The anticipated moment we have all been 

waiting for is finally here. we welcome you to the first 

issue of Rmag, as those who have all worked so hard 

to put forth their effort, knowledge, creativity and 

thought into this magazine, can finally share it with 

you! 

since there happens to be a large population 

of russian-speaking individuals that exist in the 

Chicagoland area, we wanted to create something 

special and unique for them. with such a diverse 

population that exists today, we cannot stress how 

exciting and refreshing it is to be able to be a part of 

the amazing experiences and lifestyles that living in 

america can provide, while staying true to your roots. 

we understand the importance of diversity, however, 

which is why we chose to cater to the sophisticated 

members of the russian-american community. doing 

so, we made sure to publish this magazine without any 

adaptation or translation to one particular language. 

including material in both russian and english, allows 

for you to receive and obtain information, stories, and 

various experiences that you can personally relate to. 

we want you to truly feel a part of something bigger 

(or smaller 

), as you take in the absolute best of the 

european culture and lifestyle. in addition to fashion 

advice, travel blogs, art reviews, and restaurant/

focuses and explores on a wide range of material that

Hobnobbing 

on september 12, 2015, more than 150 people 

gathered at thalia spice for a spectacular red 

carpet event featuring beautiful models, eclectic 

hats, and head pieces by top head wear designers, 

angela morano and goorin bros wicker Park. in 

this annual “hats & hobnobbing” event, guests 

were able to indulge in chair massages provided by 

dolce Vita spa, make-up transformations and body 

painting by ametrius Cosmetics, all while rocking 

trendy and unique head wear. this fashionable 

affair was produced by alicja burek, model and 

owner of alicja events, also known for the annual 

me, myself, and i events held every summer. “hats 

& hobnobbing” brings out an elegant and tight 

knit crowd of fashionistas, self-starters, and movers 

and shakers from all walks of life. additionally, a 

40 lb delicious and lavish chocolate hat, produced 

by dessert Concepts, was auctioned off during 

the event. guests were also enchanted by the red 

carpet hat fashion show, led by social avenue tV’s, 

Jeff Conway, followed by a late night of european 

and dance music provided by kbe entertainment.

it was a delight to see everyone have a 

good time at rmag’s sister publication, 

reVia magazine’s, havana nights event. 

on thursday september 24th, over 300 

people came out to help reVia close out 

the summer sizzle here in Chicago with 

a havana themed bash. shay nightclub 

in Chicago hosted yet another successful 

event that featured the very best of the 

downtown social scene. also co-hosting 

the night was the notable and elite status 

group. 

guests enjoyed Cuban-inspired cocktails 

and scrumptious bites while dancing 

the night away to the eclectic sounds of 

kamil bartoszcze & kb entertainment, 

with a special mid-event drum show 

by Chicago drum battery that wow’d 

the crowd with suave and sophisticated 

Cuban beats. 

the havana nights event benefitted 

a safe haven Foundation, a Chicagobased 

charity serving the underprivileged 

local community.

Black Harvest Film Festival 

on monday, august 17, 2015, 160 movie goers attended the screening 

of white water, part of the gene siskel Film Center (gsFC) 

of the school of the art institute of Chicago’s (saiC) 21st annual 

black harvest Film Festival. a red carpet and reception followed, 

hosted by roopa weber of ariel investments and the gsFC’s advisory 

board, les Coney of mesirow Financial, and the saiC’s 

board of governors. this was a cultivation event to align black 

harvest filmmakers with weber and Coney’s colleagues in the 

financial sector. 

Following the screening and Q&a, guests attended a reception 

featuring passed hors d’oeuvres generously donated 

by Chef Cliff rome of h-dogs and Peach’s and wine courtesy 

of love Cork screw, both black-owned businesses 

“the black harvest Film Festival addresses both the challenges 

and celebrations of the experiences of the black community 

of yesterday and today. with its growing reputation and 

attendance, through movies, one of the most accessible, human 

forms of art, black harvest continues to touch more hearts 

and minds each year. this year, the festival hosted an unprecedented 

number of filmmakers who engaged in post-screening 

discussions with audience members. white water depicts an 

aura of innocence and an immense sense of humor, which are 

qualities that director Cundieff brings to this story of a little boy’s 

eye-opening encounter with facts regarding segregation in his alabama 

hometown. Filmmakers involved in the making of white 

water who participated in the post-screening Q&a were director 

rusty Cundieff, producer and Chicago native dwayne Johnson- 

Cochran, and actors barry shabaka henley and sharon leal.

“Главное – найти себя”

От бодибилдера до руководителя 

театральной 

школы – таков путь 

этой необыкновенной 

женщины. Она работала 

в Италии, Франции, Англии, Шотландии. 

Сейчас живет и работает 

в Чикаго. В эксклюзивном интервью 

нашему журналу Паола Колетто 

рассказывает о своей жизни и о 

том, в чем уникальность The School 

for Theatre Creators. 

– Я родилась и выросла в городе Падуя 

(Италия). Училась в лицее (liceo 

classico): литература, латынь, греческий 

язык... Родителям было нелегко со мной. 

