My fellow anglers and friends,
Greetings to all. We live in darker hazy days. I have gotten
beaten down by the haze twice in two months. It is not easy
to stay indoors especially when one’s hobby is out there in
the open. It is not just me. A few of my angler friends got
sick from the haze too.
Maybe we should have fished with a mask on. Perhaps but I did not do so as
it is something uncomfortable that sits on one’s face and reduces one’s oxygen
intake. This is an issue when battling brutes that turn macho rugby players
into cheerleaders.
Perhaps fishing distributors can design and manufacture mask for anglers
with filters and yet easy on the oxygen intake. I am sure anglers would like
them better than the ones currently on sale.
As for The Asian Angler magazine, we are constantly changing for the better
working with your recommendations and requests. With this also means that
we will be breaking away from our initial formats. Worry not as we will do all
it takes to remain free.
Thank you and happy fishing.
Cheers,
Abu Garcia’s New Hornet
Test Information
Testing Grounds: Natural Exotic Pond
Series: Hornet Beretta
Model: AHBC632MA
Length: 6’3”
Lure Wt.: 1/6 - 3/4oz.
Line Wt.: 8-17lb
Configuration: 2 pieces
Opponents: Amazon Redtail Catfish & Asian Redtail Catfish
Abu Garcia Hornet rods have been around
for quite a while. In fact they were to some of the
lucky few who have owned them or used them
before, a favourite. One of my personal favourites
is the Hornet Stinger that feels very much
like a quality Japanese rod but at a fraction of
the price.
11
The Hornet Beretta
The new Hornet comes in the form of the Beretta, a modernised
version of previous Hornets with more current and
bolder design cues. The Hornet Beretta may not have a firing
pin, springs, a locking block, or a barrel capable of shooting a
bullet through; but it does have a trigger (at least on casting
models).
13
Modern Japanese Design
The Beretta comes with carbon wraps, darker purple rings
and windings; giving them a more rock n’ roll persona found
normally on Japanese designed rods that adopt more extreme
design cues. Such designs may not sit well with everyone but
personally, I love the looks.
Stiffer Blank
The Beretta comes with 30 Ton graphite blanks enhanced with
Nanotechnology which makes it more durable. That said, I am
uncertain where the nano coat is applied as I believe that it is
not applied on the entire length of the blank. My guess will be
the butt section (rubber end cap to brand section).
15
Nano Coating
The thing about nano coating is that they not only strengthen
an area, they stiffen it too giving it a steel like feel. I have seen
how a plastic drinking straw the kind you find at Starbucks and
Chatime (a bubble tea franchise) become as stiff as a steel
rod (but much lighter) with just a coat of Nano coat.
Quality Components
Being at this level the Beretta must come equipped with good
quality components to fit bill and it does. The Beretta comes
with Fuji guides and Fuji reel seats, both of which have proven
themselves over the years.
17
Balancing Act
When it comes to balance, the Beretta is well balanced. It is tip
heavy without a reel on. Put on a reel at it balances out pretty
well. Being well balanced gives the Beretta a lighter feel as
well especially when the rod is held horizontally (actual weight
of tested model is 138g).
Lab Test
Equipment Used
Reel: Abu Garcia Revo Elite 7
Line: Berkley Fireline Braid
Poundage: 20lb
Back at our lab the Beretta was put to the test to see if it will
meet its specs. The Beretta AHBC632MA is said to be able to
manage up to 17lb at the rear end (butt section) and thus we
put it up to our test meter. With some effort we got it to 17.4lb
and decided to not push further due to the acoustics heard.
19
Field Test
Equipment Used
Reel: Abu Garcia Revo MGX
Line: Berkley Fireline Braid
Poundage: 30lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish
Poundage: 40lb
Opponents: Amazon Redtail Catfish
Casting Abilities
When it comes to casting the Beretta does this well sending our
baits flying to good distances with relative ease. Casting accuracy is
also quite good as the Beretta’s tip does not wobble much and the
feel of line and bait is quite constant during the cast.
