FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
EMCC President Dr. Tom Huebner and Nick Clark visit with alums Billy Eskridge and
Kline Shepherd prior to kickoff of the Lions’ football season opener Aug. 27 in Scooba.
We are very proud to welcome new president, Dr. Tom Huebner, and his family
to EMCC.
Dr. Huebner comes to us from Shelton State in Tuscaloosa, Ala. I am very excited
and look forward to the direction that Dr. Huebner will lead EMCC. He will
build on the groundwork laid by Dr. Tommy Davis in the 1990s when we were on
verge of closing and on the amazing accomplishments of Dr. Rick Young. I believe
Dr. Huebner is the man who will lead us to even greater success.
What a great time to be Lion!
It’s unbelievable how much is happening!
New buildings are in progress, and more are on the drawing board. We will
be in the student union building on the GT campus in 2016. Our $40M “Communiversity”
building located about 1 mile east of the GT campus will be under construction
very soon. On the Scooba campus, plans are under way for
badly-needed new student housing, an athletic center and the Kemper County
Multipurpose Building. The multipurpose building will house a basketball arena as
well as a storm shelter and evacuation center.
Enrollment is up, which is a great testament to our excellent faculty, as well
as the academic achievement of our students.
All of our athletic teams had yet another banner year. The EMCC football
team is the reigning national champion for three of the last four years. Both men’s
and women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play. Our baseball Lions
had their best finish in several years, advanced in postseason play and ranked nationally
during the year. Our Lion golf team hosted the state tournament at Lion
Hills. The rodeo team had their highest national ranking to date; one of our bull
riders finished sixth in the nation and he was only one second off from winning the
whole thing. Softball, once again, earned one of the top GPAs in the nation.
In the last five years, the Mighty Lion Marching Band has grown from about
30 members to about 160 members. You have to hear them to fully appreciate
how good our band is. We have the numbers but, more importantly, we have
quality band members. Our band will be performing in the Thanksgiving Day parade
at Disney World.
Speaking of the Mighty Lion Band, at homecoming this year the band hall
will be dedicated to the Dottie Smith Family. Dottie and her family were not only
instrumental in building the Chapel in The Pines, but also contributed greatly to
the band hall renovation.
The Bull Sullivan Memorial Division of the EMCC Development Foundation
was formed in 1994 to support both athletics and instructional programs. To date
we have raised several million dollars in support of EMCC. The Sullivan Committee
hosts three big events each year (see page 12). But there are many other
ways to give back to the college that gave you so much. My challenge to all
Alumni and friends: get involved--you will be glad that you did.
Take Care,
Nick
Nick Clark is EMCC Vice President for
Instutitional Advancement and Alumni Affairs
RUNNING
Advances in instruction
and infrastructure are
still the norm at EMCC
As a brief recap, since 2010 EMCC has constructed the
new Sullivan-Windham Stadium (complete with a sevenfoot
bronze statue of Coach Robert “Bull” Sullivan), the
Orr Center for Christian Activity and the F.R. Young Student
Union, all at the Scooba campus. In that same span,
the college has purchased a country club and turned it into
Lion Hills, instituted an Honors Program at the Scooba and
Golden Triangle campuses, restructured all manufacturing
related Career-Technical programs under the newly formed
Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Division at
the Golden Triangle campus and helped attract literally
thousands of high-paying, high-tech jobs to our six-county
district via the Workforce Services Division.
In terms of accomplishments, we’ve been named to the
Aspen Institute College Excellence Program’s Top 150
Community Colleges in the country, produced a Guistwhite
Scholar, grown the band by nearly 300 percent and
marched in nationally televised parades and won three of
the last four NJCAA National Football Championships.
And those are just the biggest items, which amounts to
all-time great stretch for any American community college
before we even factor in the smaller gains. But we’re not
even close to finished.
Golden Triangle Student Union
By summer of 2016, Golden Triangle campus administrators
and instructors should be moving into the newly
completed Student Union, and preparing for a grand opening
to students in August.
The two-story, 76,000-square-foot building will include
12 multi-purpose classrooms, a lecture hall and computer
lab with seating for about 100 people, large and
small conference rooms, a bookstore, a large cafeteria with
Instructor Ben Harris demonstrates one of the training modules
for the Manufacturing Technology & Engineering Division’s new
Electro-mechanical Program.
WITH NO BRAKES
Plans for a Sports Operations
Center are still under way for
the Scooba campus.
an open dining area and a couple of private dining
rooms, an art gallery and space for a small
fitness room. The facility will be open to students,
staff and members of the community.
Both the campus vice president and dean of
students will relocate to the Student Union to
centralize campus administration, as will the
president’s Golden Triangle office.
The space vacated in the current administration
building will be used to expand the financial aid
and admissions offices.
Communiversity
The MTE Division has just about outgrown
the original Center for Manufacturing Technology
Excellence at the Golden Triangle campus.
But with new industrial partners like Yokohama
Tire Manufacturing Mississippi in Clay County
and the addition of all manufacturing Career-
Technical programs to its purview, it’s time to
get a bigger place.
Approximately $37 million has already
been allocated from federal, state and local
funds to erect the CMTE 2.0 — or Communiversity
— at the entrance to the Golden Triangle
Global Industrial Aerospace Park, just a few
miles from the Golden Triangle campus. The
expansive training center will house all of the
MTE Division’s non-credit Workforce Services
courses, as well as all manufacturing based
credit programs. The current CMTE portion of
the Golden Triangle campus will be renovated
to house EMCC’s allied health programs.
Instruction
With the influx of highly automated manufacturing
processes to the Golden Triangle, the
need has arisen for multiple tiers of employees
to make these extremely complex systems
work. There are the operators, currently being
trained in our Workforce Services non-credit
courses, the programmers, many of whom come
from EMCC’s Automation & Control Program,
and a third tier that has been under-manned
The Golden Triangle campus Student Union is on track to open for the fall semester of 2016.
until now: Maintenance.
To train technicians to troubleshoot and repair
the new generation of automated systems,
the MTE Division began the Electro-mechanical
Technician Program this year at the GT
campus.
The program will train technicians to troubleshoot
fully functioning production lines that
incorporate pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical
controls, computer controls, PLCs (programmable
logic controls) and robotics. And we’re even
starting to integrate vision controls and RFID
(radio frequency identification).
To offer students further specialization in
the field, in 2017 EMCC plans to make a oneyear
Mechatronics Advanced Technical Certificate
program available to Electro-mechanical
graduates. The additional Mechatronics certificate
will build on the principles covered in the
Electro-mechanical program and continue to refine
the high level troubleshooting skills employers
are seeking.