Я была настолько активной, что, родись 

в США, меня бы посадили на медикаменты, 

а в Италии отправляли играть 

на улицу. С детства я занималась спортом. 

Сначала – сама, потом в группе, 

потом образовала свой гимнастический 

класс и стала бодибилдером. Но через 

несколько лет стало трудно... Чтобы соревноваться 

с другими, нужны были стероиды... 

К тому моменту мне было двадцать 

четыре. Я стала интересоваться 

тем, что в Италии называется театром 

танца и движения. 

В мире всего сорок человек, которые 

учились у легендарного театрального 

актера и педагога Жака 

Лекока (1921-1999) в Парижской 

художественной академии (cole 

nationale Suprieure des Beaux-Arts) 

и стали педагогами. Паола Колетто 

– член этого “элитарного клуба”. 

Началось все так... 

– Летом в Падуе я смотрела в парке 

фильм. Передо мной сидел известный 

клоун. Он-то и рассказал мне о школе 

Лекока в Париже. Я ничего не знала 

о школе, о Лекоке, не знала, что он 

восемь лет провел в моей родной Падуе, 

у меня не было театрального опыта, 

я не говорила по-французски. Я знала 

одно – я должна быть там! И я поехала 

в Париж. 

“Я не пытаюсь быть режиссером, 

не навязываю никакой эстетики. Я 

просто стимулирую творческий поиск” 

– повторял Лекок. Процесс обучения 

в его Школе сводится к поиску 

“собственного клоуна”. Речь 

идет об открытии в себе своей собственной 

клоунской сути как источника 

игры. Лекок так описывает 

этот процесс: “...Чем меньше мы защищаемся, 

пытаясь играть какогото 

персонажа, тем больше нас изумляют 

наши собственные слабости, 

и тем сильнее проявляется наш 

клоун”. В Падуе Лекок преподавал 

сцендвижение. 

– Ваши первые ощущения от общения 

с Лекоком? 

– Я была очарована игрой, процессом, 

обучением. Впитывала уроки не 

мозгом, а телом. В Школе меня научили 

азам театрального мастерства. 

Многие из студентов не говорили пофранцузски. 

Нас разделили по группам, 

в каждой – шесть-семь человек. Мы учились 

понимать друг друга... Лекок никогда 

не навязывал своей философии, не 

говорил о ней, как о Системе, которую 

нужно пройти от и до. Он давал нам ингредиенты, 

но никогда – готовое блюдо. 

Блюда мы готовили сами. Убрать все 

наносное, оставить свое – долгий процесс. 

Когда ты нащупаешь это “свое”, ты 

сможешь сделать все, что угодно. Это 

то, чем мы занимаемся в нашей школе. 

(Объясняя разницу, Паола употребляет 

слова “to play” и “to act’. – ПРИМ. АВТО- 

РА.) Я говорю студентам: “Я не знаю, помогаю 

ли я вам стать актерами. Я помогаю 

вам найти себя. Дальше вы можете 

плыть в любом направлении. Наша 

Школа – потрясающее путешествие 

внутрь себя”. 

СПОРТСМЕНКА-БОДИБИЛДЕР, АКТРИСА-РЕЖИССЕР 

После окончания учебы Паола Колетто 

переехала в Англию и создала 

театральную труппу. Потом 

были шесть месяцев работы в Севилье 

на выставке ЭКСПО-92, год 

жизни на севере Шотландии, где 

не было никого, кроме снега и медведей, 

и пять лет в Падуе, где Паола 

вместе с сокурсником (он тоже 

родом из Падуи) создали театральную 

школу: “Я там провела около 

пяти лет, а потом мы с ним разошлись 

в разные стороны. Он хотел 

делать Школу по жестким канонам, 

а я мыслила широкими категориями...”. 

В Европе Паола работала 

как актриса, снялась в нескольких 

фильмах... “Я поняла, что обожаю 

преподавать, работать со студентами.” 

С такими мыслями Паола оказалась 

в США. 

– Будучи в Падуе, я испытала ужас от 

рутины. У меня была Школа, и я представила 

себя в ней через пятьдесят лет. 

Боже мой, ничего нового? Для меня стало 

ясно, что еще не пришло время останавливаться. 

Я хотела путешествовать, 

знакомиться с разными людьми. Мой 

бывший супруг – американец. Он был 

счастлив, когда я предложила ему уехать 

из Падуи. Сначала мы поехали в 

Лос-Анджелес. Город мне не понравился 

совсем. Мне понравился Нью-Йорк, 

но я бы не смогла там жить. Слишком 

много всего и сразу! Первое чувство в 

Чикаго – я приехала домой. Я чувствую 

себя по-настоящему комфортно в Чика-

го. Потом уже я открыла, какой это прекрасный 

культурный город. Когда мы 

здесь обосновались, я встретилась с директором 

танцевального факультета De 

Paul University и немедленно получила 

работу адъюнкт-профессора. Проработала 

восемь лет, потом преподавала 

в University of Illinois, Columbia College. 

Обжилась в Чикаго, начала формировать 

свои собственные классы. 

– Что вы можете сказать об 

американской системе обучения? 

– Мой эксперимент с американскими 

университетами был феноменальным. Я 

учила молодых студентов, которые заплатили 

большие деньги и хотели заниматься. 

