The School
for Theatre Creators.
nationale Suprieure des Beaux-Arts)
слова “to play” и “to act’.

Paul University
в University of Illinois, Columbia College.
Columbia...
The School for Theatre
Fall/Winter 2015:
Pastel Colors
By: Diala Joseph, Fashion Blogger
Bold eye-catching prints and
colors stole the show this
spring and summer, but pastel
shades [like cotton candy,
marshmallow and macaroon]
will take your fall/winter trends to a
new level. Classic winter white and
creams shades emit soft hues that sweep
you away from the bustling city scene,
transporting you somewhere tranquil,
like perhaps the Hamptons or the North
Shore.
BLue LAGOOn
So whether it’s a lovely dress you’re
sporting, a cute top, casual pants or a
sexy skirt, lace details go well with any
pastel shade. These candy hues create
a delicate and feminine look, ideal for
your next ladies luncheon or casual, cozy
day at the office. Also, pastel colors and
textures allows you to mix and match
pieces already in your closet.
DR. IRV’S HeALTH TIPS
Cellulite:
Is there hope?
Cellulite is the term used to describe the dimpling of the skin most commonly
seen around the hips and thighs. It is more common in women than men,
and also more frequently seen in older, post-menopausal women. The
difference between the sexes is due to the makeup of the connective tissue
between the overlaying skin and the deep muscle fascia. In women, this
fascia has been shown to be more vertically oriented, thus creating closed
pockets that cause enlarged or excessive fat cells in order to “push out” the
overlaying adjacent skin, which leads to the puckering we call “cellulite”.
When cellulite is present, there is nothing abnormal about a person’s body
makeup, or their fat cells. Even a thin athletic body can have localized areas
of dimpling due to the connective tissue compartmentalizing the fat between
the skin and underlying muscle. The question is: What can be done?
DR. IRVIn WIeSMAn
holds over ten years’ perience and is certified
ex-
in three specialties: Plastic
& reconstructive surgery,
hand & micro-Vascular
surgery and general surgery.
a third generation surgeon, dr. irvin
wiesman is fascinated by the function of the
human body as well as its health and beauty.
he specializes in Plastic & reconstructive
surgery of the face, breast, and body,
and is devoted to attaining the best results
possible. he takes great care to guide his
patients throughout the surgical process,
focusing on their individual needs and cosmetic
goals. he is also a member of the esteemed
american board of Plastic surgery
and the highly selective american society of
aesthetic Plastic surgeons.
CReAMS
we have all seen ads in fashion magazines
and infomercials marketing a wonder
cream that can “dissolve” cellulite. most
of these creams contain a medicine called
theophylline. theophylline is a commonly
prescribed asthma medication that also
has a diuretic effect. there have been
many subjective reports of improved
body contour and cellulite, as well as a
decrease in waist and thigh circumference
with the use of theophylline, however, the
problem is there is no scientific evidence
supporting these individual claims. but the
good news is that are minimal side effects
from these kinds of products. there is
minimal systemic absorption of the cream,
in addition to the very low chance [25%] of
developing a rash.
MASSAGe
endermologie is a form of deep tissue
massage where a mechanical device is
used to essentially suction up folds of skin
and roll it two revolving rollers. it breaks
down fat and excretes it from the body,
leading to a corrected body contour
purified of irregularities and cellulite.
an analysis of bodily fluids proves these
claims to be unfounded, but there is an
increase in collagen above the muscle
fascia, which may lead to a smoothing
out of contour irregularities. however, this
is yet to proven with clear scientific data.
other things to consider with this form of
cellulite treatment is that it may take up to
14 treatments, which may be painful, and
is also on the more expensive side.
radio frequency (Javeshape tm , accent tm ,
thermage) utilizes radiofrequency to heat
up the skin and subcutaneous tissue to
create skin tightening and slight volume
reduction. this technology can create
a tighter, smoother and long-lasting
appearance of the skin, usually taking 1-3
treatments before achieving desired results.