Additional courses coming online this year
include a Landscape Technology Program,
which joins the existing Recreational Turf Management
Program at Lion Hills, and a Mississippi
National Guard ROTC program called
Magnolia Gold.
EMCC is also eying an opportunity to expand
our Workforce Services non-credit courses
and Launchpad Adult Basic Education-GED
courses into Oktibbeha County at the former
West Oktibbeha High School campus. The consolidation
of the Starkville and Oktibbeha
County school districts has left WOHS vacant,
thus providing a potential future satellite campus.
More exciting developments in instruction
include the founding of Mississippi’s first early
college high school on our Golden Triangle
campus and the all-new WGTC 92.7 FM
EMCC Radio.
CHAMPS AGAIN
For a third time in the past four seasons, East Mississippi Community College captured an NJCAA national
football championship. With their second straight national crown, captured in a second consecutive trip to the
Mississippi Bowl in Biloxi, the Lions also went undefeated for the third time in the last four seasons. EMCC
captured 44 victories in its last 46 games and entered the 2015 season with 24 consecutive wins.
No. 1 ranked EMCC captured its fourth MACJC state championship with a 54-15 victory at Copiah-Lincoln
last November, then topped No. 2 ranked Iowa Western 34-17 in the Mississippi Bowl for the national title.
How do you honor a man who has made it
his mission to increase the availability of
higher education for everyone in a 100-mile radius?
You help him do his work.
Beth and John Clay of Meridian graduated
from EMCC in the 60s, but they’ve been fans
of recently retired EMCC President Dr. Rick
Young for years.
As a thank-you to Dr. Young for his service,
the couple established and donated $15,000
to the Rick Young Endowed Scholarship this
year.
“Dr. Young is a visionary who understands
the value of education,” said Beth, who is now
an attorney with The Clay Firm in Jackson.
“He’s been a master at utilizing effective
communication to promote our school. And
under his leadership, EMCC has risen from a
very small, little-known community college to
Dr. Young’s kind of gift
be an institution that is highly regarded in the
academic community, both locally and nationally.”
Beth, who served in student government
and was a cheerleader during her time at
EMCC, said she and John, who is an oncologist
in Meridian, have nothing but positive memories
from their years on the Scooba campus.
She hopes their gift will allow a deserving
student to create his or her own fond memories
at EMCC while furthering Dr. Young’s work.
“My husband and I are thrilled to establish
this endowment in Dr. Young’s honor. No individual
in Mississippi has worked harder than
Dr. Young to increase accessibility to a community
college education,” said Beth.
Donations to the Rick Young Endowed
Scholarship can be made through the EMCC
Development Foundation.
The New School: Golden Triangle ECHS opens
Mississippi’s first early college high school
began its first year on EMCC’s Golden Triangle
campus in August.
Golden Triangle Early College High
School, or G-Techs for short, offers students the
chance to earn college credits through EMCC
while they complete high school. Students will
have the chance to graduate with both their high
school diploma and an associate’s degree
(which amounts two years of free college) or a
career-technical certificate.
GTECHS principal Jill Savely said students
have already begun working toward their college
credits, even on the first day of class:
“They began taking their first college course the
minute they stepped on campus.”
The first class of 61 freshmen began this semester.
A new class of students will enter
GTECHS each year until all four classes are
full.
The school’s opening convocation was attended
by Dr. Carey Wright, Mississippi state
superintendent of education, and a delegation
from BankFirst branches around the Golden
Triangle, which presented GTECHS with a
$20,000 donation.
Beth and John Clay founded the Rick Young Endowed
Scholarship in honor of recently retired EMCC
A Fiing Memorial: Scholarship established to honor Hull
Late EMCC economics and government instructor
Lucy Hull in class on the Scooba campus in 2010.
The Lucy Hull Memorial Scholarship has been established
in her honor.
You know a teacher made an impact on
education when multiple people independently
decide she deserves a memorial scholarship
in her name.
Beloved Scooba campus economics and
government instructor Lucy Hull passed away
in February after battling cancer. Her husband
Dewayne and her co-workers on the Scooba
campus began collecting donations on their
own for memorial scholarships in her honor.
Then they got together and found out they all
had the same idea. So they combined their
donations and now the Lucy Hull Memorial
Scholarship endowment is up to nearly
$30,000.
“Lucy taught at EMCC for about 25 years.
She really loved EMCC. But the main thing
she loved was the students,” said Dwayne.
Only sophomores will be eligible so instructors
can weigh in on the student’s work
ethic.
EMCC English instructor Janet Briggs,
who worked with Lucy as advisors for the
Scooba campus Phi Theta Kappa honor society,
said students were not the only individuals
at EMCC to be touched by Lucy.
“I was very blessed when first arriving at
EMCC to be teamed as a PTK advisor with
Lucy. Words cannot explain the impact that
she made on me both as an advisor and a
person. Hopefully, this scholarship will help to
bring honor to the relationships that she had
with her students and EMCC,” said Briggs.
Dewayne adds that Lucy would have truly
been in her element this year and next as
presidential campaigns are playing out.
“Right now she would be having a ball.
She didn’t promote any candidate or party,
but she got students to express their views
and make sure they were civic-minded in their
thinking,” Dewayne said.
“She wanted students to be responsible
to their community.”
Donations to the Lucy Hull Memorial
Scholarship can be made through the EMCC
Development Foundation.
THE YOUNG ALUMNI REPORT
Fellow alumni and friends,
At this exciting time in the history of East Mississippi
Community College, the Alumni Association is
working to enhance the involvement of young alumni
and friends by developing a Young Alumni group.
Each of us had a different but equally impactful
experience at EMCC, and we want every person to
have the opportunity to continue their relationship with
the college and give back in a way that fits into the demanding
schedules of recent graduates, young alumni
and friends.
We are focused on finding ways to help alumni reconnect
with campus and to unite in a way that ensures
the future success of EMCC, and we would like to hear
your suggestions and ideas as we move the organization
forward.
As young alumni, you are encouraged to consider
the opportunities to support the efforts of our beloved
college through participation in Alumni Association
events, mentorship of current students, recruitment of
prospective students or through financial contributions
that assist deserving scholars. Your commitment of any
kind could make a monumental impact on the life of a
student.
Thank you for your continued support of EMCC.