Fish Management
The Beretta is blessed with a strong backbone of up to about
65% of the blank. When it comes down to the battle, the Beretta
has loads of power with the ability to turn the brutes away
from structures. We landed a few very good size brutes (Amazon
Redtail catfish and Asian Redtail catfish) with relative
ease.
21
Verdict
Not as lightweight as the earlier Hornet Stingers, the Hornet
Beretta is still a lightweight rod and is built tougher, with a stiffer
blank. It is well designed and handles hard fighting fishes well.
It comes with good quality components allowing for more confident
fishing. In short, a well made good rod.

Ajiking Pop GT
Test Information
Testing Grounds: Natural Exotic Pond
Series: Pop GT
Model: PGT 702S
Length: 7’
Lure Wt.: 100-180g
Line Wt.: PE 3-5
Configuration: 2 pieces Offset (butt joint)
Opponents: Amazon Redtail Catfish
The Pop GT rod is a popping rod that has been
around for a good while and we were presented with
one during the recently held Royal Pahang Billfish International
Challenge 2015 as part of our prize. Since
we’ve got it, why not mess around with it. Why not indeed.
Out to the battlefields it went but first, the looks.
27
Unassuming Design
The Pop GT rod is designed very modestly. It comes mainly in
black, with pearl white coloured brand and spec section. Its thread
winding are black with gold linings. That is it. No carbon wraps and
flashy installs except for the aluminium winding check and gimbal
(with rubber cap). On the self, one could be assuming the unassuming...
29
Configuration
The Pop GT comes in a two piece offset configuration of which is
good. One piece rods provides for a good more constant power
curve, while two piece rods makes for convenient transportation.
To have the best of both worlds an offset configuration works well.
Blank Wise
The Pop GT comes with a graphite blank with good backbone power
that stretches to about 65 percent of the blank. It does have a tip
that flexes well enough to help cast out poppers, and in our case,
live bait fish (palm size).
31
Components
Components are very important and the Pop GT comes with quality
components. It comes fitted with Fuji guides, the kind that disseminates
heat well, and Fuji reel seat that holds the reel securely
in place especially during the fight.
Quality Grip
The grip on the Pop GT is made of high quality EVA contoured in a
such a way allowing for a good and comfortable grip for both casting
and when in battle with a fish. Needless to say, how well and
comfortable the EVA is depend very much on the size of the user’s
hands. It fits well in mine, somewhat like a glove.
33
Field Test
Equipment Used
Reel: Penn Clash 3000
Line: Berkley Fireline Braid
Poundage: 30lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish
Poundage: 40lb
We took the Pop GT to our usual playground aka battlefield in Rawang
called the Natural Exotic Pond. This pond is home to a variety of
brutes such as the Mekong catfish (Plabuk in Thai), gar fish, Amazonian
Redtail catfish, Asian Redtail catfish, etc.
We cast out our palm size live baits on a rod that is made to cast out
heavier poppers. Needless to say that the casting experience is nothing
to shout about. But, before long we were in battle with a brute. I
had the drag set up high wanting a tug-o-war experience, and if something
did break... yeeehaaaw! it is still worth it, since the snags (pillars)
were nearby.
35
Battle Management
Being locked in a tug-o-war with a brute can be both fun and tiring.
However, the Pop GT had power to leverage the battle over to me
(like taking a canon to a gun fight). No tiredness, no worries, and
before long the brute was up for a photo shoot, which tire me out
more than the fight. 4 more brutes later and it wasn’t fun anymore.
Time to put away the canon and bring out a gun.
Verdict
While Ajiking may not be as huge a brand as Shimano, Daiwa,
Penn, Abu Garcia, etc. they do have good products in their
stable of which are often given a miss by the brand conscious.
The Pop GT may not be the best rod in its class but it certainly
is a pretty good rod to mess with.