Мне надо было их заинтересовать, 

чтобы они остались в моем классе. 

Первое время у меня был шок. Такое 

впечатление, что ни у кого нет тела. Актеры 

выходят, произносят текст, и все... 

Американские и европейские студенты 

очень разные. Две вещи я поняла сразу. 

Первое – для американских студентов 

непривычна критика, а без критики нет 

движения вперед. И второе (связанное с 

первым): студенты выступают в качестве 

клиентов. Они заплатили большие деньги 

и теперь требуют “сервиса”. Такое 

отношение я встречала везде: в DePaul, 

Columbia... Это ужасно. Мой “сервис” – 

быть собой. Но как только они понимают, 

что я хочу сказать, они принимают 

мою систему. Да, я тебя подталкиваю, 

но я рядом, и я тебе помогаю... 

– Вы же прекрасно понимаете, 

что из страны великих театральных 

традиций вы приехали в страну 

без всяких традиций. Традиция 

театра масок уходит в xVII век. 

Мы все знаем мима Пьеро, имена 

Жана Гаспара Батиста Дебюро, 

Этьена Декру, Антонина Арто, 

Жан-Луи Барро, Марселя Марсо и 

его Бипа... Реальность такова, что 

подавляющее большинство американских 

студентов просто не знает 

о европейском театре и идеях Лекока. 

Посмотрите вокруг. Кто сегодня 

в театрах Чикаго использует 

его идеи? Никто. Как вы работаете 

в таком окружении? 

– Нельзя сказать, что студенты не 

интересуются этим театром. Вы правы 

– они просто его не знают. Я предлагаю 

им открыть дверь и впустить в комнату 

свежий воздух. Это все равно, что 

есть еду из “Макдональдса” и не знать 

о филе. Они не знают, любят ли они 

филе или нет, – они просто его никогда 

не пробовали. Вот это и есть мой американский 

опыт. Студенты не отвергают 

мои уроки. Наоборот, они с интересом 

открывают для себя новые возможности... 

– Что вы думаете о разнице 

между физическим и психологическим 

театрами? 

– Я никогда не принимала эту терминологию 

– “физический театр”. Для 

меня это разделение не имеет никакого 

смысла. Театр – в принципе физическое 

действие. Мы думаем, что физическое 

означает движение, но неподвижность 

– тоже движение. У всего есть движение. 

Вы входите в комнату с определенным 

настроением, оно может изменить 

правила. Настроение – тоже движение. 

В театре нет разделения на категории. 

Есть плохой театр и хороший 

театр. В хорошем театре меня не волнует, 

много ли в нем текста или нет текста 

вообще, есть ли движения или нет. Я иду 

за таким театром, он заставляет меня 

трепетать... 

– Каковы ваши критерии в выборе 

студентов? 

– Наша Школа – театральное путешествие 

в мир нового и неизведанного. 

Я хочу видеть в Школе неравнодушных, 

заинтересованных молодых людей, жаждущих 

поисков и экспериментов, я приглашаю 

людей, готовых к переменам. 

Они должны хотеть учиться так же, как 

хотела учиться я, ничего не зная о школе 

Лекока... Мы проводим со студентами 

все время. Наша Школа не имеет ничего 

общего с обычной школой. В обычной 

школе есть расписание – у нас его 

нет. Я не провожу предварительных экзаменов. 

Неважно, чем занимается студент 

и кто он по специальности, – наши 

уроки начинаются с нуля. Иногда отсутствие 

опыта даже лучше. Я не тороплю 

студентов с формальной регистрацией. 

Они должны вначале понять, в чем заключается 

наша учеба. После выпуска 

наши студенты получают диплом, подобный 

европейскому. На сегодняшний 

день процесс обучения составляет девять 

месяцев: три месяца в Чикаго, три 

месяца в Италии и три месяца снова в 

Чикаго. В Италии мы знакомим студентов 

с искусством театра масок... 

– Как вы выживаете в наши тяжелые 

времена? Вокруг так много 

театральных школ... 

– Благодаря уникальной программе, 

мне кажется. Никто не предлагает взглянуть 

на свое тело, научиться управлять 

им... К тому же я знаю, как преподавать. 

Я отдаю студентам всю душу, и они это 

ценят. 

Новый сезон в The School for Theatre 

Creators начался в конце сентября, 

а в январе 2016 года Паола со студентами 

снова отправляются в Италию.

Cellulite: 

Is there hope? 

Cellulite is the term used to describe the dimpling of the skin most commonly 

seen around the hips and thighs. It is more common in women than men, 

and also more frequently seen in older, post-menopausal women. The 

difference between the sexes is due to the makeup of the connective tissue 

between the overlaying skin and the deep muscle fascia. In women, this 

fascia has been shown to be more vertically oriented, thus creating closed 

pockets that cause enlarged or excessive fat cells in order to “push out” the 

overlaying adjacent skin, which leads to the puckering we call “cellulite”. 

When cellulite is present, there is nothing abnormal about a person’s body 

makeup, or their fat cells. Even a thin athletic body can have localized areas 

of dimpling due to the connective tissue compartmentalizing the fat between 

the skin and underlying muscle. The question is: What can be done?