Keys to the Kingdom
Former Board of Trustees Chairman
Dennis Morgan introduces Dr. Rick
Young during the dedication ceremony
for the F.R. Young Student Union
Retiring President Dr. Rick Young leaves EMCC in capable hands of Dr. Thomas Huebner
East Mississippi Community
College has produced more than its
fair share of champions. And not
just in sports.
Football coach Robert “Bull”
Sullivan was the first, garnering
national attention and a Sports Illustrated
cover story for turning
out All-Americans in the woods of
Kemper County, and inspiring a
generation of students and athletes
who support the school to this day
in his honor.
Dr. Tommy Davis is credited
with literally saving EMCC.
Pulling the school back from the
cliff of pending closure in the
1990s with some very tough love.
Dr. Raj Shaunak assembled the
best Workforce Services team in
the state at the Golden Triangle
campus, helping to lure billions of
dollars in industrial development
and thousands of jobs to EMCC’s
district, racking up national media
exposure along the way.
Buddy Stephens coached the
football team to its first state and
national titles. Then he did it again.
And then he did it again.
And then there’s Dr. Rick
New EMCC President Dr. Thomas Huebner talks to employees during the
school’s convocation services in August.
Young. The man who wasn’t interested
in being the best in the state.
Or the best in the region. The man
who relentlessly pursued the title
of “best in the nation.”
The Perfect Job
Dr. Thomas Huebner didn’t
know he wanted to be president of
EMCC until he was halfway to
being president of EMCC.
In early 2015, Dr. Huebner was
focused on returning to the presidency
of an Alabama community
college. He had just served a
stretch as interim president at
Bevill State Community College in
Jasper, where he hoped to see the
“interim” title lifted. But politics
intervened.
He returned to a dean of students
position at his previous
home, Shelton State Community
College in Tuscaloosa, where former
EMCC Scooba campus vice
president Dr. Andrea Mayfield had
recently been named president.
Then, in January, Dr. Young
announced he would retire at the
end of the school year.
“Andrea said, ‘Listen, your
personality will fit in perfect there.
They’ll love you and you’ll love
them,’” Dr. Huebner remembers.
He saw a certain logic in applying
for the spot. His wife,
Mindy, was from Wayne County.
He had earned his doctorate at the
University of Southern Mississippi
and worked as a speech and debate
instructor at William Carey University
in Hattiesburg early in his
Dr. Tom Huebner, left, took
over as the new president of
EMCC in July 2015 after Dr.
Rick Young retired. Above, Dr.
Huebner meets with members
of EMCC’s senior staff; while
at right, Dr. Young poses with
a pair of NJCAA national football
career. He saw Mississippi as a second home.
But he didn’t allow himself to get too invested.
“I submitted my stuff honestly not expecting
to make the cut,” said Dr. Huebner. “I told
my wife, if this is where I’m supposed to be,
then it will be.”
Then EMCC’s search committee narrowed
the field of applicants and Dr. Huebner received
a request to submit a video message on DVD
explaining why he should lead EMCC.
That’s when he got invested: “I spent 16 hours
working on that crazy video.”
Newly focused on where he could take
EMCC, Dr. Huebner realized it was a dream
job.
“The school had a great reputation among
my colleagues for the quality of instruction.
Obviously, it was well-known for the quality of
its athletic programs. And I was particularly impressed
by the Workforce Development program
at the GT campus and EMCC’s vision for
the ‘Communiversity.’ Where I’ve worked in
the past, we could only dream about the opportunity
to build a facility with that kind of vision
and scope.”
The Architect
At his tree farm in the Ticky Bend community
in Webster County, Dr. Young has gotten
some mowing done in his first couple months
of retirement, but he still has a list of chores he
hasn’t even started yet. First things first, and
he’s caring for aging family members before he
gets back to his plans. But there’s no doubt
he’ll accomplish every task on his list. Accomplishing
goals is his nature.
During his 11 years as president of EMCC,
Dr. Young’s single-minded determination to
mold the school into a national power saw an
unprecedented acceleration in infrastructure, instruction
and athletics. His vision to make
higher education available for as many people
as possible, whether to put them to work or see
them on to a four-year school, was only half of
the plan. The other half was to make them
proud of where they took their classes.
“We’ve made a lot of progress. It’s about
taking things to the people. Making training
and educational opportunities available and
convenient,” he said.
He singled out the immense impact of the
Workforce Services Division among the advancements
to which he’s most proud to have
contributed. Also on that list are more recent
ventures like Golden Triangle Early College
High School and EMCC’s recently launched
radio station, WGTC 92.7 FM. Growing the
marching band was also one of Dr. Young’s priorities,
as was the acquisition and launch of
Lion Hills in Columbus.
The list of improvements bearing Dr.
Young’s fingerprints is deep and broad. There
are buildings – Sullivan-Windham Field, the
F.R. Young Student Union, the Golden Triangle
Student Union, the Chapel in the Pines, the Orr
Center for Christian Activity, the rodeo barn,
the original Center for Manufacturing Technology
Excellence, and the planned Communiversity.
There are satellite campuses, West
Point-Clay County Center, Lion Hills. There’s
athletic achievement – three NJCAA national
football titles, four MACJC state football titles.
And there are instructional programs, among
them the return of associate degree nursing and
the honors program.
Of course, Dr. Young didn’t do these things
all by himself. But he assembled the right
teams and supported their efforts.
“That’s the thing I miss the most, the people.
My team members. My interaction with
people both within the college and the community,”
he said.
He’ll get a chance to see those people when
he returns to the Scooba campus Sept. 26 for
Homecoming, when he’ll be presented with
both the Distinguished Service Award and the
Alumnus of the Year Award.
“A lot of people don’t know, but I took a
few management night courses under the late
Ben Murphy during my time as an instructor at
the Golden Triangle campus back in the 80s. I
also took a lot of continuing education classes
like real estate, and I got both my open-water
scuba diving certification and took advanced
diving classes back when we partnered with
Mississippi University for Women to use their
pool.”
Dr. Young’s dedication to his own education
mirrors his philosophy about EMCC’s need to
continue growing and innovating.
“We have to maintain our willingness to
embrace what’s next and take on new endeavors.
And I think we’ve created a solid platform
for Dr. Huebner to do that. I’m very pleased
he’s taken the projects we’ve started to the next
level and I look forward to seeing what he has
in store for his own ideas.”
The Next Episode
Before Dr. Huebner rolls out any ideas of
his own, he’s gathering every available shred of
information and input.
“I just want to listen. There’s so much I
have to learn. My schedule is still booked full
and I’m talking to people from all parts of the
campus and community,” he said.
Being a veteran of community colleges, Dr.