The Clash Of The Titans
Penn Clash Reel In Action
Test Information
Brand: Penn
Series: Clahs
Model: CLA6000
Testing Grounds: Rompin
Opponents: Sailfish
When it comes to saltwater big game fishing, Penn has been
a household brand. Recently Penn released the ICast 2015 New
Product Showcase winner; the Clash, a tough a powerful spinning
reel that looks tough yet stylish, feels tough like a tank yet not
heavy, and operates smoother than Sade’s smooth operator. If you
don’t know Sade, I envy your youth.
41
Full Metal Body
Full metal body, the kind of reel that saltwater anglers like as
they are structurally more rigid and are tougher. Hence the
Clash too wears such an armour giving the angler confidence
when locked in a battle with a brute out at sea.
43
Good Looker
The clash does not look like an unshaved gladiator coming out of
the pits, looking dirty, angry, and ready to kill. No, the Clash is certainly
a few classes away from it. In fact, it comes with handsome
carbon fibre inserts in a few places such as the spool and drag
knob, gold lining on black in general, and to reduce weight; cut
outs in places that makes the Clash look sexy.
Signs Of Power
The feel alone will speak volumes of the power that is stored in
the Clash. Of course feeling alone is half the battle won. Looks
is play a part too. With Over sized EVA handle knob and thick
heavy duty aluminium, the Clash’s faith is sealed. It is the modern
powerhouse in Penn’s stable, the latest slayer of the seas.
45
Smooth Operator
The Clash comes with smooth rotating Dura-Gear Technology giving
it smooth rotations with a connected feel. The 9 sealed bearings
inside helps too of course. Why sealed bearings? I was recently
asked this question by an angler? Wouldn’t the seal add weight?
Sealed Bearings
For those who want to know, yes it does. But the weight gain is
so minute that you won’t feel it. Furthermore sealed bearings
offer better protection against the elements something important
especially for saltwater reels.

Battling The Titans
Just last month (September 2015) we took the Clash off to battle
with the sailfishes of Rompin (a coastal town on the east coast
of the Malaysian Peninsular). We participated in the Royal Pahang
Billfish International Challenge. Being in such a competitive
environment, our weapons had to be tough and able to
take the constant torture.
49
Smooth Drag
The drag had to be smooth and tough enough as the sailfish is the
fastest fish in the sea. When the sailfish took the bait, the Clash
screamed and the battle ensued. With drag locked pretty much
quite close to maximum (to land the fish as fast as possible) most
reels would have given up. The Clash went on and on landing sailfish
after sailfish.
After Effects
While the anglers felt wearied down by the end of the day having
fought many a battle, the Clash remained unscathed. It still
operated smoothly and performed well. All it needed was a
wash down and its ready for more battles.

The Penn Clash is certainly a good reel to have at one’s side when
one braves the seas to do battle with some of the brutes that lie
beneath. It certainly took the onslaught of torture during our use
and is not sitting on a table somewhere asking for more.

Z Craft 0 Degree And 30
Degree Jig Heads
Jig heads, something every soft bait angler
needs. The Z Craft 0 Degree and 30 Degree jig
heads have recently hit our shores. These versatile
jig heads come with a conically designed
head of different lengths depending on the models.
The 30 Degree has a shorter head as compared
to the 0 Degree.
55
What’s With The Degree
Degree being used to differentiate the models simply tell how the
jig head sits (or rather) stands in the water. The Zero Degree allows
the soft bait to sit flat at the bottom mimicking a resting fish or worm.
Certain fishes tend to sit at the bottom of lakes or seas in a horizontal
position while resting.
The 30 Degree allows the soft bait to stand at a 30 degree angle
underwater mimicking a feeding fish or worm. Most bottom feeders
search for food this way. Should you keep bottom feeding fishes in
a aquarium you will notice this behaviour.
Quality Hooks
These Z Craft jig heads come with good quality saltwater
grade hooks that are available in X2 and X3 (2 times
stronger or 3 times stronger). Having strong hooks is certainly
a benefit especially when fishing saltwater predators.