SuRGICAL TReATMenT
surgical treatment is also a reasonable
and reliable option for treating the
underlying cause of cellulite. an
instrument called a pickle for, or loop
lysing cannula, can be used to disrupt
the facial attachment between the skin
and underlying musical fascia that causes
dimpling. this may need to be combined
with liposuction, or fat injection, to
improve any contour irregularity and
prevent reattachment of the fascia, thereby
providing an overall improvement in body
contour and appearance.
LASeR THeRAPY
Cellulaze is another invasive treatment that
utilizes laser (light) therapy to break up and
liquefy the fibrous bands of the fat packets.
the additional heat from the laser will also
improve the amount of skin tightening. in
this situation, it is wise to seek someone
experienced with laser treatments because
there is always the risk of causing
permanent burns to the skin.
Cellulite is a difficult, and often
misunderstood, problem affecting even
the most “fit” individuals. there is also
little scientific evidence behind the many
treatments currently advertised in media,
especially on tV and in magazines.
Fortunately, many of these treatments have
little to no side effects. surgical intervention
is an option, but only after thoughtful and
serious consideration.
overall, leading a healthy lifestyle by
getting adequate exercise, and maintaining
a balanced diet are the best ways for
people to achieve their own “ideal” body.
From the fur and ripped denim of the past,
to today’s contemporary color blocking trend,
don’t miss out on these styles.
Fall in Chicago can be fleeting. it
comes in between the small period of
time where the blistering heat finally
cools and the dangerously cold winter
hasn’t reached its peak points yet. so
for obvious reasons, it can be easy to
overlook. but even with the unreliable
weather, these trends are a must-have
for this season.
Color blocking
whether it’s pairing a bright top with
a different colored bottom or finding
prints that feature a juxtaposition of
colors, make sure you have these
items in your closet this fall.
Fur
Fur vests, shrugs, jackets, cuffs and
even booties were all over fashion
week this year, making it a staple
once the season allows it.
Thigh high boots
opt for thigh high boots this fall to
с синей
кожей
Blue Man Group
Briar Street Theater
Blue Man Group.
28

The New York Times”
Blue
Man Group
Blue Man Group
Astor
Place Theater
Obie Award (1990-1991 годы), Lucille
Lortel Award (1992
Drama Desk
“Complex Rock Tour”.
Be a Megastar Tour 2.0”.
Blue Man Group
Off Broadway
Alliance Awards.
Blue Man Productions”,
шоу Blue Man Group.
шоу Blue Man Group одновременно
Epic”.
Grant
Park Music Festival
Blue Man Group
(Chicago Youth Symphony
Orchestras).
Blue Man Group –
Briar Street
Theater,
представления Blue Man Group в
Marshall Fields.
Blue
Man Group
Blue Man
Group

Dancing
with the Stars.

Vika Petlakh is a twenty-year-old photographer
living in Los Angeles, California. Raised in a
Russian household in Chicago, she brings her
innovative and captivating style to the West
Coast, where she captures classic beauty through
a variety of models. Vika has been published
in Vogue Italy, Elegant Magazine, EDITORIAL
Magazine, and many more renowned publications.
She has worked with the cast of the hit TV show,
Chicago Fire for Felix Mag and has an array of
themed photo shoots all listed on her website. We
were able to sit down with the young talent to
discuss her background, her goals, and her roots.
34

Where are you from? Tell us about your Russian
roots
My whole family is from Minsk, Belarus – excluding
my younger brother who was the first to be born in
the USA. I moved to Chicago with my mom at the age
of 2 and basically grew up there.
When did you first pick up a camera and when
did you know that it was something you had a
knack for?
Ironically I started photographing on a trip to LA,
(where I live now) when I was with my family, visiting
for my cousins wedding about 7 years ago. My life
has always been immersed in the arts and for some
reason I felt the need to photograph my trip in LA with
my dad’s point-and-shoot camera; I think it may be
because of how pretty I thought everything looked.
It is clear that you worked hard for your success.
How did you go about making the connections
you made and getting yourself out
there?
Networking. Networking. Networking. I’m a naturally
friendly and outgoing person. My dad taught me
early on that 1000 friends will get you further than
1000 dollars. I took this to heart and focused on actually
making connections with people rather than just
trying to make money any way I could.
What were your original plans with photography
and how have they changed?