CReAMS 

we have all seen ads in fashion magazines 

and infomercials marketing a wonder 

cream that can “dissolve” cellulite. most 

of these creams contain a medicine called 

theophylline. theophylline is a commonly 

prescribed asthma medication that also 

has a diuretic effect. there have been 

many subjective reports of improved 

body contour and cellulite, as well as a 

decrease in waist and thigh circumference 

with the use of theophylline, however, the 

problem is there is no scientific evidence 

supporting these individual claims. but the 

good news is that are minimal side effects 

from these kinds of products. there is 

minimal systemic absorption of the cream, 

in addition to the very low chance [25%] of 

developing a rash. 

MASSAGe 

endermologie is a form of deep tissue 

massage where a mechanical device is 

used to essentially suction up folds of skin 

and roll it two revolving rollers. it breaks 

down fat and excretes it from the body, 

leading to a corrected body contour 

purified of irregularities and cellulite. 

an analysis of bodily fluids proves these 

claims to be unfounded, but there is an 

increase in collagen above the muscle 

fascia, which may lead to a smoothing 

out of contour irregularities. however, this 

is yet to proven with clear scientific data. 

other things to consider with this form of 

cellulite treatment is that it may take up to 

14 treatments, which may be painful, and 

is also on the more expensive side. 

radio frequency (Javeshape tm , accent tm , 

thermage) utilizes radiofrequency to heat 

up the skin and subcutaneous tissue to 

create skin tightening and slight volume 

reduction. this technology can create 

a tighter, smoother and long-lasting 

appearance of the skin, usually taking 1-3 

treatments before achieving desired results. 

SuRGICAL TReATMenT 

surgical treatment is also a reasonable 

and reliable option for treating the 

underlying cause of cellulite. an 

instrument called a pickle for, or loop 

lysing cannula, can be used to disrupt 

the facial attachment between the skin 

and underlying musical fascia that causes 

dimpling. this may need to be combined 

with liposuction, or fat injection, to 

improve any contour irregularity and 

prevent reattachment of the fascia, thereby 

providing an overall improvement in body 

contour and appearance. 

LASeR THeRAPY 

Cellulaze is another invasive treatment that 

utilizes laser (light) therapy to break up and 

liquefy the fibrous bands of the fat packets. 

the additional heat from the laser will also 

improve the amount of skin tightening. in 

this situation, it is wise to seek someone 

experienced with laser treatments because 

there is always the risk of causing 

permanent burns to the skin. 

Cellulite is a difficult, and often 

misunderstood, problem affecting even 

the most “fit” individuals. there is also 

little scientific evidence behind the many 

treatments currently advertised in media, 

especially on tV and in magazines. 

Fortunately, many of these treatments have 

little to no side effects. surgical intervention 

is an option, but only after thoughtful and 

serious consideration. 

overall, leading a healthy lifestyle by 

getting adequate exercise, and maintaining 

a balanced diet are the best ways for 

people to achieve their own “ideal” body.

С 1997 года в Чикаго в 

помещении Briar Street Theater 

с непременным аншлагом 

проходит уникальное 

театрализованное шоу 

“инопланетян с синей кожей”. 

Так во всем мире называют 

коллектив Blue Man Group.

Все началось в манхэттенской 

школе Нью-Йорка, в 

которой познакомились 

и подружились друг с 

другом Крис Винк и Мэтт 

Голдман. После школы 

их пути разошлись: Крис поступил в 

Wesleyan University (Коннектикут), а 

Мэтт – в Clark University (Массачусетс). 

Закончив учебу, в 1984 году друзья 

вновь встретились в Нью-Йорке. В 1986 

году к ним присоединился будущий 

третий участник группы Фил Стэнтон. 

Так возникло трио Винк-Голдман- 

Стэнтон. Сценический образ придумали 

сразу: “придурки”, вымазанные синей 

краской, заставили обратить на себя 

внимание. А уж когда они взяли в руки 

музыкальные инструменты – длинные, 

узкие трубы из поливинилхлорида, 

– стало ясно, что такого в мире 

шоу-бизнеса еще не было. На это и 

рассчитывали наши герои. Первые 

концерты группы прошли в Нью-Йорке. 

На одном из выступлений группы 

их увидел артистический директор 

музыкального клуба при нью-йоркском 

театре “La MaMa” Мэрил Владимер. 

Быстро разобравшись, какая бомба 

заложена в этой группе, он заказал 

им первое полное шоу “Tubes” и 

представил его в своем театре. 

Положительная рецензия театрального 

критика газеты “The New York Times” 

Стивена Холдена окончательно 

закрепила успех. Популярность Blue 

Man Group росла стремительно. 

Регулярное шоу Blue Man Group 

“Tubes” открылось в нью-йоркском Astor 

Place Theater в 1991 году. 

После выступления в Линкольнцентре 

группа получает престижные 

Obie Award (1990-1991 годы), Lucille 

Lortel Award (1992 год, за лучшее 

off-Broadway шоу) и Drama Desk 

Award (1992 год, с формулировкой “за 

уникальный театральный эксперимент”). 