57
X-Flex Locker
One issue normally faced by soft bait anglers is bait slippage.
This is where the soft bait slips out of position and
becomes unattractive with bad action. The X-Flex Locker
prevents this from happening allowing soft baits to be
held securely in place.
Saltwater Test
Being classified as saltwater grade jig heads we just had
to drown them in saltwater to see if they can handle corrosive
qualities well. So we drowned them in a bottle of
saltwater. That wasn’t enough. We kept them drowned
for 24 hours.
59
Sharpness Test
Before drowning them we checked to see how sharp they
were and they are indeed sharp easily catching onto the
plastic spoon. Why a plastic spoon you may ask. Well,
the norm is to test hooks running them through one’s
fingernails. We decided to use a spoon as they have a
smoother surface.
24 Hours Later
After slightly over 24 hours we drained the bottle of saltwater
and inspected both jig heads. We found no signs
of rust on them. Next we put them through the sharpness
test again with the plastic spoon. They remained sharp.
Sharpness Test 2
61
Verdict
I have yet to use them as of now (time of writing), but
have tested them in the lab. They took the saltwater test
and did not rust. They still remained sharp. They are
good jig heads. Should you be in the market for jig heads
here’s another one to consider.

Minnows Inc King Frog
The Minnows Inc King Frog lure is a hard plastic lure or solid lure
that comes with a CNC body shape design. They come with a rubber
skirt that is easily changeable, two soft rubber peddle type legs,
and a free swimming Owner super strong double hook.
65
Strong Construction
The King Frog is built using high density moulded one
piece PU body that is tough and it has a stainless steel
wire that runs through the body of the frog called the Full
Contact System (FCS). The body is painted with good
quality paint resembling natural colours of various frogs.
Within The Body
Inside the body are glass rattle inserts that creates noise
when the frog is twitched or retrieved in the water, attracting
fishes nearby to investigate and attack. It also comes
with a weight system that makes it sit the right way up
simulating a real frog on water.

Minnows Inc Beito Original
Minnows Inc Beito Original ultra fast minnow lures is an extremely
versatile lure that can be in many ways. The Beito Original
features a special weight transfer system and an aerodynamic
design that allows for very good casting distances.
Weight Transfer System
The weight transfer system also gives the Beito Original a
live like swim action during the retrieve and superb stability
attracting nearby predators to attack. Using a system called
the “Full Connect System” (FCS) the Beito Original uses
a wire through lure system. This means that should the a
strong toothy predator take and break the lure, chances are
you will still land it.
69
The Beito Original is ideal for blue
water casting or slow trolling targeting
pelagic fishes such as
Mackerel, Trevally, Tuna, Queenfish,
etc.

Team Penn Conflict
Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge
2015 Experience
Personally I have never liked taking part in fishing competitions.
Fishing has been a way to relax and forget about work, and not
something to be stressed with. Well, since fishing has for a long time
become work and stress has been a part of work, this year I decided
to compete in one. I signed up for the Royal Pahang Billfish International
Challenge.
71
The Challenge
The Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge is an a
fishing competition held in Rompin (east coast of the Malaysian
peninsular) targeting any fish with a bill. In this waters
they are the marlins and the sailfishes. Simply put, the team
with the highest score wins. A sailfish earns the team 600
points and a marlin bring in 1000 points.
Team Penn Conflict
With each team made up of 3 anglers and the boat captain,
my team is made up of Kay, Daniel, and me (Phil), not forgetting
Ah Pau our boat captain. We are Team Penn Conflict
fishing under the Penn brand with Penn being our main
sponsor and Buff our sponsor of gloves and multifunctional
head wear. None of us have competed in fishing competitions
let alone this event. Daniel has never even caught a
sailfish before. Still we wanted to win.
73
Scouting The Sea
A day before the event we headed out to sea in search of billfishes
and to plan our strategy. Our superb captain worked
hard in hunting down the billfishes taking a mental note of
tomorrow’s game plan and giving us pointers on what to expect.