It was just a hobby... until people began responding
to my work and really taking me seriously as
a photographer. It really was surreal almost. I just
pushed buttons and played with light the way I liked.
This is still what I do, just with a little more method to
my madness.
As an artist, what is your ideal approach to
taking photos? Do you have a certain style you
like to maintain? …A certain image?
I’d like to think I have a certain style, but I’m still figuring
it out. My tastes and ideas change constantly, as I
get inspired by each shoot individually.
You’re living in LA now, right? What was the
transition from Chicago to LA like?
It’s been terrifying and so far the most rewarding year
of my life. I had never lived out of my parents home
before, let alone on the other side of the country
whilst supporting myself financially.
What are your future goals with your career?
Just to continue creating work that people will respond
to, as well as being able to travel constantly.
Do you feel as if growing up Russian impacted
your success? Influenced you at all?
I would certainly think that growing up in a very
Russian household has affected me and instilled
strong values and habits that have shaped me into a
hardworking, self reliant individual. I can’t thank my
parents enough for putting up with me through my
formative years, as I now realize how beneficial their
hardness was on me.
PROPeR TITLe
Takes the Concierge
Approach to Business
By: Monica Dolecka
The success story behind Proper title goes back to 1996,
when Co-founder, Vitaliy Polyakov began his professional
title insurance career in the business development
sector with one of the largest title insurance companies
in Chicago, which later helped pave the way to his current
expertise in the title insurances field. From 1995 to 2003, Vitaliy
worked as real estate agent, managing broker, mortgage broker,
and held both, real estate appraisal and real estate educator,
licenses.
in 2003, Vitaliy co-founded success title services, serving
as the company’s Vice President of operations. his hard work
and determination eventually enabled an extensive growth
of the company, which initially began with a team of only 4
employees, later expanding to a reputably sized and respected
company operating in three states and underwritten by four major
underwriters.
demonstrates this better than the addition of over 30 employees
to their current team; a significant difference from the original 17
employees the company had just a few years ago.
it’s company’s breaking success is no accident. Proper
title thrives off a team-oriented mentality that aims to educate
employees so that every department understands the function of
the company as a whole. they offer state-of-the art courses so
their employees have access to the best education in the industry.
Vitaliy, who runs the company’s operations, proudly admits,
“our company runs smooth because everyone knows how
every branch of the business works. our team works efficiently
and every problem can be solved by anyone on our team.”
Currently, Proper title is expanding its presence with multiple
closing locations in lake, Cook, and duPage counties, as well
as in michigan and wisconsin. the company’s goal is to serve
clients in areas that are beginning to develop in the real estate
realm, as well as offer services in different states, but their
ultimate aim is to expand enough to be able to serve clientele in
From leFt to right:
ProPer title’s benJamin niernberg, VitaliY PolYakoV, Peter Janus and miChael golden
in 2013 Vitaliy partnered with the co-founders of the largest
privately owned real estate brokerage firms in us, @properties.
the partnership eventually influenced the establishment of Proper
title, llC, which acquired complete operations of the previous
success title. this lead Vitaliy to become a managing member
and executive officer of the company.
recently, Proper title was recognized as a top 25 Fidelity
national title agent in the midwest, receiving the “rising
star” award as the Fidelity national title’s fastest growing
title insurance agency. with this achievement, the company
anticipates even more growth and success, and nothing else
the residential, commercial, construction markets, and beyond.
and the company isn’t stopping there. Proper title is currently
sharing their success with a greater cause by helping serve the
community. the y have recently partnered with lurie’s Children’s
hospital to develop a charity program where the company
matches an employee’s contributions so that the children at
lurie’s can benefit from a maximized donation amount.
22 years ago, Vitaliy and his wife came to the states from kiev,
ukraine with enough money to last them only a week – yet Vitaliy
has proven that dedication and staying focused on his main goal
has led him to the very success he revels in today.

Hollywood Girl.
“Getting professional advice may
help you avoid big mistakes”
By: Monica Dolecka
What comes first: investing
money or saving money?
Even though I make my living
investing money for my clients,
saving money is what does
the heavy lifting in achieving
financial independence.
Saving money each year will
steadily build one’s “nest egg”.