Huebner has a missionary zeal for the work of
schools like EMCC. One that could make his
the next name on an impressive list of EMCC’s
champions.
“We’re not just another opportunity for a
kid to go to school or for someone to be retrained.
We’re literally in the life changing
business in a way that no one else is,” Dr.
Huebner said. “I tell my friends at four-year
schools, if you believe education can change
someone’s life, then why would you want to be
anywhere other than right here on the front
line?”
The ‘Art of Winning’
Lions aempting to perfect system which has produced three titles in 4 years
By Paul Jones
Creating a championship program,
it takes time to build a solid
foundation in order to sustain success.
That’s been the blueprint for
East Mississippi Community College’s
football program under the
direction of eighth-year head
coach Buddy Stephens.
The 2014 campaign produced
yet another perfect season that
ended with a 34-17 win over Iowa
Western in the NJCAA national
championship game at the Mississippi
Bowl in Biloxi and generated
the program’s third national championship
in the past four years.
During the Stephens era, the Lions
have posted a combined 68-10
mark as the nation’s second-winningest
football program (behind
Butler CC) dating back to the 2008
campaign. With EMCC’s 2013
and 2014 national titles ranking as
the first back-to-back NJCAA national
championships for a Mississippi
junior college program, a
third consecutive national title this
year would put the Lions in a
league of their own as far as the
all-time football history of the
NJCAA.
The key to the Lions’ ongoing
gridiron dynasty is taking things
one step at a time, according to the
NJCAA’s No. 1 active football
coach in terms of highest career
winning percentage (87.2%).
Under Stephens, East Mississippi
has also claimed four MACJC
State/NJCAA Region 23 titles and
six MACJC North Division regular-season
crowns.
“We’ve pretty much set the bar
where we want to be,” said
Stephens. “Our guys have done a
really good job of understanding
we can’t get it all done at one time.
We can’t score 100 points on one
drive and we can’t shut out a team
on just one series. And you can’t
win the championship in just one
week.
“Our guys understand it is one
play at a time. Last season like
FOOTBALL
Wide receiver Allenzae Staggers, seen climbing the ladder for a catch in a
Homecoming win over Jones County Junior College last year, is back for his
sophomore season in Scooba this fall.
every season, we wanted to be 1-0
each week. That mindset has stuck
each year and that makes it satisfying
for a lot of different reasons.
The success we’ve had and the
support we get makes it very gratifying
for our staff.”
That success and support goes
way beyond the football field, too.
It carries over to the classroom and
beyond the players and their time
in Scooba. It has also been a
process aided by the avid support
of the East Mississippi administration.
“For us, it starts with the administration,”
Stephens said. “It is
important to them and when the
time comes, they are always there
for us making sure our kids get a
good education. The administration
wants the kids to graduate and
do well academically, athletically
and spiritually.
“All of that translates into a
great experience for our players
and it makes it easier for our staff
to recruit more kids to play here.
With the education here and the
opportunity to win championships,
it is a formula for success.”
Sending players to the next
level and beyond also puts a smile
on Stephens’ face. A total of 27
players have moved on to fouryear
universities from EMCC’s
2014 squad. With a total of 23
NJCAA All-Americans during the
Stephens era, the Lions have had
an All-America quarterback each
year since 2008, including Ole
Miss signee Chad Kelly, who is
bidding to replace fellow EMCC
standout Bo Wallace in Oxford, as
well as former Lion signal-callers
Jaquez Johnson and Dontreal
Pruitt playing at Florida Atlantic
and Troy, respectively.
East Mississippi also continues
to load NCAA rosters with defensive
talent, such as the University
of Alabama tandem of Jarran Reed
and D.J. Pettway along with former
EMCC defensive backs A.J.
Stamps and Byerson Cockrell at
Kentucky and Nebraska, respectively.
Stephens’ former talent can
also be seen on display on Sundays,
as defensive lineman Quinton
Dial is in his third year with
the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and
former Kentucky standout passrusher
Za’Darius Smith was selected
in this year’s NFL Draft by
the Baltimore Ravens. On offense,
wide receiver Lance Lewis continues
to challenge for an NFL roster
spot while fellow pass-catcher Lacoltan
Bester has spent time on
NFL and AFL rosters.
Looking to reload for the upcoming
season, the 2015 Lions can
accomplish even more history.
Riding a 24-game winning streak
SPORTS
on the heels of successive 12-0 campaigns, the
Lions are just three wins shy of setting a new
all-time NJCAA record for most consecutive
victories.
“The good thing about junior college football
is that you always have a new set of guys
and half of your team coming in,” Stephens
noted. “At first guys come here thinking they
will win but don’t fully understand the work
that goes behind winning. So, it is our job as
coaches to drive that point home.”
Offensively, the Lions will have several
candidates to fill in the missing pieces off last
year’s roster. At quarterback, that includes
sophomore Wyatt Roberts along with Florida
State transfer John Franklin III.
At the skill positions, the Lions expect to
rely on the likes of receivers Allenzae Staggers,
Dario Robinson, Corey Davis and Desmond
Goss along with Florida State transfer Isaiah
Jones. The Lions also bring back talented running
back D.J. Law, who will run behind an offensive
line anchored by returnees James Davis,
Ethan Orr and Reid Kellems, among others.
“We return a lot of skill guys and we feel
our quarterback depth is very good,” Stephens
said. “All of the quarterbacks bring something
different to the table and they all bring great
leadership. We have a good group of offensive
linemen back and they just have to set the tone
physically and mentally.”
With the valuable tutelage of veteran offensive
coordinator Marcus Wood, the Lions have
garnered many headlines with their explosive
offensive attack consistently ranking among the
NJCAA’s annual team statistical leaders.
At top: EMCC coaches and staffers were on hand
with head football coach Buddy Stephens when he
accepted an award from the American Football
Coaches Association. Above: Dual-threat D.J. Law
is expecting a big season as the Lions’ top returning
rusher and kick returner from a year ago.
East Mississippi’s dominant defense has
also proven its worth. In 2014, the Lions produced
five consecutive shutouts and did not
surrender a rushing touchdown during the ninegame
regular season. That has become the
norm under Jordan Lesley, who is entering his
third season as the Lions’ defensive coordinator.
“Ever since Jordan Lesley came on, we’ve
had 10 shutouts,” Stephens acknowledged.
“Jordan and his defensive staff put together a
great scheme and do such a good job of working
well together. All of our defensive coaches
are on the same page and it shows on the field.”