We wandered about the seas all the way to Pulau Berhala
(Berhala Island) and back, spending the entire day just
scouting. This is the first time in my life of fishing that no
lines were in the water despite seeing sailfish all over.
Preparing The Assault
The night was spent tying lines and hooks, ensuring that our
fishing arsenals are ready for the next day’s assault, and
ironing out the finer details of our planed strategy. Our host
of weapons are made up of Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger
Lite Jigging and Penn Snapper rods, accompanied by Penn
Spinfisher, Battle II, Conflict, and Clash reels; for the billfish.
Abu Garcia Ocean Project and Salty Stage KRX rods for
baitfish.
75
Day 1: Ready For War
We had our breakfast at about 6.30am and like loaded our
fishing tackle onto our boat. We then headed to the Lanjut
Jetty for the officiating of the event by the VIPs, and to pickup
our marshal. For this event we get a different marshal
every day of which is good.
Shooting For The Baits
At 9am we were like a bunch of racing boats waiting in line
to shoot off. Depending on the number given to each team,
our boats were to leave in sequence of these numbers. We
waited for our turn. When it came, our captain gunned the
engines and we shooting off to our first stop, where baits lie
in wait for our little Apollo rigs. We turned from mere humans
into one big fishing machine.
77
Good Fishing
After catching enough baits we shot straight to the areas that
were marked the day before and hunted down the groups of
sailfishes targeted. We drifted out our live baits and waited
for the sails (or marlin) to strike. It wasn’t long when we were
on to our first sail.
79
Machine At Work
Like a machine all of us on board were moving rods, managing
lines, etc. to ensure that the sailfish is landed fast, safely, gets is
photo taken, and released alive. Out tackle played an important
part too as the sailfish is known to be the fastest fish in the sea;
reels must be smooth and able to take the heat, rods have to be
powerful enough to manage the fish, and lines must be able to
withstand the torture.
Time Is Of The Essence
Our tackle performed very
well especially the Penn
Spinfisher V Live Liner reel
and shortly later the sailfish
was at the side of the
boat. The marshal on our
boat didn’t waste any time
at all. Understanding that
time is of the essence, he
whipped out his camera
and fired a few shots.
81
Very Good First Day
The sea was rough and with winds blowing up waves, we
were bruising our knees trying to maintain our stance while
fighting fish after fish. We did lose a few fishes of which is
a common thing but all in all we did have a pretty good first
day landing a total of 11 sailfishes.
83
Day 2 Assault
The fishing time on day two is shorter as all participants had
to be report back by 3pm or face disqualification. The marshals
from PeMM (Malaysian Fishing Association) headed
by James Tye are strict in upholding the rules. Having no
time to waste, we picked up our marshal and shot out to our
fishing spots starting with the live baits spots.
85
Slower Fishing Day
The morning started out great. We caught most of the sailfish
(for the day) in the morning while the winds were blowing
and the waves swaying our boat from left to right. Just
past noon the winds died down and the sea became mirror
calm. It felt like we were fishing on a mysterious lake (we
were surrounded by thick haze).
The Last Call
With the winds and waves gone, the sailfishes have decided
to go into hiding. Those that were around seemed to have
lost of mood to eat. We continued hunting about the seas
stopping to try our luck at different spots until it was time to
go. As we were to reel in our lines a sail decided to strike.
The battle ensued and not long later the fish was landed
photographed and released.
87
The Worrying “Wrap Up”
We landed 7 sails and that got us quite worried. But there
was nothing much we could do but cross our fingers and
hope for the best. The boat ride back to the jetty was a fast
and silent one. We didn’t know where we stood.
The Close
That night we waited patiently at the Lanjut Golden Beach
And Golf Resort for dinner and the prize giving ceremony.
The three of us chose a table somewhat a distance from
the stage and waited for the other teams also sponsored by
Penn to arrive. It was then that James, the head marshal
came over and invited us to sit at the winners table.