Investment returns can vary
year to year but estimated
growth be achieved through
long-term investing.
What should I do with my
previous 401 K plan?
It is important to have
control over your retirement
assets. After leaving an
employer, many individuals
“rollover” their 401k assets
to an Individual Retirement
Account. This gives the
individual control over their
retirement assets while
avoiding income taxes and
early withdrawal penalties.
Working with an advisor
can help individuals select
the proper risk level, which
is usually based on time
frame and individual risk
tolerance.
How much risk should I
have in my portfolio?
This is based on your age,
net worth, and length
of investment. Getting
professional advice may help
you avoid mistakes in either
choosing too much risk or
too little risk. Risk tolerance
is built through education
and understanding market
forces.
Alex Grinshpun CFP, MBA
is the Investment Operations
Manager for Asset Management
Group (AMG) in Northbrook,
Illinois. amg’s broad
range of investor profiles perfectly
illustrates their common
sense approach to investing.
amg understands and embraces
everyone’s unique financial
needs and goals and may be
able to customize a plan based
on specific priorities and circumstances.
Having emigrating from
Ukraine at the age of 11, Alex
had literally come from crumbling
socialism, to the frontlines
of capitalism. He has lived
through two wars, a tech bubble,
a historic financial crisis, and a
housing market collapse. If anyone
knows about overcoming
obstacles, it’s Alex, who has hurdled
many in his life. Though it
hasn’t been easy, it has prepared
and motivated him to become a
successful financial professional.
Through hard work, determination,
and over 15 years of firstrate
experience in finance, Alex
has been able to reach one of
his biggest longtime professional
goals -– to guide others through
what he refers to as the “financial
jungle”.
Alex believes in, and practices,
a common sense approach
to investing. He feels
the first step is for people to
truly understand their financial
situation. When people understand
their financial goals and
reality, it is much easier for them
to stick to a plan that will help
them achieve optimal financial
independence.
Alex is passionate about
the importance of being financially
prepared. His goal is
to stand out from others in the industry
by seeking to understand
a client’s unique financial needs,
then tailoring a comprehensive
financial plan with a personalized
and humanistic approach.
Alex understands that the financial
decision making process is
not easy, and with his 17 years of
industry experience, he has developed
a simplified formula that
has worked for his clients.
A day in Capri
By: Alice Smelyansky
Tucked away in the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the Amalfi coast, lies an island with waters
so blue and clear you might forget where the sky ends and the water begins. With
a lavish beach, scenic views and luxury cars and boutiques, you can find a piece
of Italian paradise on the island of Capri. Though there’s plenty to be charmed by
in Capri, consider these attractions for a perfect getaway vacation:
Blue Grotto
Start your day off with a
visit to arguably Capri’s
most breathtaking
grotto, the “Blue Grotto.”
Depart from Marina
Grande on a group or
private tour boat and
make sure to get off the
boat when you see a
tiny cave with a sign that
says, “Grotta Azzurra.”
For 13 euros, allow
yourself to become
enchanted by the most
turquoise waters you’ve
ever seen.
Monte Solaro
chairlift
Once you return to the
Marina Grande, take
a bus (for about 20
minutes) into the town
of Anacapri. If it’s a
more comfortable ride
you seek, opt for one
of the island’s trendy
white taxis with orange
and purple velour
seating. Once you reach
Anacapri, for 10 euros
you can ride the Monte
Solaro chairlift.
Monte Solaro
Summit
Up at the top of the
summit, you won’t be
disappointed by the view
before you. From this
location, you can see
the Bays of Naples and
Salerno, not to mention
Capri’s iconic Faraglioni,
the three large rock
formations just off the
island’s coast.
Lemon Granita
Before you leave the
island, you must stop to
try the most delicious
semi-frozen Italian sweet
treat, granita, at the best
stand in Capri. Chiosco
Tizzano di Natalia e
Antonio Tizzano is the
name, but if a long
Italian name is difficult
to remember, here are
some easy-to-follow
directions: walk past the
Quissisanna Hotel and
turn right into the Caeser
Augustus Gardens.