Sophomore defensive linemen DeShawn
Tillman, Ronald Ollie and Caleb Grant return,
while sophomore Jalen Boney is the lone starter
back in the secondary. With ample talent on the
defensive side of the ball and impact freshmen
ready for action, EMCC’s defensive mix could
prove dominant once again.
“We’ve got players back at every position,”
Stephens said. “I believe we will be really
good on defense again and they all run well
from top to bottom. And that’s a dangerous
thing when those guys like to hit people.”
The expectations remain unchanged for the
Lions this fall. It’s been that steady building
process that has put East Mississippi at the
forefront of junior college football this decade.
Competing for championships and now winning
championships at every level is the annual
goal for the Lions and 2015 will certainly be no
different.
“It used to be what we had to do to win a
state championship,” Stephens recalled. “So,
we’ve set the bar to where it is now and people
ask what we have to do to win a national championship.
For us to win a championship,
whether it’s the division, state or national
championship, we have to be healthy and be
smart on and off the field. We have to protect
the ball and play relentless on defense and be
really committed to special teams. Those are
always our goals and we want to reach that bar
again.”
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Begley returns to lead Lions
By Paul Jones
Above: At left, La’Datren Deas returns to EMCC after averaging 10.5 points per game as a freshman; while Jahyde Gardiner
(right) is back after putting up 13.7 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds per game. Below: New head coach Billy
Begley is welcomed by athletic director Mickey Stokes during a press conference announcing his hiring.
The 2015-16 basketball season
will ring in a new era at East Mississippi
Community College. But,
it will be a very familiar face directing
the Lions on the court this
coming season.
After producing an impressive
eight-year composite record of
161-66 that included four straight
trips to the NJCAA Division I National
Tournament, former EMCC
head coach Mark White took the
same position at Tallahassee Community
College this past spring.
Enter Billy Begley, a former assistant
coach under White’s guidance
who is very familiar with the East
Mississippi program and the
Scooba campus.
“It is a great opportunity,” said
Begley, who had been an assistant
at Troy University the past two
seasons since leaving EMCC following
the 2012-13 campaign.
“When I left here, I always saw
myself coming back here if Coach
White ever left. It is something I
wanted and welcomed. It is a phenomenal
opportunity because of
the tradition built here at East Mississippi.”
Begley also added the rare opportunity
to coach at a program
without that “new” feel.
“I am very familiar with the
program and know how things
work here,” Begley stressed.
“That helps so much from my
standpoint.”
With a primary goal of returning
to the national tournament in
Hutchinson, Kansas, for the first
time since Begley’s last season as
an EMCC assistant, the Lions’
first-year head man returns six
players who combined for 88 total
starts as freshmen, as well as two
others who sat out a year ago with
the program.
“We have eight players returning
from last year’s team, and
that’s huge for our program,” Begley
noted. “We have a very good
nucleus back with guys who
played a lot as freshmen. Those are
the guys we will depend on for
leadership roles in taking ownership
of this team.”
Along with returning three of
their top four scorers (Jahyde Gardiner,
Daniel Simmons and La’Datren
Deas) from last year’s 18-8
squad, the Lions also welcome
back the team’s top two rebounders
(Gardiner and Simmons) and
two leading playmakers (J’Vaughnte
Harris and Deas). Also back in
the mix are Juan Davis Jr. and Jontavius
Baker.
Equally as important is thirdyear
assistant coach Drew Bernd,
who was retained by Begley when
he assumed EMCC’s coaching
reins. Joining Begley and Bernd
on the Lions’ bench will be noted
AAU coach and respected recruiter
Pete Story.
“I’ve known Drew for a long
time as a person, but what I’ve
seen from Drew as a recruiter has
been impressive,” Begley said.
“He is a tireless worker and really
helped to keep this program stable
in recruiting during the transition
of coaches.
“And I have known Pete as
well from my days at Mississippi
State. He is a relentless recruiter
with high character who has contacts
all over the country. Pete will
also be very beneficial to our program.”
Another part of the program
that will remain consistent is the
identity of the team, which will always
start on the defensive end of
the floor, according to EMCC’s
rookie hoops mentor.
“Our identity will be on the defensive
end,” Begley emphasized.
“Defense is why we were successful
when I was an assistant coach
here and why we had one of the
best defensive teams in the country.
If we can defend and rebound,
we will be in position to win every
single night.”
As Begley prepares for his first
head coaching job, his philosophy
on both ends of the floor will not
be complicated. He wants to take
all that he’s learned in previous
coaching stops and allow his players
to have freedom on the court.
“We want our guys to have
freedom to play their game to their
strengths,” Begley added. “Developing
our guys is something I
strongly believe in. If you have
guys with skills and develop them,
it makes our team a hard team to
prepare for.”
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomores to carry Lady Lions
By Paul Jones
Above: Coach Sharon Thompson (left) is back for her 15th season in Scooba and 11th as the Lady Lions’ head coach.
She will welcome back a solid backcourt, including former high school All-American Ki-Ki Patterson (right).
As the 2015-16 basketball season
approaches, veteran East Mississippi
Community College
women’s basketball coach Sharon
Thompson is comforted by the fact
that she can head into the upcoming
campaign with some familiar
faces.
Unlike a season ago when she
and the new-look Lady Lions
forged through a break-even 12-12
campaign with an entirely new
roster, this year’s EMCC women’s
squad features five returning players
who totaled 54 starts as collegiate
freshmen. Beginning her
11th season as a head coach and
15th year overall on the Scooba
campus, Thompson knows all too
well the yearly challenges associated
with recruiting and coaching
at the two-year college level.
“When you look at last season,
we had to rely on a lot of freshmen,”
Thompson recalled. “Our
sophomore group last year was
made up of a lot of transfers who
didn’t quite step up like we needed
them to.
“A tough part of junior college
is players often times having to
move on from your program just
as they are getting adjusted to your
system.”
Thompson’s preseason comfort
level is noticeably high with the
return of the team’s two leading
scorers from a year ago in former
Mississippi State transfer Ki-Ki
Patterson and Camry Jones. Patterson,
a former PARADE All-
American at Columbus High
School, averaged 14.0 points and
3.3 rebounds to earn first-team allstate
honors as a collegiate rookie.
Jones started 15 consecutive
games as a mid-year transfer and
made an immediate impact by averaging
just under 10 points and
4.5 rebounds per contest.
Along with Patterson and
Jones returning in the backcourt,
the Lady Lions also bring back fellow
guards Bre Jernigan, Cambrielle
Campbell and T.J. Harper.