89
We’ve Won Something
There were 7 ranking positions (7 winning teams). We sat at
the winners table and waited for the prize giving ceremony.
We had our dinner, watched a few dancers, watch some
singing, and at last the announcement announcing the winners
of the event came.
Racing Heart Beats
7th place, Team Lemax Pro Team! A sigh of relieve, followed
by I hope it is not us. 6th place Team Gung Ho! from New
Zealand! Another sigh of relief. 5th place Team Jin Zun Fishing
Club from China! This is where we thought we stood, at
number 4. 4th place, Team Stars Of Jade!
91
Hit In A Good Way
It hit us in a very good way. We are top three. 2nd runner up,
Team Penn Conflict! We came in 3rd. We gave each other a
hug and went on stage to collect our trophy and prizes. Team
Gawas came in 2nd, and the champions, Team Xzoga.
About The Event
The Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge is an annual
event that is jointly organized by the state government,
Tioman Development Authority Culture Malaysia, together
with the Malaysian Angling Association (PeMM).
This year’s sponsors are Pure Fishing Malaysia, TCE Tackle,
Sang Lin Tackle, Mustad, The Season Tackle, And Lanjut
Resort Hotel.
93
Hats Off
Hats off to the very hard working team, PeMM, and James
the head marshal. A job done well indeed. We wish a very
hearty congratulations to all winners of the event. Thank you
to all who sponsored the event. Also a big thank you to our
sponsors, Penn and Buff (Corezone Malaysia).
Finale
The event was indeed a stressful one as we worked our
butts off to win. We were so focused on winning that we
forgot to eat on the boat. Our boat captain had to remind us
to eat. Our fishing tackle did well. We did have equipment
failure thus the importance to have lots of backup tackle on
the boat.
95
Good Tackle
That said, the best performing reel we had during this event
was the Penn Spinfisher Live Liner. They are smooth and
the Live Liner function is superb for this sort of fishing. Another
reel that did very well is the Penn Clash. Its smooth
and tough. Just that it does not have the Live Liner function.
These are fantastic reels for such torturous fishing situations.
Lessons Learnt
There are a few things that I have learnt. Amongst the more
important once are:
1. Ensure all tackle are in very good condition. If unsure,
leave them behind and buy new ones.
2. Bring more tackle than you think you need. Includes rods,
reels, lines, lures, rigs, etc.
3. Tackle use for leisure fishing and competition fishing are
not the same. You cannot afford some slack.
4. Over practise and be overly prepared.

Fishing With Spoons Part 9
Trailers
When it comes to fishing, there seldom is a perfect situation.
Sometimes all your experiences learnt from the same fishing hole
over the years seems to be of no use. Some say that the fishes
have learnt (which is true). Some say the fishes have decided to
rebel and take the day off. In situations like this, sometimes all it
take is a little change. Why not add trailers into the mix?
105
What Are Trailers?
I don’t mean the section with many wheel attached to a lorry’s
behind. In this terms trailers are things like soft plastics that are
attached to the spoons. Like a lorry being attached to a trailer, the
spoon plays the role of the lorry and the soft bait take the role of
the trailer. Easy.
Commonly Used Trailers
There are a number of things that can be used as trailers. They
all have the same objective and that is to add to the visual effects
of spoons, spinners, or jigs used and thus triggering a
bite. These here are a few common ones.
107
Cut Strips
Cut strips are one of my favourite trailers. They are any strips
of soft baits (what I use) that come in a flat piece and can be
cut to strips. The ones that I used are scented by Berkley.
There are anglers who use strips of meat too as trailers. For
saltwater fishing one can use fish strips, squid, etc.
*Pictures courtesy of Pure Fishing Japan.
Worms
Soft plastic worms are amongst some of the most commonly used
trailers. They give a wriggly action at the back of the spoon.