Whether you try a classic
granita or coconut
gelato, you can’t go
wrong.
faraglioni
Just as the sun is about
to set, take a boat back
from the island to see
a beautiful sunset and
capture the mystical
Faraglioni rocks in your
picture.
nightlife and rich culture of music, food and art – all set
against nature’s majestic backdrop. My better half, aka
my husband, Jason Nichols, was lucky enough to visit
Iceland and was able to report back.
Jason is a proud founding member and Creative Lead
at Enso, a lovely little ad shop that’s out to change the
world by helping brands make a positive social impact.
He also happens to be the best travel mate and one of
the most stylish men I know, pulling off casual pocket
squares and tabi socks on a Tuesday at the office. NBD. I
know I’m biased, but I’m certain you too will fall in love
after reading his guide to Reykjavik.
respect. They were powerful and alluring,
dressed to the nines and bewitching men
like sirens with their gyrations. They also
might have been vampires. I steered clear
and enjoyed my time there.
Geysir
Kol
Skólavörðustígur 40
Beautifully cooked meats, perfectly poured
cocktails and massive murals of birds
define this new-ish eatery. Iceland is a sort
of meat and potatoes kind of country, and
the chefs at Kol know how to handle their
meats. Because my colleagues are people
who love to challenge the physical limits of
the human body, they ordered the roasted
half chicken with vegetable stuffing, topped
with foie gras and served with duck fat
french fries. It’s hot bird-on-bird action
that’s far more elegant than turducken, but
should not be eaten in its entirety if you
have plans later that evening.
The cocktails are crafted by
professionals. They’ve perfected the
classics while introducing “comfort food”
into their drinks with concoctions like Duck
Season, made of smoked duck fat washed
bourbon, maraschino and lemon.
Loftid
Austurstræti 9
This was easily one of the more interesting
and strange places I experienced in
Reykjavik. Edison bulbs swing above the
bar, illuminating a never-ending parade
of custom drinks that are modern takes
on classic punches, cocktails and elixirs.
The large back fire escape provides a
chilly respite for dance-weary smokers and
drinkers.
The first most important thing to know
is a dress code is enforced. The second
most important thing to know is that all
is not what it seems there. As the night
went on and the dance floor began to fill
with Reykjavik’s most cool and creative,
I noticed a disproportionate number of
attractive, single, middle-aged women
holding court and definitely on the prowl.
They behaved like a mafia, accepting
drinks and dances as tokens of well-earned
This store felt extra amazingly “Iceland”
(from my outsider perspective). As soon
as I walked in the door I was greeted by
a sawhorse draped in the fluffiest, most
sleep-inducing long-haired sheep pelts the
world has ever known. Sweaters, knit from
the wool of the immediate family members
of those sheep, line the walls and blanket
the tables. There are outdoorsy looking
jackets and boots and bags that can
handle anything the outdoors can dish out,
but also for looking fashionably outdoorsy.
They even have a grownup onesie
downstairs that I imagine some Icelandic
hulk of a man could somehow make look
normal. I am not that man.
During my entire adventure in Iceland I
wished my wife was by my side, but never
more than when I explored this almost
hidden treasure. Vibrant textiles splashed
color over the walls and fixtures. Dresses
burst with florals, ombres and watercolor
washes, draping themselves along displays
and onto the floor. I wanted my wife
wearing everything.
Men who enter this store are men of
way they present themselves to the world.
The men who work here are craftsmen of
a rare sort, laboring in a tradition of old to
help men transcend their status and bring
elegance back to a society that is sorely
lacking in it.
These employees are also in a sort of
pinup calendar wearing their finest digs,
which may undermine the whole elegance
thing but does a great job of capturing the
vibe and look of the store. It’s pretty damn
funny, too. On purpose. I think.
Executive Chef of Saranello’s
By Christian Davis
it’s the difference between deep-sea
diving with dolphins in the corral reef
and scuba diving in the kiddy pool. It’s
like going from skydiving at 30,000 feet to
falling out of bed. Once you have tasted
the sumptuous flavors at Saranello’s with a
side of their regal catering and a rusticmod
ambiance, you will never settle for
less. Master Chef Mychael Bonner delivers
an exquisite Italian cuisine derived from
his sojourns to Italy and France, as well
as from 28-years of professional practice.