На стиль Blue Man Group большое 

влияние оказала бразильская группа 

“Уакти” во главе с композитором Марко 

Антонио Гумараесом. Эта группа 

играет на инструментах, сделанных 

своими руками. 

Всемирный успех ждал группу в 

2003 году во время турне с концертом 

“Complex Rock Tour”. Позднее этот 

концерт был выпущен на DVD. В 2006 

году группа провела второй тур “How to 

Be a Megastar Tour 2.0”. 

В 2011 году Blue Man Group 

получила еще одну престижную награду 

– приз зрительских симпатий за лучшее 

долгоиграющее шоу Off Broadway 

Alliance Awards. 

Сегодня основатели группы Крис

занимают административные посты 

в компании “Blue Man Productions”,

шоу Blue Man Group. “Инопланетяне

появление группы 1 июля на Grant 

Park Music Festival в центре Чикаго. 

Blue Man Group выступала вместе с 

Чикагским молодежным симфоническим 

оркестром (Chicago Youth Symphony 

Orchestras). 

Blue Man Group – особое явление в 

современной американской культуре. 

Здесь намешано все: театр, музыка, 

видеоряд, изобразительное искусство, 

мюзикл, игра на нестандартных ударных 

инструментах. Есть номера, которые 

остаются в репертуаре группы со 

дня основания, но есть и добавления. 

Например, в чикагском шоу мне 

особенно запомнился номер “GiPads”, 

пародирующий отношение людей к 

сотовым телефонам, айпэдам и прочим 

удобным “гаджетам”. 

Кроме “синих инопланетян”, 

играющих на барабанах, музыкальное 

сопровождение шоу обеспечивает 

трио профессиональных музыкантов. 

Они выпустили пять альбомов, один из 

которых – “Аудио” – был номинирован 

на премию “Грэмми”. 

В первые годы выступлений члены 

группы после окончания концерта 

оставались на сцене, общались со 

зрителями, раздавали автографы. 

Впоследствии, однако, эту традицию 

изменили, и теперь единственным 

“общением” со зрителями является 

пятно синей краски. При этом после 

концертов члены группы и музыканты 

по-прежнему позируют зрителям. 

Интересна история Briar Street 

Theater, в котором проходят 

представления Blue Man Group в 

Чикаго. Первоначально здание служило 

конюшней для лошадей компании 

Marshall Fields. В 1970 году бизнесмен 

Уолт Топель купил это здание и 

превратил его в... киностудию. С 1977 

по 1985 годы в этом здании снимали 

фильмы. Но кинопроизводство у 

Топеля шло неважно, и тогда он решил 

построить из киностудии театр, назвав 

его “Улица шиповника”. На “Улице...” 

выступали многие театральные 

колективы, но представления Blue 

Man Group пока остаются самыми 

популярными.

Да, меня и брата так воспитали. 

КСТАТИ, О БРАТЕ. БЫЛ МОМЕНТ КОНКУРЕНЦИИ С

Нет, на тот момент я уже был победителем, и брат тоже. 

Мы всегда друг друга поддерживали. На нас всегда 

смотрели родственники. Я очень благодарен семье за 

воспитание и помощь, меня строго воспитывали и дали 

шанс достичь чего-то в жизни. Даже не мечтал выиграть 

в Америке и в мире такой чемпионат по бальным танцам, 

я горжусь этим. Хочу быть примером для следующего 

поколения.

Она естественна, талантлива и замечательный человек.

Румер очень благодарный человек.Она родилась в 

среде, где могла стать совершенно другой, человеком, 

который считает, что ему все обязаны. А она абсолютно 

не избалована, очень трудолюбива и талантлива – 

прекрасно поет и записывает альбом, у нее отличные 

актерские данные.

Vika Petlakh is a twenty-year-old photographer 

living in Los Angeles, California. Raised in a 

Russian household in Chicago, she brings her 

innovative and captivating style to the West 

Coast, where she captures classic beauty through 

a variety of models. Vika has been published 

in Vogue Italy, Elegant Magazine, EDITORIAL 

Magazine, and many more renowned publications. 

She has worked with the cast of the hit TV show, 

Chicago Fire for Felix Mag and has an array of 

themed photo shoots all listed on her website. We 

were able to sit down with the young talent to 

discuss her background, her goals, and her roots.

Where are you from? Tell us about your Russian 

roots 

My whole family is from Minsk, Belarus – excluding 

my younger brother who was the first to be born in 

the USA. I moved to Chicago with my mom at the age 

of 2 and basically grew up there. 

When did you first pick up a camera and when 

did you know that it was something you had a 

knack for? 

Ironically I started photographing on a trip to LA, 

(where I live now) when I was with my family, visiting 

for my cousins wedding about 7 years ago. My life 

has always been immersed in the arts and for some 

reason I felt the need to photograph my trip in LA with 

my dad’s point-and-shoot camera; I think it may be 

because of how pretty I thought everything looked. 

It is clear that you worked hard for your success. 

How did you go about making the connections 

you made and getting yourself out 

there? 

Networking. Networking. Networking. I’m a naturally 

friendly and outgoing person. My dad taught me 

early on that 1000 friends will get you further than 

1000 dollars. I took this to heart and focused on actually 

making connections with people rather than just 

trying to make money any way I could. 