109
Soft Plastic Fish
Another commonly used trailer are soft plastic fishes such as minnows
with t tails or paddle tails. The wriggly swimming tail action is
enticing to a hungry fish. I have used them with good success.
Grubs
Soft plastic Grubs make good trailers too. Like the soft plastic fish
trailers, the tail of the grub dances an exotic dance and is enticing to
fishes. I have used them with good success too.
111
Tubes
Tubes are commonly used trailers. These rubber baits look like squid,
having a few tentacles (appendages) that wriggle about giving a visual
display that is enticing. Another benefit of tubes is that they are
usually hollow and can be used to hold scent (scent capsule).
Skirts
Rubber skirts are usually used on spinners and they have for a
long time proved their effectiveness. Rubber Skirts can be added to
spoons too either directly or with the trailer used adding to the visual
effect of your spoons.
113
Why Do They Work?
Spoons are successful lures for a few reason. They give out shine,
create turbulence, create vibrations, create bubble trails, etc. All
these qualities attract fishes. But there are times when they don’t
work for whatever reason.
Soft plastics on the other hand are successful because they look
like the real thing, are soft when bitten, and they can be scented
effectively. However, they do not give much shine (comparing to
spoons) of which is a fish attracting factor, and weighing the balance
between weight, swim action, drop rate, and casting distances can
be difficult sometimes.
Visual Effects
By putting them both together we get the visual effects of both spoon
and soft baits in action providing for a stronger effect with the added
benefits of scent, a more controlled fall, an effective balance of casting
distance, drop rate, and swim action.
115
To Conclude
Adding trailers to spoon is nothing new. It has been used for many
years in many countries for a variety of fishes. There are even spoons
manufactured with trailers attached. Do give them a try when all else
fails. Better to have more options during one’s adventure, right?

Fish Don’t Feel Pain, Says
Scientists
I have been in a few friendly debates on why I chose a sport such
as fishing. I have been accused of hurting fishes just for sport and
a photograph of which my normal reply is fish don’t feel pain (I’ve
read somewhere years ago). I am then asked how I know and if I
have interviewed a fish. This goes on and on.
117
Scientifically Proven
Jim Rose, professor of zoology and physiology at the University
of Wisconsin, who led the project, did an experiment by inserting
needles into the jaws of rainbow trout and injecting them with large
doses of acid or bee venom, of which will cause severe pain to
humans, did not affect the trout much. They resumed their normal
activities within minutes. The same is seen after being caught and
released back into the water.
Why Fish Can’t Feel
Pain
Unlike humans, it is said that fish do not have a brain system
or enough sensory receptors in the nerve cells to experience
suffering or pain. They will struggle to get free of which is a reaction
to being caught, but without the feeling of pain or suffer.
119
Fish Happy
Well, instead of telling these friends who shoot down our sport for
hurting fishes to stop eating fishes, or telling them (if they are vegetarians)
to stop robbing the poor animals of food by eating their
food; we can now tell them that it has been scientifically proven
that fishes do not feel pain. Not sure about whales, dolphins, and
sharks though.

Get Your Kids Fishing
An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we
experience nature, we improve
our analytical skills, we absorb
vitamins from the sun, we expend
our minds, we learn about the
environment, etc.
There are so many benefits to
fishing and we should reduce our
kids addiction to video games,
computer games, playing with
mobile devices, etc. We should get
them to interact more with our
environment and teach them a
thing or two about life and living
With this in mind we hope to
encourage you to take your kid(s)
Soft Plastic Fun
Greetings everyone!
Recently I was lucky to be able to fish with the new Abu Garcia
Tournament K. It is a beautiful rod built for anglers chasing their
dream fish in any area be it open water or even heavy cover. This
rod is perfect for executing long casts, fishing big baits and I even
could fish micro lures and soft plastics with it.
129
By Amirul Irfan
FI also had the chance to fish the Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky
Shad. Being a fan of swimbaits, the Slinky Shad made me drool at first
sight. The Slinky Shad is a durable bait and it floats. So far I have had
no problems with the Slinky Shad getting torn up despite vicious hits
from large snakeheads.