Jernigan and Campbell topped last
year’s squad with 67 and 44 assists,
respectively.
“All five of our returning players
are guards and there is nothing
like having experience returning in
the backcourt,” Thompson noted.
“I think our roster is faster and we
can get up and down the floor
much better than last year. Though
we will be inexperienced in the
post, I think we’ll be able to score
more in transition.”
Included among EMCC’s newcomer
class is transfer Tianna Germain
from Kennesaw State in
Georgia and Florida native Chenya
Sealey of Georgetown University.
“Tianna will bring a lot of
toughness to the backcourt,”
Thompson said. “It is hard to find
toughness and you can’t teach it.”
Expected to headline the incoming
group of newcomers from
the prep ranks is East Webster
High School post player Quantesha
Patterson, who scored 39
points and collected 12 rebounds
as the championship game MVP in
leading the Lady Wolverines to
last year’s Class 2A state title.
Thompson also praises the
prospects of another other local
post product in La'Quesha
Clemons of West Lowndes.
“Quantesha can run the floor
well and has a good wing span,”
said Thompson. “La’Quesha is
similar in the way she can get up
and down the floor.”
Thompson and third-year assistant
coach Michael Morgan
have also signed Forest’s Kimmaira
Jackson and Anissia May of
Jim Hill High School in Jackson.
Having surrounded a solid
corps of returning players with dependable
newcomers, the Lady
Lions seem to have the necessary
ingredients in place to get the program
back to the level of play
when the EMCC women claimed
three MACJC North Division titles
during a recent six-year span.
“We have to make sure our
sophomores take the freshmen
under their wings,” Thompson
stressed. “I have confidence they
will do that because they know
what is expected here and they are
good leaders with high character.
We expect a lot out of our returning
players and I believe they will
get us back to where we want to
be.”
BASEBALL
Lions look to continue momentum
By Paul Jones
The 2015 season saw the resurgent
East Mississippi Community
College baseball program take another
step forward. Under the direction
of sixth-year head coach
Chris Rose, the Lions plan to continue
that surge and maintain their
place among the nation’s top programs
within the NJCAA Division
II ranks.
While having combined for a
61-31 record the past two seasons,
including a 2014 MACJC North
Division title and last year’s runner-up
finish in the regular-season
MACJC standings, the EMCC
Lions have also had former standouts
LeDarious Clark (Texas
Rangers) and Chase Nyman (Seattle
Mariners) selected in the Major
League Baseball Draft the past two
years.
Among those standout players
returning from last year’s 29-18
ballclub include slugger David Pimentel
and speedster JoVaughn
McNabb.
Pimentel, an all-region first
baseman, ranked among the
NJCAA leaders a season ago with
14 home runs and 61 runs batted in
while hitting .355. McNabb, from
Hattiesburg, hit .375 as the team’s
rookie centerfielder while leading
EMCC in hits (66), runs scored
(49) and stolen bases (17).
Along with returning starters
Emil Ellis (.320), Chris McCullough
(.315, 6 HRs) and Corley
Reynolds (.285), the Lions also
welcome back former New Hope
High School teammates JC Redden
and Taylor Stafford. Stafford,
who transferred from Mississippi
State, batted a team-leading .392
as a collegiate freshman for the
Lions along with making seven
mound appearances. Redden was
3-2 on the hill as a freshman and
will be joined by returning hurlers
Layton Dill (4-1), Jay Booth (4
saves) and Ryder Davis.
“Last year was one of the best
defensive clubs we’ve had and our
bullpen was good all year long,”
Rose said. “And with the exception
of the regional tournament, we
Above: EMCC celebrates while coming off the field during one of its 29 victories in the 2015 season.
Below: Slugger David Pimentel was an All-NJCAA Region 23 selection as a freshman and is back for 2016.
swung the bats well.”
The Lions will have some
holes to fill on the mound with the
loss of two-year starting pitchers
J’Daylin Jackson and Andrew
Crane (Troy signee) along with
closer Ryan Rigby having signed
with Mississippi State. EMCC
will also need to reload up the
middle with the departure of
steady catcher Dylan Vuncannon
(Memphis signee) and minus the
solid infield tandem of Kyle Liberto
(Southern University) and
Drew Standland (William Carey
University).
“When you look at the guys returning,
we have several guys who
were very productive last year,”
said Rose. “We have vocal leaders
back and all of those guys know
where we’ve set the bar and know
what the standard is and what
needs to happen to take another
step forward.
“We did lose some pitchers,
but I believe our pitching staff will
be as deep as we’ve ever been.
With the guys coming in, we have
some pitchers that are swing-andmiss
guys and high-velocity guys.
Those are the kind of arms you
need to make a run in postseason.”
Integral to EMCC’s recent success
on the diamond, pitching coach
Anthony Izzio returns for his second
season on Rose’s knowledgeable
staff, as does fellow
University of South Alabama product
Graham Odom, who has been
elevated to full-time status after
serving as a graduate assistant for
EMCC last season.
With athletic excellence at a
premium on the Scooba campus,
the EMCC baseball program is
proud to be a part of that high standard.
In averaging 30 wins over
the past two years and garnering
No. 18 final national rankings both
seasons, the Lions’ NJCAA Region
23 Tournament appearance this
past spring was their first in more
than a decade, while the 2014 ballclub
was the school’s winningest
baseball team (32-13) since 1990
and earned the program’s first division
title since 1998.
“We knew the expectation
level within the athletic department
when we first got here,”
Rose recalled. “We knew it would
be challenging, but there’s been
good progress. The guys that have
played here before are selling East
Mississippi in a positive way. We
are putting a better product on the
field every year, and kids want to
be part of that.”
SOFTBALL
Lady Lions looking to regroup
By Paul Jones
Above: Head coach Kyndall White is entering her fourth year at EMCC and will welcome back a nucleus of players
which includes Heather Abney (seen below). The Lady Lions hope for a return to the postseason in 2016.
With a balanced mix of freshmen
and sophomores on this year’s
talented roster, the East Mississippi
Community College softball
team seeks to return to postseason
play in 2016 following a year’s absence
from the playoffs.
The Lady Lions had reached
the MACJC state playoffs during
six consecutive seasons before
missing out on the postseason last
year. Fourth-year head coach
Kyndall White noted of that disappointment
and the factors that will
help EMCC get back on track.
“I think the biggest thing last
year is we just couldn’t put it all
together on the field,” White recalled
from last year’s 15-19 campaign.
“We had a lot of chemistry
and it was one of the most talented
teams we’ve had at East Mississippi.
