From the time of Edward the I., A. d. 1273, York was governed by a mayor and three bailiffs. In the reign of Richard II., a. d. 1397, two sheriffs were appointed, and till the year 1 836 York had two sheriffs annually. In that year the municipal act came into operation, by which one sheriff was dispensed with. The sheriff is now chosen annually by the city council ; but is not, ex-officio, a mem ber of that body. ffliro of York erfjaritB ©rusts. Before the passing of the act 5 and 6 William IV., cap. 76, regulating municipal corporatians, several charities were in the hands of the Lord Mayor and aldermen. By the 71st section of that act, however, it is provided, " that whereas divers bodies corporate, now stand seised or possessed of sundry hereditaments and personal estate in trust, in whole or in part, for certain charitable trusts, it is expedient that the administration thereof be kept distinct from that of the public stock and borough fund." To carry out this object, the lord chancellor is impowered to appoint a certain number of trustees, on the nomina tion of the city council. Several of the charities are of great antiquity, as will be seen from the annexed correct statement of those now at the disposal of the York city charity trustees :—