I fish the Slinky Shad weightless with a Mustad 3/0 EWG Hook.
The natural profile and swimming action is great for triggering bites
during tough fishing sessions. Despite being designed for saltwater
applications, the scent and action of the Slinky Shad also works
for freshwater fish.
The head of the Slinky Shad is hollow which makes it easy to rig and
it will also slide up the line and swivel when a fish thrashes around. I
was able to catch many fish on just one Slinky Shad. A large snakehead
gulped the Slinky Shad when I just left it to float around a grassy
area, but the fish managed to escape halfway through the fight.
131
Even small snakeheads will come out of weeds to have a bite on
the Slinky Shad. I saw this snakehead (and countless others) trail
behind the Slinky Shad to have a bite. I had no problem to set the
hook with the Surecatch D-Legend.
2 decent Striped Snakeheads on the Slinky Shad and Zman MinnowZ.
The water level in the pond went up around 1 foot above weeds because
of rains the night before. Watching big snakeheads swimming
in 1 foot of water to have breakfast is an amazing sight. Matching the
hatch was the key to score a few fish at the time.
133
Another morning swimbait fish. I caught this feisty snakehead on
an Owner swimbait I received from Mr.Ginson 2 months ago. The
snakehead posed for a photoshoot on some hydrilla alongside the
Surecatch D-Legend.
Another snakehead scored on the Owner swimbait. The barbless hook
made it easy to unhook and release the fish. The Abu Garcia Tournament
K made hook setting no problem. I just gave a little force and
the fish was hooked solid. I like to fish soft plastic swimbaits on the
surface like buzzbaits because their tails will produce a buzzing sound
with bubbles.
135
Another juvenile on the Owner swimbait just 10 minutes after releasing
the previous snakehead. This snakehead was also hooked
solidly at the same spot. Could this snakehead be twins with the
previous snakehead?
Soft plastics are effective and fun. Do give them a try.
I hope everyone will stay safe especially during the haze phenomena
now.
Tight lines & happy fishing.

UV ANGLER BUFF
UV Buff® is the Original Buff® headwear made to be used during
the hottest months. Thanks to its special Coolmax® Extreme fabric,
UV Buff® evaporates perspiration quickly allowing moisture to pass
through while offering 95% protection from UV rays. It is the perfect
garment for practicing any outdoor activity under the sun.
Features
Uses Coolmax material.
– A special four-channel fibre forms a transport system that pulls
moisture away from the skin to the outer layer of the fabric. It then
dries that moisture faster than any other fabric and thermoregulate
the body.
Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is present in sunlight. Sunburn is a sign
that your skin has received too much UV. Overexposure to UV over
many years can cause more serious health problems such as skin
cancer or cataracts. Garments that are sensibly designed for sun
protection like this one reduce your UV exposure.
How To Bite Your Fishing
Rod For Pictures
Photographing your catch is something a lot of anglers participate
in. Many an angler like to show off what equipment was used
to catch the fish with. There are many ways to showcase these
equipment in photographs that include both fish and angler as well.
145
Rod In Mouth Style
One of the commonly used style is the rod in mouth style where the
angler bites the rod that is placed in his or her mouth while holding
the fish in both hands and posing for the camera. Here the angler
will have to balance both the fish and the rod in mouth with the reel
weighing down towards one side.
Blank Or Grip?
If this is your chosen style of picture posing, should you bite the
EVA or cork handle since it is softer, tastier, and will not damage as
easily, or would you rather bite a solid part of the blank be it fibreglass
or carbon graphite?
147
Bacteria Nation
My personal recommendation will be to bite the blank staying away
from the grip whatever the material. The reason is that EVA, cork,
etc. grips soak up all sorts of things from fish slime to bacteria,
sweat for scary places to many other contaminants, thus giving
them taste. The blank however does not soak up anything although
it certainly contains dirt and bacteria but the levels are lower.