But we just couldn’t get all
of the aspects of the game working
at once.
“We started off hot when we
swept East Central (NJCAA national
runnerup) at our place. It’s
always a long season and we just
didn’t end up where we wanted to
be. We will have to come together
and make it all work again, and I
know the girls are striving for
that.”
The Lady Lions will look to replace
four position starters and
three pitchers from their 2015
squad, including former New
Hope High School teammates
Anna McCrary and Kasey Stanfield,
Clarkdale product Kristen
Mitchell and New Orleans native
Pepper Baker.
Despite the losses, White is
confident in the players returning
this season and expects a good
mixture of veterans and newcomers
to lead the way.
“We have a good sophomore
class back this year,” said White,
whose 2015 squad earned NJCAA
All-Academic Team laurels for the
sixth straight year, including backto-back
NJCAA Softball Academic
Team of the Year honors in 2013
and 2014. “We have many sophomores
that played a lot as freshmen.
We also have two pitchers
coming back for us with Valiree
Blair and Chandler Ellis, so that is
huge for us. We have a good
group of sophomores that are competitive,
who want to win and have
a bitter taste in their mouths due to
last season.”
Expected to lead the charge
this coming season for the Lady
Lions will be returning position
players Marissa Landrum and
Emily Patrick along with sisters
Amandalyn and Heather Abney.
In addition to the team’s 12 returning
players, EMCC will also welcome
a dozen newcomers to the
fold next year, including Mallory
Vance of West Lauderdale and
Union’s Averi Pender.
Also new to the program as a
game-changing addition, White
welcomes the arrival of former
Mississippi State/Georgia standout
and current professional pitcher
Alison Owen to the staff.
“I felt like our program lacked
a solid pitching coach and with so
many pitchers this year, we needed
to give them a coach that can
spend more time coaching them,”
White stressed. Adding Alison to
our staff is extremely beneficial for
our program in so many ways.”
Change will also be felt around
the state this season, as the 2016
MACJC schedule will feature a
new challenge for all 15 members
of the competitive league. Straying
from the typical North-South
divisional format, every MACJC
member will now play one doubleheader
with each school to comprise
a 28-game conference
schedule.
“I think it is great and something
that needed to happen for the
state to become even more competitive,”
White admitted. “After
all, since everyone can recruit
state-wide then it makes sense to
open up the schedule where everyone
plays everyone.”
With a new-look team and a
challenging schedule ahead, White
remains confident that her team’s
enhanced desire to win and
EMCC’s tradition of excelling will
pay dividends in 2016.
“Our strengths will be our experience
and having girls who
have played more competitive ball
and are used to winning,” White
noted. “A lot of our freshmen
have played in the playoffs and
have won state championships.
We will be young in a couple of
areas, but our sophomores should
do a good job of leading those
freshmen.”
RODEO
Program continues to make strides
By Paul Jones
East Mississippi Community
College’s rodeo program continues
to make steady strides under sixthyear
head coach Morgan Goodrich.
EMCC took another step forward
during the 2014-15 rodeo campaign
with a school-best national
finish by the men’s team and a pair
of program-first regional event titles
on the women’s side.
Having now been represented
in the prestigious College National
Finals Rodeo during each of the
five seasons of the program’s existence,
the EMCC men placed a
school-record 25th nationally this
past June by virtue of Winston
Cheek’s sixth-place showing in the
bull riding championship round.
Fellow East Mississippi cowboy
Justin Reeves also competed in the
bull riding competition at this
year’s CNFR in Casper, Wyoming.
The EMCC women made
school history themselves this past
season by claiming program-first
team titles during the fall-opening
Missouri Valley College rodeo and
the spring-opening Cossatot Community
College event of the National
Intercollegiate Rodeo
Association’s Ozark Region slate.
Individually, East Mississippi cowgirl
Kelsey Kennemer qualified for
the 2015 CNFR in the barrel racing
and team roping events after
earning all-around women’s reserve
champion honors in the
NIRA’s Ozark Region.
“We did really well last year,”
Goodrich said. “Winston drew
some good bulls in the national finals
and ended up doing really
well there. We were very proud of
Winston because he had to sit out
last year to get eligible. To see
him go out like that in his last year
was a great accomplishment.
Justin Reeves also had a good finish
in the Ozark Region to qualify
for nationals in bull riding.
“I also thought there were
some girls who reached their potential
last year. It was great to see
Kelsey reach the College National
Finals Rodeo and be named allaround
reserve champion cowgirl
Above: Katelyn Nicholson finishes off her round in a goat-tying competition for EMCC during the 2014-15 campaign.
Below: EMCC’s Winston Cheek rides in the prestigios College National Finals Rodeo bull riding competition.
in the region.”
As East Mississippi continues
to make annual progress competing
mostly against four-year colleges
and universities within the
region, Goodrich looks to again
have a full roster of competitors
consisting of a mixed group of veterans,
newcomers and transfers for
the upcoming 2015-16 season.
The NIRA’s Ozark Region action
gets underway this fall with
five events and five more rodeos
scheduled for the spring.
“We always want to have
around 25 kids on the roster and
right now we have 20 guys and six
girls,” Goodrich said. “We have
13 kids returning so we will have
experience there. We also have
four transfers from other schools
and the rest will be freshmen.
“We will have five events in
the fall and five events in the
spring again. In the fall we will go
to Missouri Valley, West Alabama,
Murray (Ky.) State, Three Rivers
(Mo.) College and our last event is
at Southern Arkansas University.
We are still waiting to finalize the
spring schedule but we do expect
to host another event this year.”
Among those newcomers expected
to make an immediate impact
for EMCC will be Marcus
Theriot of Poplarville, who captured
all-around champion cowboy
honors during the 2014 National
High School Finals Rodeo in Rock
Springs, Wyoming. Coming from
great cowboy bloodlines, his father,
Herbert Theriot, was the 1994
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association
(PRCA) world champion
tie-down roper.
“I believe this coming season
we will be strong in every event,”
Goodrich predicted. “Marcus Theriot
really brings a lot to our program
and is an outstanding
competitor.
“ He competes in calf roping,
steer wrestling and team roping,
and his dad is also expected to help
with our team. Marcus was definitely
our No. 1 recruit, and our
team is stacked in a lot of events
this season. Blake Bell is a returning
bull rider who should also do
well for us.
“We have a lot of balance this
season and I really feel like this
could be our year.”