His artistry allures the Chicago Bears and
celebrities from all over America such as
Fergie and Golf Megastar, Tiger Woods,
who feasted at Saranello’s all five days
of his stay at the Wheeling Westin last
summer.
With only the choicest ingredients, every
morsel is handcrafted within the fort walls
of the restaurant—from the pasta and
the sausage to the sauces and the pizza
dough. And by “choicest ingredients,”
I mean that Chef Bonner fished in the
Arctic Circle with the very mariners who
harvest his Alaskan King Crab—that the
Roasted Berkshire Pork Chop is an ancient
heirloom bovine that has never been
genetically altered—and that each recipe
has been meticulously crafted to the gram,
from over 28-years of trial and error.
Backed by a stellar brigade of long-time
culinary companions, Mychael Bonner
and Saranello’s will serve you an entr e n’
dessert to remember.
Personally, my evening at Saranello’s
started with an aged bottle of Napa
County Duckhorn. As my date was
deciding between an appetizer of Spinach
Gnocchi and Zuppa Di Mussels, I ordered
a Caprese Salad, comprised of fresh
arugula, heirloom tomatoes, house-made
mozzarella, and hand-crafted pesto. Then,
as I delicately tasted the nuances of its
bold flavor, our charming waiter suggested
one of Chef Bonner’s specialties, “The
Braised Beef Ravioli is a braised short rib,
delicately pulled and slow-cooked for six
hours in fresh vegetables, herbs and wine,
and filled into our home-made ravioli,
served with parmesan cheese and a meat
rag .” While my lovely date drooled over
his description, I decided to go with a
pan-seared, crunchy-skinned, Northern
Walleye Pike, and we finished dinner with
two Godiva Chocolate Martinis.
The bottom line is that the food was
so aesthetically spectacular that I almost
couldn’t devour it. But as I did, I recalled
something that Master Chef Bonner said
to me during our interview, “There is no
such thing as mastery, because a true
master is always seeking to exceed
their greatest creation.”
Italian Restaurant
Sylvia Perez
chicago has no shortage
of Italian restaurants.
Yet there always seems
to be word of a new
one opening up. I was
hearing a lot of buzz about this Italian
restaurant in River North located inside
the Godfrey Hotel called, dolce. Have
you been? If the answer is no, you are
definitely going to want to add it to
your “must try” list.
Where do I begin? Okay, how
about this. Every course they brought
out was AMAZING.
dolce is a sister restaurant to
award-winning Miami hot spot with the
same name. The restaurant recently
took top prize on Bravo TV’s Best New
Restaurant. This location is certainly
working hard to make sure Dolce
Chicago keeps up that reputation. The
decor is hip and pretty, but the best
thing is the layout is very spacious. The
tables aren’t crammed together so you
don’t feel like you’re sitting on your
neighbors lap.
We pretty much tried one of
everything. It’s what I like to do. But we
had a big group and we all shared.
Here are a few things you should
definitely order:
The Bruschetta came with three different toppings. The
restaurant prides itself on using seasonally focused foods and
local ingredients. So it’s always changing. The fresh burrata,
tomatoes, vegetables and prosciutto were accompanied with
a delicious balsamic on a perfectly toasted crostini.
The Neapolitan pizza stood out. We went with two
different toppings. The tartufata with spicy salami and truffle
oil and the contadina topped with fresh vegetables such as
eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and peppers. The crust was
perfect and did not overwhelm the flavors.
One of my absolute favorite items on the menu is
the grilled octopus with chickpeas, farro and pistachio
vinaigrette. I could just go there and eat this alone. But that
would not be good because then I’d miss out on the other
tasty items like the Dolce meatballs, just to name a few.
Hold on, we haven’t even gotten to the main course options
yet. The pasta is homemade and delicious. We shared a few,
but the fettuccine alla bolognese stood out. I have heard the
seafood is quite good. I’ll save that for my next trip.
I forgot to mention the cocktails. If you just want to pop in
for a quick drink and appetizers, the bar is very inviting and
roomy. The mixologists are helpful in steering you in the right
direction. Finally – dessert. Oh wait! I didn’t have any. After
hearing about what I just ate I’m sure you understand there
was no room left. But overall, everyone else seemed to enjoy
the desserts and, really, the whole experience.