What were your original plans with photography 

and how have they changed? 

It was just a hobby... until people began responding 

to my work and really taking me seriously as 

a photographer. It really was surreal almost. I just 

pushed buttons and played with light the way I liked. 

This is still what I do, just with a little more method to 

my madness. 

As an artist, what is your ideal approach to 

taking photos? Do you have a certain style you 

like to maintain? …A certain image? 

I’d like to think I have a certain style, but I’m still figuring 

it out. My tastes and ideas change constantly, as I 

get inspired by each shoot individually. 

You’re living in LA now, right? What was the 

transition from Chicago to LA like? 

It’s been terrifying and so far the most rewarding year 

of my life. I had never lived out of my parents home 

before, let alone on the other side of the country 

whilst supporting myself financially. 

What are your future goals with your career? 

Just to continue creating work that people will respond 

to, as well as being able to travel constantly. 

Do you feel as if growing up Russian impacted 

your success? Influenced you at all? 

I would certainly think that growing up in a very 

Russian household has affected me and instilled 

strong values and habits that have shaped me into a 

hardworking, self reliant individual. I can’t thank my 

parents enough for putting up with me through my 

formative years, as I now realize how beneficial their 

hardness was on me.

ты начинала? 

Я окончила музыкальную школу 

имени Чайковского. Позже получила 

широкопрофильное образование у ведущих 

профессоров знаменитой музыкальной академии 

имени П.И. Чайковского и получила степень 

магистра в области музыки, вокала, композиции. 

Принимала участие в турах классического 

исполнения музыки по США и в двадцати странах 

мира. Выступала в Лондоне на Лланголленском 

Международном музыкальном турнире под эгидой 

Ее Величества королевы Елизаветы II, в котором 

получила в награду серебряную медаль. Также 

удостоилась чести выступать на Международном 

фестивале классической музыки Золотые ворота 

в Сан-Франциско, где получила свою вторую 

серебряную медаль, а также две золотые 

медали и престижный Гран-при в категории 

классического исполнения. Потом я сама стала 

писать песни. Решила поменять жанр, ближе к

Нет, хотя мои педагоги были в шоке. Классику я 

пою до сих пор. В моем репертуаре есть такие 

произведения. Если есть классическая школа, 

легко петь все остальное. 

Какая музыка тебе наиболее близка? 

Близко то, что я пишу. Я пишу в разных 

жанрах. Что от души идет, то и пишу, и пою. К 

конкретному стилю я не привязана. 

Песня Hollywood Girl вошла в твой новый 

альбом? 

Да, эту песню я написала для фильма “Белые 

вороны”, о трех российских девушках, попавших в 

Голливуд. Когда режиссер фильма услышала меня 

в студии звукозаписи, она попросила написать 

песню для фильма. Так я и решила написать 

Hollywood Girl. В этом фильме звучали еще две 

моих песни. Я, как Алиса в Стране Чудес, играла 

главные роли. 

О чем этот фильм? 

Три русских девушки приезжают из Москвы 

в Голливуд и попадают в разные ситуации. 

Как часто и происходит в реальной жизни. В 

Голливуде очень сложно пробиться. Скоро 

состоится мировой дистрибьюшен фильма. 

Главных героинь играют известные российские 

актрисы Марина Орлова и Дана Агишева. Это 

комедийный фильм, который заканчивается хэппиэндом. 

Но будет еще и продолжение – “Белые 

вороны 2 и 3”.

попала в Голливуд? Как мечта становится 

реальностью? 

Это длинная дорога. Нужно верить в себя и 

очень много работать. У меня записано уже три 

альбома: русский, английский, испанский. У меня 

есть мечта и цель. Я знаю, что буду знаменитой. 

В своих мечтах ты, прежде всего, кто – 

актриса или певица? 

Я, конечно, певица. Актриса – это хобби, а песня 

– это я, моя душа, жизнь.

Youthful and historic, quirky yet sophisticated, Reykjavik 

is rightly the gateway to Iceland with a booming 

nightlife and rich culture of music, food and art – all set 

against nature’s majestic backdrop. My better half, aka 

my husband, Jason Nichols, was lucky enough to visit 

Iceland and was able to report back. 

Jason is a proud founding member and Creative Lead 

at Enso, a lovely little ad shop that’s out to change the 

world by helping brands make a positive social impact. 

He also happens to be the best travel mate and one of 

the most stylish men I know, pulling off casual pocket 

squares and tabi socks on a Tuesday at the office. NBD. I 

know I’m biased, but I’m certain you too will fall in love 

after reading his guide to Reykjavik.

define this new-ish eatery. Iceland is a sort 

of meat and potatoes kind of country, and 

the chefs at Kol know how to handle their 

meats. Because my colleagues are people 

who love to challenge the physical limits of 

the human body, they ordered the roasted 

half chicken with vegetable stuffing, topped 

with foie gras and served with duck fat 

french fries. It’s hot bird-on-bird action 

that’s far more elegant than turducken, but 

should not be eaten in its entirety if you 

have plans later that evening. 