GOLF
Williams has memorable first year
By Paul Jones
Above: The EMCC golf team listens to first-year head coach Benji Williams during a 2015 tournament. Williams and the
Lions will bring back just one player from last season in Daniel Schroder (pictured below).
It would be hard to top Benji
Williams’ first season as the East
Mississippi Community College
men’s golf coach. During his initial
season at the helm of a golf
program at any level, Williams
succeeded in helping the Lions
maintain their high standards on
the links and continue the school’s
winning tradition of late.
For the fourth time in five seasons,
the Lions claimed runner-up
honors in the MACJC State Championship
this past spring. Williams
and his sophomore-laden squad
then followed with a third-place
finish in the NJCAA Region 23
Championship.
“It was as much fun as I
thought it would be,” recalled
Williams, who attended the highly
acclaimed College of Golf at
Keiser University in Port St. Lucie,
Fla. “I was very thankful for this
opportunity and even though I didn’t
have a long background in
coaching, it was something I always
wanted to do. I was able to
meet a lot of great coaches who
helped me through that first season
and I had a great group of kids that
(former EMCC) Coach (Dale)
Peay had recruited to play for East
Mississippi.”
Also a first last season, East
Mississippi hosted the MACJC
State Championship at its home
course at Lion Hills in Columbus.
Individually, the 2015 season also
produced a pair of MACJC second-team
all-state selections in
Steven Eilders and Hunter Harmon.
Eilders also advanced to the
NJCAA Division II Golf Championship,
giving the Lions a representative
in the national
tournament for the fifth time in the
last seven seasons.
“We started off shaky because
of the weather, but we came together
to finish second in the state
and third in the regional tournament,”
Williams noted. “It was a
close group of guys that always
hung out with each other even outside
of golf. That group came in
as freshmen and became our leaders
last year and really represented
this program well.”
Looking towards the 2015-16
season, the Lions will return just
one golfer in Daniel Schroder from
last year’s five-man squad.
Among those incoming freshmen
are local product Jace Hobart of
Starkville and Stringer’s Rhett
Walters.
“We have a large group of talented
freshmen coming in,”
Williams noted. “Rhett (Walters)
claimed some medalist honors last
season and Brek Balentine was a
high school teammate of Daniel’s
in Baton Rouge. Our success
lately has definitely helped us in
recruiting. We are always up there
in the top four teams in the state
and that is what guys look at during
the recruiting process.
“So, we will be young this season,
but our approach won’t be any
different. I set a high standard for
them and I expect them to do what
we need to do in practice. We will
be younger, but they are energetic
and ready to go. Plus, a lot of
these guys know each other already
so that always helps.”
The 2015-16 campaign will
also be different from previous
years from a scheduling standpoint.
This season, fall competition
will also count as official tournaments
along with the typical spring
schedule of events.
“We will continue to try to host
a tournament at Lion Hills every
year,” Williams said. Northeast
and Northwest will also host
events that will serve as previews
for our state and regional tournaments.”
And judging from his team’s
off-season practices, Williams is
confident about his youthful Lions’
chances this coming season and he
believes their collective work ethic
will be the driving force.
“From being around the guys,
a primary strength will be our
work ethic,” Williams noted. They
are always working on their craft
and always on the golf course. We
will have a team that has to grow
up quickly, but that work ethic will
help us achieve the success we expect
to reach.”
was voted Most Handsome at EMJC in 1969. He played football for legendary
EMCC coach “Bull” Sullivan and served in the Mississippi House of Representatives
from 1988-2000. He won a state senate seat in 2004, which he held
until his death. He was inducted into the EMCC Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Bill Buckner’s daughter, Wendy, speaks during the dedication of William “Bill”
Buckner Memorial Drive on the Scooba campus during Homecoming 2014.
Inset, Buckner as a player at EMJC in 1965. Buckner was a two-time All American
under coach Bull Sullivan and was later drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. He
coached at the high school and college level, including EMCC, before a long career
as state and regional director for the Federation of Christian Athletes.
Ikie Ethridge
Meridian – September 23, 2014
EMCC Sports Hall of Fame inductee Ikie Ethridge had
a long history with EMJC athletics.
It began in 1947 when the Martin School (Lauderdale
County) grad began playing
both basketball and baseball for
EMJC. He also served as student
body vice president during
his sophomore year.
Beginning his coaching career
in 1951, Ethridge began at
Martin, where his 1953 boys
basketball team competed for
the state title. His athletic career
continued during his time in the
Army, building a baseball field
for troops in Korea and playing
on the Rear 8th Army Championship
basketball team.
After serving as coach and
principal at Collinsville and West
Ikie
Ethridge
Lauderdale high schools, he returned to EMJC in 1964 as
academic dean/registrar and baseball coach. He coached
the 1965 team to a state championship and narrowly lost
the 1966 state title game.
Ethridge went on to serve as superintendent of education
for Lauderdale County schools and as a county supervisor
for 12 years. He is survived by his wife Terry, four
children and his grandchildren.
James “Shug” Henders
Aliceville, Ala. – October 19, 2014
Shug Henders served a tour of duty in Japan before
even graduating high school. But he eventually found his
way to EMJC on a football scholarship in 1950, where he
was promptly called away to
duty again, this time in Korea.
When finally able to play for
coach Bull Sullivan, Henders
was a two-way starter who
started every game during his
time at EMJC. He also played
baseball, was a member of the
Glee Club and voted a class favorite. He
continued to play at
Livingston University before
going to work at the Huyck Felt
Company in Dancy, Ala., and
later the JJ Ranch in Aliceville.
Henders was inducted into the
EMCC Sports Hall of Fame in
2005. He and his wife, Lelia, had
three children and four grandchildren.
James “Shug”
Bill Stovall
Phoenix, Ariz. – March 2, 2014
After football and track success at Greenville High
School, Bill Stovall traveled to Scooba to play for Bull Sullivan
in 1950, garnering All-State Honorable Mention.
Stovall served in the Marines for the next three years,
including playing for the All-Marine Championship team.
He was inducted into the EMCC Sports Hall of Fame in
2006.
He finished school at the University of Arizona, earning
a Master’s of Education, and went on to compete professionally
in bodybuilding. In 1982
he was the third runner-up in the
Mr. America Over-40 bodybuilding
contest. In 1983, he won the
Mr. Senior America contest.
After 37 years of teaching
high school biology and coaching
football and track, Stovall retired
to Phoenix with his wife
Sylvia. The couple had three
sons, one daughter and four
grandsons.
Before Bill’s passing, the
Stovalls served as religious volunteers
for the Maricopa County Juvenile
Detention Centers.
