to them.
In order to provide first-hand stories of triathletes
of all performance levels, the magazine organizes
a casting every year and chooses six athletes to
be supported and portrayed over the period of
the training and race year. In its third generation,
the team receives expert coaching including
performance testing and is professionally equipped
STEFAN
MÜLLNER
by sponsors such as Sailfish or Skinfit in order
to compete. While some team members have
pursued the sport for some time, others train for
and compete in a triathlon for the first time and
share their experiences with more versed team
members as well as with the readers. For all of this
year’s ”Finisher” team members, the main competition
and grand finale of their training will be the
same: The Ironman Pula 70.3.
In order to see how the athletes have spent their
year so far and to get an insight in their training,
just follow our Facebook page “FINISHER Magazin”,
check our hashtag #roadtopula or get your free
copy of the magazine available at our ”FINISHER
Magazin” mobile home at the venue.
HOW TO EARN POINTS IN
TRICLUB-PROGRAM? HOW TO
BECOME WINNER?
The European IRONMAN TriClub Championship is a
unique opportunity for European clubs to compete
in selected IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races selected
up to today. By registering for the free program,
the clubs do benefit from a range of benefits
and have the opportunity to compete with other
clubs in a regional and global competition!
Each club and each team is assigned by its members
number one of five categories (divisions). All club
members then link in their IRONMAN account their
personal profile with their club. By participating in
the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events, athletes
accumulate points. These are calculated as the Age
Group IRONMAN ranking for each athlete
• an age group winner gets 3500 (at 70.3) or 5000
points (at 140.6)
• an athlete that comes eg 10min after the winner,
then 10 x 12 points of 3500 will be deducted; he
then got 3380 points
• should an athlete have a time difference greater
than „Time to Floor”, so he gets in any case the
„Minimum Points”
• Qualified Clubs are counted with the 5 best
athletes for the ranking (but it may more than 5
athletes start)
• The club with the most accumulated points in the
Divisions will be European Champion TriClub
• Honored with trophies are the first 3 clubs in
each division
2. COMPETITION: THE RANKING AT THE
END OF HE YEAR
The athletes also earn points by participating in any
IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 event which incorporated
most points at the end in the regional and global
TriClub ranking. The current survey can be found
here: RANKING