The cocktails are crafted by 

professionals. They’ve perfected the 

classics while introducing “comfort food” 

into their drinks with concoctions like Duck 

Season, made of smoked duck fat washed 

bourbon, maraschino and lemon.

This was easily one of the more interesting 

and strange places I experienced in 

Reykjavik. Edison bulbs swing above the 

bar, illuminating a never-ending parade 

of custom drinks that are modern takes 

on classic punches, cocktails and elixirs.

chilly respite for dance-weary smokers and 

drinkers. 

The first most important thing to know 

is a dress code is enforced. The second 

most important thing to know is that all 

is not what it seems there. As the night 

went on and the dance floor began to fill 

with Reykjavik’s most cool and creative, 

I noticed a disproportionate number of 

attractive, single, middle-aged women 

holding court and definitely on the prowl. 

They behaved like a mafia, accepting 

drinks and dances as tokens of well-earned

This store felt extra amazingly “Iceland” 

(from my outsider perspective). As soon 

as I walked in the door I was greeted by 

a sawhorse draped in the fluffiest, most 

sleep-inducing long-haired sheep pelts the 

world has ever known. Sweaters, knit from 

the wool of the immediate family members 

of those sheep, line the walls and blanket 

the tables. There are outdoorsy looking 

jackets and boots and bags that can 

handle anything the outdoors can dish out, 

but also for looking fashionably outdoorsy.

downstairs that I imagine some Icelandic 

hulk of a man could somehow make look 

normal. I am not that man.

During my entire adventure in Iceland I

hidden treasure. Vibrant textiles splashed 

color over the walls and fixtures. Dresses

wearing everything.

inspiration from materials and iconic 

natural landmarks around the country. The 

exterior resembles a mountainous rocket 

ship more than a house of god. It is said 

that his rippling block pillar facade is 

designed to resemble the basalt lava flows 

of Iceland’s landscape. Its observation 

tower is the tallest structure in Reykjavik 

and is the only place that provides clear 

views of the entire city and surrounding 

landscape.

it’s the difference between deep-sea 

diving with dolphins in the corral reef 

and scuba diving in the kiddy pool. It’s 

like going from skydiving at 30,000 feet to 

falling out of bed. Once you have tasted 

the sumptuous flavors at Saranello’s with a 

side of their regal catering and a rusticmod 

ambiance, you will never settle for 

less. Master Chef Mychael Bonner delivers 

an exquisite Italian cuisine derived from 

his sojourns to Italy and France, as well 

as from 28-years of professional practice. 

His artistry allures the Chicago Bears and 

celebrities from all over America such as 

Fergie and Golf Megastar, Tiger Woods, 

who feasted at Saranello’s all five days 

of his stay at the Wheeling Westin last 

summer. 

With only the choicest ingredients, every 

morsel is handcrafted within the fort walls 

of the restaurant—from the pasta and 

the sausage to the sauces and the pizza 

dough. And by “choicest ingredients,” 

I mean that Chef Bonner fished in the 

Arctic Circle with the very mariners who 

harvest his Alaskan King Crab—that the 

Roasted Berkshire Pork Chop is an ancient 

heirloom bovine that has never been 

genetically altered—and that each recipe 

has been meticulously crafted to the gram, 

from over 28-years of trial and error. 

Backed by a stellar brigade of long-time 

culinary companions, Mychael Bonner 

and Saranello’s will serve you an entr e n’ 

dessert to remember. 

Personally, my evening at Saranello’s 

started with an aged bottle of Napa 

County Duckhorn. As my date was 

deciding between an appetizer of Spinach 

Gnocchi and Zuppa Di Mussels, I ordered 

a Caprese Salad, comprised of fresh 

arugula, heirloom tomatoes, house-made 

mozzarella, and hand-crafted pesto. Then, 

as I delicately tasted the nuances of its 

bold flavor, our charming waiter suggested 

one of Chef Bonner’s specialties, “The 

Braised Beef Ravioli is a braised short rib, 

delicately pulled and slow-cooked for six 

hours in fresh vegetables, herbs and wine, 

and filled into our home-made ravioli, 

served with parmesan cheese and a meat 

rag .” While my lovely date drooled over 

his description, I decided to go with a 

pan-seared, crunchy-skinned, Northern 

Walleye Pike, and we finished dinner with 

two Godiva Chocolate Martinis. 

The bottom line is that the food was 

so aesthetically spectacular that I almost 

couldn’t devour it. But as I did, I recalled 

something that Master Chef Bonner said 

to me during our interview, “There is no 

such thing as mastery, because a true 

master is always seeking to exceed 

their greatest creation.”

of Italian restaurants. 

Yet there always seems 

to be word of a new 

one opening up. I was 

hearing a lot of buzz about this Italian 

restaurant in River North located inside 

the Godfrey Hotel called, dolce. Have 

you been? If the answer is no, you are 

definitely going to want to add it to 

your “must try” list. 

Where do I begin? Okay, how 

about this. Every course they brought 

out was AMAZING. 

dolce is a sister restaurant to 

award-winning Miami hot spot with the 

same name. The restaurant recently 

took top prize on Bravo TV’s Best New 

Restaurant. This location is certainly 

working hard to make sure Dolce 

Chicago keeps up that reputation. The 

decor is hip and pretty, but the best 

thing is the layout is very spacious. The 

tables aren’t crammed together so you 

don’t feel like you’re sitting on your 

neighbors lap. 