It’s definitely worth a date night with your special
someone or a group of friends. Word is still getting out
about Dolce so you might be able to snag a reservation
with a few days notice. But hurry, it won’t be long, if it’s not
already too late before this place is so packed you’ll be
waiting weeks to get in.
How
Bru
Started
A DiscuSSion with Cafe Owner,
aLyona Udartseva
By: Becky Yeker
After checking off places on the long list of cafes
to eat, drink, and hang out in Wicker Park, I found
myself consistently intrigued by Bru, a coffee, juice,
and smoothie shop, in the heart of the six corners.
After sitting down with Alyona Udartseva, manager
and co-owner of Bru, I merely saw a glimpse of
the rapid success that Russian-Americans have
established here today. Whether it’s Chicago, New
York, or Miami, the Russian community has built
their reputation in the arts and business. Udartseva
infused art, nutrition, quality coffee, and gourmet
breakfast & lunch options into a spacious coffee
shop in Wicker Park.
54

First thing is first, where are you from
originally?
Vladivostok, Russia
Bru is a coffee shop that trumps the stigma of
what a coffee shop “should” be. It is the quiet
and refreshing space on the hectic and busy
Milwaukee Ave., surrounded by various coffee
shops that all bring different spices to the
neighborhood. What makes Bru different? Bru
is lively, open, peaceful, and stress-free. Some
customers have even said that they can “feel the
happiness from outside.” Udartseva created a
coffee shop different from all the rest, confirming
that Russians, in fact, do it best.
Why did you come to America?
I came to America for the first time at age
sixteen as a foreign exchange student.
After loving my experience here, I returned
to Russia, finished high school, started
college at Vladivostok State University of
Economics and Service and wrote my first
business plan. Then, I made my way to
Alaska to finish up my Bachelor’s Degree
and then finally found myself in Chicago
to work on my Master’s degree.
What were your initial goals when
you got here? After college?
As soon as the opportunity came to
follow my dreams, I immediately began
implementing my ideas from my original
business plan, like focusing on supporting
local artists and having a variety of
options on the menu.
When did Bru open?
On March 17th of 2014, Brü officially
opened for business.
Where did you get the ideas to start
something like
Bru?
I knew I wanted a
space that could
be a platform
for artists in the
community and
a local spot for
people to study
and hang out. I
wanted to focus
on having quality
product in an open and inviting space.
What makes Bru different than all
of the other coffee shops in Wicker
Park?
I really utilize the space we’re given. Being
in a neighborhood filled with many young
people, I wanted to divide the sections of
the store so that people could comfortably
study in one area and people could talk
and hang out in another. Brü also has
an art gallery that is open for comedy
open mics, poetry events, and is rented
out to sushi and cupcake making classes.
I also like to focus on making sure the
staff is welcoming and kind because we
are surrounded by so many coffee shops
that have intimidating auras and I want
to make sure that we don’t come off as
pretentious. We also have organic coffee
roasted by a Chicago-based company
called Sparrow, as well as organic
produce and vegetarian and vegan
options on both food and drink menus.
Are any of your ideas with Bru
dictated by your Russian background
at all?
We have a huge variety of teas and we
also have crepes! Coming from a Russian
background, art is truly valued, and I
wanted to make sure I could do the same
here.
What do you want Bru’s aura to be?
I want it to feel like you are at home sitting
on your couch and enjoying a cup of
coffee or doing your homework.
Newest Secret
Amidst dark alleyways and dim-light restaurants, well-dressed
individuals gather in clusters outside seemingly unassuming
doors. There’s no sign, no trademark exterior to attract
passerby. But this new trend is no gimmick, it’s a craze from
the past making its way onto the streets of Chicago. Want
to know what’s inside? Check out some of Chicago’s finest
speakeasies.
Originated during the Prohibition era in the 1920s, a
speakeasy was established as a hidden place to serve alcohol.
Though alcohol is legal today, secret bars are bringing back
the allure of exclusivity with tiny establishments tucked away
in basements and dark streets. For night dwellers that desire
a taste of the past, there’s no better place to discover a
mysterious world than at a speakeasy.