We pretty much tried one of 

everything. It’s what I like to do. But we 

had a big group and we all shared.

The Bruschetta came with three different toppings. The 

restaurant prides itself on using seasonally focused foods and 

local ingredients. So it’s always changing. The fresh burrata, 

tomatoes, vegetables and prosciutto were accompanied with 

a delicious balsamic on a perfectly toasted crostini. 

The Neapolitan pizza stood out. We went with two 

different toppings. The tartufata with spicy salami and truffle 

oil and the contadina topped with fresh vegetables such as 

eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and peppers. The crust was 

perfect and did not overwhelm the flavors. 

One of my absolute favorite items on the menu is 

the grilled octopus with chickpeas, farro and pistachio 

vinaigrette. I could just go there and eat this alone. But that 

would not be good because then I’d miss out on the other 

tasty items like the Dolce meatballs, just to name a few. 

Hold on, we haven’t even gotten to the main course options 

yet. The pasta is homemade and delicious. We shared a few, 

but the fettuccine alla bolognese stood out. I have heard the 

seafood is quite good. I’ll save that for my next trip. 

I forgot to mention the cocktails. If you just want to pop in 

for a quick drink and appetizers, the bar is very inviting and 

roomy. The mixologists are helpful in steering you in the right 

direction. Finally – dessert. Oh wait! I didn’t have any. After 

hearing about what I just ate I’m sure you understand there 

was no room left. But overall, everyone else seemed to enjoy 

the desserts and, really, the whole experience. 

It’s definitely worth a date night with your special 

someone or a group of friends. Word is still getting out 

about Dolce so you might be able to snag a reservation 

with a few days notice. But hurry, it won’t be long, if it’s not 

already too late before this place is so packed you’ll be 

waiting weeks to get in.

After checking off places on the long list of cafes 

to eat, drink, and hang out in Wicker Park, I found 

myself consistently intrigued by Bru, a coffee, juice, 

and smoothie shop, in the heart of the six corners. 

After sitting down with Alyona Udartseva, manager 

and co-owner of Bru, I merely saw a glimpse of 

the rapid success that Russian-Americans have 

established here today. Whether it’s Chicago, New 

York, or Miami, the Russian community has built 

their reputation in the arts and business. Udartseva 

infused art, nutrition, quality coffee, and gourmet 

breakfast & lunch options into a spacious coffee 

shop in Wicker Park.

First thing is first, where are you from 

originally? 

Vladivostok, Russia 

Bru is a coffee shop that trumps the stigma of 

what a coffee shop “should” be. It is the quiet 

and refreshing space on the hectic and busy 

Milwaukee Ave., surrounded by various coffee 

shops that all bring different spices to the 

neighborhood. What makes Bru different? Bru 

is lively, open, peaceful, and stress-free. Some 

customers have even said that they can “feel the 

happiness from outside.” Udartseva created a 

coffee shop different from all the rest, confirming 

that Russians, in fact, do it best. 

Why did you come to America? 

I came to America for the first time at age 

sixteen as a foreign exchange student. 

After loving my experience here, I returned 

to Russia, finished high school, started 

college at Vladivostok State University of 

Economics and Service and wrote my first 

business plan. Then, I made my way to 

Alaska to finish up my Bachelor’s Degree 

and then finally found myself in Chicago 

to work on my Master’s degree. 

What were your initial goals when 

you got here? After college? 

As soon as the opportunity came to 

follow my dreams, I immediately began 

implementing my ideas from my original 

business plan, like focusing on supporting 

local artists and having a variety of 

options on the menu. 

When did Bru open? 

On March 17th of 2014, Brü officially 

opened for business. 

Where did you get the ideas to start 

something like 

Bru? 

I knew I wanted a 

space that could 

be a platform 

for artists in the 

community and 

a local spot for 

people to study 

and hang out. I 

wanted to focus 

on having quality 

product in an open and inviting space. 

What makes Bru different than all 

of the other coffee shops in Wicker 

Park? 

I really utilize the space we’re given. Being 

in a neighborhood filled with many young 

people, I wanted to divide the sections of 

the store so that people could comfortably 

study in one area and people could talk 

and hang out in another. Brü also has 

an art gallery that is open for comedy 

open mics, poetry events, and is rented 

out to sushi and cupcake making classes. 

I also like to focus on making sure the 

staff is welcoming and kind because we 

are surrounded by so many coffee shops 

that have intimidating auras and I want 

to make sure that we don’t come off as 

pretentious. We also have organic coffee 

roasted by a Chicago-based company 

called Sparrow, as well as organic 

produce and vegetarian and vegan 

options on both food and drink menus. 

Are any of your ideas with Bru 

dictated by your Russian background 

at all? 

We have a huge variety of teas and we 

also have crepes! Coming from a Russian 

background, art is truly valued, and I 

wanted to make sure I could do the same 

here. 

What do you want Bru’s aura to be? 

I want it to feel like you are at home sitting 

on your couch and enjoying a cup of 

coffee or doing your homework.
